00:00 With India and Canada in the middle of a diplomatic face-off over the killing of Khalistani separatist
00:06 Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday issued an advisory urging
00:11 Indian nationals and students in Canada to exercise utmost caution.
00:17 The advisory by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been issued in view of growing anti-India
00:24 activities and politically condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada.
00:29 Sharing the advisory on the social media platform, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson
00:33 Arindam Bakshi alerted Indian citizens and students to refrain from travelling to Ottawa
00:38 amid the fact that anti-India activities, hate crimes and criminal violence are on the
00:43 zenith.
00:44 The official emphasised how Indian diplomats and sections of the Indian community who oppose
00:49 the vested interests have suffered serious threats in Canada.
00:54 In view of growing anti-India activities and politically condoned hate crimes and criminal
00:58 violence in Canada, all Indian nationals there and those contemplating travel are urged to
01:05 exercise utmost caution.
01:06 Recently, threats have particularly targeted Indian diplomats and sections of the Indian
01:10 community who oppose the anti-India agenda.
01:14 Indian nationals are therefore advised to avoid travelling to regions and potential
01:18 venues in Canada that have seen such incidents, read the letter from the Ministry of External
01:23 Affairs.
01:24 Further, Bakshi said that the Indian High Commission or Consulates General will continue
01:29 to be in contact with the Canadian authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of the
01:32 Indian community in Canada.
01:34 Given the deteriorating security environment in Canada, Indian students in particular are
01:38 advised to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant, added the latest advisory.
01:43 Indian nationals and students from India in Canada must also register with the High Commission
01:47 of India in Ottawa or Consulates General of India in Toronto and Vancouver through their
01:52 respective websites or the Madad portal, which is madad.government.in.
01:57 Registration would enable the High Commission and the Consulate General to better connect
02:01 with Indian citizens in Canada in the event of any emergency or untoward incident, added
02:06 the letter.
02:09 This comes after Canada, alleging potential links between the Indian government and the
02:13 killing of the pro-Khalistan leader, expelled a top Indian diplomat.
02:17 India responded by ousting a senior Canadian diplomat in Delhi.
02:20 Earlier on Tuesday, the Canadian government had updated its travel advisory, asking its
02:25 citizens to exercise a high degree of caution while travelling to India due to the threat
02:30 of terrorist attack throughout the country.
02:33 In a move escalating tensions between the two countries, Canadian Prime Minister Justin
02:37 Trudeau had claimed that there was evidence to suggest India's involvement in the killing
02:41 of Khalistani separatist leader Hadeeb Singh Nijjar in June.
02:44 These claims were rejected as absurd and motivated by the Ministry of External Affairs, which
02:49 released a statement saying, "We have seen and rejected the statement of the Canadian
02:53 Prime Minister in their Parliament, as also the statement of their Foreign Minister."
