Clade 9, a new variant of chickenpox, has been detected in India. The National Institute of Virology (NIV) has discovered the new variant, causing varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Scientists have detected Clade 9 for the first time in the country while carrying out a study of monkeypox.

00:00 Clade 9, a new variant of chicken pox has been detected in India.
00:08 The National Institute of Virology has discovered the new variant, causing varicella zoster
00:13 virus.
00:15 Scientists have detected clade 9 for the first time in the country while carrying out a study
00:20 of monkey pox.
00:22 Out of 331 suspected cases of monkey pox, 28 were found to be actually triggered by
00:30 VZV.
00:31 While other variants of this virus, including clade 1 and clade 5, have been previously
00:35 found in India, this represents the first time that clade 9 has been detected in the
00:40 country.
00:41 The said variant is more common in countries like Germany, UK and US.
00:46 The research on clade 9 was published on September 6 in the recent issue of the Annals of Medicine
00:52 Journal.
00:53 While the study focused on the genomic characterization of VZV, the researchers found this virus in
00:58 suspected monkey pox cases among children and adults.
01:03 So what is the clade 9 variant?
01:07 Clade 9 is a variant of varicella zoster virus, i.e. VZV, that causes chicken pox, a common
01:14 childhood illness.
01:15 The World Health Organization, WHO, claims that VZV is responsible for the highly contagious
01:21 chicken pox.
01:23 The Global Health Organization stated that VZV is a member of the herpes virus family.
01:29 The transmission of this virus reportedly occurs via droplets, aerosols or direct contact
01:34 with respiratory secretions.
01:36 WHO states that the virus causes mild disorder in children and tends to be more severe among
01:42 adults.
01:44 Chicken pox, also known as varicella, is characterized by an itchy rash, usually starting on the
01:49 scalp and face, and initially accompanied by fever and malaise.
01:54 Some of the symptoms of clade 9 include rash, fever, loss of appetite, headache, fatigue,
01:59 and an overall sense of ill health.
02:03 The chicken pox rash appears 2-3 weeks after exposure to the virus.
02:07 Prior to the appearance of rash, the patient develops fever, body ache, and headache.
02:12 The rash appears in the form of bumps, followed by small fluid-filled blisters called vesicles,
02:18 which eventually heal with the formation of scabs.
02:22 The fever settles 1-2 days after the appearance of rash.
02:25 The entire process happens over a period of 2 weeks and the person is infective to others
02:30 2 days prior to the onset of rash and the infectivity continues till scab formation.
02:36 So is clade 9 more severe than the previous variants?
02:39 According to experts, presently there is no difference in the severity of infections with
02:44 clade 9 as compared to the previous variants.
02:47 One of the most effective ways to prevent chicken pox is getting vaccinated.
02:51 One should also practice good hygiene and regular hand washing can also help.
