00:00 Good morning, let's do sports now on the AM show with me, Mufti Awonogbila Abda.
00:04 The Black Stars of Ghana were in action yesterday.
00:07 They came out against Liberia in an international friendly.
00:10 They were also friendly in Europe and the Paraguayans came to a conclusion.
00:15 But we start with some politics where Georges Friere is alleging that the Ghana Football
00:21 Association is putting impediment on its way as he files an appeal against the decision
00:27 of the Elections Committee to disqualify him.
00:30 We go on phone right now and speak to Dr Nyaho Nyaho Utamakolo, a board member of Accra House
00:37 of Hope.
00:38 Good morning, Doc.
00:39 Thanks very much for your time.
00:41 The last conversation you and I had, you said something quite profound and that was that
00:46 Georges Friere, in your opinion, was not qualified to contest for position of president of the
00:52 GFA now because you were very clear in that.
00:56 And the Elections Committee appeared to be toying your way by disqualifying Georges from
01:01 contesting the GFA elections.
01:04 What do you make of the decision of the Elections Committee?
01:08 I think firstly, when I say he wasn't qualified, I didn't mean he could not appeal.
01:18 He has every right to appeal.
01:21 I personally don't support anyone whose document does not fulfill the requirements of the statutes
01:29 of the Earth.
01:30 However, if the statutes allow for amendment of the document, I don't see why anyone would
01:42 be frustrated with handing over his phone.
01:46 So what happened yesterday really?
01:50 If it's really true, then that is very unfortunate.
01:53 I don't believe the FA has behaved well.
01:58 The FA is a democratic institution.
02:02 In such a practice, it does not augur well for the democratic institution they see themselves
02:09 to be.
02:10 That conduct, to me, was very shameful.
02:18 It loses the principles and the statutes of the FA are not being respected.
02:26 That is shameful and unfortunate.
02:31 Now let me make this final remark.
02:35 Elections must be conducted on an even playing field.
02:38 If that is not done, it ceases to be an election.
02:45 That's all that I will say.
02:48 But Doc, tell us, the statement that was released by George Efreier, he said first, when he
02:53 got to the GFA secretariat, security did not grant him access.
02:59 It took a phone call he had to make to someone who is close to him and also a former vice
03:06 chairman of the Ghana League class association to come before security granted him access.
03:11 And the receptionist also refused to take the appeal form.
03:15 So what advice would you offer to the FA, considering the fact that many people are
03:20 taking legal actions against the football governing body, which many say is derailing
03:24 the processes leading up to elections?
03:26 As I said earlier, he has every right to have an appeal here.
03:36 Now, if he was prevented at the gate from entry, that is very, very wrong.
03:44 And the FA, in particular the president, can easily be moved out just on that, if he is
03:52 aware.
03:53 And if he is not aware, I'm telling you, the democratic institutions that they are
03:58 enjoying there now, I brought a proposal.
04:03 And that led to my exit from the FAEA circle.
04:09 Because Kujo, what do you call it, the then minister, Kujo, I don't even know what's
04:16 his name.
04:17 Was it Kujo Bauredu?
04:18 Kujo Bauredu.
04:19 We had a discussion and I suggested to him that it might be better if we have officers
04:30 at the FAEA elected, including the executive officers.
04:34 So he charged me to prepare a memo, which I did.
04:38 And the memo got leaked.
04:42 And that annoyed the then executive council, or what they call themselves at that time.
04:48 Because a lot of the proposals I came out with, I forgot them.
04:54 And some of them, there was no way they can win a democratic election.
05:00 And then they planned to impeach me.
05:03 I went to court.
05:07 The court ruled the first case in my favor.
05:18 And then I was reliable informed by my lawyer that they have gone underground to see the
05:27 judge.
05:28 And I decided immediately to resign.
05:33 And I resigned, sent my letter to the ministry, and Madam Elizabeth Ohini was the one who
05:42 accepted my letter of resignation.
05:46 She did that on behalf of God.
05:49 So if finally, the document, I sent the document to FIFA myself.
05:58 Finally, FIFA agreed that they should be there, and that is what we are enjoying today.
06:04 They should not make a mistake at all in trying to prevent anybody.
06:09 The way they did, what I saw on the television yesterday, physically preventing a person
06:14 from entering, that is totally wrong.
06:18 If a FAEA has been found not to have got his documents in order, and he has put them right,
06:27 he should be allowed to hand them over.
06:30 Okay.
06:31 Doc, Doc, thanks very much for this message to the Ghana Football Association today.
06:37 We really appreciate your time.
06:40 Dr. Nyahonyoho Tamaklo is a board member of Accra House of Books, speaking to us on George
06:47 Freer's allegations that there are impediments on his way to filing his appeal.
06:53 That appeal was finally submitted though.
06:55 But now, let's move on and to do our stories.
06:58 On Tuesday, the Black Stars came up against the Lyon Stars of Liberia in an international
07:04 friendly.
07:05 Enes Niyoma and Mohamed Khodouz both scored before Jordan Ayoub wrapped up a 3-1 win as
07:11 Ghana secured a comfortable victory as they start preparations for the African Cup of
07:16 Nations 2023, following that qualification ticket which was secured after a comeback
07:22 win against Central Africa Republic.
07:24 My colleague Mubarak Haruna was there and comes to you with this report.
07:33 It was largely a second string side as Media Mass Sporting Club left back Hamid Fattah,
07:39 Turkish-based defender Kingsley Schindler and striker Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth
07:45 all handed starting spots.
07:48 Semenyo could have given Ghana the lead in the first half after raising clear of the
07:52 Liberian defence but could not find the back of the net.
08:04 Enes Niyoma grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and broke the deadlock inside
08:09 seven minutes into the second half.
08:20 Niyoma then turned provider as he set up Mohamed Khodouz to double Ghana's advantage.
08:34 Substitute Jordan Ayoub, who has now become Ghana's fourth most capped player with 92
08:40 appearances, put the icing on the cake before Devon Roosevelt got to the consolation for
08:46 the visitors.
08:47 It was a result head coach Chris Hughton was content with.
08:52 It's about what you can get out of them in two days, which is difficult.
08:59 You only have two days training before the first game.
09:03 But it's picking a side that you think can compete well, can get a result and in this
09:09 second game it was very much for us to try something different as regards the formation
09:15 that we played.
09:17 We played some players that are very much part of what we do that didn't play in the
09:22 first game.
09:23 And that's a hard balance because on top of that what you want to do is it's important
09:27 to win the game also.
09:29 Just for the feel of the group and of course going forward.
09:33 And of course for us to score, disappointing to concede the goal at the end, but to score
09:39 three goals and in a game where maybe we could have scored more, then I have to be happy
09:44 with that.
09:45 The team praised the Black Stars as part of their preparations for the 2026 World Cup
09:50 qualifiers.
09:51 Liberia head coach Ansoumane Aketa described the Ghana team as a work in progress.
09:56 If you look at Ghana for the past one year, you know a team that wants to work hard, we
10:05 have to respect them.
10:06 And two, Ghana has been a better side for a long time, like Liberia too.
10:12 We have our better side.
10:16 We have beaten Ghana before, Ghana have beaten us.
10:18 So it's on both sides.
10:21 But today's game, it does not mean that Ghana was over superior to us.
10:27 One, Ghana was playing at home.
10:29 That's one.
10:30 And two, the second half, we made some missteps.
10:34 Yes, Ghana has a good team, but they still need to work hard on that.
10:38 They have a good team, they still need to work hard, they have good players.
10:43 What I saw is that they play like people.
10:47 Yes, but when it was a different game, it could be different football today.
10:53 After five games as the head coach of the Black Stars, this match here is a match that
10:59 Chris Hilton would be proud of.
11:01 But the job is not done yet.
11:03 New friendlies next month against Mexico on October 14 and the United States of America
11:10 on October 18 will certainly give Chris Hilton the time and opportunity to reshape his team
11:17 ahead of next year's Africa Cup of Nations.
11:20 The two matches will certainly give an inkling as to how the Black Stars will fare at the
11:26 tournament in Ivory Coast.
11:29 Arnaud Moubarak from the Acrossport Stadium for JOY Sports.
11:33 Now, let's go to Magdan Park in La, where the closing ceremony of the Para-African Games
11:42 took place and my colleague Elon Benaya, the former coach, was there and can show you this
11:48 report.
11:49 History was made as Ghana hosted its first African Paralympic Games.
11:53 After 10 days of hosting over 10 countries in Ghana, the games, which saw Ghana win gold
11:59 in the men's and beauty football, came to a close as hundreds of people gathered at
12:05 the Magdan La Town Park in Accra to celebrate the occasion.
12:09 The Ghana University School of Arts delighted all attendees with a cultural display.
12:25 President of the Ghana Paralympic Committee Samson Dean and Deputy Sports Minister Evans
12:30 Bobie spoke at the event.
12:33 I want to say a very big thank you to all of you for participating.
12:37 We are very much aware that you have endured and you have worked so hard to make sure that
12:48 you participate, you compete for your nation.
12:53 The African Paralympic Committee and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Government of the
13:02 Republic of Ghana, the President of the Nation Nana Adedankwa Akufo-Addo, and my Honorable
13:10 Minister, Honorable Mustafa Yusuf.
13:13 We want to say a very big thank you to you all.
13:17 We are very much hopeful that the qualifications to Paris 2024, as we said, we will do it on
13:25 our own soil.
13:26 We've been able to achieve it.
13:29 Congratulations to Morocco.
13:31 Congratulations to Algeria.
13:34 Congratulations to Egypt.
13:37 And congratulations to South Africa for making Africa proud.
13:41 This is Samson Dean, the President of the African Paralympic Committee, for his vision
13:47 of bringing the standalone Para Games to Ghana.
13:52 This is Samson Dean.
13:54 How are you?
13:55 For the past 10 days, we have been witnessing the outstanding performances, dedication,
14:05 and success exhibited by our athletes.
14:10 Each and every one of you did so well during these games to reach out to victory and the
14:23 highest position of your discipline.
14:27 Thank you all.
14:29 And I wish all of you safe travel back home.
14:34 Despite less desirable showings in other disciplines, Ghana ended the tournament on a high with
14:41 their black challenge winning gold by beating Morocco 2-1 in the final on Sunday, September
14:46 10, 2023.
14:48 Ghana now have their sights set on the 2023 African Games, which takes place from March
14:54 8 to 23, 2024 in Accra.
14:59 [Music]
