00:00 A family from Huntington Beach, California was removed from an oversold Delta flight
00:10 when they refused to give up a seat they had purchased for their one-year-old child.
00:14 Why are seats on airplanes always oversold?
00:16 I don't get it.
00:17 Haven't you guys been in this industry long enough?
00:19 Like learn to not oversell?
00:21 This all seems very strange.
00:23 Like we're in some sort of weird airplane Twilight Zone.
00:28 As you can see in this 8-minute clip posted to YouTube, Brian and Brittany Shear protest
00:31 with a Delta employee.
00:33 The family explained they sent their 18-year-old son ahead of the family so the teenager's
00:37 seat could be used for one of the toddlers.
00:40 Delta claimed the family is in violation of an FAA regulation because their teenage son
00:45 isn't in the seat.
00:46 Then an official threatens the family with jail time.
00:48 Really?
00:49 Do we really need to go there?
00:50 Then they can remove me off the flight.
00:51 You and your whole family.
00:52 Yeah, that's fine.
00:53 So, you and your wife will be in jail and your kids will be in the hospital.
01:00 So my wife...
01:01 We're going to be in jail, and my kids are going to be what?
01:02 It's a federal offense if you don't abide by it.
01:03 I bought that seat.
01:04 So a child sitting in a car seat on a flight is a major FAA violation.
01:11 Except not.
01:12 According to the FAA's website, on a page about flying with children, they say, "The
01:16 Federal Aviation Administration strongly urges you to secure your child in a Child Restraint
01:21 System, or CRS, for the duration of your flight."
01:24 The FAA also adds, "Your arms aren't capable of holding your child securely, especially
01:28 during unexpected turbulence."
01:30 So let me get this straight.
01:31 Delta officials threatened this man with jail time for following FAA regulations just to
01:36 sell the seat that they already sold.
01:39 Listen, Delta United and basically every airline, it's called a refund.
01:44 Just do it and you might not be in this situation.
01:47 Or as my grandmother tells me, "Treat others like you would want to be treated."
01:51 UberFax on Twitter points out that Delta broke its own promise.
01:54 Last month, Delta said they'd offer up to $10,000 to passengers on overbooked flights,
01:59 but that didn't seem to come up this time.
02:01 And many were quick to side with Brian and his family, including Heather Staples, who
02:05 said this, "Wow, kudos to you for staying so calm.
02:08 I would have lost my mind."
02:10 Well beyond that, I think we're all more sensitive to these things.
02:12 We're living in a post-United Doctor time.
02:15 I mean, the time pre-United Doctor was different.
02:19 After that whole viral video with the doctor came out, it has us all looking at these situations
02:23 differently.
02:24 And also, that doctor got a buyout, so he's kind of like chillin' now.
02:28 So I think anyone who's treated like this, one, you should stand up for yourself, but
02:32 two, I think we see what happens when you do.
02:34 As of now, Delta has not made a statement about the incident.
02:38 So how would you have reacted in this situation?
