00:01:29 Now you're not going to compare them little itty-bitty bus seats with the seats on my train, are you?
00:01:34 Oh, Daddy, you get to see so much more scenery on a bus.
00:01:37 I think I feel a knife in my back, Helen.
00:01:40 Oh, Frank.
00:01:41 Oh, wait a minute. Father, I've seen his daughter all summer. He's got a right to expect a little of...
00:01:47 Love and respect.
00:01:48 That's right, yeah.
00:01:49 And that's exactly what you're going to get.
00:01:51 Hey!
00:01:52 [Splash]
00:01:53 [Splash]
00:01:54 [Splash]
00:01:55 Hey, wait a minute.
00:01:56 What do these people say?
00:01:58 Why, they will say that, well, who's that lucky man with that pretty girl draped around his neck? That's what they'll say.
00:02:04 Say, did you learn anything in that summer school, Angel?
00:02:07 Oh, yes. I learned the next time you get transferred, I'm going with you. I miss you too much.
00:02:12 That's my girl.
00:02:14 Well, it's going to be good to see Harlan again. I wish he could have come with you.
00:02:20 Oh, you know, Harlan, your brother hears the basketball bouncing, he starts bouncing.
00:02:24 [Footsteps]
00:02:35 Hey, save it for Das Cruces, Harlan.
00:02:37 Oh, Daddy.
00:02:38 Damn it, boy. Don't you start anything you can't wind up.
00:02:41 Hey, easy, cousin.
00:02:42 You cheap shot. Just think on behaving like your old man's sheep. Back in my country...
00:02:48 Tell us all about it, Okie.
00:02:50 Sure, Jap. Back in my country, people know their place. You Japs.
00:02:57 Why, you...
00:02:58 [Splash]
00:03:01 Jap!
00:03:05 [Grunting]
00:03:23 Jap!
00:03:25 [Grunting]
00:03:41 Now, gentlemen, this is unsatisfactory.
00:03:48 We're not going to have this happen one more time, are we?
00:03:57 [Music]
00:04:13 Well, I'm all set. I surely templed all the credit for one of those brass tips.
00:04:19 Dad, I think you got a good transfer this time.
00:04:22 I hope so, Amy.
00:04:24 Well, it's not Oklahoma, but thank God it's not Arkansas again.
00:04:29 What do people do around here for fun?
00:04:31 Well, you can go down and join the crowd watching the Chinaman steam pressing machine.
00:04:36 Oh, why, the main street light changes every 30 seconds.
00:04:39 It's a long way from Stillwater, ain't it?
00:04:41 Oh, I have no complaint. It's so quiet and peaceful here.
00:04:45 How about the picture shop? I think it's Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
00:04:50 Maybe tomorrow. I still feel glued to that bus seat. I need to go take a walk.
00:04:54 Well, there's a few flower farms just a few blocks away. You could go out and watch the buds open.
00:04:59 Hey, it's getting dark soon. I think you ought to wander around alone.
00:05:04 Well, what can happen?
00:05:06 Now, watch yourself, dear.
00:05:08 Have a good time, dear.
00:05:11 Hi.
00:05:21 Oh, hello.
00:05:24 Well, welcome to California.
00:05:27 You're Eileen, right?
00:05:28 Right.
00:05:29 My name is Kramer.
00:05:31 Besides being your next door neighbor, I'm going to be your English lip teacher.
00:05:36 Oh, how nice.
00:05:37 Well, your family certainly have been looking forward to seeing you.
00:05:42 I felt the same way myself, having you in my class.
00:05:46 Well, I won't bother you anymore. I'm just going to take a look around before dark.
00:05:50 Well, thank you for saying hello.
00:05:53 It's nice to know you. Bye.
00:05:54 Bye.
00:05:55 Bye.

00:07:10 Does anybody here speak American English?
00:07:18 I can manage a few words.
00:07:22 It's all right. She's a friend.
00:07:25 She's the new station master's daughter.
00:07:33 Small town.
00:07:34 My name is David.
00:07:36 This is my father, Archiro Tayanika.
00:07:43 It's unusual, but I welcome.
00:07:48 Well, Mr. Tayanika, I was walking through the fields on my way home and I heard the music and I just couldn't resist.
00:07:55 It's fine. Stay.
00:07:58 We eat?
00:07:59 David?
00:08:01 Sure.
00:08:07 You're at the O'Ban, or the Festival of the Lantern, or the Feast of All Souls.
00:08:11 Take your pick. All three names are correct.
00:08:14 It's just beautiful.
00:08:16 Ma, this is, I think your last name is Philip?
00:08:20 Eileen Philip.
00:08:21 I know your brother Harlan. He's a tough man on the basket.
00:08:24 Welcome. Your father and mother have much pretty girls.
00:08:29 Oh, please have some.
00:08:30 No, Ma. She doesn't want any of that jive.
00:08:33 There's something inside you might like much better.
00:08:35 Oh, that's all right. I like Chinese food.
00:08:44 Here.
00:08:48 Shazam!
00:08:49 Oh, that's funny.
00:08:51 Oh, it's as funny as not knowing Chinese from Japanese.
00:08:53 I'm sorry.
00:08:54 Here. Eat.
00:08:57 Thank you.
00:08:58 You're welcome.
00:09:00 It's not too Japanesey. I'm lucky.
00:09:04 Dad always thought, to win in America, be American.
00:09:11 Mom, she kind of holds on to some of those old customs.
00:09:18 Don't tell me there's a poetry nut here, too.
00:09:20 Pardon?
00:09:21 That's what my brother calls me, a poetry nut.
00:09:23 Really? Well, so am I.
00:09:25 But I'm not sure I always understand it.
00:09:27 He does.
00:09:28 Come on.
00:09:40 That's my older cousin, Tadashi.
00:09:47 Here's something else you might like to see.
00:10:07 Want to swing?
00:10:09 It looks like fun, and I'd love to, but I've really got to go.
00:10:13 We'd like you to stay.
00:10:16 I appreciate it, but I must go.
00:10:19 If you have to, I'll drive you home, okay?
00:10:22 Well, okay.
00:10:26 Okay.
00:10:37 How about this one?
00:10:40 To one who has been long in a city pent, it is very sweet to look into the fair and open face of heaven,
00:10:46 to breathe a prayer full in the smile of the blue firmament.
00:10:51 John.
00:10:53 You're very good.
00:10:58 That was my road.
00:11:03 Your turn.
00:11:12 The world is too much with us, late and soon.
00:11:16 Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers.
00:11:20 Little we see in nature that is ours.
00:11:24 Shakespeare?
00:11:26 Wordsworth.
00:11:28 I always get those two confused.
00:11:33 It's really great to know someone who likes poetry.
00:11:36 My folks don't understand it at all.
00:11:38 Mine neither.
00:11:44 You're about to have one of my songs.
00:12:13 No, I love it.
00:12:42 What else do you like, David?
00:12:46 I like Bob Hope, Crosby songs, basketball, Hemingway, Colliers, Ronald Lloyd.
00:12:57 What else?
00:13:01 You're very pretty, Eileen.
00:13:06 It's nice of you to say so.
00:13:13 David, I really have to go home.
00:13:17 I'd like to see you again, Eileen.
00:13:20 What?
00:13:21 You don't have to.
00:13:23 I want to.
00:13:25 We can -- we can go to a drive-in movie, Friday night?
00:13:32 I don't know.
00:13:34 Saturday night?
00:13:37 It's not that.
00:13:38 It's just that --
00:13:42 You're right.
00:13:44 Absolutely right.
00:13:47 Oh, David, I didn't mean it that way.
00:13:51 I just meant that --
00:13:55 I'm scared.
00:14:17 I didn't think you were coming.
00:14:19 I almost didn't.
00:14:22 I told my folks I was going roller skating.
00:14:24 I told my folks I was going to a recital with Miss Kramer.
00:14:38 It's lovely.
00:14:42 You're simply beautiful.
00:14:47 But?
00:14:49 You're simply beautiful, but?
00:14:53 Four weeks.
00:14:55 Four weeks of empty beaches and dark corners.
00:15:05 There's a cave over here!
00:15:10 Girl who wishes to be kissed in secret will find a cave?
00:15:13 Japanese proverb?
00:15:15 It's a medium.
00:15:34 How's the rich Tarzan?
00:15:36 I love Tarzan.
00:15:39 What else do you love, Eileen?
00:15:41 I love beach caves, security blankets, putting pennies on railroad tracks, daffodils, butterflies, cold hot dogs, and --
00:15:53 and an angle-eyed Japanese-American boy named David --
00:15:58 I don't know anything about you.
00:16:00 Do Japanese gentlemen have middle names?
00:16:03 Thomas.
00:16:05 David Thomas Tayunika.
00:16:07 Well, David Thomas Tayunika, I love you.
00:16:21 You're an honor student, an all-conference basketball guard, an Eagle Scout?
00:16:25 Why would you be interested in me?
00:16:27 I'm nothing but a nobody.
00:16:29 You're beautiful, smart, sensitive.
00:16:32 Why would you love me?
00:16:34 Nothing but a chap.
00:16:36 I'm sorry.
00:16:40 I do love you, Eileen.
00:16:43 It's wrong, and it's right.
00:17:01 Two candles?
00:17:02 Two months.
00:17:05 We even got our own private harbor.
00:17:07 Doesn't everybody?
00:17:08 I've never known anyone like you, Eileen.
00:17:10 White, yellow, purple, low shot shoes.
00:17:12 And you're never again going to know anybody like me.
00:17:15 Eileen.
00:17:17 Tayunika.
00:17:20 Eileen Tayunika.
00:17:24 Do you really believe it?
00:17:27 Eileen Tayunika?
00:17:29 Do you believe in David Tayunika?
00:17:34 Eileen Tayunika.
00:17:38 I believe it.
00:17:40 Then it's settled.
00:17:41 We're getting married.
00:17:43 They won't let us, our families.
00:17:45 I know, but we're going to do it.
00:17:47 When?
00:17:48 On a Sunday.
00:17:49 That's when everybody gets married.
00:17:50 How?
00:17:51 Leave it to me.
00:17:52 I know a man.
00:17:53 What?
00:17:54 You can't get married by just any old man.
00:17:56 You can by this man.
00:17:57 But we need a witness.
00:17:59 Miss Kramer.
00:18:01 We're really going to do it.
00:18:05 No more dark corners.
00:18:07 I love you.
00:18:14 Different colored flowers grow side by side.
00:18:17 Make fine garden.
00:18:20 Armenian proverb.
00:18:23 Japanese.
00:18:25 My father.
00:18:29 Still feel the same, honey?
00:18:31 Mm-hmm.
00:18:32 Why don't you just take it easy now, Russ?
00:18:34 The best thing for a headache.
00:18:35 Look at this.
00:18:36 If it's not gone by the time we get back,
00:18:38 we'll have the doctor in.
00:18:40 I'm sorry I'm not going with you.
00:18:41 So are we.
00:18:42 Bye-bye, Aiden.
00:18:43 Don't fret about that.
00:18:46 Think of me.
00:18:48 What?
00:18:49 In church, say a little prayer for me.
00:18:51 You feel that badly?
00:18:53 No.
00:18:54 But I'm sure it'll help.
00:18:57 Bye, Aiden.
00:18:58 Stay warm, dear.
00:19:21 David, I just don't know.
00:19:24 I've known your father for so many years,
00:19:26 and it's not right to do this to him.
00:19:30 But what about her parents?
00:19:32 Father, once it's done, they'll accept it.
00:19:35 You're so young.
00:19:36 You're just children.
00:19:37 Father, there's no age limit on being in love.
00:19:40 I know what I feel.
00:19:42 Maybe.
00:19:44 And maybe not.
00:19:50 Maybe.
00:20:02 You still want me?
00:20:04 Yes.
00:20:05 I want you.
00:20:07 Father, this is Eileen Helen Phillips.
00:20:10 Hello, Eileen.
00:20:11 Hello, Father.
00:20:13 He won't say yes.
00:20:14 He won't say no.
00:20:15 You work on him.
00:20:18 Eileen, this is a very important decision.
00:20:22 I want to be his wife.
00:20:25 It's especially difficult when you have the burden of other people's prejudice.
00:20:29 And have it you will.
00:20:31 I know.
00:20:32 I'm not sure that you do.
00:20:35 If you're willing to enter into marriage,
00:20:37 your eyes wide open,
00:20:38 knowing that it's going to be extremely difficult.
00:20:41 There'll be happiness too, Father.
00:20:43 Enough for me, no matter how difficult it gets.
00:20:46 If I refuse to marry you, what then?
00:20:49 I guess we'll just have to be married in the eyes of God.
00:20:52 You mean that?
00:20:54 I don't want to live without him, Father.
00:20:56 I know only too well that it's right for both of us.
00:20:59 How can you be so sure?
00:21:03 There comes one moment once,
00:21:06 and God help those who pass that moment by,
00:21:10 when beauty stands looking into the soul
00:21:13 with grave sweet eyes.
00:21:17 Yes.
00:21:18 Her stand.
00:21:23 [Music]
00:21:27 [Music]
00:21:34 [Music]
00:21:41 [Music]
00:21:48 [Music]
00:21:55 [Music]
00:22:02 [Music]
00:22:09 Here they come.
00:22:11 Nervous?
00:22:12 Yeah.
00:22:14 They think I'm homesick.
00:22:16 Then they find out I'm married.
00:22:18 [Music]
00:22:23 Folks!
00:22:24 Hey, folks!
00:22:26 Before you hear anything else,
00:22:28 I want you to know we've got everything taken care of.
00:22:33 The Japs have bombed Pearl Harbor.
00:22:38 What?
00:22:40 Pearl Harbor.
00:22:42 That's in Hawaii.
00:22:44 Say, you people, you just go on home now
00:22:47 and turn on your radios and don't get excited.
00:22:50 If we need any of you, we'll holler for you.
00:22:53 [Music]
00:23:22 [Music]
00:23:47 This is not another Orson Welles radio play.
00:23:49 This is the tragic and real thing.
00:23:51 The Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor.
00:23:54 The Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor.
00:23:57 A few short hours ago, without warning,
00:23:59 the Japanese launched an unprovoked attack
00:24:01 on U.S. ships in the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii,
00:24:04 and simultaneously attacked strategic points
00:24:07 in the Philippines and the island of Guam.
00:24:10 Japanese planes also bombed targets in Singapore and Hong Kong.
00:24:13 Japanese troops also landed in Malaya
00:24:16 and crossed into Thailand from Indochina.
00:24:19 And all of this while the Japanese envoys were in Washington
00:24:22 assuring our government of their government's wish for peace.
00:24:26 Now the question that is being asked is
00:24:28 how much of the destruction that occurred in Pearl Harbor
00:24:31 was the result of sabotage?
00:24:34 Until an investigation has been made, of course,
00:24:36 one can only speculate.
00:24:38 And while the Japanese attack was a complete surprise,
00:24:41 it did come at the end of a series of events
00:24:43 that have continued to increase the strain and tension
00:24:46 in Japanese relations with the United States and Great Britain.
00:24:49 Here's another bulletin just handed to me.
00:24:51 Russian armies have broken through the German line
00:24:54 on the Moscow front at two points
00:24:56 and destroyed two German divisions.
00:24:58 Now back to the background of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
00:25:01 Made in China, Dad. No problem, right?
00:25:04 No. No, not a chance.
00:25:07 Let's go. Let's go.
00:25:10 Japan invaded China, captured Canton...
00:25:13 Japan...
00:25:15 Miss Kramer?
00:25:22 Eileen?
00:25:24 The whole town's gone mad.
00:25:29 Eileen?
00:25:32 They know about you and David?
00:25:34 No. We couldn't tell them. They've got enough problems.
00:25:38 I'm so sorry.
00:25:41 (crickets chirping)
00:25:44 (doorbell rings)
00:25:52 Miss Kramer. Hello. Come in. Come in.
00:26:03 My name is Mr. and Miss Kramer,
00:26:06 and our Oban visitor, Eileen Phillips.
00:26:10 Um, Mr. and Mrs. Tayanaga,
00:26:13 a number of us have been going to all the Japanese families
00:26:18 and telling them that, uh,
00:26:21 we're sorry, we're concerned,
00:26:25 and we'll help in any way.
00:26:28 (speaking Japanese)
00:26:31 Thank you. Thank you.
00:26:35 Hi, Dad. The radio says we Californians have been building an army and are ready to rise.
00:26:40 Yes, and they're saying we've sprayed the truck produce with arsenic in the last two days
00:26:45 and put ground glass in the raw fish that has been delivered to the market.
00:26:50 But are they gonna remember that there are 78,000 Japanese Americans who have never seen Japan?
00:26:56 Will they remember how many Japanese fought in World War I?
00:27:01 Take a look in your father's closet. He still has the uniform and the medal.
00:27:06 We don't know what to expect,
00:27:15 so we stay together and we pray.
00:27:20 Thank you for coming.
00:27:24 Not at all.
00:27:27 I'll see you out.
00:27:31 David?
00:27:40 Not now.
00:27:43 I'll meet you at the arbor, about 8.
00:27:47 I'll be there.
00:27:51 I'll always be there.
00:27:54 I'll always be there.
00:27:57 And we thank you for the food on our table.
00:28:00 We ask that you help keep our family together.
00:28:03 And God bless our country, America.
00:28:07 Amen.
00:28:10 Well, there's no need for this. No need.
00:28:20 Folks, this is a very sorry way to meet somebody. I know that.
00:28:23 But this here's Mr. Koslow. He's with the government.
00:28:25 This may not seem right to you, but there's a war on.
00:28:28 Folks, I got a list here.
00:28:32 It's got some things on it we're supposed to pick up.
00:28:35 That is, if you folks have any of this.
00:28:38 If you don't mind, I'm gonna look around a little bit.
00:28:44 Sheriff, will you come in here a minute?
00:28:49 What about this?
00:28:53 Oh, that's under 8 inches, isn't it?
00:28:56 Well, yeah.
00:28:59 It's a little short, but it's got a little bit of room.
00:29:02 It's got a little bit of room, too.
00:29:05 It's got a little bit of room, too.
00:29:08 Well, I can't say that it's a little bit short, but it's got a little bit of room.
00:29:12 It's got a little bit of room, too.
00:29:15 It's got a little bit of room, too.
00:29:18 Oh, that's under 8 inches, isn't it?
00:29:21 Well, yeah.
00:29:23 Well, it says right here it's okay, then.
00:29:27 Boss' code book.
00:29:38 He was the boy Scott. That's his handbook.
00:29:41 It's on the list, isn't it?
00:29:43 It's on the list.
00:29:44 Well, all right, then.
00:29:46 Oh, boy.
00:29:49 Oh!
00:29:57 Oh, my...
00:29:59 I'm sorry, folks.
00:30:01 Golly.
00:30:04 We don't expect any type of light movement from this farm.
00:30:09 So do all the things you need vision for in the daylight.
00:30:15 Hey, can they speak English?
00:30:17 Of course they can speak English, now. Is that what you want?
00:30:20 Good. Then they understand.
00:30:23 Well, is that it?
00:30:24 Yeah, that's it.
00:30:25 Okay, then let's get going.
00:30:28 You folks be careful now.
00:30:41 Thanks.
00:30:44 Hey, Sheriff.
00:30:54 Look at this clothesline.
00:30:56 Good thing I noticed.
00:30:58 This could be used as a shortwave antenna.
00:31:01 Oh, they found the right man for the job. That's for sure.
00:31:10 David!
00:31:11 Yo, David!
00:31:14 Oh, where you off to?
00:31:22 David, son, you can't go anyplace.
00:31:26 What?
00:31:27 Not this time of night.
00:31:29 Japanese can't be out after 6 o'clock. That's a brand-new law.
00:31:34 What?
00:31:36 David...
00:31:38 Son, anybody that breaks the curfew has to go to jail.
00:31:43 I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.

00:32:27 David.
00:32:50 Eileen.
00:32:54 I guess Pearl Harbor lets them spell that out on paper.
00:32:59 I've been so worried about you.
00:33:03 So many things have happened.
00:33:05 You haven't been in school for two days.
00:33:07 What for?
00:33:09 David, we have to talk.
00:33:11 I know.
00:33:14 What are we going to do?
00:33:16 Not about the war or this town.
00:33:19 About us.
00:33:20 David, I'm your wife.
00:33:23 My truck's behind the 5 and 10. Meet me there.
00:33:31 [Chuckles]
00:33:33 If things don't work out, I can always get a shave.
00:33:36 [Music]
00:33:39 Pam, they don't want me to go out at night.
00:33:43 We're not allowed to go out.
00:33:45 I know.
00:33:47 How is it with your mom and dad?
00:33:50 Same. Worse, actually.
00:33:53 I know I told you they might let us stay with them, but now that's off.
00:33:56 The way Dad's been treated, he wouldn't trust anybody. Not even you.
00:33:59 I don't blame him.
00:34:01 My folks are worse than ever. They're just terrible.
00:34:04 Why should they be different from the rest of us?
00:34:07 Oh, David, what are we going to do?
00:34:10 I don't know.
00:34:15 All I can say is that I love you. You're my wife.
00:34:19 You're not sorry for that?
00:34:22 I never will be.
00:34:24 Me neither, David. Me neither. No matter what.
00:34:29 These Japs are a depraved breed who can't be dealt with like mischievous boys at a Sunday school picnic.
00:34:42 We should wake up to the fact that protection of Americans is more important than what happens to the Jap brutes.
00:34:48 They live like rats, breed like rats, and act like rats.
00:34:53 One more thing.
00:34:55 You can't make an American out of a little Jap junior by handing him an American birth certificate.
00:35:00 A Jap...
00:35:02 What was that for?
00:35:04 I can't hear it anymore. I can't read it anymore.
00:35:07 What is it, Angel? What's the matter?
00:35:10 Nothing. No logic.
00:35:13 Logic?
00:35:15 Well, you don't want them living near the military bases, now do you?
00:35:19 They lived there before military bases.
00:35:22 And they bought land under the power line.
00:35:25 Because no white farmer would buy that land.
00:35:28 For just chance that they all live near the coast.
00:35:31 Most of us who live in California live near the coast.
00:35:35 Look, I don't want to discuss it with you, Eileen. You're too young to understand.
00:35:39 I've never seen you so hateful.
00:35:41 So violent, so terrible.
00:35:43 Well, there's certainly no need for you to get so upset about this.
00:35:46 Daddy, they're people just like us.
00:35:48 No. No, no, no, sweetheart. They are nothing like us.
00:35:52 That's just the point. They're nothing like us at all.
00:35:56 Can't I even talk to you about this?
00:36:01 Eileen, will you listen?
00:36:03 Oh, wait a minute.
00:36:05 You're wrong, young lady. Absolutely wrong.
00:36:07 These people are dangerous. They are the enemy.
00:36:09 And you don't give hearts and flowers and love and kisses to people who would kill you without batting an eye.
00:36:17 Daddy, try to understand. Please try.
00:36:23 There's only one thing that I understand, and that is that no stinking Jack is worth busting us apart.
00:36:31 [Music]
00:36:57 About a hundred, you say?
00:37:01 Well, at least you and your mom are still alive.
00:37:07 Shakes a man's soul.
00:37:11 Can't seem to help no one.
00:37:13 Up around Santa Cruz, there's an asparagus field that got tromped on, chopped up, wiped out.
00:37:20 And that sheriff up there says, "Gotta, gotta be at least 50 people to do that kind of damage in one night."
00:37:28 Down at Brawley, shots get thrown into some homes.
00:37:34 That's crazy. Oh, that's crazy. That's just crazy.
00:37:40 Well, bite the bullet, son.
00:37:44 My old daddy used to say, "Hammers break glass and make steel."
00:37:52 [Music]
00:37:58 Let's get 'em!
00:38:00 Hey! Get 'em out of here!
00:38:04 Get 'em out of here!
00:38:06 Order your ass where I tell you to get out of the country!
00:38:08 You ever heard of Jack Bond's boys?
00:38:12 You better yell up, Sally.
00:38:15 Jack Bond's boy was on a ship, he sank at Pearl Harbor.
00:38:19 He's still there. You still hear that?
00:38:22 Remember Pearl Harbor!
00:38:27 No! Get 'em out of here!
00:38:29 Bunch 'em up! Drive 'em out!
00:38:32 Get out of town, guys!
00:38:38 Jack Bond's paying for this!

00:39:00 [Engine rumbling]
00:39:10 I guess we'll be all right. That's pretty bruised up.
00:39:13 At least we got a house. Today.
00:39:16 With my father.
00:39:19 David was my father, one of them. Please.
00:39:23 Yes, but he wasn't a leader. He... he wasn't a leader.
00:39:31 [Music]
00:39:59 Hey, Har!
00:40:01 Hey, Har. You're not gonna believe what I just saw.
00:40:04 What?
00:40:05 Your sister with, uh... I don't know, Japanese David.
00:40:10 Where?
00:40:11 In the wash.
00:40:14 Right over there.
00:40:24 I never realized how anyone could be put through such agony.
00:40:27 Don't worry. My folks can take it.
00:40:30 Oh, I'm sure they can. I just don't know about me.
00:40:34 I know, honey.
00:40:36 No, you don't.
00:40:38 I'm a married woman. I want to feel like one.
00:40:42 I want to be with you. Sleep with you. Feel you holding me.
00:40:47 It'll be all right. God knows this can't last forever.
00:40:51 I know.
00:40:54 But neither can we, David.
00:41:05 I don't see him anywhere.
00:41:07 Don't believe me.
00:41:10 Yeah, well, they could have gone through the fields back to town. Let's go.
00:41:28 Hey, you seen a Jap named Taya Nekka?
00:41:32 Oh, wife of cow. Wife of cow. Englishy.
00:41:35 [speaking Japanese]
00:41:40 You see a Jap? A Jap about this high? See Jap?
00:41:48 All right, all right.
00:42:04 Bye, nobody.
00:42:06 Goodbye, Jap.
00:42:23 Hey, where's your cousin?
00:42:25 What?
00:42:27 You don't want to end up like them poor willets. You better speak up.
00:42:29 I got my own troubles.
00:42:31 I hear he was messing around with my sister.
00:42:33 What's the matter? Afraid you're going to have Japanese relatives?
00:42:37 I drowned them first.
00:42:39 You better get a big sack first. You Okies have big litters.
00:42:45 I'll shove your yellow teeth to the bottom of your yellow belly. Come on, get me, Okie.
00:42:52 You know Kendo, Okie?
00:42:55 Jap! You don't swing from the side, you come over the top.
00:43:05 Learned a lot? Secret Jap army.
00:43:17 That's it, don't!
00:43:18 That's all right, Dave. The Oklahoma kids are going to show the Japs their place.
00:43:21 God, stop it! You're next, Jap.
00:43:26 Get on!
00:43:27 I have to tell you something, both of you.
00:43:49 Holy God! Holy God! Holy God!
00:43:54 Hey, Tiger. Let's slaughter him.
00:43:57 Come on!
00:44:10 Wait! Wait! Wait!
00:44:13 I can't go.
00:44:15 I killed a guy.
00:44:17 I talked to somebody.
00:44:19 I didn't get caught swiping watermelons. I killed a guy.
00:44:34 Yeah, yeah, I got to see the sheriff.
00:44:37 You guys go to the depot. Get down.
00:44:42 Stop it! You got enough proof? Stop it!
00:44:47 If you'd have stayed away from my sister, this never would have happened.
00:44:52 You hear me?
00:44:54 It's your fault! It's your fault!
00:45:23 Oh!
00:45:33 I'm sorry.
00:46:02 What is it, Miss Graver?
00:46:06 Something... something terrible has happened to your brother.
00:46:12 Harlan?
00:46:14 There was a fight. It's an accident. A terrible accident.
00:46:19 Well, where is he?
00:46:22 I mean... Harlan's dead.
00:46:30 David...
00:46:57 David, your wife's here.
00:47:01 Thank you, Father.
00:47:15 What can I say?
00:47:17 I know.
00:47:19 It was an accident.
00:47:22 It was an accident, Eileen.
00:47:25 If you can live with it...
00:47:28 Now I must give myself up.
00:47:39 Mr. Tayanika?
00:47:42 You're under arrest.
00:47:44 You're to come with me.
00:47:46 Come on.
00:47:48 Where are we going, please?
00:47:49 Come on. Let's go. Get in the truck.
00:47:57 Here. Here you go.
00:48:00 Put on this tag.
00:48:02 You put it in a buttonhole.
00:48:09 File B-286-117.
00:48:13 You're being moved into a world of red tape regulations and long lines.
00:48:17 Huh?
00:48:21 I'm sorry, sir. You...
00:48:23 Get on the truck, will you?
00:48:36 Okay, let's go.
00:49:05 Good morning, Frank.
00:49:10 Sheriff, you're up at night and bright and early.
00:49:12 Oh, another round up, Frank.
00:49:14 I figured we'd try to get it done before everybody was moving around.
00:49:17 I wanted to do it this time.
00:49:19 Seems like they gave some money to an outfit called the Black Dragon Society.
00:49:24 I guess it's not a society a fellow wants to be in anyway mixed up with.
00:49:47 I think you better set up a guard.
00:49:49 Yes, sir.
00:49:54 Sheriff, would you like to check your list against mine, sir?
00:49:57 Oh, all right, Lieutenant. Let's see what we have.
00:50:00 Mr. Sheriff, you listen.
00:50:04 My son vote for you.
00:50:06 I give money for fight Russia.
00:50:09 Russia, not United States America.
00:50:12 We loyal.
00:50:14 We all loyal to America.
00:50:19 God bless America, land that I love.
00:50:26 Stand beside her and guide her.
00:50:31 Through the night with the light of love.
00:50:35 From the mountains to the prairies, to the ocean.
00:50:42 I will go, God bless America.
00:50:48 Shut up!
00:50:50 Shut up!
00:50:51 Hold on, Frank. Hold on.
00:50:54 But my son was murdered.
00:50:58 And his killer's in there, Jack.
00:51:00 You tell me not to start anything.
00:51:05 Oh, I'm sorry, ma'am. I'm sorry. I can't let you see nobody.
00:51:08 Husband! Husband!
00:51:09 No, ma'am, I'm sorry. I've got my order.
00:51:11 Crow! Crow!
00:51:12 Please, I have my order.
00:51:13 Please, Senator.
00:51:14 Crow! Crow!
00:51:16 Would you open that, please?
00:51:21 Crow, husband.
00:51:22 Yes, I understand.
00:51:29 We can't be completely inhuman, Crow.
00:51:37 [speaking in foreign language]
00:51:42 English! English!
00:51:48 Many of these men not say goodbye to families.
00:51:52 You say goodbye.
00:51:53 Hi.
00:51:54 [speaking in foreign language]
00:51:56 Hi.
00:51:58 [speaking in foreign language]
00:51:59 My heart goes with him.
00:52:05 [speaking in foreign language]
00:52:19 It looks to me like you have the whole lot.
00:52:45 [dog barking]
00:53:05 I have studied the facts and re-studied the transcribed testimony.
00:53:10 This tragedy is clearly accidental in self-defense and to all involved, I am sure, heart-breaking.
00:53:20 Those close to the deceased will not find revenge in my decision.
00:53:25 They must take solace in the unfortunate truth and seek whatever forgiveness can be found in their hearts.
00:53:36 This court finds the defendant, David Tayanaka, not guilty.
00:53:50 Adjourned.
00:54:00 David, I hate like the devil to rub this in, but I strongly feel it will be best for you to get out of this neck of the woods.
00:54:12 I know all the words, David.
00:54:15 Jigaboo, slant-eyed, big, dago, polak.
00:54:22 I have never yet been able to figure out who's better than who, so I am not against you people.
00:54:30 Sure, all my life I've been an American.
00:54:32 I don't want to become a you people.
00:54:34 Young fella, you are what people think you are today.
00:54:42 Now, I don't know who it is, but there's somebody in this town that's going to take it into his head that he'll be helping the war effort by killing you.
00:54:50 Could be an Holland's old man or want to take a little crack at your hide.
00:54:54 Point is, I just don't have enough help to watch out for you.
00:54:58 I hate like the devil to stick you back in the hoose, Carl, just to protect you.
00:55:03 American customs is just to lock up the man who commits a violence, not the victim.
00:55:07 David, boy, please don't jostle me.
00:55:13 What do you think is going to happen to us, Sheriff?
00:55:15 I don't know, David.
00:55:18 I don't know. I only know there ain't one politician that's sticking up for you folks.
00:55:24 Seems like your cause is not so dandy this election year.
00:55:28 What I understand is the Japanese would pick up and go inside the state, why they wouldn't have to move anymore, but here, right here, sitting beside the ocean line.
00:55:38 Looks like so long day is going to be sooner than later, and you've got to get going right now, boy, I mean sooner than sooner.
00:55:46 How about Bakersfield? Do you know anybody around there?
00:55:51 Yeah, my father.
00:56:13 Come in, David, come in.
00:56:21 You shouldn't be out after curfew. It's dangerous.
00:56:24 I know, but I know.
00:56:28 I understand.
00:56:32 I've been so lonely lately. Why don't I call Eileen, ask her to spend the night with me, you know, keep me company.
00:56:40 Miss Kramer.
00:56:43 Miss Kramer.
00:57:11 It's so empty.
00:57:20 Eileen.
00:57:34 It's your father.
00:57:37 David, let's tell him.
00:57:43 I'm no longer a Japanese married to his daughter.
00:57:46 I'm the killer.
00:57:54 What's the matter, daddy?
00:57:56 Keep your voice down, Angel. I don't want to wake Miss Kramer.
00:58:00 Okay.
00:58:04 David, please.
00:58:07 Angel.
00:58:08 Eileen.
00:58:13 Daddy, I have to talk to you. It's very important.
00:58:15 We've got to hurry, honey.
00:58:17 Look, tell me on the way down to the depot. I want you to drop me. Mother needs the car today.
00:58:22 Daddy, I...
00:58:23 Will you hurry up, Angel, please? I've got to meet the 620.
00:58:33 Oh, honey, we've never been so close.
00:58:38 Eileen, two things you learn from the Japanese.
00:58:46 Self-discipline.
00:58:50 And patience.
00:58:53 We haven't talked about anything.
00:58:56 And we've talked about everything.
00:59:01 Look.
00:59:04 Mom's really worried about how dad is.
00:59:06 She thinks he needs more medicine.
00:59:08 I'll try to see him. Some way, somehow.
00:59:12 And stop by Bakersfield to see about a job.
00:59:15 Maybe going there is our answer.
00:59:19 I'll be back.
00:59:21 In two days.
00:59:23 Two weeks.
00:59:26 I'll be back.
00:59:31 Oh, it was a beautiful night.

01:00:23 It should not be here.
01:00:26 I thought you'd do, Dad.
01:00:29 Anything else you need?
01:00:38 No.
01:00:39 Nothing.
01:00:42 Mom be happy.
01:00:44 You look fine.
01:00:47 You too. You look fine.
01:00:50 Is it true there's some Japanese Americans in here?
01:00:57 Hmm.
01:00:59 They keep saying, "I am America. I am America."
01:01:05 I say, "You America?"
01:01:08 Huh?
01:01:10 She walk out case.
01:01:12 Hmm.
01:01:13 Soon they'll walk on ocean.
01:01:17 That day for all of us.

01:02:49 To all those who are Japanese, or of Japanese ancestry.
01:02:55 My life, my home, my Hachiro and me.
01:03:01 We make it since years back.
01:03:05 First my man.
01:03:10 Who will tell us next what?
01:03:14 I... I so afraid.
01:03:18 Are you serious?
01:03:25 Daddy, Hitler is doing exactly the same thing to the Jews.
01:03:29 Now wait a minute. Many of these Japs want to go to those camps to prove their loyalty.
01:03:34 Now that makes sense to me.
01:03:37 You know, you're wrong, daughter. You're wrong.
01:03:40 A Jap is a Jap and don't forget it.
01:03:43 As a matter of fact, I was just reading in the paper here.
01:03:46 General... Yes, here it is. General DeWitt.
01:03:49 General DeWitt. Now he knows a little bit more about this than you or I.
01:03:52 And he says that the Japanese race is an enemy race.
01:03:57 Many second and third generation Japanese born on this soil...
01:04:02 ...possess U.S. citizenship. But, and get this...
01:04:06 ...the racial strains are undiluted.
01:04:11 That's very interesting.
01:04:14 It's interesting and by God it's the truth.
01:04:18 Suppose the strains were diluted. Would that make a difference?
01:04:25 I mean, for instance...
01:04:28 What if Harlan had married a Japanese-American girl?
01:04:31 No, not Japanese. A Jap.
01:04:34 There's no other way to say it. A Jap.
01:04:37 All right. A Jap.
01:04:40 What would it do?
01:04:42 Well, it'd kill your mother.
01:04:44 Kill me.
01:04:45 And you don't know it now, but it would kill you too.
01:04:48 Let's not even talk about the children that might come out of such a marriage.
01:04:52 It'd be a living hell.
01:04:54 And as far as Harlan's concerned, he's better off where he is right now.
01:04:57 Dead.
01:05:00 And married to a Jap.

01:07:05 You what?
01:07:07 It's best, I believe.
01:07:09 It is not the best.
01:07:11 I agreed to drive you to Bakersfield to help find David.
01:07:14 I did not agree to be an accomplice to a crazy fake drowning.
01:07:18 I tried to tell Miss Kramer what I was doing, but she wasn't home.
01:07:22 Eileen, you simply can't do this.
01:07:25 I don't want to.
01:07:27 But it's the only way.
01:07:28 My father would rather see me dead than married to David.
01:07:31 After they've lived with my death,
01:07:33 they'll be so happy to see me alive that they'll accept my marriage.
01:07:36 Even accept my living in a relocation camp with my husband.
01:07:40 The scheme of yours is absolutely insane.
01:07:44 As soon as we get to Bakersfield, I'm going to tell David everything you said.
01:07:48 And we're going to get this whole business straightened out.

01:08:01 If we can get to the Midwest before I get my evacuation notice,
01:08:20 no one can touch us. We'll start a new life.
01:08:23 That impression from the government over her parents or my relatives.
01:08:27 Miss Kramer, what is it?
01:08:28 David, you haven't heard.
01:08:31 No, of course you haven't.
01:08:34 This morning, Eileen committed...
01:08:40 Eileen!
