AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter explains the risks that Hurricane Lee is likely to bring and where they'll be the worst.
Transcript
00:00 And we want to take a look at the latest on Lee as this storm continues to move
00:03 to the northwest.
00:05 And we want to bring in AccuWeather chief meteorologist John Porter.
00:08 As John, we're looking at a powerful storm.
00:11 It's large and we have specific impacts that we're anticipating into the New
00:15 England state. So thanks for joining us, John.
00:17 Hey, guys. Good afternoon.
00:19 That's right. The storm is going to be making its turn to the north that we've
00:22 been talking about for several days during tomorrow.
00:26 And that's going to take it on a collision course with Atlantic Canada and
00:30 eastern New England with some serious impacts there.
00:32 And John, we are getting a little bit more confident in the areas where we have
00:37 to be really prepared for heavy rain, wind and some coastal flooding.
00:41 So could you talk about what parts of New England are at greatest risk?
00:43 Well, it's eastern New England that we're most concerned about.
00:46 So from Boston down to Rhode Island, east to Cape Cod, we're talking about the
00:51 risk for damaging winds.
00:53 Also, some heavy rain concerns and coastal flooding.
00:56 You notice there still is a risk, though, as you head further west into the
00:59 interior, as this storm is going to have a big wind field and be capable of
01:03 producing some gusty winds even in the interior.
01:06 And John, we want to be transparent with our viewers and those who use
01:10 AccuWeather.com AccuWeather app regarding our confidence level.
01:13 And, you know, every day, every shift and every hour here, there's a little bit
01:17 more insight into the storm.
01:19 So where are we growing more confident things will be problematic and where are
01:23 we growing a little bit better confident, more confident in breathing easy?
01:28 Right. This is an exclusive AccuWeather way to get into the minds of AccuWeather
01:34 hurricane experts here.
01:35 About the same level of risk compared to 24 hours ago across interior, across New
01:41 England. Less risk down the coast of New Jersey.
01:44 We're not ready, though, to clear you for impacts from rain and wind there yet.
01:48 And then, of course, more risk down east Maine up into Atlanta, Canada.
01:51 This is a way for you to gauge how we're thinking the forecast is evolving.
01:55 And the very latest with that AccuWeather eyepath here.
01:58 What's the timing for landfall?
02:00 And, you know, day six and seven that we only provide here, only AccuWeather
02:05 provides with an eyepath, are really critically important when we look at the
02:08 final northernmost two plots here for this storm.
02:10 That's right. We think the significant impacts are going to start in eastern New
02:15 England on Saturday and a Saturday night.
02:17 Landfall expected in Nova Scotia first thing on Sunday morning.
02:21 But I want to point out the window of movement also includes eastern New England.
02:25 That track closer to the coast will increase the wind, increase the coastal
02:30 flooding problems and the heavy rain concerns there in a lot of places.
02:34 And I'm from New England.
02:35 I'm from eastern Connecticut.
02:36 And so I know that we're used to dealing with intense nor'easters there in New
02:40 England. This may feel like that for a lot of folks with power outage risks there.
02:45 All right. Important information there, AccuWeather chief meteorologist John
02:48 Porter and Connecticut native.
02:50 No stranger to hurricanes there.
02:52 Thank you so much there, John. We appreciate that.
02:54 And we want to take a little bit more of a look at what's going on with Hurricane
03:03 Lee, and here is another look at that eyepath forecast.
03:05 So, again, John talked about how there is still the potential for this to jog west
03:11 and maybe make a main landfall.
03:12 But the most likely scenario is that we are going to likely see landfall into
03:16 Nova Scotia. And AccuWeather was the first source to issue any forecast for Lee
03:20 24 hours before the National Hurricane Center and any other source.
03:23 So our goal is always to keep you safer and provide the most advanced notice so
03:27 you can make the best decisions for you and your family.
03:31 So as we continue to track the latest, we talked about the wind, coastal hazards
03:35 even in places like coastal Delaware or Ocean City, Maryland or New Jersey.
03:40 There will be some danger even under a blue sky or at least maybe a partly sunny
03:44 sky at times this weekend with rip currents.
03:47 So stay on top of that.
03:48 Some people get hurt and even worse with these rip currents, even if the rain and
03:54 the wind from the storm stays away to the east.
