“I Live in a Tent With My Two Kids So We Can Be Close to the Ground – I Prefer It to a Constricted House”

A single mum lives in a tent with her two children to be “close to the ground” – and says she prefers it to a modern “constricted” house.

Lucy Aura, 41, has spent the last five months living in a tent full time - after she says it became too expensive to rent a property as a single mum.

But the yoga teacher now says “nature was calling” her and she loves being “close to the ground” instead of being “constricted” in a modern house.

Brit Lucy, who is originally from London, lets her kids – aged five and seven – run around barefoot and loves having a campfire every night for “entertainment”.

She pays £51-a-week for her pitch and power on a home owners land instead of splashing out £259-a-week for a rental property – saving £832-a-month.

00:00 So yeah, still living in a tent.
00:01 I'm in a different spot now.
00:03 Do you love camping life?
00:04 - Yes.
00:05 (gentle music)
00:08 - I've been living as a single mother
00:12 with my two children in a tent in Far North Queensland
00:16 for the last six months now.
00:18 We first moved into this tent
00:20 due to the current rental crisis.
00:22 But as we've continued on this journey,
00:24 we've realized how much we really love living in this way.
00:28 We spend most of our time together
00:30 and we are fully immersed in nature
00:32 and connected to the elements.
00:35 Just sitting in a point in my life
00:37 where I'm so proud of myself
00:39 and I just wanted to share it with you.
00:42 So yeah, still living in a tent.
00:43 I'm in a different spot now.
00:45 So we've moved, so we've got some,
00:48 a little bit of forestry, which is really beautiful.
00:51 And I just made a fire with some seriously damp wood
00:56 because we've had a lot of rain in the past,
00:59 yeah, like week or so.
01:01 So we've had some issues with flooding in our tent
01:04 and yeah, just really staying grateful.
01:07 Are we grateful guys?
01:08 - Yes.
01:09 - How grateful are we?
01:10 Do you love camping life?
01:13 - Yes.
01:14 (gentle music)
01:16 (gentle music continues)
01:20 - My nervous system was really struggling
01:42 when we first moved into the tent
01:43 and my practices were suffering.
01:45 I've been practicing and teaching yoga
01:47 since before my children were born.
01:49 And these practices are literally everything
01:52 that gets me through my life.
01:54 They made me feel safe in my body,
01:56 allowing me to trust my journey
01:58 and they strengthen my nervous system
02:00 and allow me to be the mother that I am.
02:04 My nervous system is so strong now
02:05 that I get out of my tent, straight onto my mat
02:08 and my children give me time and space
02:10 and they play sweet little games around the fire.
02:14 Living in a tent saves me so much money.
02:17 The campsite is cheap rent and includes all bills.
02:20 And that means that I have lots of money to spend
02:23 on keeping these beautiful children healthy
02:25 with organic food.
02:27 We eat probably about 95% organic
02:29 and we eat out in nature,
02:31 which is so good for the nervous system.
02:33 And I just did the washing up and I...
02:36 (laughs)
02:38 Yeah, I do.
02:38 I tell them that 'cause I have to do it all on my own.
02:41 So I'm doing the washing up and I'm also cooking
02:43 and making the fire and looking after my kids.
02:46 And yeah, just super proud of myself.
02:48 Woo-hoo!
