Auto Workers Launch Nationwide Strike as Contract Negotiations Collapse

Auto workers represented by the United Auto Workers have gone on strike after failing to reach a new contract agreement with major US car manufacturers Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis. The strikes, led by UAW president Shawn Fain, began at midnight at various auto plants nationwide. Around 12,700 workers in Michigan are on strike. The UAW has an $825 million strike fund to support its members for about three months. The union is demanding a 40% pay increase, an end to wage disparities, and the restoration of previous concessions. The Biden administration is considering providing emergency aid to smaller supply firms affected by the strike. Ford has criticized the union's wage demands, while General Motors and Stellantis have not commented.
