00:00 Luke Bryan reveals the song he wanted to be a hit.
00:02 Luke Bryan experienced an artistic pitfall early on
00:05 in his career when a song he believed in
00:07 didn't have the commercial success he hoped for.
00:10 Bryan proved to be a star right out of the gate
00:12 when his Tibet single, "All My Friends Say,"
00:14 was a top five hit on country radio in 2007.
00:18 But it was the followup single, "We Rode in Trucks,"
00:20 that he was hoping would achieve the same feat.
00:22 Bryan co-wrote the song with Roger Murrah
00:25 and Jim McCormick as a rural American anthem.
00:27 The lyrics referencing his native Georgia
00:29 and the simplicity of small town life.
00:31 "Down where I was born, it was heaven on earth/
00:34 "The Flint River washes that red Georgia dirt/
00:37 "The sun sets slow and the stars shine bright/
00:39 "Where I grew up/We rode in trucks,"
00:41 he sings in the final chorus.
00:43 "We Rode in Trucks" peaked at No. 33
00:45 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart,
00:48 while his next single, "Country Man," was a top 10 hit.
00:51 When "We Rode in Trucks" didn't make it,
00:53 it was probably the darkest artist headspace
00:55 I've ever been in because I thought,
00:57 "We Rode in Trucks" was going to propel my career
00:59 on a fast track, Bryan explained to American songwriter
01:02 and other media.
01:03 "It didn't go well for me and I was pretty upset about it."
01:06 During this time, Bryan had also turned in a batch of songs
01:09 to his label that they didn't deem single worthy
01:11 and was delivered a lot of bad news at once,
01:14 further plummeting him into frustration.
01:16 But that's when his positive mentality kicked in.
01:18 "At some point, I just told myself,
01:20 "Don't be that," Bryan asserted.
01:22 Despite the discouraging results of "We Rode in Trucks,"
01:25 Bryan's luck quickly turned around as he's now amassed.
01:28 Bryan has since made positivity and his fun-loving spirit
01:31 an integral part of his brand and music.
01:33 He says he's intentional about treating fans with respect
01:36 when they ask for a photo,
01:37 as he knows the interaction will leave a lasting impression.
01:40 "I try to be as real as I can with people
01:42 "because I always felt they'll spend the rest of their life
01:44 "spreading that experience and always smiling about it,"
01:46 he expressed.
01:47 "I think for the most part, I just love doing this.
01:50 "I didn't ask to be born to do it,
01:52 "but I think I was born to do it.
01:53 I think I was born to care for people.
