00:00 These two tiny mummified bodies, images of which were shared around the world this week,
00:06 are now the subject of much controversy.
00:08 For Jaime Masson, a Mexican journalist and longtime UFO enthusiast, the alien-looking
00:14 forms are among the most important discoveries in the history of humankind.
00:18 But for many scientists, they are an already debunked, perhaps even criminal, stunt.
00:24 Masson gained instant international attention when he stood before Mexico's Congress just
00:28 days ago and presented the two figures.
00:31 He shared scientific analysis and study results he argues prove the bodies are about a thousand
00:36 years old and not related to any known earthly species.
00:40 Reuters gained exclusive access to his office to see them.
00:44 The bodies appear ancient and share characteristics with humans.
00:47 Masson claims they were found around 2017 in Peru.
00:51 "It is the most important thing that has happened to humanity because it's the opportunity
00:58 for us to evolve, for us to grow, for us to maybe initiate communication with other intelligences.
01:05 I think this phenomenon is the only one that gives us the opportunity to come together."
01:11 But the backlash from the scientific community came just as swiftly as Masson's newfound
01:15 fame, with scientists and archaeologists in Peru calling the bodies a farce.
01:20 Reuters correspondent Cassandra Garrison spoke to Masson about his research.
01:24 "He told me that the scientific analysis and data studies that he's been presenting
01:30 this entire week actually were done on a different body that remains in Peru.
01:36 And the two bodies that he presented here in Mexico, he's not done scientific analysis
01:40 on saying that he didn't want to damage the specimens.
01:44 And I think that could potentially change the conversation.
01:47 But we had scientists independently review the results who told us that they do not represent
01:53 anything out of the ordinary and certainly indicate normal life on Earth."
01:59 Masson is no stranger to controversy, having participated in a 2017 documentary that appeared
02:05 to feature doctored mummies.
02:07 As to how these two bodies arrived in Mexico from Peru, that's a question Masson says he
02:12 can't answer.
02:14 According to him, a man brought the remains to the country and Masson asked permission
02:18 to present them to Mexico's Congress.
02:20 But the move has angered Peruvian officials, who have filed a criminal complaint against
02:25 him.
02:26 Masson says he's done nothing illegal and welcomes the Peruvian government to investigate
02:30 the figures.
