Museum of Stories: Bury Park is bringing Luton's community tales to the centre stage. One of the stories included in the new audio-based app tracks down a tragic ghost girl who haunts opticians.

00:00 I'm really partial to a ghost story and so I've always loved the one that's been contributed
00:08 by Alexandra Opticians and Dr. Alvy who owns and runs it, which is about this very room
00:14 actually, a little girl who is sometimes spotted here at Christmas time.
00:19 And apart from just being a cool ghost story, it's also got a second half to it because
00:24 we had Jackie Gunn, who's our resident historian, who's contributed loads of amazing historical
00:31 stories. She started researching who lived here at the turn of the last century and she
00:35 reckons she might have found out who this little girl was.
00:38 So this is the famous shelf in the consulting room that actually broke the story of the
00:44 girl on the shelf, which is over 100 years old. The famous girl, of course, was seen
00:48 sitting on the shelf by one of the previous eye doctors who used to work here. Things
00:52 started to happen in the consulting room. Sort of sounds, a giggling child apparently,
00:57 which one of the patients reported.
01:00 I think the younger generation now aren't aware of, literally there is history in Bury
01:06 Park, Dunstable Road. I spoke to somebody the other day and they thought, oh, we're
01:11 only going back to about 1960 and I said, excuse me, 1850! And they were so surprised
01:18 that there was history here.
