00:00 Hello and welcome along to Invictus Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:20 up all of Kent's sporting action. I'm Bartholomew Hall and here's what to expect on this Friday,
00:26 22nd September. Four from four, winning Gillingham prepare
00:31 to take on bottom of the league two, Doncaster. Are equipment destroyed? Suspected arson attack
00:38 at youth football club brings Rolvindon community together. And we speak to Ashford's Invictus
00:43 Games medal winner as he returns home from Dusseldorf.
00:48 But first, let's round up all of the sport headlines. We kick off with Kent cricket,
00:52 which has faced a challenging week due to the unpredictable weather in Taunton during
00:56 their county championship clash with Somerset. Here's how things looked going into tea this
01:02 evening with 41 overs left to try and chase down. Somerset this evening had things have
01:08 been quite tense as Kent tried to scrape a draw from what has become a heavily reduced
01:12 game. Kent's penultimate championship match has now ended as a draw. Our county side goes
01:17 into the final week on 99 points. Up next is hosting Lancashire on Tuesday.
01:23 Moving on to rugby now, where as well as England, who are preparing to face Chile this weekend
01:27 in the World Cup, Maidstone Rugby Club are also preparing. Dave Chalton says he's keen
01:33 to do the basics brilliantly as his side gear up to face Vigo this Saturday. It comes after
01:38 a staunch first day win for Maidstone last weekend, where they beat Medway Seconds 17
01:44 to 12. The former First 15 skipper says there's a lot of hard work to do, but there's some
01:50 good momentum in the club right now. Maidstone stayed in the Kent 2 league after staying
01:56 up on the final day of last season.
01:59 Now onto motorsport, and the British Touring Car Championship is set to return for its
02:03 penultimate race weekend before the season finale at Brands Hatch. Platte Heath driver
02:09 Jake Hill says he's raring to get going this weekend at Silverstone after having won at
02:14 the circuit last year. Still in with his first ever BTCC title chance, Hill brought home
02:20 a good number of points last time out at Donington Park. He'll be hoping to keep the momentum
02:24 going to keep the hopes alive. Meanwhile, Routon's Napa Racing UK driver Ash Sutton
02:31 currently sits 42 points ahead in the standings and is looking ever closer to claiming his
02:38 third championship.
02:40 Now we're moving onto boxing, and it's a big night on Saturday for Maidstone brothers Sam
02:44 and Sean Noakes who are fighting on the same bill at Wembley Arena. Sam is looking for
02:49 a 12th straight stoppage victory as he hopes to defend his WBC international silver lightweight
02:55 title. He goes up against Carlos Perez, while Sean is bidding to extend his perfect record
03:01 against Lucas Barrabas. It's the first time in more than 10 years since the brothers were
03:05 on the same card, but the pair are looking to make a habit of fighting together as the
03:10 former Valley Park pupils are continuing to make names for themselves in the professional
03:15 ranks.
03:16 Football Now in Gillingham have been fined £12,500 by the Football Association over
03:22 what has been described as vile abuse and language at the worst end of the spectrum
03:27 by a small group of supporters. The charge relate to three separate crowd control incidents
03:32 last season over the space of two months, including racist and sexist abuse. In a statement,
03:38 the club says that they take the findings from the FA seriously and that it will continue
03:42 to reinforce their zero tolerance policy via all messaging avenues and introduce a sanctions
03:49 policy. The club has also invited fans to join them in preventing discrimination and
03:54 abuse at Priestfield.
03:57 Looking towards the weekend, top of the table Gilles are set to face bottom of league two
04:01 Doncaster Rovers. The Gilles will travel up to South Yorkshire having won their last four
04:06 games in all competitions. Last time Gillingham had an away trip, things didn't quite go to
04:11 plan as they lost 2-0 at Grimsby, their worst performance of the season so far. However,
04:16 manager Neil Harris believes Doncaster are not a side to underestimate.
04:20 Another tough one Donny, again just another, he's really going to sum up league two. Doncaster
04:27 are a good side. Anyone who's looking at the league table, whether that's in my changing
04:31 room or outside the changing room, don't be fooled about Doncaster. They've got an experienced
04:36 manager, a good manager and they've got some really good players that have played really,
04:40 really well in games. So we're fully expecting another tough encounter.
04:45 And don't forget you can keep up to date with all the latest Gillingham FC news by reading
04:49 Kent Online. But did you also know you can have your weekly digest of Gilles news sent
04:55 directly to your email inbox. Just search Kent Online email alerts and sign up on the
05:00 website for all the latest written transfer news, match reports and interviews. And of
05:04 course if the Gilles isn't your cup of tea, there's plenty more emails alerts to choose
05:08 from, including all the latest from KMTV.
05:11 Now during the week Margate and Folkestone met for their third derby in the past few
05:15 weeks after not being able to get a winner in their FA Cup round two qualifier last weekend,
05:21 which of course pushed them to that replay. So let's take a look back at the midweeks
05:25 and a look forward to the fixtures that are happening this weekend.
05:28 Starting with those clubs looking to make it into the National League in the Itsmian
05:32 Premier Division, Margate will travel to Essex to take on Canvey Island. It comes after that
05:37 midweek FA Cup replay win over Folkestone. 3-1 was the final score at Sheraton Road,
05:43 which is exactly where Folkestone will stay this weekend as they hope to get back on the
05:47 ball and get a home win over visiting Whitehawk.
05:50 Our supporters are always very, very good and we're lucky to have them. I have said
05:56 in there to the players that they owe them a performance on Saturday because what they
06:01 got tonight wasn't good enough.
06:03 Meanwhile top of the table Chatham will be hosting Lewis at home. The Chats haven't won
06:08 a match since their five game unbeaten run ended at the end of August. Midweek for them
06:13 was a goalless visit to Potters Bar Town where neither team could get it past the posts.
06:18 The National League South returns this weekend after FA Cup action last time out. Bath City
06:23 will welcome Dover Athletic and the Stones are hosting Worthing.
06:27 But all eyes are on the West Kent derby between Dartford and Tunbridge this Saturday, both
06:32 sides struggling to make waves in the league so far this season. In the last eight meetings
06:36 between these two sides the Darts have gone home as the winners five times, but manager
06:41 Alan Dowson says that this week they'll have to stay sharp if they're going to beat the
06:45 Angels.
06:47 Next and in the National League, a second half equaliser on Tuesday night against Woking
06:51 means that going into this Saturday Ebbsfleet have earned one point in their last three
06:56 games.
06:57 The big question however is all about Ebbsfleet star striker Dominic Pelléon, who came off
07:02 at the break midweek. Many, including Denis Kutryb, are hoping his fatigue is down to
07:07 recently returning from international break rather than injury.
07:10 "We will see. I can't tell you exactly if he's injured or just a little bit fatigued
07:15 so we will assess him tomorrow and we'll know a little bit more. That's always a problem
07:20 when you need to make decisions if internationals are right or wrong and if you should go or
07:24 if you shouldn't go. At the end of the day the player needs to decide but I have my own
07:28 opinion on that because you can see he had a little jet lag on Saturday."
07:32 And finally, as you've been hearing, Gillingham go up against the Doncaster Rovers this Saturday.
07:37 The Gills are in top form at the moment, winning their last three in League Two and currently
07:41 sitting top of the table.
07:43 Hosts Doncaster won their first game of the season so far last weekend thanks to a 96th
07:49 minute win at Forest Green, whilst the Gills have six wins from eight. And despite being
07:53 top of the table, goalkeeper Jake Turner says the Gills have got to work hard if they want
07:58 to stay there.
07:59 "Obviously it's a good place to be at the moment but like we say it's still so early,
08:02 so many more games to come, so many tough games coming up. So it's a good place to be
08:06 at the moment but we have to just try and keep the wins coming and see how long we can
08:10 stay there."
08:11 A fire which tore through the equipment hut of a football club in Tenterden is believed
08:16 to have been started deliberately, that's according to Kent Fire and Rescue Service.
08:20 Rolvenden Tigers Football Club says that they're having to start again after losing everything.
08:26 But now the local community has rallied around the club and have raised more than £5,000
08:31 to get the club back kicking.
08:33 Well I went along to Rolvenden on Thursday to speak with the club chairman, Ezio.
08:38 "You can see just how bad the damage has been caused here by that fire. I'm told thousands
08:44 of pounds of equipment belonging to the Rolvenden Tigers has been destroyed practically overnight.
08:51 Just to give you a bit of context, I'm standing in a playing field in the Rolvenden countryside
08:57 at the moment and it's here where 80 children meet weekly to play football and to train.
09:03 Now we heard from Kent Fire and Rescue Service earlier in the week. They told us that on
09:08 Wednesday morning they attended with one fire engine to put out this fire and that they
09:14 believe the fire was caused intentionally. So we are talking about a potential arson
09:19 attack on this football club. And to put things into perspective, just two days before the
09:24 fire was put out on Wednesday morning, children as young as five were playing in this very
09:30 field. Now that's what we know from Kent Fire and Rescue Service at this time. From Kent
09:35 Police, they told us that they have opened an investigation and that they're looking
09:38 at a time period between 8pm when the club and the organisers here left the field on
09:44 Monday and 7am when the fire was eventually put out on Wednesday morning. Now to talk
09:50 a bit more about this now, I'm joined by Ezio, the club chairman here. Thank you very much
09:54 for joining us. The reason why I'm bringing you in now to talk about that time period
09:58 is because you've sort of moved on as a club now from asking for donations, which have
10:02 been very successful, but to ask for more information from those in the community that
10:07 might have CCTV footage. Can you tell me about that? Yes, we've had the outreach from the
10:12 local community and local football clubs in the surrounding area has been fantastic, which
10:17 we really appreciate. But as you say, we're looking now for a bit of support by the local
10:22 community in terms of if anyone had seen anything, regardless of how small it may have been,
10:27 any camera doorbell footage, any sort of CCTV, anything like that, or passers-by, anything
10:37 that people have got that they may be able to forward on to allow the police to continue
10:41 their investigations, find who's caused all the damage really. But talking about the community,
10:48 they have been fantastic to you so far. The last time I looked today, your GoFundMe page
10:52 had about £5,000 raised. How much will that go towards replacing the equipment? Will you
10:58 be able to replace it all? Yes, it will help massively. I mean, the costs just associated
11:04 with the toilet that's been damaged and the stuff inside, it will definitely help. It's
11:13 going to go a long way to replacing the cabin itself and the inside of it, but it will help.
11:21 Just finally then, really quickly, what's going to happen next Monday? Will you be back,
11:25 just in a couple of words? Yes, hopefully. We have games that we're going to try and
11:28 get on for the weekend and hopefully be back here Monday to train again. All right, thank
11:31 you very much for joining us. Now we've reached half-time, which means it's time for a break,
11:35 but coming up, I'll be speaking with Johnny Ball, the man from Ashford who won a bronze
11:40 weightlifting medal at last week's Invictus Games after a motorcycle crash changed his
11:44 life. You can hear his incredible story and just why he's using his success to encourage
11:50 more people to get active who are going through tough times. More from this and more in just
11:55 a few minutes.
