00:00:35 Hello everyone, hands up who's excited?
00:00:38 I tell you what I am.
00:00:39 We've got kayak cross action coming your way.
00:00:42 It's been an incredible morning but the best is yet to come.
00:00:46 This is the 2020 through 2023 International Canoe Federation
00:00:51 Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross World Championships
00:00:53 coming to you from Lee Valley in London.
00:00:56 My name is Ross Solley.
00:00:57 It is great to be here with you, a man who is feeling equally excited.
00:01:00 He's still got his hand in the air.
00:01:02 That's how excited he is, Brodie Crawford.
00:01:05 Ross, what a morning we've had, far out.
00:01:08 We've had a great morning.
00:01:09 We've seen it all.
00:01:10 We have seen it all.
00:01:11 We've learned new things.
00:01:12 If you haven't caught up with the action, it's all there on our streaming platforms.
00:01:16 You can go back and relive some of the exciting moments.
00:01:19 But don't do it just yet because you might miss some excitement coming your way.
00:01:23 We're up to the quarterfinal stages of the Kayak Cross World Championships.
00:01:28 Some of the biggest names in our sport are out already.
00:01:31 Some of them didn't even make it past the time trials,
00:01:34 like my co-commentator, Brodie Crawford.
00:01:36 That's why he's sitting here alongside me.
00:01:39 He's got some good company though today.
00:01:41 Stefan Henckx, former world champion.
00:01:42 Witt Prindis.
00:01:43 Anatoly Delazseuse, former world champion, silver medalist.
00:01:48 Jessica Fox, a two-time world champion.
00:01:51 Veronika Vojtova, a one-time world champion.
00:01:53 They're all out.
00:01:54 Yeah, it's been a very tough morning out on the river.
00:01:57 We've seen, yeah, some big heads taken early
00:02:01 and a lot of rules breaking in the early session.
00:02:05 A lot of rule breaking.
00:02:07 And now we've done some homework.
00:02:10 Look at that updated medal table there sitting up the top there,
00:02:13 the home nation, Great Britain.
00:02:15 Look at Australia, Brodie Crawford.
00:02:17 Wow, how good.
00:02:18 He's sitting there in second at the moment.
00:02:22 Let's see how it plays out though.
00:02:24 I'm not sure if you're going to add to that medal tally today.
00:02:26 You've got your fingers crossed, I know.
00:02:27 But here is Jessica Fox, the reigning world champion.
00:02:31 As I mentioned, this was -- oh, look at that.
00:02:34 That's what it's all about, folks.
00:02:36 That is an Anissa Tiller canoe to the ribcage.
00:02:40 And that's her saying far out, I've won, I'm a world champion.
00:02:45 And that was last year.
00:02:46 This year -- there it is again.
00:02:49 Look at that.
00:02:50 Oh, my goodness.
00:02:51 I think that would be a row, what they call a row,
00:02:55 which means you're in a very, very bad place
00:02:59 and you're going to be disciplined later on.
00:03:01 And we know further part taken in the racing today.
00:03:04 But that was Jessica Fox last year.
00:03:06 She didn't make it through today, didn't make it past the time trial.
00:03:10 Yeah, pretty wild.
00:03:12 I was out in the water, so I didn't see her run.
00:03:14 But, yeah, obviously coming unstuck in a couple of places.
00:03:18 And, yeah, it's not easy, Ross.
00:03:20 Just tell people what you have to do for the time trial, Brodie.
00:03:23 Yeah, so you have to do the course that we see today.
00:03:26 However, you just pick a couple of the ups, one on the left and one on the right.
00:03:30 And you've just got to get down there as quick as you can.
00:03:33 It's just based off the fastest time.
00:03:34 Top 20 go through plus an extra 16 nations that aren't showing.
00:03:39 And it's just you're racing the stopwatch, really, aren't you?
00:03:42 That's what it's like.
00:03:44 Oh, it's been exciting, folks.
00:03:46 Strap yourselves in because we've got some red hot action.
00:03:48 Look at that.
00:03:49 This is the steely eye of determination from Klaudia Zolinska from Poland.
00:03:55 She's got a pretty stacked quarterfinal, though,
00:03:57 because next to her is Aliska Mintelova from Slovakia.
00:04:02 Look at that.
00:04:03 The facial expressions.
00:04:04 That is, like, serious.
00:04:06 This is a no, don't get in my way, no nonsense approach.
00:04:10 The smiling assassin, Stephanie Horn.
00:04:13 Yeah, she gives us a wink back there.
00:04:15 We don't accept it.
00:04:16 Wink denied because we know what you're about to do, Stephanie Horn.
00:04:20 She's so good.
00:04:21 She's had such a great year.
00:04:22 Yeah, she's so cool in the start line, isn't she?
00:04:24 Isn't she?
00:04:25 And Cammy Prigent looking right through us.
00:04:30 It certainly seems like they've got to get themselves in a certain mindset for this, isn't it?
00:04:34 It's different to slalom.
00:04:35 It's a bit of a war out there.
00:04:36 It really is a war.
00:04:37 Now, this morning we saw on the right-hand side of the screen,
00:04:40 that is definitely the best place to be starting from.
00:04:43 So that is Cammy Prigent from France in the red bib.
00:04:46 Let's see if she gets off.
00:04:47 And look at that.
00:04:48 Straight away, Stephanie Horn tries to take her out.
00:04:50 So Prigent in the red vest is away quick.
00:04:53 So is Stephanie Horn right next to her in the green.
00:04:57 And they come down here.
00:04:58 They've got to decide which side of the course they're going to go to now.
00:05:01 They've got two choices.
00:05:03 It's neck and neck, left and right.
00:05:04 And it's Prigent and Horn.
00:05:06 Look at that sneaky move from the Italian, Stephanie Horn.
00:05:09 She's moved into the front.
00:05:11 Yes.
00:05:12 Mintelova on the other side of the course has got the best of the start over there.
00:05:15 Still a very close race here, Ross.
00:05:17 Wow, look at that.
00:05:18 I think that's the closest we've seen them all through this area of the course.
00:05:21 Let's see how they go to this three-fourths.
00:05:23 It's a tight little move.
00:05:24 Clare de Zwolinski buffeted out the back.
00:05:27 But it's Stephanie Horn in front.
00:05:28 Oh, she's gone low.
00:05:29 I think she's going to be okay, though.
00:05:30 Yep, she's okay.
00:05:31 Mintelova second.
00:05:32 Prigent third.
00:05:33 Oh, big move there from Zwolinski.
00:05:36 Very good from Zwolinski.
00:05:37 They all went low apart from Zwolinski nailing the move and overtaking.
00:05:41 So, Stephanie Horn in front.
00:05:43 This is the compulsory role that all the athletes have to do.
00:05:45 Mintelova second.
00:05:47 It's Zwolinski third.
00:05:49 And now here -- oh!
00:05:51 Just -- I'll tell you what, they've left Mintelova to her own devices.
00:05:55 But look at her.
00:05:56 What's she doing over there?
00:05:57 What is she -- oh, no.
00:05:58 What is she doing?
00:06:00 Oh, let's go.
00:06:01 Mintelova.
00:06:02 She had it all to herself.
00:06:05 And she just made an absolute mess of it.
00:06:08 And that has meant Stephanie Horn has gone through first.
00:06:11 Oh, and I think, unfortunately, Zwolinski, you're out.
00:06:14 You went the wrong side of the pole.
00:06:16 The pole went the wrong side of the pole.
00:06:20 We've seen that a couple of times this afternoon, haven't we,
00:06:23 where someone's been out in front, they just need to do the upstream uninterrupted,
00:06:28 and they can't make it happen.
00:06:30 And this could not make it happen.
00:06:32 Yeah, Mintelova.
00:06:33 She was all by herself on one side of the course.
00:06:37 She got served up the hors d'oeuvres, the entree and the main meal all at once,
00:06:41 and she couldn't even get past the finger food at the start.
00:06:45 And she got stuck there.
00:06:47 Do not pass go, do not collect 200.
00:06:49 Yeah.
00:06:50 It's a frustrating position when you're just stuck in behind that gate
00:06:54 and you can't get it to move.
00:06:55 It's torture.
00:06:57 The gate cannot be your friend sometimes.
00:06:59 But look at Stephanie Horn getting the business done.
00:07:05 Cammy Prigent has moved, has taken second.
00:07:08 Claudia Zwolinski went on the wrong side of the gate at the finish,
00:07:11 so she has a fault.
00:07:13 Look at that clever move there from Stephanie Horn.
00:07:15 Just moved under Prigent.
00:07:19 And then look here, they were really going for it.
00:07:22 Yeah, so they all slide a little low.
00:07:24 Watch up the back as Zwolinski just nails the moving and overtakes Bridgette.
00:07:28 Prigent.
00:07:29 Prigent's right.
00:07:30 Yeah, look at this.
00:07:31 So at this stage, Mintalova was looking good.
00:07:34 And then the whole race opened up for her, the Slovakian,
00:07:39 because everybody else went to the other side of the course.
00:07:42 So Mintalova, she would not have believed how it was unfolding.
00:07:49 And there on the wrong side of the pole, unfortunately for the pole.
00:07:53 We didn't see Mintalova getting stuck on the gate back there on the last upstream,
00:07:59 but that's where it all fell apart for her.
00:08:01 She'll be kicking herself about that one, there's no doubt.
00:08:05 Yeah, not the result she would have wanted.
00:08:07 So there you go, confirmation on your screen now.
00:08:09 Stephanie Horn is through.
00:08:10 Cammy Prigent is through.
00:08:11 Stephanie Horn, by the way, is the overall World Cup's leader this year,
00:08:15 so she's had a great year, Brodie.
00:08:17 She's on fire.
00:08:18 First year racing, kayak cross.
00:08:21 She's just thinking, "What's all the fuss?"
00:08:24 What is all the fuss? This is so easy.
00:08:26 She's a natural.
00:08:28 Victoria Wolfhardt we saw from Austria.
00:08:30 There is Elena Marx from Switzerland, the sister of Dimitri Marx.
00:08:34 And what a powerful combination there.
00:08:35 What a powerful team the Swiss are when it comes to kayak cross.
00:08:39 Angele Hugg from France.
00:08:43 And Eva Terschel from Slovenia.
00:08:48 She really is determined to make a move.
00:08:50 She had a disappointing kayak event.
00:08:53 She didn't make it past qualifying, the former world champion.
00:08:56 Yeah, she'll be up for redemption today, there's no doubt.
00:08:58 Yeah.
00:09:00 So Wolfhardt, Marx, Hugg and Terschel.
00:09:03 Watch the Swiss paddler.
00:09:04 They've really come up with their own style and it's so effective.
00:09:10 Let's see if it works for Elena Marx.
00:09:15 Good start, and Terschel and Angele in front there, left and right.
00:09:19 Hugg and Terschel get the best of the start.
00:09:21 Looks like they're going down to opposite sides of the course,
00:09:23 which is probably a good move.
00:09:26 So no problem here for Terschel.
00:09:28 She's all by herself and Hugg is also around easily.
00:09:31 Cleanest start I think we've had today.
00:09:34 Yeah.
00:09:36 And ooh, there's going to be a little bit of argy-bargy now going on for the lead.
00:09:39 They need to just -- they don't need to take each other out.
00:09:44 Don't think too silly, girls.
00:09:45 You're sitting in perfect spot right now.
00:09:48 Terschel is in front.
00:09:49 Hugg is second.
00:09:52 Tricky little move, this one.
00:09:54 Ooh, and they're coming unstuck at the back there.
00:09:56 Both of them spinning 360 degrees.
00:09:59 That definitely was not intended.
00:10:01 Nope.
00:10:02 So Eva Terschel still holds the lead.
00:10:04 Hugg is second.
00:10:05 I don't think anyone else can challenge these two.
00:10:07 They've got the race sewn up.
00:10:09 This has been a very easy quarterfinal.
00:10:14 Terschel, Hugg, and the race for third.
00:10:19 But it's pretty straightforward racing.
00:10:22 You've just got to make sure they get between the gates here.
00:10:25 Yeah, which isn't as easy as it may look.
00:10:27 It's been proving a little bit tricky for some of the athletes.
00:10:30 That's the biggest whitewater of the course down there, so you've got to be on it.
00:10:36 Well done, Eva Terschel.
00:10:37 She is safely through to the next round, as is Angele Hugg from France.
00:10:43 I think Vicky Woolfart may be finished third, but it does not matter.
00:10:46 Only the top two go through.
00:10:50 And Terschel, who will have her sights, I'm sure, Brodie,
00:10:53 as many athletes who didn't qualify this weekend,
00:10:57 she'll have her sights on going to Prague next year for the Olympic qualifying event
00:11:02 where three men and three women will earn quotas.
00:11:06 Yeah, that's going to be an exciting event.
00:11:08 Everyone's going to be absolutely going for it.
00:11:10 I'm sure probably a lot more training in kayak cross is going to happen between now and then
00:11:15 than there probably normally is in everyone's camps.
00:11:18 So you can see there, Elena Marks getting a--oh, twice, dear, oh dear, right on the snozz.
00:11:29 Yeah, I've had that in the boat.
00:11:31 It's quite painful, actually.
00:11:32 Is it? It looks heavy.
00:11:34 Very rigid and quite heavy, yeah.
00:11:36 And I think, unfortunately for Elena, she might have got it twice,
00:11:39 so maybe both nostrils cocked a whack from the gate.
00:11:44 Too easy here at the bottom.
00:11:49 Yep.
00:11:50 Terschel and Angel just bruising.
00:11:52 No need to panic. Everything was good.
00:11:55 They'll have fresh arms for the next heat.
00:11:58 So Elena Marks got a fault, by the way, fault six,
00:12:02 so she might not have gone through the finish gate properly.
00:12:07 That's the last gate, isn't it? There you go.
00:12:09 Yeah, claims another one.
00:12:10 Yep.
00:12:11 So quarterfinal two is done and dusted.
00:12:15 Now we move on to the third quarterfinal and on the starting block.
00:12:20 Florence Mayhew from Canada.
00:12:25 I saw a couple of the Canadians at lunchtime.
00:12:29 They were looking very excited to have some quarterfinal action coming their way.
00:12:33 Emma Bouton from France.
00:12:37 France very strong in this event, as you've seen.
00:12:40 And look at this, we've got the two Brits next to each other.
00:12:43 Nikita Terschel.
00:12:45 Crowd getting behind Nikita, three-time under-23 world champion.
00:12:51 She's really good at this event, kayak cross, isn't she?
00:12:53 Yes.
00:12:54 As is Kimberly Woods.
00:12:56 She is the reigning world championship silver medalist.
00:13:00 They're in the prime spot to work together here, Ross.
00:13:02 Will they work together?
00:13:04 I think they will try, I'm hoping.
00:13:07 I think the final, you go for it.
00:13:10 But until you get to the final, work as a team.
00:13:13 There's two spots available.
00:13:15 So watch on the right of your screen, the two Brits, Terschel and Woods.
00:13:20 Look at them going out.
00:13:21 Oh, I don't know they are working together.
00:13:23 Woods is out first.
00:13:25 Terschel is chasing her down.
00:13:26 I think they're going to go to the same side of the course.
00:13:28 Okay.
00:13:29 Will they look after each other?
00:13:32 Woods goes around first.
00:13:33 Oh, Terschel.
00:13:35 I heed my words, Ross.
00:13:36 It's on.
00:13:37 It is on.
00:13:38 They're still in front and the boat of Vuitton is in third.
00:13:44 Oh, Terschel hits the gate.
00:13:47 They're doing to each other.
00:13:48 Boy, oh boy.
00:13:49 Kimberly Woods has taken out a teammate.
00:13:51 Kim, unbelievable.
00:13:54 So Emma Vuitton now moves into the front.
00:13:56 The two Brits have put in each other's way.
00:14:00 Kimberly Woods has survived.
00:14:01 Poor old Nikita Terschel.
00:14:03 Give Kimberly a knock on the floor.
00:14:05 She'll leave any customer that comes her way.
00:14:07 Terschel not looking happy.
00:14:10 She's going to line up her British teammate here, I reckon, from afar.
00:14:14 She's coming in off a long run.
00:14:16 But at the front of the course, it's Vuitton from France.
00:14:20 Oh, good move there from--
00:14:21 Whoa!
00:14:22 Kimberly Woods has stuffed it up.
00:14:23 Oh, what a--
00:14:25 Kimberly Woods has got to go back.
00:14:26 This is going to be a tight.
00:14:27 She's recovered.
00:14:29 Jeez, Terschel had a chance of redemption there, but--
00:14:31 She could have taken Woods out.
00:14:33 She could have taken Kimberly Woods out
00:14:36 if only she knew that Woods had made a mess.
00:14:38 But she was able to recover.
00:14:41 And she's through.
00:14:43 Now, let's see.
00:14:45 Is there a thumbs up from Terschel to Woods, or is it no speaking?
00:14:48 Not a finish, it's like--
00:14:51 That didn't look close, Ross.
00:14:53 Oh, no, finish.
00:14:54 Terschel really came hard at the end there.
00:14:56 That was me.
00:14:58 Okay, wow.
00:14:59 Okay, let's have a look.
00:15:01 Let's go to the camera.
00:15:03 No doubt about our winner, though.
00:15:05 Yeah.
00:15:07 Very well raced, I think.
00:15:09 Well, making the most of the two Brits fighting against each other.
00:15:12 Exactly.
00:15:13 Just stayed out of the carnage and floated on through.
00:15:15 I don't know what the coach will be saying, anyway, to the two Brits.
00:15:20 We've got a cue on Woods.
00:15:23 She wins the photo finish there.
00:15:26 So, look at this.
00:15:27 They both got away nicely, but then they went to the same side of the course.
00:15:30 And if you were wondering whether they were working together, have a look at that.
00:15:34 Nikita Terschel just trying to buffet Kimberley Woods' boat out of the way.
00:15:38 "Thanks, but no thanks," says Kimberley.
00:15:41 "Get your boat out of my armpit."
00:15:43 And then, this is the move.
00:15:47 Oh, look at that.
00:15:48 "Have my boat in your throat."
00:15:52 Terschel's face says it all.
00:15:54 What is going on?
00:15:55 "Thank you, Kimberley," she says.
00:15:57 "Thanks, mate."
00:15:59 And then Kimberley here, trying to get around this gate.
00:16:01 I thought she nailed it.
00:16:04 Look at that.
00:16:05 And then it just refused to do what it was meant to do.
00:16:08 And now the panic station's set in.
00:16:10 But she was able to.
00:16:12 She's such a good paddler.
00:16:13 She was able to turn around.
00:16:15 She held it together.
00:16:16 Look at that there.
00:16:17 She's had to re-cut.
00:16:18 Oh, dear.
00:16:20 Look how far back Terschel is.
00:16:21 I'd like to see this finish.
00:16:23 She did well to get that ground back.
00:16:25 And so Woods finally gets away.
00:16:28 So Terschel tries to chase her down over the final little bit.
00:16:32 Here it is here in the background.
00:16:36 She's got the boat speed there on the right of your screens.
00:16:40 I think Woods thought she had it in the can.
00:16:42 And then she looked over her left shoulder and she saw
00:16:44 Nikita Terschel's boat coming again.
00:16:48 So, confirmation there.
00:16:50 Emma Vuitton and Kimberly Woods through to the next round.
00:16:53 Jessica Fox, the reigning world champion.
00:16:58 She is watching on as her sister, her youngest sister,
00:17:01 Nomi Fox, takes on two former Olympic champions.
00:17:07 Well, one current Olympic champion.
00:17:09 Whoa, yeah.
00:17:11 Wake up, Malin.
00:17:12 Malin Sheru there from Spain, the 2016 Olympic champion.
00:17:18 Next to her in the pink helmet, not this pink helmet,
00:17:20 the other pink helmet is Ricarda Funk, the reigning Olympic champion.
00:17:23 Nomi Fox from Australia.
00:17:26 And then Marjorie DelaSouce.
00:17:30 Oh, a very strong quarterfinal.
00:17:31 What a quarterfinal this is.
00:17:33 This is going to take some winning.
00:17:35 Yeah.
00:17:37 I wonder what the message is from big sister to little sister
00:17:39 about respecting Olympic champions.
00:17:41 I think throw that out the window.
00:17:43 No respecting Kaya Cross.
00:17:45 Kaya Cross, every man for himself.
00:17:47 Respect is for the weak.
00:17:48 Okay, here we go. We're underway.
00:17:50 Oh, and it looks like Sheru gets away to a good start,
00:17:55 as does DelaSouce.
00:17:57 Oh, Nomi Fox, a bit of buffeting going on between Sheru and Fox.
00:18:02 Funk just staying out of trouble, as she does.
00:18:04 She knows what to do.
00:18:06 Oh!
00:18:07 I'm going to see a collision there.
00:18:09 DelaSouce is around.
00:18:10 Fox is around.
00:18:12 The two Olympic champions are third and fourth at the moment.
00:18:15 They're all close now.
00:18:17 This is tight.
00:18:18 This is awesome. Look at this.
00:18:19 This is not going to end well.
00:18:20 DelaSouce takes the lead.
00:18:22 Funk into second.
00:18:23 No, Fox gets back into second.
00:18:26 So it's DelaSouce in front.
00:18:28 Fox second.
00:18:29 Funk third.
00:18:30 Sheru fourth.
00:18:31 They're all low.
00:18:33 No one really nailing that move.
00:18:35 Okay, right.
00:18:37 Now let's see the afterburners kick in for the Olympic champions
00:18:41 as they try and make their way back through this field.
00:18:44 DelaSouce out in front.
00:18:45 Nermy Fox is second.
00:18:47 Riccardo Funk third.
00:18:48 Malin Sheru fourth.
00:18:50 Now what's happening here?
00:18:51 Funk's going to try and take out Fox.
00:18:52 Oh!
00:18:54 Oh, and Sheru gets in there.
00:18:55 Look at this.
00:18:56 What a mess.
00:18:57 Oh, but Sheru hasn't gone around.
00:18:59 So DelaSouce is off.
00:19:00 She's off to the races.
00:19:01 The two Olympic champions there just having a nice old time there.
00:19:05 Going nowhere.
00:19:07 Yeah, getting caught up in...
00:19:09 Oh, has DelaSouce missed the gate?
00:19:11 Oh my goodness.
00:19:12 Has she missed the finish line?
00:19:13 She has.
00:19:14 She must have.
00:19:15 She's off green.
00:19:16 She's missed the finish line.
00:19:17 Oh no, this is a disaster.
00:19:18 These girls in the back thought they were just cruising.
00:19:20 All of a sudden it's a race.
00:19:21 DelaSouce has missed the finish line and has had to go back.
00:19:24 And Malin Sheru...
00:19:25 Wow.
00:19:27 Oh, Marjorie DelaSouce.
00:19:30 What the heck?
00:19:31 That's not meant to happen.
00:19:34 We spoke about it earlier, Ross.
00:19:36 Those last few waves, they're big and they're powerful and far out.
00:19:39 She's been shoved off line.
00:19:41 She was all by herself.
00:19:43 She had no pressure.
00:19:44 So Noemi Fox is through Marjorie DelaSouce.
00:19:50 Oh.
00:19:51 Wow.
00:19:52 She's not happy.
00:19:53 Why would you be?
00:19:54 That's just... that's blowing a race, isn't it?
00:19:56 Sure is.
00:19:57 But Malin Sheru is the benefiter of that one.
00:19:59 Into the semi-final.
00:20:01 Marjorie can't believe it.
00:20:02 She cannot believe it.
00:20:03 I'd like to see the replay.
00:20:04 I'd like to see what happened to her.
00:20:07 But she was so far in front.
00:20:10 Noemi Fox is going to throw a bit to the crowd.
00:20:12 Probably, or maybe just give it to the next race.
00:20:15 Yeah, hard fought from Noemi.
00:20:18 Well done.
00:20:19 Into the semi-final.
00:20:20 So Sheru was in a good spot here.
00:20:23 There's Noemi sneaking under the Spaniard.
00:20:26 And getting into the front.
00:20:31 Now DelaSouce, look at that.
00:20:32 She's so far in.
00:20:33 She's got the race to herself.
00:20:34 They all got a bit congested here.
00:20:38 But DelaSouce still in front at this stage.
00:20:42 Fox second.
00:20:45 Funk was third.
00:20:46 And here was three boats here all trying to go around at the one time.
00:20:55 Yeah, almost a big hit there.
00:20:57 And Sheru just saying, "Just wait. Respect me, please. I'm a four-time Olympian."
00:21:01 But then nobody showed her any respect at all and she got shunted out the back.
00:21:05 Noemi said, "I don't think so."
00:21:07 "Yeah, I don't care. I'm a no-time Olympian. I'm going to just leave you. Eat my shorts."
00:21:12 Here we go, Ross.
00:21:13 Here we go. What has happened here for Marjorie?
00:21:15 Oh, no.
00:21:17 She can't believe it.
00:21:19 She cannot. And she looks around and she says, "Oh, I've got time. There's nobody else anywhere to be seen."
00:21:24 But, oh, the heartbreak.
00:21:30 The heartbreak. French hearts have been broken.
00:21:33 Just shows how demanding this course in London is.
00:21:36 It's big whitewater. Bigger than we're probably used to normally.
00:21:39 Yeah. Look at that, though. Look at the start list.
00:21:43 Look at that. Vuton, Fox, Woods, Sheru in the second semifinal.
00:21:49 There's some quality racing coming our way, Brodie.
00:21:51 Can't wait.
00:21:52 For the semifinal stages.
00:21:55 Now we move on to the men.
00:21:58 And, well, that man is defending his title, Mr. Joseph Clark, Great Britain.
00:22:03 He's already got a world title this weekend. His first ever K1 world title.
00:22:09 I'm sure he would have just kept the lid on his celebrations last night, though, ready to go out today.
00:22:14 And look at this first. Oh, my goodness.
00:22:17 What? Look at this. How has this happened?
00:22:19 How has this happened that you have Joe Clark and Dimitri Marx going up against each other?
00:22:24 It's such a good match-up.
00:22:26 Isn't it?
00:22:27 They are the big dogs of the White Cross.
00:22:31 Big dogs, and they're barking loud.
00:22:33 Let's have a look at Joe Clark, the reigning world champion in kayak cross.
00:22:38 In fact, folks, he's won the last two.
00:22:40 2021, 2022.
00:22:42 Look at him go.
00:22:43 He's a machine.
00:22:44 He's so fast.
00:22:45 And he just gets out in front and defies running down.
00:22:50 Nobody is willing to get in his way because he's like a big steamroller.
00:22:54 You look up and there's a big steamroller coming straight at you.
00:22:57 Yeah, definitely.
00:22:59 It would be a scary sight to be coming down on top of you.
00:23:02 He's fast, and so is Dimitri, and they're both technically good.
00:23:05 They've got it all.
00:23:07 Yep. Yep.
00:23:08 He is--
00:23:09 The British Bulldog, in fact, was named after him.
00:23:12 Joe Clark.
00:23:14 Possibly. Possibly.
00:23:16 I'm not sure if it's true, but it's a good story.
00:23:18 Look at that. They're all saying, "Joe Clark! Joe Clark!"
00:23:20 But look at this here.
00:23:21 They're next to each other.
00:23:23 Dimitri Marx, who is probably the form paddler of the year
00:23:27 and the one that everybody has been going to school on.
00:23:30 Alex Baldoni from Canada.
00:23:32 He was pinching himself that he's here
00:23:35 because his quarterfinal was interesting.
00:23:39 His semifinal-- Sorry, his heat was interesting, to say the least.
00:23:42 Johnny Dixon from Team GB.
00:23:46 Yeah, watch him. He's an underdog.
00:23:48 But he's pretty quick.
00:23:50 Can I put something out there?
00:23:53 Brodie, do you reckon the Brits have come up with a cunning plan
00:23:57 to take out the smiling Swiss, Dimitri Marx?
00:24:01 Because at the moment it's a British sandwich.
00:24:03 Yeah, I think if they're clever, they would have thought of a few tactics
00:24:07 because you've got to do something to stop that man.
00:24:10 As everybody who's been to Britain knows,
00:24:12 it's very hard to get a good sandwich in Great Britain.
00:24:15 They're not very big on the tasty sandwiches,
00:24:17 but there's going to be a Swiss sandwich here
00:24:20 and two Brits on either side of Dimitri Marx.
00:24:23 What are their tactics going to be?
00:24:25 Have they thought this through?
00:24:26 Because Dimitri Marx is the big threat to Joe Clark this afternoon.
00:24:29 And off they go.
00:24:31 Look at Joe Clark.
00:24:32 Look at Dimitri, though, right on his tail.
00:24:34 Right on his hammer.
00:24:35 There's no space there.
00:24:37 Are they going to go the same side?
00:24:38 They are.
00:24:39 Ooh, with retreat. Let's go, guys.
00:24:41 This is going to be interesting.
00:24:42 Oh, look at this.
00:24:44 Oh, Dimitri Marx has pulled a Swifty.
00:24:46 He's got under him.
00:24:48 And then on the other side of the course is Alex Baldoni.
00:24:51 Poor old Johnny Dixon.
00:24:53 He has found a gate that doesn't like him.
00:24:55 He's still back there trying to get around it.
00:24:57 So Johnny Dixon's race might be over,
00:25:00 but look at Dimitri Marx in front.
00:25:01 Joe Clark right behind him.
00:25:03 Surely they'll go to opposite sides of the course.
00:25:06 Joe Clark determined to get in front of the Swiss paddler.
00:25:09 Clark doesn't look happy with second, does he?
00:25:11 Oh, where's Johnny?
00:25:12 What's Johnny Dixon doing?
00:25:14 He's just decided not to do anything.
00:25:16 He's just going to come down and have a--
00:25:18 He's coming down on Dimitri Marx, potentially.
00:25:20 He's just having a-- oh, yeah, they go to opposite sides.
00:25:23 Joe!
00:25:24 Oh, wow.
00:25:25 Dimitri Marx.
00:25:26 I think Baldoni missed that gate, didn't he?
00:25:28 He did.
00:25:29 Yeah.
00:25:30 It's all coming down on the bottom.
00:25:32 Goodness me.
00:25:33 Joe Clark nearly threw it away there.
00:25:35 Yes, but importantly, Marx gets the small W on Clark for that one.
00:25:40 A little bit of confidence moving into the final.
00:25:42 Yeah, and Alex Baldoni and Johnny Dixon,
00:25:45 they've just, as a form of protest, refused to go around any gates anymore.
00:25:51 [Laughs]
00:25:52 They've just said, "Nah, that's it."
00:25:55 They just said, "These guys are not allowed to ridicule us.
00:25:57 They're too fast."
00:25:58 "I'm not playing anymore.
00:25:59 I'm taking my ball and spade, and I'm going home.
00:26:03 My bucket and spade.
00:26:04 I don't want to do this."
00:26:05 Look at this.
00:26:06 Tell me there's no rival between these two.
00:26:08 They've given it everything, haven't they?
00:26:09 There's no eye contact.
00:26:10 No.
00:26:11 It was awesome to see Marx just hold on to Clark at the start there.
00:26:16 Despite Clark having the best spot, didn't give him an inch.
00:26:19 For those who have not watched this sport, I think without a shadow of a doubt,
00:26:22 Brodie, these are the best two male kayak cross paddlers in the world.
00:26:26 Yep.
00:26:27 Now, watch how they go around this.
00:26:28 So, Dmitri Marx has already started turning before he's got to the gate
00:26:33 and just slipped under Joe Clark there.
00:26:37 Classic move.
00:26:39 That's where I thought Joe might be content in second, and I thought maybe not.
00:26:42 He's got that mongrel going in him.
00:26:45 Yep.
00:26:46 And then you can see there, Johnny Dixon, he's had enough for the afternoon.
00:26:49 So, big move from Marx.
00:26:51 Joe got into some trouble here, but he was good enough to recover.
00:26:55 And then Baldogna, I don't think he went around that gate.
00:26:57 But, yeah, it was uncharacteristic for Joe.
00:26:59 That could have been costly if Baldogna had nailed that up.
00:27:02 Has Dmitri Marx got inside his head?
00:27:05 Maybe.
00:27:06 You can hear that Swiss accent just bounding around inside his head at the moment,
00:27:11 inside his cranium.
00:27:12 You can hear Dmitri Marx saying, "You okay, Joe?"
00:27:15 "It's all right, mate. Second's not too bad."
00:27:18 And it's playing on him.
00:27:19 So, I think they'll probably match up again later as well.
00:27:25 Marx first, Clark second.
00:27:27 The rivalry continues.
00:27:34 Final number two, Tadzio Cucino.
00:27:39 I've not seen a lot of this man.
00:27:40 What do you know of his background?
00:27:42 A man from Poland.
00:27:44 I don't know a whole lot about him either, Ross.
00:27:47 So, quietly moving up the ranks by the looks of it.
00:27:50 Maybe he's a kayak cross specialist.
00:27:53 There's Martin Dugwood having another sleep.
00:27:56 Just find it comfortable up there.
00:27:58 Maybe it's the rarefied air up there.
00:28:01 It always makes you tired when you get up higher, I reckon.
00:28:04 It's all that sprinting he's done all morning.
00:28:06 Yep.
00:28:07 And there he is.
00:28:10 Giovanni De Gennaro from Italy.
00:28:16 Oh, look at the fan club here lining up the Poles, the Brits.
00:28:20 All looking forward to some action.
00:28:22 Kuchto from Poland.
00:28:24 De Costa from Belgium.
00:28:26 Dugwood from Switzerland.
00:28:28 De Gennaro from Italy.
00:28:31 Away we go.
00:28:35 Good start from De Costa.
00:28:36 Good start from De Gennaro.
00:28:38 De Gennaro flying off the start there.
00:28:40 Look at him go.
00:28:41 The Italian Ferrari.
00:28:42 He is --
00:28:43 He comes Dugwood, though.
00:28:44 He's not going to let him get there on his own.
00:28:45 Dugwood's chasing him down here.
00:28:46 He's going to try and force him into the ropes.
00:28:48 But good move from De Gennaro.
00:28:51 Good move from De Costa.
00:28:52 De Costa may be in front.
00:28:54 Yeah.
00:28:55 It's tight racing.
00:28:56 All to play for still.
00:28:57 Yep.
00:28:58 So in front it's De Costa from Belgium.
00:29:00 De Gennaro from Italy is second.
00:29:05 Dugwood from Switzerland is third.
00:29:09 Oh, yes, he's okay.
00:29:12 Here comes Dugwood, though.
00:29:13 Oh, Dugwood sneaks under the Italian.
00:29:15 Beautiful.
00:29:16 Had to nail it and did.
00:29:17 Beautiful move.
00:29:18 It looked like the Atlas there.
00:29:19 You had Italy underneath Switzerland.
00:29:20 Switzerland sneaking through.
00:29:22 De Costa in front.
00:29:24 Dugwood now into second.
00:29:25 De Gennaro won't like that.
00:29:27 Who's he going to take out?
00:29:28 Oh, he goes the opposite side.
00:29:29 That's interesting.
00:29:30 Very nice from Dugwood.
00:29:31 Really good move from Dugwood.
00:29:33 We've got to race to the finish here, Ross.
00:29:34 Yep.
00:29:36 And it looks like a pretty easy run here for De Costa from Belgium.
00:29:41 Oh!
00:29:42 What?
00:29:43 What the heck?
00:29:44 What?
00:29:45 What happened there?
00:29:46 Oh, it's all to go.
00:29:47 Here we go.
00:29:48 Whoa!
00:29:49 People doing rolls when you don't need to do rolls.
00:29:52 Goodness me.
00:29:54 You're not meant to do a roll there.
00:29:57 You know, I think Giovanni thought it was over, but you just never know.
00:30:01 Whoa.
00:30:03 What the heck?
00:30:05 Now we've got to consult the rule book.
00:30:06 Are you allowed to do two rolls on a run?
00:30:08 I'll tell you what.
00:30:10 Dugwood almost took out De Costa there.
00:30:13 When he rolled up, he was right in his way.
00:30:15 That was wild.
00:30:17 They put a cue next to De Costa's name, even though he did that non-compulsory roll at the finish.
00:30:22 Just a bit of showboating.
00:30:23 Was he showboating?
00:30:25 Was he showboating as he crossed the finish line, doing a little bit of a roll for the crowd?
00:30:29 Potentially.
00:30:30 I don't know about that one.
00:30:31 And I'll tell you what, it totally threw Giovanni off.
00:30:33 He thought, "Oh, I have to do another roll."
00:30:35 So he did one.
00:30:37 He didn't need to do it.
00:30:39 That last gate is just wreaking havoc, isn't it?
00:30:42 It's adding some spice to the race, isn't it?
00:30:44 It is.
00:30:45 Very nice.
00:30:47 There he is there, the Belgian out in front.
00:30:49 Watch Dugwood here.
00:30:50 This was beautiful.
00:30:51 Yep.
00:30:52 Perfect.
00:30:53 Slipping under.
00:30:54 Look at that.
00:30:55 Slipping over the top of the Italian, De Gennaro not impressed.
00:30:59 And good work there from De Costa, just headbutting the gate as he goes around.
00:31:06 Then Dugwood into second.
00:31:08 Coming up to the finish line, De Costa there having a sneaky roll.
00:31:15 And then so Giovanni says, "Well, okay, I'll have one as well."
00:31:18 Then more Giovanni into the bollards, the rapid blocks.
00:31:23 That was an awesome finish.
00:31:24 That was an awesome finish.
00:31:27 Giovanni's boat, you're going to take that up to the panel beaters, I'm afraid.
00:31:31 Giovanni, you've given that a really good bang.
00:31:35 Sure did.
00:31:37 So, yep, Martin Dugwood goes into first.
00:31:41 Gabrielle De Costa with a bit of showboating at the finish for the crowd.
00:31:44 Big crowd here today, so they would love to see that extra roll put in on the finish line.
00:31:49 Through to the next round.
00:31:52 Here he is, Lucien Delfort.
00:31:54 Oh, the French are at it again.
00:31:56 The two French, they're at it again.
00:31:58 Oh, my goodness.
00:31:59 Oh, no.
00:32:00 It's good to have them side by side.
00:32:02 They can't help it, just can't help it.
00:32:05 Bit of testosterone in that team.
00:32:07 And in the green, representing France, Boris Nouveau.
00:32:10 Twice he's been a world championship silver medalist.
00:32:15 And representing Austria, in the red bib, it's Felix Oshmouts.
00:32:20 Another big guy, strong paddler.
00:32:21 This is another very strong quarterfinal.
00:32:23 Isn't it?
00:32:24 Yeah.
00:32:25 Isn't it?
00:32:26 And I think if you're Delfort and Oshmouts, you think, well, the French will take each other out.
00:32:31 You can guarantee at some stage in this race, they will take each other out.
00:32:34 I overheard some tactics in our team chat with Lucien, and they said,
00:32:37 "Don't think we have to worry about the French working together."
00:32:40 [Laughter]
00:32:43 They are not working together.
00:32:46 Anyway, Lucien just sitting out the back now as the French have decided this time to go to opposite sides of the course.
00:32:51 Whoa.
00:32:52 After the schmozzle of the -- oh, a bit early there, Boris.
00:32:56 What are you doing?
00:32:57 Bit early.
00:32:58 Oh.
00:32:59 And look on the other side, it's Rene.
00:33:01 [Laughter]
00:33:03 Get out of my way, Felix.
00:33:04 Oh, my goodness.
00:33:05 He's hit the face of Felix there a little bit, so that will be interesting to see.
00:33:08 He might get a ral.
00:33:10 Maybe.
00:33:11 That slowed them up so much, though.
00:33:13 Oh, no.
00:33:14 So Benjamin Rennier is in front.
00:33:16 Lucien Delfort, he's just cruising down.
00:33:18 This is like a Sunday morning paddle at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium.
00:33:23 Yeah.
00:33:24 Lucien Delfort.
00:33:25 Keep it cool at the front.
00:33:26 No need to fight, boys.
00:33:27 No.
00:33:28 But Nouveau, we know when he gets the smell of blood in his nostrils --
00:33:30 He is coming, isn't he?
00:33:31 There he is.
00:33:32 He's trying.
00:33:33 He's flying along.
00:33:34 He's ironed someone off.
00:33:35 Yeah, they've done the smart thing.
00:33:37 Yeah, good move from both of our leaders.
00:33:39 There you go.
00:33:40 They're safely through.
00:33:41 Just got to get through that final gate.
00:33:43 That's the trick.
00:33:45 And look at Boris Nouveau.
00:33:46 He says, "Well, thank you very much, Felix, for ruling my race."
00:33:51 Oh, no.
00:33:54 Oh, Lucien.
00:33:55 Why?
00:33:56 I'll tell you what.
00:33:57 You cannot rest on your laurels in that last drop, can you, Ross?
00:34:00 No, I don't even know who Laurel is.
00:34:02 He's been given a fault on the last gate.
00:34:07 What the heck he says.
00:34:09 Oh, no.
00:34:10 That was close.
00:34:11 I thought he might be all right there.
00:34:13 The judges have decided the gate passed on the wrong side of the bonce.
00:34:17 It's a look of disbelief.
00:34:19 How many have we seen up the front, coasting to the end in this semifinals,
00:34:24 and then done that wrong?
00:34:25 He still doesn't understand.
00:34:26 We're going to have to go to the camera.
00:34:28 We've had Costa, De La Souce, and now Lucien.
00:34:31 Yes, we'll have to look at the camera.
00:34:34 Unbelievable.
00:34:36 Oh, what a start.
00:34:38 Goodness me.
00:34:39 The French decided to go to opposite sides.
00:34:42 It's official, Ross.
00:34:43 Nauvoo, the Frenchmen are through.
00:34:45 We get to see them go at it again.
00:34:47 Oh, no, the two Frenchmen.
00:34:48 Look at this.
00:34:49 Look at this.
00:34:50 Schermozl.
00:34:51 Felix, is there a paddle to the face?
00:34:52 Let's see.
00:34:53 Let's have a look.
00:34:54 There's a bit of boat at the start, but I don't think it was much.
00:34:57 It was accidental as well.
00:34:58 Just Felix just getting in the way.
00:35:00 The Austrians getting in the way of the French, as happens so often.
00:35:04 And Benjamin going quite wide there, but just staying safe.
00:35:09 And look at Lucien Delport.
00:35:10 He's just cruising, cruising down here, and then he gets to this finish line.
00:35:15 Look at that.
00:35:16 Oh, Lucien.
00:35:17 It is over the top, isn't it?
00:35:18 It's probably the right call.
00:35:20 Oh, no.
00:35:22 I think, yeah, you've got to paddle hard to the finish.
00:35:25 That last drop is so powerful.
00:35:27 It's just sending your people left and right.
00:35:30 So that is high drama.
00:35:32 High drama for the Australian, Lucien Delport.
00:35:36 Heartbreaking start.
00:35:38 I'll tell you what, you might want to keep the knock-knock jokes to yourself on the bus ride home tonight, Brodie.
00:35:43 Yeah.
00:35:44 We'll give him a little bit of time to cool off after that one, I think.
00:35:48 Oh, look at that.
00:35:49 He's doing the--
00:35:51 He loves it.
00:35:52 He's doing the--
00:35:53 He gets you chappel.
00:35:54 Doing the dingo call up there on the starting platform.
00:35:57 The Iceman from New Zealand.
00:35:59 Who's the cucumber, mate?
00:36:01 The Butcher.
00:36:03 Sitting there, a bit of a chitchat.
00:36:06 I think Metty and Chappel are trying to get inside his head with a bit of idle chitchat.
00:36:12 Eric Holmer, the Swede.
00:36:16 And then David Lorraine always looks lackadaisical, I reckon.
00:36:21 Yeah.
00:36:22 Look at him.
00:36:23 He's another very fast sprinter.
00:36:25 He's in that prime location on the left of the ramp, so I expect a good start from Lorraine.
00:36:31 Chappel, Butcher, Holmer, Lorraine.
00:36:33 Chappel, Butcher, Holmer, Lorraine.
00:36:35 In position.
00:36:37 Ready?
00:36:38 We're ready. Are you ready?
00:36:39 I'm ready.
00:36:40 Let's go.
00:36:41 Hit that button, judge.
00:36:42 Off we go.
00:36:46 So, Chappel, Butcher.
00:36:47 Look at that speed there from the Spaniard.
00:36:50 Lorraine, he's out fast early.
00:36:52 Sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes that can be a bad thing.
00:36:55 Depends on the bloke behind you.
00:36:57 He's gone early.
00:36:59 Lovely move from David Lorraine.
00:37:01 And Butcher too.
00:37:02 Bitten the Butcher.
00:37:03 What's happening to Chappel?
00:37:04 Oh, no.
00:37:06 So, David Lorraine out in front.
00:37:08 Oh.
00:37:09 Bit of a contest at the moment for second between Butcher and Holmer.
00:37:13 It's on.
00:37:14 And Chappel, well, we've seen he shouldn't give up because all sorts of crazy things can happen.
00:37:19 But Lorraine is in front.
00:37:21 The Butcher is third.
00:37:24 Oh, the tactical swing there.
00:37:26 Beautiful.
00:37:27 Swing it back from trying to hit the New Zealander in the golf.
00:37:30 It's killed Finn Butcher's flow there.
00:37:32 Yeah.
00:37:33 Look at this.
00:37:34 It's a big space between first, second, third.
00:37:35 David Lorraine is going along very nicely.
00:37:37 Holmer second.
00:37:38 Now, will Butcher try and take out the Swede?
00:37:40 He's going to try to.
00:37:41 Or it's too late.
00:37:42 Beautifully executed there from Holmer.
00:37:45 But as we know, the race is not over.
00:37:47 He's gloating, Ross.
00:37:48 You've got to get through these gates.
00:37:50 Oh, yep, he's okay.
00:37:51 One through, two through.
00:37:53 Very wise.
00:37:54 Yeah.
00:37:55 Very sensible racing there.
00:37:57 Oh, no.
00:37:58 Finn the Butcher.
00:37:59 Finn the Butcher went the wrong side, didn't he?
00:38:02 I think he's all right.
00:38:03 It was close, though.
00:38:04 Oh, jeez.
00:38:06 Whoa.
00:38:08 Ah, David Lorraine, that is a Kite Cross masterclass.
00:38:12 It was.
00:38:13 And very well raced from Eric Holmer.
00:38:14 That was hard fought with Finn there.
00:38:16 But, yeah, good contest.
00:38:20 David Lorraine, I think, he's taken from the Swiss Kite Cross
00:38:24 playbook there, hasn't he, with his gate manoeuvres?
00:38:28 Yeah, I think every international that we go to,
00:38:31 everyone's getting a little bit quicker in those up gates and
00:38:34 getting a little bit closer to the Swiss.
00:38:37 Just have a look at this move here, folks.
00:38:40 Don't do that in your lounge room at home around the lounge
00:38:42 there because it could end very badly.
00:38:46 But good move there from Lorraine.
00:38:48 Holmer, look at this, swinging the gate back,
00:38:50 trying to get Finn Butcher in the head.
00:38:52 And it threw him off.
00:38:53 And it threw him off his pace.
00:38:56 And there's Etienne Chappell, who had a big drama at his first gate.
00:39:01 Perfect from Holmer.
00:39:03 Under pressure, too.
00:39:05 Very well done.
00:39:08 Good move from Chappell over the other side of the course.
00:39:11 Unfortunately, the race was over.
00:39:17 Happy days, the boys at the front.
00:39:18 Yep, winners are grinners.
00:39:21 Winners are grinners.
00:39:22 Just giving a bit of a smack there in the kneecap just to test it out.
00:39:29 Wow.
00:39:30 Lorente, Holmer, both through to the semifinals.
00:39:36 Let's have a look now at your start list.
00:39:38 Duguid, Marx, Clark, Da Costa.
00:39:42 Well, we can return the favorite there.
00:39:44 We can have a Swiss sandwich with Joe Clark in the middle maybe.
00:39:47 Yes.
00:39:48 And then Lorente, Regnier, Nouveau, and Holmer.
00:39:50 Oh, my goodness.
00:39:53 Some good racing in front of us, Brodie.
00:39:55 Will the Swiss work together?
00:39:56 Will the French work together?
00:39:58 Well, we know the French won't.
00:40:00 They have the slight advantage having a teammate next to them,
00:40:02 but can they take advantage of it?
00:40:06 Oh, wow.
00:40:08 I hope you're enjoying our coverage at home.
00:40:09 This is the 2023 ICF Kayak Cross World Championships.
00:40:14 Here is our lineup.
00:40:16 Here's our lineup for our semifinal, and there is Angel Houg from France.
00:40:20 Angel Houg.
00:40:23 Yep, there's one thing we've learned from today.
00:40:25 It ain't over until it's over, Ross.
00:40:26 Most certainly not today.
00:40:27 And second up in the blue bin, we have Camille Prigent from France.
00:40:32 Two French paddlers right next to each other.
00:40:36 And then Eva Terschel, a former world champion in the K1 from 2019.
00:40:44 Thank you very much for the introduction, says Eva.
00:40:47 And right next to her, there she is, always smiling.
00:40:51 Always smiling, even when she pushes you into a bollard.
00:40:54 Yep.
00:40:55 That's what I like.
00:40:56 I like that about her.
00:40:57 I like that you can still smile when you're basically throwing someone out of the race.
00:41:01 Yeah.
00:41:02 Stephanie Horne.
00:41:03 Stephanie Horne, the current World Cup leader this year.
00:41:05 She's had a great year.
00:41:06 In position.
00:41:08 Yes, we're in position too.
00:41:09 We're ready to bring you this race.
00:41:11 It's going to be exciting.
00:41:12 The first of our semifinals for the women, and we are--oh, where's Stephanie Horne going?
00:41:15 Off to the side.
00:41:16 Good decision.
00:41:17 Good clean start.
00:41:18 Because of that space.
00:41:19 Yep.
00:41:20 And look at that straight away.
00:41:21 She's off and running, Stephanie Horne.
00:41:23 Camille Prigent on the other side of the course.
00:41:25 So they're on opposite sides of the course at the moment.
00:41:28 Here we go, the first gate.
00:41:29 And on this side, it's Stephanie Horne getting around clean.
00:41:32 Camille Prigent also getting around clean.
00:41:34 So a very good start for those two paddlers.
00:41:36 Yeah, everyone playing very nicely in those first few ups.
00:41:38 It's interesting.
00:41:39 Opting just to--
00:41:40 Oh, this could be, though.
00:41:41 I think Stephanie Horne may have just knocked Camille Prigent off the line.
00:41:46 Let's have a look.
00:41:47 We'll get a wider picture in just a moment.
00:41:50 So Horne is in front.
00:41:52 Prigent is second.
00:41:54 Oh, wide line.
00:41:55 Someone's in pain if they can net.
00:41:57 That's okay.
00:41:58 Horne, Prigent.
00:41:59 Oh, and a bit of a drama back there.
00:42:02 Oh, look at this, though.
00:42:04 Tertial's gone into the stopper.
00:42:07 Can't be there till Christmas.
00:42:08 Oh, oh, oh.
00:42:10 Oh, my goodness.
00:42:14 She's out of the boat.
00:42:16 Oh, my goodness.
00:42:17 This is drama.
00:42:18 Stephanie Horne is out of the boat.
00:42:20 We've got a swimmer.
00:42:21 We have.
00:42:22 Can she go down?
00:42:23 Are you allowed to go down without your boat?
00:42:25 I don't believe you are.
00:42:26 We'll have to double check the rule book.
00:42:29 That is something that you do not see a lot of in this game.
00:42:32 No, you do not.
00:42:33 How did that happen?
00:42:34 She was doing a roll, and here comes her boat, so her boat's going to finish second.
00:42:38 I hope she's okay.
00:42:39 She got slammed against the bowline there.
00:42:41 Kind of--oh, and in goes the safety swimmer there to rescue poor Stephanie Horne.
00:42:47 Camille Prigent.
00:42:48 Oh, Stephanie, she's not happy.
00:42:50 There goes the smile, but she looks uninjured.
00:42:52 That's the first time I've seen her not smiling.
00:42:55 I mean, ooh, that's rough.
00:42:57 As a paddler myself, it's humiliating to swim.
00:43:00 You do not like to swim.
00:43:02 It's something we do as kids, and it sort of stops happening once.
00:43:04 I'm not very good at lip reading when people are speaking Italian,
00:43:07 but I think she said, "Do you think they captured that on television?"
00:43:11 Yeah.
00:43:12 Fire out.
00:43:13 What is happening today?
00:43:14 It's been crazy.
00:43:15 That was--
00:43:16 We feel for Stephanie Horne.
00:43:17 That's not the way you want the race to end for her.
00:43:19 Another mistake with someone just way out in front all the time in the world.
00:43:23 Just need to do the basics.
00:43:25 Not even able to execute the roll there, and that's what I think will be annoying her.
00:43:28 It's no one else's fault, I don't think.
00:43:29 World Cup leader.
00:43:31 I mean, she's looking around as though it's somebody else's fault, but I don't--
00:43:35 surely not.
00:43:36 Let's have a look at the replay, folks, at home.
00:43:39 There she is.
00:43:40 She's out in front.
00:43:42 We like to call her Sean Stephanie Horne.
00:43:45 Look at that, and all good there.
00:43:46 Everything's okay.
00:43:48 Tertial right on her shoulder, but Stephanie Horne is in front.
00:43:52 Clearly here, no problem.
00:43:54 On the other side of the course, Pris--
00:43:56 Oh, wow.
00:43:57 These two would have thought it was over, Ross.
00:44:00 They certainly would have.
00:44:02 [music]
00:44:05 And then coming up here for the roll.
00:44:07 So there she goes.
00:44:08 She's gone over, and she's trying to get up.
00:44:10 Nope, nope.
00:44:11 She's missed a roll.
00:44:12 Nope, nope.
00:44:13 Look at this, onto the bollards.
00:44:14 Head first.
00:44:15 Oh, no.
00:44:16 That's got to hurt the ribs a bit.
00:44:19 I think that's just ripped her paddle out of her hand.
00:44:21 Yeah.
00:44:22 Oh, Stephanie.
00:44:23 Can't roll without that paddle.
00:44:24 How frustrating is that?
00:44:25 Look at that.
00:44:26 She can see the bollard coming towards her.
00:44:27 She's thinking, "This is going to end badly."
00:44:28 Yeah, it loses the paddle for sure there.
00:44:30 Yeah.
00:44:31 And then it's very hard from there.
00:44:32 And then the boat has a mind of its own,
00:44:35 and it's determined to finish the race.
00:44:37 It's a very well-educated boat.
00:44:40 But unfortunately, the paddler--
00:44:42 Officially, I've just checked the rules.
00:44:44 The paddler, the boat cannot cross by itself
00:44:47 and claim a place in the final.
00:44:50 No, unfortunately not for Stephanie Horn.
00:44:53 So Prisjet and Tershel go through.
00:44:55 We have Eileen Cheru from Spain.
00:44:57 Stephanie Horn has a DNF next to her.
00:45:00 Did not finish.
00:45:02 Wow.
00:45:03 How much more drama can we have today?
00:45:04 We're still not even at the finals.
00:45:05 The blue bib, it is.
00:45:06 Kimberly Woods for Great Britain.
00:45:07 I can't quite comprehend what's happening
00:45:08 before our very eyes, Ross.
00:45:09 This is wild.
00:45:10 [APPLAUSE]
00:45:12 If we weren't here witnessing it for ourselves,
00:45:16 you would think that somebody had an alleged end to this.
00:45:18 Yeah, exactly.
00:45:19 They told you all this stuff was going to happen.
00:45:21 And I tell you what, you go straight online
00:45:23 and look up the replays.
00:45:24 You would do.
00:45:25 I hope everyone at home is enjoying.
00:45:26 It's very entertaining.
00:45:28 A lot of people would be saying, no, well,
00:45:30 there's two Australians saying it's happening,
00:45:32 so it must be true.
00:45:33 Because Australians never, ever, ever make stuff up.
00:45:37 No way.
00:45:38 And we certainly do not build something up to more than it is.
00:45:41 Look at this final here.
00:45:42 Sheru Woods in Fox Vuitton.
00:45:46 Ready?
00:45:49 And we have a great race here.
00:45:51 Malin Sheru, of course, the 2016 Olympic champion.
00:45:54 Kimberly Woods, two-time-- oh, sorry,
00:45:58 the reigning silver medalist.
00:45:59 And Emma Vuitton and Nobi Fox.
00:46:03 Quite the squabble at the start.
00:46:04 Oh, look at Cherow up against the Bollards.
00:46:06 Oh, yeah, she's been shunted into the Bollards
00:46:08 by Kimberly Woods, I think.
00:46:10 Oh, I mean, in the undercut off here.
00:46:12 So Vuitton and Woods.
00:46:15 And Fox on this side.
00:46:16 On the far side, of course, it's Sheru and Vuitton.
00:46:18 So at this stage, it's the French paddler.
00:46:21 Now, Kimberly Woods is now in front.
00:46:23 Oh, look at this for second spot, though.
00:46:24 It is on.
00:46:25 Oh, my goodness.
00:46:26 Vuitton-- oh, oh, oh, Malin Sheru.
00:46:28 Where's she going?
00:46:29 She's going the wrong way.
00:46:30 She's got to get back on track here.
00:46:31 So Kimberly Woods is in front.
00:46:32 Listen to the crowd getting behind the local girl.
00:46:36 Emma Vuitton.
00:46:37 Got to be good here.
00:46:38 Got to understand the importance of this occasion.
00:46:40 Naomi's in trouble, I think.
00:46:43 Oh, pushing Sheru wide.
00:46:45 Sheru, look at that power from the Spaniard.
00:46:48 So Woods goes over.
00:46:51 So does Vuitton.
00:46:53 Now Sheru moves into third.
00:46:55 So Woods is in front.
00:46:57 You would think an easy race.
00:46:59 It should be an easy race for these two paddlers now.
00:47:01 But my goodness, some crazy stuff has happened.
00:47:04 It sure has.
00:47:05 Here we go, down to the finish line.
00:47:06 They just want to be sensible here.
00:47:07 So Vuitton and Woods just go through the gates, guys.
00:47:11 Just go through the gates.
00:47:13 Thank you very much.
00:47:14 Oh, a bit of a race there for first.
00:47:16 But Vuitton first.
00:47:18 Oh, Naomi's gone on the wrong side of the gate.
00:47:20 She saw Lucy and Delphoi do the same thing.
00:47:22 And so she's gone out in sympathy, I think.
00:47:26 Goodness, man.
00:47:28 Oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:47:30 It's all happening.
00:47:31 That was a good race for first.
00:47:33 That first place is important because it gets you the ability to choose where you start on that ramp,
00:47:39 which is pretty critical because that left side is very fast.
00:47:42 So are you surprised that it looked like Kimberly wasn't really pushing to the finish line there?
00:47:47 Yeah.
00:47:48 Did she take the win?
00:47:49 She did take the win, though.
00:47:50 Did she?
00:47:51 Yeah.
00:47:52 Oh, gee, I wasn't even aware I was sitting from my angle.
00:47:54 She effortlessly did a Ross.
00:47:56 Yeah, okay.
00:47:57 All right, then.
00:47:58 The judges have got better eyes than mine.
00:47:59 These tired old eyes, they've seen it all.
00:48:01 But Kimberly Woods there, good start for her, looking to win another medal in kayak cross.
00:48:12 Vu Thon, now here's where it sort of fell apart for Nomi Fox from Australia.
00:48:17 No Fox in the woods today.
00:48:19 Yeah.
00:48:23 And going on opposite sides of the course, which is a very smart thing to do at this stage.
00:48:28 Yep, playing the percentage game there.
00:48:30 Yep.
00:48:31 Very clever.
00:48:32 So Woods and Vu Thon both heading down to the finish line.
00:48:37 No problems at all.
00:48:41 That'll keep the British fans happy, won't it, seeing Kimberly Woods through.
00:48:49 They're really through the semifinal, Ross, speeding up.
00:48:55 Well, they're into the final, aren't they?
00:48:56 Kimberly Woods and Vu Thon will be into the final.
00:49:01 Ah, yes, so they'll be next in the men's.
00:49:03 Yes.
00:49:04 Let's have a look, though.
00:49:05 A confirmation of our final, two French paddlers.
00:49:09 And in between them, Kimberly Woods and Eva Tertial.
00:49:12 Who would your money be on, do you think, Brodie?
00:49:14 You can't go against Woods at home, can you?
00:49:16 At home.
00:49:17 At home, you'd think Kimberly Woods, and she's got a bit of fire in the belly, too,
00:49:21 because she missed out on the K1 yesterday.
00:49:25 We've seen some impressive stuff from her this year, so.
00:49:28 Yep.
00:49:29 All right, semifinal time for the men.
00:49:31 Oh, my goodness, what a wake-up.
00:49:33 Huge.
00:49:34 Martin Dugard still napping on the start line there.
00:49:37 Gabrielle da Costa from Belgium.
00:49:43 Being the dark horse here, he snuck through.
00:49:45 Joe Clark, the two-time world champion.
00:49:53 How do you think he'll feel after Dimitri Marks got the better of him in the quarterfinal?
00:49:57 I think, honestly, I think he'll back himself.
00:50:00 He'll be wanting to get one back over him and hopefully into the final.
00:50:05 Dimitri Marks, and then next to him, having another little nap, like a little nano-nap there.
00:50:10 Wake up, Martin.
00:50:12 Here he goes, look at this.
00:50:14 Dugard.
00:50:15 Look at that, he's loving it.
00:50:17 He is loving it.
00:50:18 He's in the hot seat, far left.
00:50:19 So are the Swiss going to work together?
00:50:21 Are they going to work together, or are they going to French style, just take each other out?
00:50:26 I think it's harder when you're not next to each other.
00:50:28 You don't know where everyone's going to go.
00:50:30 Yeah, if he was smart, Joe Clark would go to the right of the course and let the Swiss go to the left.
00:50:38 But, well, let's see.
00:50:40 It's going to be a great race.
00:50:42 I'm looking forward to this.
00:50:43 Oh, and Marks is out the back straight away.
00:50:45 What's happened there?
00:50:46 It's all right, though.
00:50:47 Don't worry about that.
00:50:48 He'll get back in there.
00:50:49 Clark and Dugard are the two early leaders as we come down to the first gate.
00:50:55 Whoa, that was very tight from Dugard.
00:50:58 Whoa, and look, this is going to be a big race here between Marks and Clark.
00:51:03 I think Marks felt the wind against his face on that one.
00:51:05 That was crazy.
00:51:07 Well, Dugard is out in front.
00:51:10 Clark is second.
00:51:11 Marks is there reviewing Gabby da Costa, but he's not in the mix at the moment.
00:51:14 So it's Dugard in front.
00:51:16 Joe Clark is second.
00:51:18 Dmitri Marks is hunting him down.
00:51:20 Look at that.
00:51:21 This battle for second is going to be awesome.
00:51:23 This is going to be a big gate coming up here, folks.
00:51:27 Dugard is over.
00:51:29 Clark is over.
00:51:30 Marks is over.
00:51:31 Now will he go after Clark?
00:51:33 Oh, he's going to back himself for the sprint.
00:51:35 Oh, it's a risky move.
00:51:38 Oh, he took his hand off the pedal.
00:51:40 Oh, Ross, pretty sure.
00:51:42 Dmitri Marks took his hand off the pedal.
00:51:44 Is that going to be costly?
00:51:45 I think so.
00:51:47 Wow.
00:51:49 Dugard is through.
00:51:51 Clark is through.
00:51:53 And maybe Dmitri Marks is DQ'd.
00:51:59 Yes, under investigation as we speak.
00:52:02 Fire out.
00:52:03 Well, race from Dugard.
00:52:04 Lead start to finish.
00:52:05 Impressive.
00:52:06 Against the big boys.
00:52:07 Yep.
00:52:09 Yep.
00:52:10 So Dugard and Clark.
00:52:15 Brits are getting sick and tired of the side of the Swiss, that's for sure.
00:52:19 Going to do it again in the final.
00:52:22 Marks not going to Clark there in the last half was an odd choice, wasn't it?
00:52:27 Yeah.
00:52:28 Yeah, I think he should have gone the other way.
00:52:30 He shouldn't have tried to take him out.
00:52:32 He has got a fault, Dmitri, not that it matters because he was third anyway.
00:52:36 But Brody and I both spotted he took his hand off the pedal when he went
00:52:39 around the gate and you're not -- oh, look at him.
00:52:44 That's a bit intimate.
00:52:45 Very intimate.
00:52:46 Look at -- oh, that was lovely.
00:52:51 Obviously they've met before.
00:52:53 I don't think that's their first date.
00:52:54 I hope not because it's --
00:52:58 Yeah, not where you want to be with one of those big --
00:53:01 Big bollards.
00:53:02 Big gates there.
00:53:03 Big bolls.
00:53:04 Giving it a big nose rub Eskimo style.
00:53:05 Oh, no.
00:53:06 Anyway.
00:53:07 So Marks decided to go on the other side.
00:53:10 I don't know.
00:53:11 Probably a dodgy call and then he takes his hand.
00:53:13 He can't do that.
00:53:14 Nope.
00:53:15 No.
00:53:16 It's like he backed himself to beat the person but the other person was Joe
00:53:18 Clark.
00:53:19 It wasn't the average paddler.
00:53:20 No.
00:53:21 He's going to match you in those up streams.
00:53:23 Yeah.
00:53:25 So Martin Dugood and Joe Clark.
00:53:30 I feel a little bit dirty watching Gabriel DeCosta in that gate.
00:53:34 It's very intimate, wasn't it?
00:53:35 I feel like I was eavesdropping on an intimate first date.
00:53:38 Yeah.
00:53:39 I'm not sure.
00:53:40 He was enjoying the experience, to be honest.
00:53:42 But we've all been there.
00:53:43 Certainly the gate wasn't.
00:53:45 All right.
00:53:47 All right.
00:53:48 Second semi.
00:53:49 He wants that spot in the final.
00:53:51 Two of these athletes will go through to the final.
00:53:54 And we've got the Frenchman next to each other.
00:53:56 Oh, yes.
00:53:57 This always gets us fired up.
00:53:58 They haven't spoken to each other all day.
00:54:00 They've been racing but they've not said a single word to each other all
00:54:03 day.
00:54:04 And then we've got Boris Nouveau and Benjamin Regnier.
00:54:07 And then the fourth paddler, probably one of the most exciting paddlers today.
00:54:19 I think he's been one of the four paddlers, hasn't he?
00:54:21 David Laurent.
00:54:22 Yep.
00:54:23 And once again he gets that really good starting spot.
00:54:25 Yes.
00:54:26 And he has the power to make the most of it.
00:54:28 So I expect a good start from Laurent.
00:54:31 All right.
00:54:32 Well, if it was any other country, you'd say the French will work alongside
00:54:36 each other to make sure that they both get through.
00:54:38 But they're not any other country.
00:54:41 No, we haven't been a witness to it yet.
00:54:43 Maybe they've saved it for the semifinal.
00:54:46 Peace has not broken out inside France.
00:54:51 It's like when Napoleon was sent off.
00:54:54 In position.
00:54:55 With all his heels on an island in the middle of nowhere.
00:54:57 Ready.
00:54:58 They don't treat their heroes very well.
00:55:01 Off they go.
00:55:02 Oh, and an early little spill there for Eric Hallmark.
00:55:08 He's going to have some work to do.
00:55:10 So we're underway.
00:55:12 It's the red bib of David Laurent again.
00:55:14 Gets away nicely.
00:55:15 But Regnier, the Frenchman, is chasing him down.
00:55:17 He wants to get under him.
00:55:19 What a great turn from Regnier.
00:55:23 But it's the two Frenchmen now out in front.
00:55:25 Oh, this is going to be interesting.
00:55:27 They're close.
00:55:28 This is going to be interesting.
00:55:29 Nouveau, Regnier.
00:55:31 It's France one and two.
00:55:34 Will they go to opposite sides of the course?
00:55:36 Surely.
00:55:37 Oh, my goodness.
00:55:39 Nouveau first.
00:55:41 Regnier second.
00:55:43 Laurent is just sitting back saying,
00:55:44 "Well, I know these two French guys are going to kill each other,
00:55:46 "so I'll just wait."
00:55:48 Nouveau is first.
00:55:50 Regnier is second.
00:55:51 Here we go, folks.
00:55:53 No, they've gone opposite sides.
00:55:55 Here we go.
00:55:56 They're all close enough.
00:55:57 Isn't that nice?
00:55:58 Beautiful.
00:55:59 Great turn from Regnier.
00:56:00 I think the Frenchmen are both going to go through.
00:56:03 Oh, look at these two characters.
00:56:05 Look at these two characters.
00:56:07 They're putting on a show for the crowd.
00:56:10 France one, France two.
00:56:12 Yes.
00:56:14 I think they may have had a chat before this race.
00:56:17 Maybe.
00:56:19 Nouveau and Regnier.
00:56:20 Here they go.
00:56:22 Look at that.
00:56:23 Missed each other with a high five, but that doesn't matter.
00:56:27 Unfortunately for Holmer and Laurent,
00:56:31 I don't know what was going on with that last upstream gate,
00:56:33 but they were putting on a show for the crowd,
00:56:35 and the crowd were loving it.
00:56:36 Just seeing two blokes going nowhere.
00:56:39 That's right.
00:56:41 Just sitting up and going up and down into one spot.
00:56:43 Yes.
00:56:45 Two Frenchmen just nailing that last upstream side by side.
00:56:48 Yes.
00:56:49 That was perfect.
00:56:53 So, good start by everybody,
00:56:55 except for poor old Eric Holmer.
00:56:57 He almost did a roll before they got to the first gate.
00:57:01 And look at this here.
00:57:03 Great move.
00:57:04 This is where the race was won for Regnier.
00:57:06 He got under David Laurenti.
00:57:10 And then coming around here, and it was France one and two.
00:57:15 You would think there was an advantage being first to the gate,
00:57:18 but in many ways it can be a real disadvantage, can't it?
00:57:21 Yes, definitely.
00:57:22 If the person behind you is close enough, it can be a disadvantage.
00:57:26 You can get lined up and pushed out of the way.
00:57:31 Good race there from Benjamin Regnier, again, another of the athletes
00:57:34 who's probably a bit disappointed with his performance this weekend.
00:57:40 So, he'd be pretty happy to be racing for gold in the men's kayak cross final.
00:57:47 And, wow, what a classy final it's going to be.
00:57:50 Two Frenchmen have done well in the final.
00:57:52 Two Frenchmen and a Brit,
00:57:55 who just happens to be the two-time defending world champion,
00:57:58 and a Swiss paddler.
00:57:59 The Swiss have won so much this year.
00:58:02 Is it going to be Martin Dugwood's turn today?
00:58:04 Or will Joseph Clark go the double gold medal?
00:58:09 It's all in the mix, isn't it?
00:58:12 So, two French in the men's kayak cross and two French in the women's kayak cross.
00:58:17 Wow.
00:58:18 They've had a great day.
00:58:19 Well done, France.
00:58:20 Vive la France, for sure.
00:58:25 This is it.
00:58:26 This is everything to race for here.
00:58:29 Emma Vuitton from France, 19 years of age, going in the yellow bib.
00:58:39 Next to her from Slovenia, it is Ava Turschel.
00:58:46 Komaslala, world champion, a very quick racer.
00:58:49 2019, she was the world champion, yep.
00:58:53 And then Kimberly Woods.
00:58:55 Kimberly Woods.
00:58:58 I'd be scared if I was anyone else now.
00:59:01 Look at that step.
00:59:02 What do you reckon that look, what does that look tell you?
00:59:04 I've got this.
00:59:05 It's the old, eat my dust, eat my shorts.
00:59:10 Get your cameras out now and start filming, she's saying,
00:59:13 because I'm about to bust a move.
00:59:15 But I'll tell you what, there's some pretty good athletes here
00:59:18 who will have a big say in this.
00:59:20 Cammy Prusent, I think, is the big danger for Kimberly Woods.
00:59:24 It'll be on the right-hand side of your screen.
00:59:27 They're the two athletes to watch, I reckon,
00:59:29 because Prusent's been getting away to some very good starts.
00:59:32 Vuitton and Turschel, they're not there just to make up the numbers.
00:59:35 Don't you worry about that.
00:59:37 They will be very, very determined to win a medal.
00:59:39 In position.
00:59:40 I hope you're in position at home, ready for this gold medal race.
00:59:43 Underway, the race for gold, the race for a world title.
00:59:49 And look at Cammy Prusent from France.
00:59:51 Like a rocket.
00:59:52 Blasting off at the start.
00:59:54 Woods is following her.
00:59:55 Woods is following her.
00:59:56 She's gaining back that pace.
00:59:58 She's going to challenge here.
01:00:00 She's going to pull a move.
01:00:01 And it's a good move.
01:00:02 Kimberly Woods gets around.
01:00:04 Listen to the crowd.
01:00:05 That was beautiful.
01:00:07 The crowd have just seen, she's looking up and she's saying,
01:00:10 did you get that on camera, folks?
01:00:12 That was the move I was talking about.
01:00:14 That crowd will be in it here as she comes around this corner.
01:00:16 They'll be pushing her on.
01:00:17 So now Prusent, she's got the opportunity to return the favor, though.
01:00:21 Let's wait and see.
01:00:23 Woods is in front.
01:00:24 The crowd are getting behind her.
01:00:25 Look at them on the hill behind.
01:00:26 They're all on their feet.
01:00:27 They're clapping, they're cheering.
01:00:28 They're saying, go, Kimberly.
01:00:31 Tell you what, Prusent's right there.
01:00:33 Oh, what's happened back there?
01:00:34 Vuitton's gone AWOL.
01:00:36 The top three is all to play for.
01:00:38 Everyone's close enough to pull a drama here.
01:00:40 Cammy Prusent, and they're going on opposite sides.
01:00:43 They're backing each other.
01:00:44 This is interesting.
01:00:45 And Tershell trying to -- there's a race to the finish, folks.
01:00:50 It's Kimberly Woods versus Cammy Prusent.
01:00:53 Woods in front.
01:00:54 Don't stuff up the finish.
01:00:56 Don't be the one.
01:00:57 Kimberly Woods is safe.
01:01:00 So smooth.
01:01:01 The gold medal is going to Great Britain.
01:01:03 Another gold medal to the host nation.
01:01:06 Well done, Kimberly Woods.
01:01:08 Oh, wow.
01:01:11 Look at that.
01:01:12 Is she happy?
01:01:14 Is she happy?
01:01:16 What a treat, this British crowd here.
01:01:19 They love it.
01:01:20 They love it.
01:01:22 Killed it.
01:01:25 Cammy Prusent takes the silver.
01:01:29 Eva Tershell, look, I can tell you, I sat --
01:01:33 Kimberly Woods sat where you're sitting right now, Brodie, yesterday.
01:01:36 And I could tell how emotional she was yesterday.
01:01:39 It was such a disappointing day for her.
01:01:41 She was so gutted by the K1 and everything that unfolded.
01:01:46 I said to her then, I said, well, at least you get the chance to make up for it
01:01:49 in the kayak cross tomorrow.
01:01:51 And she said, just watch me.
01:01:53 Yeah, I could tell she was thinking about the top of that ramp, too.
01:01:56 Good on you, Kimberly Woods.
01:01:59 What a -- raw emotion there.
01:02:01 It means a lot.
01:02:02 It sure does.
01:02:04 It sure does.
01:02:06 Oh, Kimberly Woods, what a way to finish.
01:02:09 What a way to finish.
01:02:11 She's had such a good year.
01:02:13 She sure has.
01:02:15 She won in Prague, second in La Salle.
01:02:19 And look at her, even at the start, she was talking a good talk.
01:02:23 Yeah, yeah, she had the confidence, that's for sure.
01:02:26 She knew what she was capable of.
01:02:28 And maybe she knew there was no way she was going to match Prusent for the
01:02:31 speed early, but she just caught under her.
01:02:33 Look at that.
01:02:34 That is a signature move.
01:02:37 Getting Ansar underneath the leader, buffeting him out of the way,
01:02:40 and then look at that, that look in her eyes.
01:02:42 She's saying, where is that finish line?
01:02:43 I'm heading for it.
01:02:45 Yeah, it's just consistent all the way from here.
01:02:47 I was never in doubt, was I?
01:02:48 She's so good.
01:02:49 Interesting that Prusent decided to go to the opposite side on the last upstream.
01:02:53 Yeah.
01:02:54 Maybe she should have gone the same side.
01:02:56 Maybe she heard that English crowd and thought, you know what?
01:02:59 Maybe she thought I need to actually get out of here alive tonight.
01:03:02 Yeah, I don't want to be the villain today.
01:03:04 I mean, I know the British love the French usually so much.
01:03:08 I don't want to give them a reason to take you to the Tower of London.
01:03:13 I'm quite happy to just get on the train and go home.
01:03:15 Well done, Kimberly Woods.
01:03:16 You're a world champion.
01:03:22 Kayak Cross is alive and well, and Kimberly will get the chance to earn a
01:03:27 quota in Prague next year because she hasn't got a quota here yet,
01:03:31 personally.
01:03:33 Jeez, that's a big one to add to the start list there in Prague next year.
01:03:36 Isn't that?
01:03:38 There we are.
01:03:40 Confirmation, Woods, Prusent, Tershaw.
01:03:42 I'm looking forward to hearing what Kimberly Woods has got to say about her
01:03:44 gold medal effort.
01:03:45 Let's have a listen to our world champion, Kimberly Woods.
01:03:49 Oh, my God, that was an amazing run.
01:03:51 Congratulations.
01:03:52 What do you have to say?
01:03:54 The crowd, you guys, amazing.
01:03:56 Honestly, just like the heartbreak after yesterday's kayak, I was so broken.
01:04:02 I just want to compose myself for this.
01:04:04 This is our event, and, you know, I was absolutely thrilled.
01:04:08 Yeah, definitely.
01:04:09 We could all hear the crowd.
01:04:10 They were so excited.
01:04:12 You've done it.
01:04:13 I know how excited you were to wear that bib number one, and now you're world
01:04:16 champion, so congratulations.
01:04:17 Oh, my God.
01:04:19 I can't believe it.
01:04:33 I'm getting a bit teary myself, Brodie.
01:04:35 Yeah, wow, you can tell that means a lot, doesn't it?
01:04:38 She's fired up.
01:04:39 What an awesome way to finish off a home world championships.
01:04:41 Well, you know, there's only one way to better that.
01:04:44 Big Joseph Clark.
01:04:46 Big Joe Clark making it a British double.
01:04:48 They've done justice here, haven't they?
01:04:49 They've collected some medals, the Brits, far out.
01:04:52 They certainly have.
01:04:54 They're already on top of the leaderboard, and they've just added another gold.
01:04:59 And Kimberly Woods is a world champion.
01:05:01 Oh, Atlanta Marks, that was the smack to the nose.
01:05:06 But Kimberly Woods, I mean, she's been outstanding this year.
01:05:08 She won gold in Prague at the World Cup.
01:05:11 She got a silver in Laseo at the last World Cup, and now she's a world
01:05:17 champion for the very first time.
01:05:18 She won silver last year in Augsburg behind Jessica Fox.
01:05:25 Wow, look at that.
01:05:26 Wow, she's just consistent, isn't she?
01:05:28 Look at that.
01:05:30 That's the sort of action we want to see here.
01:05:33 That's the big move.
01:05:34 That's where the race was won.
01:05:37 Camille Pigeon as well, and Eva Turchill, pretty awesome racing from there,
01:05:40 especially Eva bouncing back from a tough result in Slalom.
01:05:44 She must be stoked with that medal.
01:05:46 Well, in fact, when you look at that final field, Brodie, Woods, Pigeon,
01:05:50 Turchill, and Vuitton, all of them had disappointing weeks, so they all had
01:05:55 something to prove, didn't they, in this final race?
01:05:57 Yep.
01:05:58 You can tell they won potentially more than the others maybe.
01:06:01 They were hungry.
01:06:02 They were hungry.
01:06:03 Righto.
01:06:04 And here is our final.
01:06:07 Take a breath, Ross.
01:06:08 Here we go.
01:06:09 I'll tell you what, there's something to be said for having a quick nap on the
01:06:12 starting platform because it's worked well for Martin Dugud.
01:06:15 He's got a good grip on the brakes.
01:06:16 He's got a good grip on the brakes.
01:06:18 He's got a good grip on the brakes.
01:06:19 He's got a good grip on the brakes.

01:07:20 He's got a good grip on the brakes.
01:07:21 He's got a good grip on the brakes.
01:07:27 He's got a good grip on the brakes.
01:07:33 He's got a good grip on the brakes.
01:07:39 He's got a good grip on the brakes.

01:10:59 He's got a good grip on the brakes.
01:11:05 He's got a good grip on the brakes.
01:11:11 >> What a day for the host nation.
01:11:17 What a day for the sport.
01:11:23 What a day for the champion.
01:11:29 A dream weekend for me.
01:11:35 You were fantastic.
01:11:41 >> Were you nervous?
01:11:47 >> I was nervous.
01:11:53 >> Amazing.
01:11:59 >> He looks tired.
01:12:05 >> He took it up because he missed out on Tokyo.
01:12:11 >> He was a world champion.
01:12:17 I sensed he wanted to take his anger out.
01:12:23 Since that time, he's been a world champion on three occasions.
01:12:29 2021, 2022, and now 2023.
01:12:35 >> We're still waiting.
01:12:41 I haven't seen official confirmation of the placings.
01:12:47 Are we going to assume Martin Dugud got the bronze?
01:12:53 Sorry to our Swiss fans.
01:12:59 >> Let's assume Martin Dugud was the bronze medalist.
01:13:05 Another medal for Switzerland.
01:13:11 Taking fourth spot in the final.
01:13:17 >> It's had it all.
01:13:23 >> It has.
01:13:29 >> We've enjoyed bringing it to you.
01:13:35 We are the commentators.
01:13:39 I love it.
01:13:43 >> What a day.
01:13:49 >> It's been a long day.
01:13:55 >> We're going to have a medal ceremony.
01:14:01 >> It might be a tea break.
01:14:07 It might be time to go to an ad break.
01:14:13 >> We'll be back with more from the world championships.
01:14:19 Kimberley Woods from Great Britain taking the gold.
01:14:25 Cammy Prigent from France taking the silver.
01:14:31 In the men's race, just completed, Joe Clark from Great Britain.
01:14:37 And Martin Dugud from Switzerland.
01:14:43 Third place.
01:14:49 There's no Olympic quotas up for grabs here today.
01:14:55 You can't win a quota if you've already earned a quota for your
01:15:01 race.
01:15:07 Some countries are giving quotas back.
01:15:11 >> Very complicated.
01:15:15 >> You need a Ph.D.
01:15:19 >> They're talking about having it as a course at Leeds
01:15:23 University.
01:15:27 >> I'm not sure if you can race for a ticket to Paris.
01:15:33 I'm assuming that will include getting quotas at the
01:15:39 continentals.
01:15:43 >> That's my understanding as well.
01:15:47 It will be interesting to see who starts in Prague.
01:15:53 >> I think it will be interesting to see who starts in
01:15:57 Prague.
01:16:01 >> I think if Joe Clark has a quota, they will start another
01:16:05 Englishman.
01:16:09 >> And there's still four starts.
01:16:13 >> We've already seen this weekend the tactical moves from
01:16:19 the Swiss team.
01:16:23 >> They didn't want her to earn a quota here.
01:16:27 She wants to get that KIA cross quota.
01:16:31 Then she can go off to the Olympics with her sister.
01:16:35 >> You know who will be training very hard between now and then?
01:16:39 >> Brodie Crawford.
01:16:43 >> The German K1 man.
01:16:47 >> He's going to be a big deal.
01:16:51 >> If Stefan Hengst, who didn't make the heats today, got
01:16:55 knocked out in the time trial, if Stefan Hengst or Hannes
01:17:01 Agner, for example, win a quota in Prague next year, it means
01:17:05 that Germany could then have a starter in the K1.
01:17:09 At the moment they don't.
01:17:13 >> They're four-time Olympic champions.
01:17:17 >> Yes, wow.
01:17:21 >> That will be their backdoor way of getting into the men's K1.
01:17:25 It is last chance saloon, but you don't want to go in there
01:17:29 carrying a couple of jokers in your pocket.
01:17:33 There's going to be some big-name athletes who didn't get
01:17:37 quotas this weekend.
01:17:41 >> They're going to knuckle down now.
01:17:45 >> Anatole Delassus, silver medalist from the world
01:17:49 championships last year, didn't get a quota.
01:17:53 If you are pinning all your hopes on getting that quota in
01:17:57 Prague next year, then you better bring your A game.
01:18:01 And you better bring your feistiness, because there's going
01:18:05 to be a lot on the line.
01:18:09 >> A lot on the line for that next year.
01:18:13 But that's next year. We've still got another race this
01:18:17 year, in fact. We've got the world cup coming up in Prague.
01:18:21 It's our final world cup, so it will be double points for all
01:18:25 our paddlers. >> In Paris, sorry, I just corrected you there, Ross.
01:18:29 >> Sorry, in Paris, yes. Also, it's an Olympic test event.
01:18:33 Unofficially, so they're testing out the course. Have you paddled on it yet, Brodie?
01:18:37 >> I paddled on it about a year ago, but apparently it's very different now. They've done a lot of
01:18:41 changing and really working to make
01:18:45 the course as good as they can, which is good to see. But apparently it's going to be very different to what
01:18:49 I've paddled. So I'm looking forward to it. >> Do you know what sort of changes they've made?
01:18:53 >> Yeah, I think they've fully gotten in there and changed bollards, I think even changed concrete.
01:18:57 They flooded the top area to make a bigger drop at the start, so I think
01:19:01 the first part of the course is no longer almost there from when I was there.
01:19:05 It's now just a pool. So, yeah, pretty radical changes. >> I did
01:19:09 hear initially some of the athletes who were on there early
01:19:13 were saying that it wasn't a big enough drop and that
01:19:17 there needed to be more of a gradient. >> Yes, yeah.
01:19:21 >> So obviously they've tackled that now. >> Yeah, I think they're pretty committed to
01:19:25 changing and making it better, so that's awesome to see. >> I'll tell you what's
01:19:29 exciting about it. We were there a couple of weeks ago for the Canoe Sprint
01:19:33 World Cup, and it's just exciting. Like we had in
01:19:37 Sydney in 2000, you've got the slalom and the sprint venue, Chick by Jowl.
01:19:41 >> Yeah, it is nice, isn't it? Otherwise it can be a bit lonely out there, but
01:19:45 it's a beautiful location, too. The sunset there is pretty nice.
01:19:49 >> It's a bit windy, but otherwise it's pretty good. It's all right. I think
01:19:53 everyone's going to enjoy racing there, and it'll just be nice having the slalom
01:19:57 and the sprint right next to each other. So we are just
01:20:01 waiting now for the medal ceremony. That's going to start
01:20:05 at 3 o'clock, and I can tell you what, there'll be a bit of singing with gusto
01:20:09 this afternoon, because there are two British gold medalists,
01:20:13 and they've had plenty of chance to warm up this crowd. They've
01:20:17 been singing the anthem a few times already this week. >> They have.
01:20:21 They've had an absolute treat. I almost know the anthem now.
01:20:25 >> Do you? >> Yeah, God Save the King. >> Yeah, well, that's the trick, because I have seen a couple of people
01:20:29 mistakenly they just forget to change. It is the King these days, God Save the King.
01:20:33 It is a soul-stirring anthem, no doubt about that.
01:20:37 >> It is, yeah. Very nice. And the crowd gets into it.
01:20:41 >> Look, there's ICF Secretary General Richard Petit there, still eating his lunch
01:20:45 in the background. He never stops. Just go, go, go. Very busy man
01:20:49 in the background. A lot of kids here. I tell you, hasn't it been great seeing
01:20:53 all the school kids here this week? >> Yeah, it's been awesome.
01:20:57 They've been cheering hard and getting autographs. They've been right into it.
01:21:01 When I was going up the conveyor to start my race, they were asking me to tell them
01:21:05 some jokes and all sorts of stuff. >> Did you have any good ones? >> I had nothing up my sleeve, Ross.
01:21:09 It was terrible. You have any good ones?
01:21:13 Surely you have an Australian and Englishman joke. >> No, no, my go-to
01:21:17 joke, whenever anyone asks me for a joke, and I don't know if it's funny anymore, but I'll try it on you,
01:21:21 Brodie. And the kids at home won't understand
01:21:25 this, but people of my generation will, and you will, Brodie, I hope.
01:21:29 So a white horse walks into a bar. Do you know this one?
01:21:33 >> No, I don't know it. >> A white horse walks into the bar
01:21:37 and he says to the person behind the bar, "Could I have a whiskey, please?"
01:21:41 It's a talking horse, right? >> Okay, yep. >> I've never heard of them, but Mr. Ed,
01:21:45 I don't know what his name was. "Can I have a whiskey, please?"
01:21:49 And the person behind the bar says to the white horse,
01:21:53 "Of course, would you like the one named after you?"
01:21:57 And the white horse says, "What, Barry?"
01:22:01 You don't get it, do you?
01:22:05 >> No, that's a dad joke, Ross. >> It's not a dad joke.
01:22:09 No, it's not a...
01:22:13 >> Explain it to me. >> Okay, let me explain it to you.
01:22:17 So there's a type of whiskey... Okay, Brodie, write this down.
01:22:21 There's a type of whiskey called a white horse scotch whiskey.
01:22:25 >> Okay, making more sense. >> So the white horse walks into the bar
01:22:29 and the bar says, "Would you like the one named after you?"
01:22:33 Thinking he or she was being funny, saying, "Would you like a white horse scotch whiskey?"
01:22:37 And the horse says, "Barry."
01:22:41 >> Oh, goodness, that's a ripper. >> It's a good one, isn't it? >> Yeah.
01:22:45 Just don't give up your day job, Ross. >> I'll tell you what, though, if you had told that one to the kids when you're going up the conveyor belt,
01:22:49 they would have started pelting you with stuff. They would have just pelted you with random stuff that was sitting nearby,
01:22:53 because they would have had no understanding.
01:22:57 Well, first of all, because these days it's truth in broadcasting, they would have been saying, "Horses can't talk, mate."
01:23:01 Which is right. They can't.
01:23:05 So anyway, if you're watching at home, you can use that one.
01:23:09 No, you don't need to... No attribution required.
01:23:13 You can use that as your own joke. >> It's going to go viral, that one, Ross.
01:23:17 I'm not sure that it will. I think we'll cut that and put that on Instagram.
01:23:21 >> I've got seven more minutes until the... We've got plenty of time for more jokes.
01:23:25 Plenty more where they came from.
01:23:29 Have you thought up any yet, Brodie? >> I've just been taking that one in.
01:23:33 >> Let's have a look at... There's Benjamin Rennier. He'd be pretty happy.
01:23:37 I'll tell you what, the Rennier fan club has been here this week. Have you seen them? They've been walking around with the yellow...
01:23:41 >> You know what, they're always around, those guys, at most races. They've got his face on their shirt, don't they?
01:23:45 >> It's huge. >> Huge, yeah. >> They love the... >> Popular guy.
01:23:49 >> He is a popular guy. And they would have loved seeing him, because he didn't make the...
01:23:53 I think he was one of the early exits from the kayak, wasn't he?
01:23:57 >> Yes, I think so.
01:24:01 >> I'd be pretty happy to see him making the final today here in Lee Valley.
01:24:05 So they've had a great World Championships. Of course, no World Championships next year.
01:24:09 We don't have World Championships in an Olympic year.
01:24:13 And then Brodie Crawford, 2025. Where are we going?
01:24:17 >> We're going home, baby. We're going to Penrith, Sydney, Australia.
01:24:21 That's pretty crazy to think, hey? The next time we're doing this...
01:24:25 >> Are you ready for us? Are you ready for the world in Penrith? >> We'll be ready.
01:24:29 Just give us a little bit. >> There's a few changes, actually. Speaking of changes to courses,
01:24:33 you've been doing a few things down there in Penrith? >> Yeah, there's been a lot happening.
01:24:37 Yeah, we got a big grant to fix a lot of things that need to be fixed.
01:24:41 Boring stuff like pump maintenance and all sorts of stuff.
01:24:45 But we got a few additions. We got lights, floodlights, so night sessions.
01:24:49 Pretty cool. All new gate systems because they're all falling apart.
01:24:53 What else did we get? All new conveyor belts.
01:24:57 Stuff you might not really notice, but they make a big difference for the longevity of the course.
01:25:01 That's for sure. >> I will notice the lights. >> The lights will be awesome.
01:25:05 >> Because you didn't have any before. So, yeah, it is, I mean, it's...
01:25:09 >> It's been a bit of a struggle for Brodie over the years. It was looking a little bit tired.
01:25:13 The Penrith course. But I've been there just recently
01:25:17 and it's really taken on a life of its own now, hasn't it?
01:25:21 It's picked up. It's going to be exciting. I'm looking forward. I think the world
01:25:25 is looking forward to coming to Penrith in 2025 for our next world championships.
01:25:29 >> Yeah, for sure. It's going to be ready to rock and roll.
01:25:33 Also, another thing, credit to Nick Perry, our
01:25:37 head of science, sports science or whatever in our team. He got
01:25:41 an automated camera system which is permanent all around the course.
01:25:45 On every second pole, the cameras follow. I think it's going to be all pre-programmed.
01:25:49 So you just get off the water and your video is there from the set cameras. >> Can they use it for judging
01:25:53 as well? Probably not. >> For sure. >> I don't know. >> Yeah, it's pretty cool.
01:25:57 >> I tell you what, there will be a bit of pressure on the Australian team, Brodie, after the performance
01:26:01 of Team GB here in Lee Valley.
01:26:05 >> Yeah, there will be a bit of pressure on Australia to step up to the plate
01:26:09 and to win some gold, to win a truck full of gold as the Brits have
01:26:13 done here. They've absolutely dominated, haven't they? What a week it's been.
01:26:17 >> Yeah, I think the home course advantage is massive. But previously
01:26:21 in Australia, it hasn't been that big because of our Australian summers used to be
01:26:25 so crazy for the viewers at home. Pretty much everyone on the circuit used to do
01:26:29 about two months in Sydney when it was snowing over here in Europe. So everyone knew
01:26:33 the weather on earth so well. But since COVID, we haven't seen many people.
01:26:37 So I think a lot of people would have forgotten. And we've got that edge on our home course back,
01:26:41 which is nice for 25. >> I reckon maybe ahead of the
01:26:45 2025 World Championships, you might just want to have a word to the
01:26:49 Albanese government, that's the Prime Minister at the moment, and see if they can bring in some COVID
01:26:53 restrictions again. >> That's right, yeah. >> Just to give everyone away.
01:26:57 And just let them in like two days before the World Championships. >> Yeah, that would be
01:27:01 smart play. >> A little bit harsh for it. >> A little bit dodgy. But I tell you what, Australians,
01:27:05 they love their lockdowns. They'd absolutely love another one, for sure.
01:27:09 >> Oh, dear. >> Oh, this
01:27:13 crowd there. They just want to soak up the atmosphere. They just want to get part of this
01:27:17 medal ceremony action. Let's get this show on the road, folks. Let's
01:27:21 get this show on the road. Let's crown our world champions. They're waiting patiently.
01:27:25 They want to get up there. They want to get the gold medal around
01:27:29 their cruets, and they want to stand up and
01:27:33 sing with gusto. >> That's it. We've got a couple of weeks till
01:27:37 Paris, though. What are you up to, Ross? >> Ah, well, I'll be -- I'll tell you
01:27:41 what I will be doing. I'll be researching the fault system
01:27:45 in Kayak Cross. >> Yeah,
01:27:49 I think we've got it now, haven't we? >> Well, there's a couple
01:27:53 that snuck under our guard here, and we had to go back, and we had to
01:27:57 backtrack, and we actually had to disqualify people after the race
01:28:01 because we didn't realize that they had broken the rules.
01:28:05 So I'll just be getting myself up to speed with that. I reckon two weeks will be about enough time for me
01:28:09 to get my head around it. >> Get it dialed in. Okay. >> When do most of
01:28:13 the athletes -- will most of the athletes go straight from here to Paris, do you think?
01:28:17 >> I think most people from who I've talked to are having a few days off. Yeah. I think a lot of people
01:28:21 are landing there around the 28th. So three or four days just to
01:28:25 take it all in and process it all and reset. >> So when
01:28:29 you say we'll be having days off, you mean they'll be just -- they'll be
01:28:33 taking some time away from paddling or -- >> Yeah, I mean,
01:28:37 we are for sure. I've heard a few -- I mean, the Aussie guys, we're all having a few days off
01:28:41 going traveling, yeah, on our own.
01:28:45 But I heard other European guys are also heading home to their families, and I don't
01:28:49 think a whole lot of training is happening in the next couple of days. There's a few beers being
01:28:53 had tonight, I believe. There's an official after-party, Ross. >> Oh, this is the first I've heard of it.
01:28:57 >> I don't believe that for a second. >> This is the first -- this is obviously
01:29:01 just an athlete's one, which is why I haven't been invited. >> Really? I thought you'd be there. I thought you'd
01:29:05 be the number one man invited. >> Maybe I'm the DJ. Maybe they wanted me to go there and
01:29:09 spin -- maybe they just want me to stand up and tell some more jokes. >> Yeah, yeah. Potentially.
01:29:13 You're the entertainment. >> It's going to be good. What a great party that's going to be. >> Yeah.
01:29:17 So I think everyone's sort of chilling out for a few days before we get back
01:29:21 into it. >> It's a great city. This is a great -- by the way, we're in
01:29:25 Lee Valley, in Waltham Abbey Church, which I know you
01:29:29 love your history. >> It's a beauty, isn't it? >> You would have been up there to have a look.
01:29:33 It is fantastic. Apparently King Harold
01:29:37 is buried there. >> Yes, I saw that. Out the front there was a sign saying -- >> King
01:29:41 Harold. For those -- King Harold, of course, who didn't fare well in the Battle of
01:29:45 Hastings in 1066.
01:29:49 And apparently afterwards nobody wanted to claim his body and then
01:29:53 eventually somebody did. And they believe that he's buried
01:29:57 there at Waltham Abbey Church. But they've done a couple of extensions
01:30:01 so they've moved -- they've had to move it a couple of times and nobody is quite
01:30:05 certain. They're not 100% certain where King Harold
01:30:09 is lying. >> That's crazy, isn't it? It's crazy how history works like that over thousands
01:30:13 or hundreds of years. Especially as an Australian, we don't have that depth
01:30:17 of history, at least since the white man arrived. Indigenous Australians, of course, have been
01:30:21 there a long time. But as far as cathedrals and stuff, it's very different for
01:30:25 us. >> It most certainly is. Because that king -- that
01:30:29 Waltham Abbey Church, it's like about seven centuries it's been there.
01:30:33 It's ridiculous. It's so old. >> Yeah. >> It's so old.
01:30:37 >> It's wild. >> Beautiful. It's wonderful. >> Quite the
01:30:41 lesson from the local priest there when I was there with my parents.
01:30:45 Quite the education on it all. >> Good that you
01:30:49 retained some of that knowledge, too, Brodie, because normally that sort of stuff goes over your head.
01:30:53 >> Like a sponge, mate. >> Exactly. Here we go. It's medal presentation
01:30:57 time, folks. Enough idle chit-chat. Let's sit back
01:31:01 and enjoy the crowning of some world champions.

01:35:39 There are so many tears flowing here that Lee Valley is in danger of flooding.
01:35:43 There's a flood alert just being issued for Lee Valley.
01:35:47 There's a lot of emotion there. Kimberly Woods really just let it all out.
01:35:52 Brodie Crawford after a big week for her.
01:35:55 Yeah, she's certainly, certainly one of the men.
01:35:57 It's hard to, there's highs and lows when you race every day and to just pick yourself back up and start fresh every day is tough.
01:36:03 And you've got to sort of compartmentalize things and she's done that well and now she can let it flow.
01:36:09 Yep, yep. She'll be, she'll have reason to celebrate tonight.
01:36:14 I mean, she'll still feel a bit gutted about yesterday, no doubt about that.
01:36:17 But there's one way to ease some of that pain and that is to get a bit of gold medal into you.
01:36:22 Yeah, definitely.
01:36:24 So well done to Kimberly Woods.
01:36:27 And I was talking to some of the British team today because the way Kimberly was talking yesterday,
01:36:32 she was saying that her chances of getting that quota for the team had slipped away because of her result.
01:36:38 But the British team have told me that's not the case at all, that they've still got more races to decide.
01:36:43 So, and then there's a little bit of discretion apparently, Brodie, which I always think is a very, very dangerous track to go down.
01:36:51 I heard there's a lot of discretion this year for the Brits. It's an interesting, interesting one.
01:36:56 So you're talking about the kayak quota?
01:36:59 The kayak quota. Well, no, sorry, not the kayak quota, the seat.
01:37:04 Who's going to represent Team GB at the Olympics in Paris next year?
01:37:11 Because you've got the two Tokyo Olympians, Mallory Franklin, who did the C1 and won a silver medal in Tokyo.
01:37:19 And then you've got Kimberly who did the K1. Do they send the same team to Tokyo?
01:37:25 Does Mallory Franklin say, well, I was the quickest in the K1 and the C1, I'd like to do both in Paris?
01:37:32 It's so hotly contested between those two.
01:37:34 You would not want to be a selector, would you?
01:37:36 Yeah, it's tick for tack.
01:37:37 A British canoeing, I mean, yeah.
01:37:40 It's a bit easier, Brodie, when you're the Australian selectors and you've got to decide who's going to represent you in the women's K1 and C1.
01:37:47 Yes.
01:37:48 You've got Jessica Fox, world champion in both.
01:37:50 Yeah, for sure.
01:37:52 Olympic champion in the C1. OK, let's sit back and enjoy the medal presentation.
01:37:55 There it is. Go, Joe. Go, Joe.
01:37:59 It is gold medal presentation, men's kayakross.
01:38:21 Ladies and gentlemen, we present the medalists for the men's kayakross.
01:38:26 The medals will be presented by Thomas Konietzko, president of the International Canoe Federation,
01:38:33 accompanied by the representative of the National Federation of Great Britain.
01:38:45 The bronze medalist, Martin Tugud, Switzerland.
01:39:14 The silver medalist, Boris Nauvau, France.
01:39:43 The gold medalist and world champion, Joe Clark, Great Britain.
01:40:12 (APPLAUSE)
01:40:41 Please, if you are able to, rise for the national anthem of Great Britain.
01:40:55 (NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS)
01:41:10 (APPLAUSE)
01:41:35 Ladies and gentlemen, please show recognition for the 2023 ICF Canoe Slalom Men's Kayakross World Championship medalists.
01:41:46 Congratulations, Joe Clark, Boris Nauvau, Martin Tugud.
01:41:51 They are your world championship medalists.
01:41:53 Another silver for Boris Nauvau, by the way. He's won three of them now.
01:41:58 He's like Long John Silver.
01:42:00 He loves it. I don't think he does. I think he'd love gold more, but he'd be happy with silver, though, wouldn't he?
01:42:06 It's hard to complain with silver, but everyone wants that gold.
01:42:08 Everybody wants the gold.
01:42:09 One man that can't complain this weekend is Joe Clark.
01:42:12 He's done everything he set out to achieve.
01:42:14 And a little bit more for Joe Clark. You'll be loving this moment as he exits stage right for Joe Clark, your world champion, three times in a row.
01:42:24 Let's have a look at that final medal table.
01:42:26 Great Britain up on top there. Eight medals overall, five gold.
01:42:30 Australia, two gold, three overall.
01:42:32 The French pick up five medals, which is pretty good.
01:42:36 So there and there at the bottom of the screen, Morocco.
01:42:39 Brodie Crawford, thank you, mate, for your company.
01:42:41 It's been great.
01:42:42 Hope you've enjoyed it at home. Over and out.
01:42:44 See you guys.
