Fans have claimed Jacob Murphy is 'living the dream' after the Newcastle star was spotted beaming as the Champions League anthem played before their clash against AC Milan.

The winger was the surprise selection in Eddie Howe's starting XI as the Magpies made their return to Europe's elite competition after a 20-year absence.

Murphy appeared determined to enjoy the moment and was spotted smiling as the famous Champions League anthem played at San Siro before kick-off.

Fans were quick to praise the smiling 28-year-old as he prepared to make his Champions League debut.

I love how Jacob Murphy breaks into a smile when the Champions League music starts. Living the dream at Newcastle,' one fan wrote.

'We’re watching Jacob Murphy playing Champions League football, and he’s gassed about it. I love football,' another said.

'Jacob Murphy's face during the UCL anthem,' added a third.

Some fans commented on Murphy’s journey to the Champions League with Newcastle.

Murphy had joined the Magpies from Norwich in 2017, where he had spent time on loan with clubs in the Championship and League One.

He had also spent time away from Newcastle on loan with West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

'Baffles me the Jacob Murphy we saw at Coventry is playing Champs League but tell you what bloody good on him,' one fan said.

Another commented 'Still can't get over seeing Jacob Murphy in the Champions League'.

Murphy played the opening 62 minutes at the San Siro, with the winger then substituted for Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle is facing a challenging return to the Champions League having been drawn into a tough group alongside AC Milan, PSG, and Borussia Dortmund.

They held AC Milan to a 0-0 draw in San Siro as Nick Pope preserved their point with a string of fine saves.
