00:46 Since the 1960s, one band has blazed a trail like no other,
00:50 selling over 250 million albums across six decades,
00:54 leaving an indelible mark on the musical landscape.
00:58 They have come to define the very essence of popular culture,
01:01 the ultimate rock-and-roll band.
01:04 Don't you agree? Yeah, exactly.
01:06 I, like so many others, have followed this band
01:09 throughout my entire life, buying their records,
01:11 watching their live shows, doing anything I can do
01:13 to even be the tiniest bit as cool as them.
01:16 They are my absolute favorites, and they're here with us today.

02:15 which is called "Angry," and the video of it,
02:18 which you'll see later.
02:19 And "Angry" is the first single from our new album
02:22 called "Hackney Diamonds," which is why we're in Hackney,
02:25 and which comes out in October the 20th.
02:28 -That's right. -So that's why we're here.

02:36 I will say, right after this Q&A,
02:37 we'll be showing you the video, world premiere of the video
02:41 with someone really cool that you all know is in the video.
02:44 And the album comes out October 20th.
02:46 "Hackney Diamonds," what does that mean?
02:49 What does that mean to you, Keith?
02:51 Anything? What is "Hackney Diamonds"?
02:53 -It got called "Hackney Diamonds"
02:55 because I think we were flinging ideas around for titles,
03:00 and we went from hit and run, smash and grab,
03:03 and somehow, between that... -I like those.
03:06 -...we came up with "Hackney Diamonds,"
03:09 which is like a variation of the both.
03:11 And also, it's a London band, you know?
03:14 And we thought that was --
03:15 [ Cheers and applause ]
03:20 -But this "Hackney Diamonds," isn't it like a type of slang?
03:25 -Yeah. It's like when you get your windscreen broken
03:30 on Saturday night in Hackney, all around.
03:32 And all the bits go on the street.
03:34 -Yeah, the shattered windscreen. -That's the school.
03:36 -Or smash and grab. -That's "Hackney Diamonds."
03:38 -That's "Hackney Diamonds," yeah, exactly, yeah.
03:40 Ronnie, how long did it take to make this album?
03:44 -We did it pretty quick, actually.
03:47 There were lots of ideas floating about,
03:49 and we gathered them all together
03:50 just before Christmas last year
03:53 and made a go of it, didn't we? -Yeah.
03:55 -We cut them all very quickly.
03:56 -It's been 18 years since you made it.
03:59 -We've been very lazy. -There was a blitz up.
04:01 -There was a blitz up. -That's not very quick at all.
04:03 -We have done something.
04:05 We've been on the road most of the time.
04:06 -Yeah. -No, we were --
04:08 Maybe we were a bit too kind of, like, lazy,
04:11 and then suddenly we said, "Why don't we go --
04:13 Let's put a deadline.
04:15 Let's make a record and put a deadline."
04:17 So Keith and I and Ronnie had this chat, and we said,
04:20 "Okay, we'll make this record Christmas,
04:22 and we're going to finish it by Valentine's Day."
04:24 -So we made two albums. -Yeah, exactly, yeah.
04:27 -So we went into the studio, like Ronnie said, in December,
04:32 and we cut 23 tracks very quickly
04:36 and finished them off in January and mixed them in February,
04:39 something like that. -You started in --
04:41 About right. -That's about right.
04:42 -Did you go, too, with Keith in Jamaica?
04:44 I heard rumors of that. Where are you starting?
04:46 -In Jamaica, we started -- We wrote "Angry," actually.
04:50 Mick had the thing ready to go,
04:52 but it's where we kind of put the track together,
04:54 and along with many others.
04:57 But it was the first one to stick out.
05:01 -Yeah, we started out in -- Keith and I and --
05:05 -Steve. -And Steve and Matt
05:07 went to Jamaica just to --
05:08 We said, "We're going to mess about in the studio."
05:10 And we went there, and we started kicking ideas around.
05:13 Then we went to New York, and Ronnie joined us.
05:15 And then, after that, we got a producer called Andy Watt,
05:19 who kicked us up the ass. -Yeah.
05:20 -And then we went to Los Angeles
05:22 and cut the tracks like I told you.
05:24 -And did -- It must feel different,
05:27 not having Charlie Watts in the studio with you, playing.
05:32 What was that like?
05:34 -It's all -- Ever since Charlie's gone,
05:37 it's different, of course.
05:38 You know, I mean, he's number four.
05:41 He's missing. He's up there.
05:42 -Yeah, I did see a lot of number fours around.
05:45 -Of course he's missed, incredibly.
05:48 But thanks to Charlie Watts, also, we have Steve Jordan,
05:52 who was Charlie's recommendation for,
05:55 if anything should happen to him,
05:58 "Steve Jordan's your man."
05:59 -He picked Steve Jordan. -Yeah.
06:01 And, you know, just out of way, way, way back.
06:05 And also, you know, he's been a friend of ours.
06:07 I've worked with Steve.
06:08 So it was a kind of natural progression.
06:11 You know, it would have been a lot harder
06:13 without Charlie's blessing on that, you know?
06:16 But at the same time, it's a hard team, you know?
06:18 -Did you get to do any tracks with him on the album?
06:21 -With Charlie? -Yeah.
06:22 -Yeah, so there's 12 tracks on the album,
06:25 and 10 -- Well, I think, actually, it's not true,
06:29 'cause it's not on there.
06:30 But most of it's Steve.
06:32 But two are tracks we recorded in 2019 with Charlie.
06:35 And so we used two of the tracks
06:39 that we recorded with Charlie before.
06:41 -"Live By The Sword" and "Mess It Up."
06:44 -Yeah. -Those are the two tracks.
06:45 -Yeah. -And also, I heard a rumor
06:47 of Bill. -Yes.
06:48 Bill -- And we asked Bill to come into the studio.
06:50 -He was creeping. -Did he get it?
06:52 He creeped in? -"Live By The Sword."
06:53 -And Bill came in and did one track.
06:56 So we had the original "Rolling Stones"
06:58 within the sections is on one track.
07:00 -Wow. That's so funny. -But most of it's new.
07:02 But this is from 2019.
07:04 -Yeah. The first song is "Angry."
07:07 Is "Angry" a theme of the album?
07:09 -Well, yeah, Keith and I thought the theme of the album
07:12 should be "angry." -You're getting angry
07:14 as I'm saying it. -Every track

07:51 So then we had a second idea,
07:54 which was not to make it about angry every track,
07:57 but to make them a bit more eclectic
08:00 and have a few love songs and ballads,
08:03 country kind of things. -Ah.
08:05 -So we got a mixture.
08:07 I think the last time I saw the three of you,
08:09 you played Hyde Park here in London.
08:11 It was amazing.
08:12 And Hyde Park, if you've never seen this show,
08:14 it's beautiful. It's in the park.
08:15 And it starts around 7 o'clock.
08:17 The sun is out, and then the sun goes down.
08:19 And everyone's out by 10 o'clock.
08:21 It's very British rules.
08:23 Everyone out. Everyone -- Go, go, go, go, go, go.
08:25 Everyone out. Never happened. Go, go, go.
08:27 And so it was a great show.
08:29 And I talked to you the next day.
08:31 I talked to Mick, and I said, "What'd you think of the show?
08:34 I thought it was great. How'd you like it?"
08:35 And you go, "Well, you know, we're not really a daytime band."
08:38 [ Laughter ]
08:43 I thought that was so funny.
08:45 -It was like "Sympathy for the Devil" at 8 o'clock.
08:47 [ Laughter ]
08:49 -You don't want to paint it black
08:51 while you're eating a sandwich with your kids.
08:53 -Not really. -Yeah.
08:54 But do you think of yourself as a nighttime band, yeah?
08:58 -It usually is. -Yes.
08:59 -Yeah. Yeah.
09:01 But this album -- this album can be played at any time of day.
09:04 -Any time of the day, any part of the world you want,
09:06 any time of the day. -Hackney Diamonds.

09:26 When you were on my show -- and thank you for doing my show.

09:31 and you were smoking.
09:33 And you're not allowed to smoke in a studio.
09:38 And these alarms went off, and a fire marshal --
09:41 I didn't even know we had a fire marshal.
09:43 A fire marshal came down to the studio and said,
09:45 "Mr. Richard, you know, you shouldn't smoke."
09:47 And you go, "I know it's bad for my health."

09:54 Do you remember that? -Yeah, I remember that.
09:56 And at the time, it was true.
09:58 [ Laughter ]
10:01 -Do you still smoke?
10:02 -No, man. Right after that, I gave it up.

10:09 This is the 24th studio album.
10:12 24th for you guys. -Yeah.
10:14 -Can you remember the press conference for the first?
10:16 -Yeah, I remember the press conference.
10:18 So, Keith and I were in a pub in Denmark Street,
10:22 and we had the album, and there were two journalists --
10:25 one from the NME and one from the Melody Maker.
10:27 We bought them a pint of beer.
10:29 We said, "Here's our album. Have a listen."
10:32 And then we went out. That was it.
10:33 -Yeah, yeah. That was the press conference.
10:35 A little different than what's happening right now.
10:36 -There's no photos, nothing. -Nothing. No.
10:38 -It sold well. -Yeah.
10:40 How were the reviews?
10:41 -The reviews were mixed, but it sold well.
10:44 [ Laughter ]
10:46 -Yeah, that's good.
10:48 When a singer wants to make a record,
10:51 do they want to make a record?
10:52 You want to get the band while they're hot.
10:54 -When the singer wants to make a record, you record him.
10:58 Because you never know the next time you're going to get it.
11:01 So when Nick said to me, "I've got some time,
11:04 and I want to make a record,"
11:06 I put all the bullets underneath and said, "Boom, let's go."
11:11 -That's good to know, isn't it?
