DOH records spike in leptospirosis cases in PH

00:00 The Department of Health or DOH has seen an increase in leptospirosis cases due to recent
00:05 typhoons and heavy rain.
00:07 An approximately 3,700 cases were reported from January to September 2nd, a 70 percent
00:15 rise from 2022.
00:17 In the previous three to four weeks, 733 incidents were recorded.
00:21 However, it rose to 32 percent from the previous two weeks.
00:26 Leptospirosis cases have increased in six regions, including NCR, Regions 1, 3, and
00:32 4A.
00:33 Of the overall leptospirosis cases, 410 have been fatal.
00:37 The DOH advises keeping a clean environment, wearing protective footwear in flooded regions,
00:43 and drinking clean water to prevent leptospirosis.
00:46 "The reported cases are not only due to the rain, but also because we are seeing a
00:58 return, our surveillance is getting stronger, not just due to COVID, but for all diseases.

01:06 And the occupation that is most affected are the laborers, fishers, drivers, and even those
01:15 in fishing related industry.
