Brighton and Hove Albion enjoyed a 3-1 Premier League victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford
Transcript
00:00 I'm joined by Sam Morton from Old Trafford. A great performance from Brighton, a 3-1 victory.
00:11 I imagine there's quite a few happy Brighton fans around at Old Trafford.
00:16 Absolutely. It was a brilliant day for Brighton, really. The fans were in fine voice all afternoon,
00:22 really. The goals only helped that. It was an end-to-end game, really, for much of the
00:28 first half. It could have gone either way. It was Brighton that opened the scoring through Danny
00:33 Wurlbeck against his former club again. He does love a goal against Man United. He doesn't hold
00:38 back in his celebrations, either. That was exactly what Brighton needed, really. Suddenly, Man United
00:45 were nervy and there were so many gaps for Brighton to exploit, really. They obviously did concede.
00:53 Brighton went hoisting and put the ball in the back of the net, but obviously had to reprieve
00:57 from VAR through Rashford, knocking the ball out of play. It was obviously very unfortunate from a
01:03 Man United perspective. But the opposite for Brighton. It was almost like a goal for them,
01:08 really. It gave them the opportunity to go and grab a second goal after the break. It was a
01:13 brilliant goal from Pascal Gros. He sent Martinez completely the wrong way. It was a lovely goal to
01:20 make it 2-0. It was just a perfect performance, really, from Brighton, who nullified most of the
01:26 threat that Man United posed. Rashford was obviously lively, but he didn't have his shooting
01:31 boots on at all today. So, yes, a fine win for Brighton and just more goals. I think goals are
01:37 a guarantee, almost, in outwards games this season. Top scorers in the league, 15 so far. So, yes,
01:42 it can't really have gone much better. I think apart from the West Ham game, it was the only
01:45 blip, really. Apart from that, it's almost been faultless. Yes, a very good performance again.
01:51 A few new players in the team. Lamptey was back in, wasn't he? Mo Dahoud, who started in the
01:56 central midfield as well. And also Simon Odinga as well. He started as well. I thought Lamptey
02:02 looked particularly good, didn't he, down in the full-back role? Yes. Lamptey was obviously playing
02:08 in an unfamiliar left-back position today, but he had a bit of a rocky start. He got an early booking
02:13 and he thought he might be walking on eggshells from then on, but it wasn't like that at all.
02:16 And really, Man United didn't put him under enough pressure as they maybe should have done, really,
02:20 when he was on a booking. And he really looked dangerous going forward every time he went
02:25 forward and he grabbed two assists in that second half. It was a nice little pass to Gross for 2-0
02:31 that kind of deceived the defenders. And then the third goal was a superb run down the left
02:37 and a perfect cross to João Pedro, who made no mistake with the finish. So, yes,
02:41 really good performance from Lamptey and so good to see him back.
02:43 Yes, almost like a new signing, isn't he, coming back in? And Mo Dahoud as well. He
02:49 looks a silky smooth player as well, doesn't he? He looks quite good in midfield.
02:54 Yes, absolutely. He just settles in so well, keeps things ticking over really nicely
02:58 and does the job really well. Nothing too spectacular, nothing extravagant, but just
03:05 does the basics really well and really helps Brighton to kind of control that midfield as
03:11 they did so well today. Yes, it's good to see. And the strength they
03:15 have now coming off the bench as well. So, they had João Pedro came on, he got his goal.
03:21 Ancel Fati came on for his debut as well and then Evan Ferguson as well. It's so strong,
03:25 isn't it? He made six changes initially and then they bring these players on off the bench as well.
03:31 It looks really promising. Yes, I actually asked that question to
03:35 the Serbian in the press conference just now. I asked about how much of a difference that
03:39 squad depth really makes this season. It's something they didn't have really last year.
03:44 And going into the European competition, the Europa League this season, having that
03:48 squad depth and so many players to bring on, it's incredible really.
03:51 You could really say today they played their B team and they still outclassed Man United on the
03:57 track and had these players to come off the bench. Ancel Fati so nearly scored. It was an absolutely
04:03 incredible pass from Billy Gilmore on the other side. He so nearly made it four. It was actually
04:10 a really good save from Mourinho. It would have been an incredible start for Fati but either way,
04:16 really a perfect day. It's just a shame they conceded that goal at the end there. It seemed
04:20 like they switched off after the third. They just can't seem to keep a clean sheet this season.
04:25 No, no.
04:26 No matter how many goals they score.
04:27 Yes, I bet that irritates the Serbian, doesn't it?
04:31 Yes, I suppose it must do really. I know it doesn't really matter in the scheme of things
04:38 but just as a perfectionist of the Serb he is, you would imagine that he would like to get a
04:45 clean sheet eventually but I'm sure it won't be too long because I think both against Newcastle
04:49 and Man United, it was just a lapse of concentration for that one moment after they've gone in the lead
04:57 by two or three goals and then they just kind of switch off, which is understandable. Obviously,
05:03 I think it's on a high and you kind of maybe understand a little switch off but obviously,
05:07 as the season goes on, you need to keep things tight in those moments.
05:10 Yes, yes. Brighton look like one of the best teams in the Premier League at the moment.
05:15 They can't win this, are they not? Are they title contenders?
05:19 I mean, I actually asked the Serbian as well if they were top four contenders and he was
05:25 like, he rang quite a horn on that. He didn't really say either. He didn't really say kind
05:27 of either way. Obviously, he keeps his cards close to his chest but if you're being really,
05:35 really giddy about it, you could say that. I think with Brighton are, as you say, one of the best
05:39 teams in the league at the moment, if not the best performing team at the moment. The squad depth
05:43 they have, you just never know. I think Man City haven't looked their free-flowing self so far.
05:48 They're scraping away wins but at some point, you expect them to really step on the pedal.
05:55 But yes, you never know. I think Brighton do look amazing at the moment.
05:58 Yes, yes. You touched on it earlier but just a quick word on the supporters.
06:03 Isn't it really? They've got the Europa League game on Thursday. They go into these big teams.
06:09 They beat Newcastle just before the international break. They've just gone to Old Trafford,
06:13 comfortably beat them 3-1. It's the best time ever to be a Brighton fan, isn't it, simply?
06:20 Oh yes, absolutely. It's incredible, really. The journey the club's been on from where they were
06:26 in League One now to flying high in the Premier League and putting teams to the sword. Just to
06:31 beat Man United at Old Trafford could seem an amazing achievement but it's something Brighton
06:35 have done many times before. They seem to be completely dominant over Man United in recent
06:40 seasons. Even in the Wembley FA Cup game when they were lost on penalties, they probably deserved to
06:45 win that one as well. So, it really is incredible the journey Brighton have been on, the season
06:51 they've had so far and may it continue, really. Yes. Just a quick word on Manchester United.
06:57 They've had a lot of off-field troubles, haven't they? What did you make of their team? There were
07:02 a few boos going around, weren't there, when Eric ten Haag substituted Hodgeland towards the end.
07:09 What were United like?
07:13 Yes. They started well. They looked like they were really trying to put things right after
07:21 a difficult week off the pitch that obviously followed the defeat against Arsenal. They really
07:25 needed a win today to boost confidence, boost morale. They looked like they really were going
07:31 for it in that first 15 minutes. They really came out of the blocks but that Welbeck goal completely
07:36 knocked the stuffing out of them, really. There were a few Brighton moments. Obviously, the
07:40 disallowed goal that Hoyland scored. He was one of the best players for United today. He looked
07:46 really sharp and held the ball up really well, as did Rashford. He just couldn't score today. He
07:52 left his shooting boots at home. It didn't fall into place for Man United at all. It just really
07:58 summed up where the club is at the moment. Nothing seems to be going right. Everything that could go
08:02 wrong does go wrong. Obviously, you had the VAR decision to go against them against Arsenal again
08:07 today. Things really just aren't going well. Obviously, on the substitute decision that
08:14 Tenhard made, he did, as you say, get a lot of boos for that one. He was asked about that in his
08:19 press conference. He explained that he's not 100% fit. He's not ready to play 90 minutes, Hoyland.
08:25 That's why he had to bring him off, which is understandable, I guess. He's bringing on a player
08:32 in Anthony Martial that has such a limited impact on games now. It's sad to see, really, with the
08:38 potential that he showed in the early days of his United career. He doesn't look like he's going to
08:44 reach those heights at all at this point. It's sad to see. I think with Hoyland, they have some hope,
08:51 but there's very little else in terms of an attack in the sense of United. Worrying times.
09:00 It's tough for United, but a great, great result for Brighton. You can follow all the coverage on
09:06 Sussex World, where we have all the player ratings and all the reactions from the United game. Also,
09:11 we'll be looking ahead to the AEK Athens match, which is at the Amex Stadium on Thursday.
09:17 Thanks for joining us, Dan, and have a safe trip back.
09:22 Cheers Darren!
