00:00 Austria`s government wants to convince more of its citizens to adopt public transport
00:05 as vehicle emissions remain persistently high.
00:08 So the Alpine Republic is pushing its new Klimaticket or climate ticket, an annual pass
00:13 for all public transport from city buses to high speed trains.
00:17 "Klimaticket is a wonderful solution. I often drive the route to Vienna and that is a big
00:24 time advantage because you arrive in a much shorter time."
00:29 It costs around 3 Euros per day, clearly a winner in terms of price, but is it enough
00:34 to entice people?
00:35 "We live in Lower Austria, so we use it for work, of course only by train, but we also
00:42 use it in Vienna for other means of transport like buses and roadways."
00:44 "For about two years now, Austria has had the Klimaticket. But after a initial boom,
00:49 the demand seems to be declining. Only about 3% of the population has this wide-ranging
00:56 ticket."
00:57 Christine decided not to buy the Klimaticket since she can only get to work by car. When
01:02 she needs to go by train, she continues to buy tickets individually.
01:05 "I can`t imagine that we as a family will ever give up on cars. I think that in the
01:12 rural areas, we will need cars for a longer period of time."
01:16 Even though Austrians are the most frequent rail travelers in the EU, some parts of the
01:21 country are still poorly connected, especially of course in the mountains.
01:25 And according to one mobility NGO, the Klimaticket is still a great success.
01:32 For some months, a similar Klimaticket has already been available in Germany, and now
01:53 it`s up to people to use them.
