00:00 It's throwback Thursday.
00:07 When you keep memorabilia, you don't just collect items, but you also store valuable
00:12 memories.
00:13 Today, we talked to a man who keeps vintage Philippine transportation souvenirs and mementos,
00:19 and each has a particular personal meaning.
00:22 To tell us more about his collection, Cesar Kawagdan joins us live in the studio.
00:27 Good afternoon sir and welcome to Traffic Center.
00:30 Good afternoon ma'am.
00:31 Sir, so this is quite an interesting collection you have over here.
00:34 What's the story behind these items?
00:36 How did you get them?
00:39 Example for this jeepney ma'am.
00:41 I got it from a jeep terminal.
00:46 Then the owner said it was a gift.
00:50 Based on the owner, it was a gift from Mr. Leonardo Saraw, the owner of Saraw jeep.
00:55 Ah, I see, right.
00:56 He said it was a gift from him.
00:57 Then he displayed it at the terminal.
00:58 For our viewers, can you explain who Saraw is?
01:03 Leonardo Saraw, he's the owner of the Saraw jeepney.
01:07 Then Saraw is his surname.
01:09 Okay, so how old is this?
01:11 I think this is from the 80s.
01:13 Wow, okay.
01:14 So from all these items, do you have a favorite?
01:18 This jeepney, because I think we only have two of these here in the Philippines.
01:24 I only saw two.
01:26 So you sold two of them?
01:28 It's hard to find, I think.
01:30 And it's not for sale.
01:32 It's a gift or a souvenir from the Saraw family to their friends.
01:38 So this is from the 80s.
01:40 What's the oldest item here?
01:42 I have bus tickets.
01:49 Wow, okay.
01:50 This is the oldest, from the 1930s.
01:53 Okay, 1930s.
01:54 1930s.
01:55 So these are the bus tickets from the 1930s?
01:57 Yes, from the 1930s.
01:58 Wow, okay.
01:59 So it's very old.
02:00 Yes, pre-war, ma'am.
02:01 Pre-war, okay.
02:02 These are all bus tickets?
02:04 Bus tickets from different bus companies from the 60s, 70s, 80s.
02:09 Wow, how interesting.
02:11 How long have you been collecting Pinoy transportation memorabilia?
02:15 And why Pinoy transportation?
02:17 Actually, I'm a collector of Philippine vintage memorabilia.
02:21 Okay, why Philippine memorabilia?
02:24 Why did you decide to start this?
02:26 Because this is what we see in our day-to-day life that we forget about.
02:34 So I'm collecting some vintage toys from local vintage toys, from old products like shampoo bottles.
02:42 Oh wow.
02:43 With content.
02:44 How interesting.
02:45 Yeah.
02:46 How long have you been collecting?
02:48 Since 2013, 2012, 2013.
02:52 2013, so it's been almost 10 years.
02:55 Yes.
02:56 It's been 10 years.
02:57 The first memories I have that I've kept are from my mother giving me my dress when I was one year old.
03:05 It's still with me, and my socks.
03:08 So you've been interested for a long time.
03:10 Yeah, and I started collecting when I was interested in 2013, from vintage bikes and stuff like that.
03:18 Where do you usually find these items?
03:21 In old stores, junk shops.
03:24 Okay, so it's written in your magazine, if you take a look there, it says "Jeepney King of the Road."
03:31 Can we still say that jeepneys are the king of the road, especially with the jeepney phase-out program beginning?
03:38 I can still call it the king of the road.
03:42 From the Kalesa, the original king of the road, to jeepney.
03:47 I think if it were modernized from electric, I hope it would still keep its look.
03:56 The aesthetic of the jeepney.
03:58 Because when you say jeepney, you immediately think of the Philippines.
04:01 Like in Thailand, their tricycles, when you see them, you immediately think of Thailand.
04:06 So it's like it's a re-representation of the Philippines.
04:08 Indicative of our culture.
04:10 So you can still say that it's the king of the road.
04:12 Yeah, still king of the road.
04:14 Do you plan to share these items with the youth through an exhibit or museum?
04:19 Are you selling them?
04:21 Some of my doobles, I sell them to some collectors or people I know.
04:26 I give them to them, maybe I can have them.
04:30 Sometimes I don't sell them anymore, I just give them to them.
04:34 So there's a community of collectors?
04:36 Yes, there's a lot of them.
04:38 From Pinoy toys, from Pinoy...
04:42 Okay, I wish we could talk about this more and talk about the history of each of them,
04:47 but we're running out of time, so before we go, what message can you give to our collectors?
04:51 Tips to better keep them safe, because they're old.
04:55 I would say, keep your old toys, especially your toys from your childhood,
05:05 don't sell them, because they're the ones that made our childhood happy.
05:12 So is there a way to maintain them?
05:16 What is it?
05:18 Where should they be stored?
05:20 Just keep them in a place where they won't get wet.
05:25 Especially the papers, don't put them in plastic, because the pests...
05:33 Like this one, frame it.
05:35 Yes, frame it.
05:37 Okay, thank you Pinoy Transportation Memorabilia Collector Cesar Kawagdan.
