00:00 Welcome back to New Rock Stars, I'm Eric Boss,
00:01 and the Marvels is speculated to now be
00:04 the shortest MCU film at a rumored
00:06 one hour and 38 minute runtime,
00:08 and some unconfirmed reports about
00:09 what might have been removed from this film.
00:11 As someone who has spent way too much time
00:13 analyzing trailers and how promos evolve
00:15 over the course of a film's marketing life cycle,
00:17 I think I can read between the lines here
00:19 on how Marvel wants us to see this story,
00:21 why things were removed,
00:22 why a shorter runtime isn't always a bad thing,
00:24 and one insane new detail I just spotted in Loki
00:28 that could internally justify this change.
00:30 And by the way, the reason I found this
00:32 was because New Rock Stars is going back
00:33 to the first season of Loki
00:34 for an episode by episode re-breakdown.
00:37 Loki season two is coming October 6th,
00:39 and our latest rewatch is surprisingly coming up
00:41 with a ton of new visual clues
00:42 that I can't believe I missed.
00:44 On top of the new context we have
00:45 from Quantumania in the season two footage,
00:47 the episode one re-breakdown is on the channel now,
00:50 and we're gonna be doing these
00:50 throughout the month of September.
00:51 Okay, these unconfirmed reports
00:53 about the Marvels' runtime being down to 98 minutes now
00:56 come from an online source who, I guess,
00:58 correctly reported runtimes of episodes
01:00 of Ahsoka and The Mandalorian,
01:01 but they also said it wasn't final,
01:02 so take it with a grain of salt.
01:03 Meanwhile, that old knucklehead, My Time to Shine Hello,
01:06 claimed that the removed sections of the film
01:08 were what they called the musical planet.
01:10 Now, I know a lot of you are thinking,
01:11 "Wait, wait, wait, what?
01:12 "A musical planet?"
01:13 Well, yeah.
01:14 In the very first teaser for the film released in April,
01:16 there were shots of all these colorfully dressed dancers
01:19 and Carol wearing this elaborate hat
01:20 to, I guess, disguise herself,
01:22 and in the wide shot you can see Cabalica
01:23 just letting loose on that dance.
01:25 Then there was an additional shot in the July trailer
01:27 showing Park Seo Joon's character
01:29 dancing specifically with Carol,
01:31 Carol wearing this elaborate gown
01:33 that, if you look closely,
01:34 still has the Captain Marvel starburst sigil
01:36 on the bus line.
01:37 Early on, it was reported that this guy
01:38 is gonna be playing Prince Yan,
01:40 and later on it was clarified to Yan de Aladna.
01:42 So this musical planet is Aladna,
01:45 a planet that was introduced in the 2014 run
01:47 of Captain Marvel number nine
01:48 as a planet where everyone speaks in rhymes,
01:51 and the planet's women choose their mates
01:53 while the men have no freedom of choice,
01:54 but in the comics, when Prince Yan becomes king,
01:56 he had abolished this practice.
01:58 So the shot of Carol dancing with Prince Yan
02:00 might be part of a flashback
02:02 where we learn that she had a husband
02:03 or a betrothed on the side,
02:05 one that we never knew about,
02:06 and that's why she was off-world all this time.
02:08 This would just be some guy that she left behind
02:10 on the planet of Aladna,
02:11 and since that legally would make Aladna
02:13 one of Carol's homes,
02:14 that could make it vulnerable to Darth Ben,
02:16 who we learned in the July trailer
02:18 was targeting each of their home worlds.
02:20 Rather than rhyme, the movie version of Aladna
02:22 could be a kind of all-time musical,
02:24 like an opera, where everyone is constantly singing
02:26 or dancing or both.
02:27 And while I am a huge musical junkie
02:29 and I love Rogers the Musical,
02:31 and I can even get down with operas
02:33 where all the dialogue is sung in verse,
02:35 I think the average Marvel filmgoer
02:37 might find that to be a bit too much to sit through,
02:39 and an hour and 38 minutes would make the Marvels
02:41 the shortest MCU film to date.
02:43 The current ranking is the 2008 Incredible Hulk
02:45 and 2013's Thor the Dark World tied at one hour 52 minutes,
02:49 followed by 2016's Doctor Strain
02:51 and 2011's Thor at one hour 55 minutes,
02:53 then 2015's Ant-Man at one hour 57 minutes,
02:56 then Ant-Man and the Wasp at one hour 58 minutes,
02:59 then Thor Love and Thunder at one hour 59 minutes.
03:01 All the other MCU movies are over two hours.
03:03 But shorter than two hours is not a bad thing.
03:05 One of the biggest movies of this year,
03:07 Barbie, is one hour 54 minutes.
03:09 This can actually be strategically advantageous
03:11 for the studio because a shorter runtime
03:13 means that they can screen it in more theaters
03:15 on a given day and give viewers
03:16 more opportunities to see it.
03:17 Sony cleverly proved this with Venom
03:19 and Venom Let There Be Carnage.
03:21 Venom Let There Be Carnage was 90 minutes,
03:23 which by the way, is eight minutes shorter
03:24 than the Marvels is rumored to be.
03:25 And whatever your thoughts on that Carnage movie is,
03:27 it was a solid hit for Sony.
03:29 2018's Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse
03:31 was one hour 56 minutes.
03:32 Toy Story was only 80 minutes long.
03:34 And those movies are jammers.
03:36 They're fully realized, complete stories
03:38 that became all-time classics.
03:39 And you know, while the Marvels may not be
03:41 the best movie of all time,
03:42 I don't think a shorter runtime is any reason to panic.

04:58 But the crazy thing I just discovered
04:59 about this planet in Marvel's Aladna
05:01 is that Marvel Studios already teased it to us
05:04 over two years ago in Loki episode four.
05:06 That's the episode that begins with Loki and Sylvie
05:08 on the doomed planet of Lamentis One
05:10 after they fail to reach that life raft ship
05:12 in the city of Shuru, a ship that was destroyed anyway.
05:15 Loki and Sylvie sit beside this quarry pond
05:17 accepting their fate and they hold hands
05:19 and back in the TVA, Mobius and B-15
05:21 see the sacred timeline screen
05:22 forming an unprecedented steep Nexus event branch,
05:25 which isn't supposed to happen
05:26 in the minutes before an apocalyptic event.
05:28 This is how they locate Sylvie and Loki
05:30 and pull them out of there.
05:30 But on the screen, you never noticed this before,
05:32 in the upper right corner,
05:33 you can see another location listed, Aladna.
05:36 This would be a location of some other mystery Nexus event
05:40 that the TVA was tracking.
05:42 All of the other planets we see in these TVA tickers
05:44 throughout the season are actual MCU locations
05:46 that we see at some point.
05:47 Xandar, Vormir, Hala, Titan, Asgard, Morag.
05:50 I don't think any planets are listed of locations
05:52 that we don't actually see in the live action MCU.
05:54 So all the way back then,
05:55 when this episode released in July, 2021,
05:58 this was a promise that we would see Aladna at some point.
06:01 So what was the Aladna Nexus event?
06:03 We must wonder.
06:04 Did Marvel Studios give themselves this TVA option
06:07 so that if they needed to,
06:08 they could prune this musical planet subplot
06:10 from the timeline of the Marvel's film?
06:11 No, I don't think that's what happened here.
06:13 I do think we will still see the planet of Aladna
06:15 in the movie.
06:16 Some of that backstory may have been reduced.
06:18 It's worth noting that the most recent featurette trailer
06:20 did not show any shots of Aladna,
06:22 at least not the scenes where people are like
06:23 singing and dancing.
06:24 So it may just be that Marvel Studios
06:26 doesn't want the marketing to focus too much
06:28 on promising stuff from that part of the film
06:29 and instead focus more on the relationship
06:31 among the three lead characters.
06:32 Lamentis I was a mining planet
06:34 that was facing destruction in the year 2077.
06:37 I just find it interesting that the moon we see
06:39 in the Marvel's footage also has an archeological dig site
06:42 with the Kree digging up what ends up being
06:44 the second Bengal.
06:45 Could the cause of Lamentis' apocalypse
06:47 have come from the events of this movie?
06:49 Some kind of intergalactic annihilation wave crisis
06:51 that sweeps planet by planet
06:53 with the Kree covering their tracks
06:55 from the artifacts that they dig up on each of these places.
06:57 Was Lamentis I a Kree mining colony?
07:00 Whatever Dar Ben does to Aladna in this movie
07:02 could go into the historical record
07:04 as an event that the TVA keeps track of.
07:06 And the fact that Marvel Studios told the design team
07:08 on Loki to insert Aladna in there
07:09 tells us that it has always been part of their plan
07:11 for some shit to go down there.
