Indiana QB Tayven Jackson Recaps Louisville Game, Looks Forward to Akron
Transcript
00:00 >> No, I'm proud of myself.
00:04 I feel like I did a good job of getting the ball to our playmakers.
00:07 They did a phenomenal job of making plays.
00:10 >> Was it just a comfort level too on Saturday?
00:12 You don't have to worry about putting on your shoulders your team and
00:16 just going out there and playing?
00:18 >> Yeah, almost for me it was just going out there, playing free and playing loose.
00:21 I have a job to do, trying to win football games.
00:26 And obviously I'm gonna harp on myself cuz we need to get that done.
00:30 I think the more and more I get in games, I'm gonna feel more comfortable.
00:35 >> When you watch Coach Bell and just kind of the rhythm the two of you got into it,
00:40 in play calling, how do you maybe grade out your first week together as a full
00:45 time starter and where do you think you can go kind of as a coordinator,
00:49 quarterback?
00:49 >> Yeah, I have full trust in Coach Bell.
00:52 I think he has full trust in me.
00:55 I think our offense is gonna elevate from here.
00:58 It's more of just being comfortable and earning his trust.
01:02 And just throughout the season, that's all I'm trying to do is earn his trust.
01:06 And he's gonna open up the playbook a little bit more and
01:10 we're gonna get this offense going.
01:12 >> In that vein, I think nine receivers targeted, eight having just one catch.
01:17 Just how much do you feel like the offense can do to get it on the ball?
01:20 >> Yeah, I just think we have the number one receiver in the country.
01:25 And they're amazing backs.
01:27 And it's my job to put the ball in their hands and
01:29 they're gonna do what they do every day in practice.
01:31 And they're gonna make plays.
01:33 And it's just, again, our offense is gonna take off.
01:38 >> Coach Allen's been impressed with your pocket awareness and
01:41 just moving around.
01:42 Is that something you can practice or is that kind of instinct?
01:44 >> I think it's just from me playing basketball and a bunch of sports in my past.
01:49 I couldn't tell you why, I just kind of feel like I come in and
01:53 you just move to the open spot.
01:56 But I think it's from basketball and just having awareness.
02:00 >> Coach Allen said he was impressed with the way you were making your reads.
02:04 Does that come from just having spent so
02:07 much time on the playbook during the offseason and knowing the offense?
02:09 Does it come from the game, film study?
02:12 What is it that you get that confidence from?
02:15 Do you always do that stuff?
02:15 >> I think that comes from just being in the film with Coach Bell and
02:21 Brendan and just learning the plays and going through your reads.
02:25 And he harps on ABC reads, one, two, three, one, two, check down and get out.
02:31 And that's all we, our offense is pretty, it's not simple, but
02:36 it's simple on reads and you just make the right reads and go from there.
02:41 >> I know there's a willingness for you to stand in the pocket and
02:43 take a shot to get a throw off.
02:45 Is there anything that goes through your head as you're getting ready to throw and
02:47 you see the guy open, but you're throwing, you're like, okay, this is gonna hurt.
02:51 Is there anything like that?
02:52 >> I think just me being a competitor, I'm just trying to complete that ball.
02:57 And if I have to take a hit, I gotta take a hit, but
03:00 I just try to complete the ball down the field.
03:02 >> You talked about it kind of in the preseason,
03:06 trying to be a little bit more of everything offensively.
03:09 But is that maybe some of what Jalen can be in terms of,
03:13 obviously has some carries, but getting really involved in the pass game,
03:17 catching the ball in a variety of different routes,
03:18 just being maybe kind of all over the field and getting the ball?
03:21 >> Yeah, I think getting the ball to Jalou makes our offense go.
03:27 So we're gonna do everything we possibly can to get the ball in his hands,
03:31 cuz he's a playmaker, and he's gonna do what Jalou does.
03:34 He's gonna score touchdowns and be explosive.
03:37 So I think we do scheme a lot of things around Jalou, and
03:41 we have to, because he's our best player on offense.
03:45 >> Was there one play, when you reviewed the film,
03:47 was there one play you were particularly proud of that you thought you did
03:49 really well, and was there one play that stood out that you'd want back?
03:54 >> Definitely one, I should have gotten an end zone.
03:56 I still think about that, and I probably won't ever stop thinking about that.
04:01 But it's my job to get an end zone, and
04:04 we wouldn't be in the situation that we're in if I got it, so.
04:08 >> But one play you did well, were you proud of?
04:10 >> I don't like to give praise unless my teammates have done a lot of great things.
04:20 >> Your tight ends too, I think it felt like a game where we saw more touches for
04:25 them, Bradley had a couple big catches, James had one as well.
04:29 Just, I mean, how much can that group maybe kind of grow into the passing side
04:33 of the offense?
04:34 >> I think we have great tight ends and versatile tight ends too.
04:38 I think they can do a lot of things.
04:41 Again, I just gotta get the ball in their hands and I gotta make plays and
04:45 be able to get the ball in their hands.
04:47 Just cuz when we do, you can obviously tell they get the job done and
04:51 they can go out there and have four or five catches each for 100 yards.
04:56 >> I think you said Saturday that once the offense starts playing fast and
05:01 playing for you, you really find comfort in the offense.
05:04 Do you feel that in the first half you guys were playing as fast as you wanted to?
05:08 >> I just think it was, we were trying to see what the defense was giving us.
05:13 We were taking what the defense was giving us.
05:15 But again, in the second half we were down a lot of touchdowns and
05:21 we had to take shots.
05:24 And I think what we can take from that is maybe we can start playing like we're
05:30 down cuz we have the guys to do it.
05:33 We just, again, just need to get the ball and
05:38 all I see is they're gonna go get it done.
05:43 >> Coach Allen talked about it.
05:44 He didn't feel like the offense kinda couldn't get started in the first half.
05:47 There were a couple, three good drives there,
05:49 just kinda couldn't finish them in key situations.
05:51 Obviously, the second half, you kinda break through a lot of those barriers.
05:54 Do you see, were there differences you could see on film between maybe
05:58 execution or adjustments or whatever it was in those first half drives versus
06:02 the second?
06:03 >> Yeah, I think as a quarterback, our offense and
06:08 me, we came out a little flat in the first half.
06:10 I feel like we were playing a little conservative as players.
06:16 And we just need to go and get after it.
06:19 And when we were down, it was almost like, okay, now we gotta go.
06:24 But I feel like if we can do that in the first half, as an offense,
06:29 I don't think we would be in that situation.
06:31 But in the first half, we came out flat and I made some bad reads.
06:37 And I messed up on a motion.
06:40 And so those are key things that we can't have.
06:42 And I feel like if we didn't have those things and
06:45 I didn't put the team in that situation, we would have some points on the board.
06:50 >> Coming out in the second half and knowing you guys are doing the onside kick
06:53 and coming out and starting the half that way,
06:56 just how much did that kinda really get you guys going offensively?
06:58 >> Yeah, I didn't know we were going for the onside kick.
07:01 So when we got the onside kick, you kinda saw some guys,
07:05 chins, they went up a little bit.
07:07 And then we got the mojo going and we scored off that drive.
07:11 And I think that's a huge risk and
07:15 just a phenomenal call by Coach Allen and Coach T.
07:19 >> Free snap operation, had some problems that are called back to back talk.
07:24 You said they saved you on that.
07:26 How do you kinda fix those issues?
07:28 Is that something you guys working on practice a little bit?
07:31 Or how do you kinda get past some of those things?
07:33 The call comes in late or adjustments, how do you kinda work through some of those?
07:36 >> Yeah, I have to be better than that.
07:38 I gotta see the shot clock.
07:40 And if we don't have any time, forget about the motion, we gotta get the ball up.
07:45 Cuz we can't waste time outs.
07:46 And that was on me, and I'll take full responsibility for that.
07:49 >> So it's just being aware more of the- >> Yeah,
07:51 just aware of the shot clock and going fast.
07:55 >> How important was scoring early on that drive where you guys got the ball back
07:59 off the outside kick?
08:00 >> Yeah, I think it was a very good momentum changer.
08:04 We scored, the defense, okay, we got a shot now.
08:08 And they're gonna go out there and do what they do.
08:10 And they did, they shut them out.
08:12 And it was our job to put points on the board.
08:14 They did their job.
08:16 And we came up a little short, so that's on us.
08:19 >> Did you see anything change in Movable's defense from that moment?
08:23 >> They're playing more open coverage.
08:26 I think that I don't think they wanna play man,
08:29 cuz we have some elite guys on the outside.
08:32 And having a man on J-lube out of the backfield is kind of a risk that they
08:38 had to take.
08:38 So I think they were playing a little bit of zone.
08:40 And we took advantage of that.
08:42 And Coach Bell did a phenomenal job of understanding that and
08:44 putting us in a position where we could succeed.
08:47 >> It seemed like they were allowing a lot of contact,
08:49 the officials with your receivers.
08:50 How does that impact you?
08:52 And did you get a sense of that?
08:53 >> Yeah, I mean, I feel like there was a lot of flags that should have been called.
08:57 But we can't control that.
08:59 We gotta do the best we can do.
09:02 We can be on the field.
09:04 If they don't call the flag, we still gotta execute the play.
09:07 >> But does it impact you?
09:08 If you sense that that's the way they're calling the game,
09:11 impact you as a quarterback at all?
09:13 >> No, it doesn't.
09:14 It really doesn't.
09:17 >> Coach Allen has talked about working with you in terms of becoming a leader.
09:20 What has that process been like?
09:22 What's some of the advice he's given you?
09:23 >> I gotta take more time and spend it with my guys.
09:28 I'm taking my offensive line out to dinner because we're the only big ten team
09:34 for zero sacks.
09:35 I think that's a big, and I wasn't here last year.
09:38 And to talk of in the facility and everything, that's huge from last year.
09:43 So when guys do that, you gotta reward.
09:46 And so I think that comes with leadership.
09:49 I gotta build more relationships with my guys on the defense and
09:55 special team side, cuz I'm with the offense all the time.
09:59 I just gotta do a better job of leading this team and going out there and
10:03 putting this team in the best situation for us to win.
10:06 >> Do you put a play limit on them?
10:08 Do you know how much an offensive line can eat?
10:10 >> They can eat whatever they want.
10:11 >> [LAUGH] >> Where are you taking them?
10:14 >> They said they wanna go to Texas Roadhouse, but I don't know,
10:18 maybe Zagreb or something.
10:20 What is that?
10:21 That's the place that's called?
10:23 Bloomington, maybe Malibu, I don't know.
10:25 Whatever they wanna go, we're going.
10:27 >> Has that been a challenge for you, just being a transferring in?
10:30 You haven't played a ton of college football.
10:32 The leadership aspect, has that been challenging?
10:34 >> Yeah, when you come in as a young guy, you have some older guys and
10:38 older guys on the online, older guys in the receiving room, running back room.
10:41 So you gotta earn their trust, cuz you're a young guy coming in.
10:44 And they're not gonna trust you until you go out there and
10:50 you perform, you show toughness.
10:52 So that's what I'm trying to do.
10:53 Still, I'm trying to earn their trust so they can put full trust in me.
11:00 And I can go and do the things that I have to do on the field.
11:04 >> I see you pumping up the crowd in there in the last try of the game.
11:07 Carter was saying that he had no one to hold you back from running out in the field.
11:10 So you're really excited.
11:11 Is that, is bringing that energy part of being a leader?
11:14 >> Yeah, I feel like sometimes I wear my emotions on my sleeve a little bit.
11:18 But I'm an emotional player.
11:21 I wanna win really bad, and I hate losing.
11:24 So anything, if we can get the crowd going, if we can get the players going,
11:28 I'm gonna try my best to do that.
11:30 Just bring energy and bring momentum to the offense, and that's it.
11:35 [BLANK_AUDIO]
11:39 >> Thanks.
