00:00 If I say to you, you can make something,
00:04 and it is going to be so beautiful,
00:07 the best thing you've ever done.
00:09 Only one problem.
00:10 It's only going to last for 20 minutes.
00:13 There are too many things to say about why Robert Irwin
00:18 is so important to the history of art,
00:21 even though so many people involved in art
00:24 have never seen a work.
00:28 When you're making art,

00:38 He had stopped making exhibitable artworks.
00:42 Those were complicated times.
00:44 I got rid of the studio.
00:46 I have dismantled the thing.
00:49 It's not that you're just removing something,
00:51 but you're going deeper into something else.
00:56 The things that I do as an artist,
00:58 they're entirely and totally experiential.
01:01 Everything I do now is in relationship
01:04 to a situation that already exists.
01:07 What I do is respond.
01:09 He would go anywhere, anytime, for anyone.
01:13 He was able to use any kind of space
01:19 and see an artwork in it.
01:24 Where is art? Where do we look to find art?
01:28 He created a very different path
01:30 about what it meant to be an artist.
01:32 His art can engage anybody on a very visceral level.
01:37 I feel, therefore I think, therefore I am.

01:54 What's that one feeling you get when you're in this space?
01:57 Well, I'm not going to tell you.
02:00 I'll let you figure it out.
