93-year-old killed in dog attack in Modesto

A 93-year-old woman was mauled to death by her neighbor's dogs in Stanislaus County.

00:00 A Modesto family is remembering their matriarch as a loving lady full of life who always had

00:06 a smile on her face.

00:07 That's how neighbors also recall 93-year-old Chanthy Filavong.

00:12 She's just the quietest, smiliest little lady.

00:15 She was wonderful.

00:16 Janice Dendulk lives next door to the Filavong family and was home Thursday afternoon when

00:22 a pair of dogs got loose.

00:23 I recognize the dogs as our neighbor's dogs.

00:26 The dogs, which Dendulk says are the breed Cane Corso, a mix of Mastiff and Pitbull,

00:31 first showed up at Dendulk's front door, as you can see on her security camera.

00:37 All of a sudden they take off and then I hear screaming.

00:41 And so I take off out the door and I hear the mom and she's screaming for help and I

00:46 see the grandma on the ground.

00:47 The dogs have her.

00:49 Dendulk says the dogs trapped Filavong between Filavong's front door and the wall.

00:54 She started throwing shoes and pots at the animals and says Filavong's grandsons ran

00:59 outside to help and they managed to drag her inside their home.

01:03 It was chaos.

01:04 It was a matter of like 80 seconds.

01:09 Looking back it was 80 seconds.

01:12 And just like that, everybody's lives just changed.

01:17 It was awful.

01:21 The family and Dendulk were holding on to hope Filavong would make it.

01:26 She was stable Thursday evening, but took a turn Friday and passed away.

01:31 Dendulk is now relying on her faith and friendship with the family, who copes with such a tragic

01:37 loss.

01:38 If I'm feeling this way, I can't imagine how they're feeling.

01:41 Like that's their home.

01:43 You know, and they have to live with that.

01:44 We went to the home of the dog owners and the woman who answered the door told me she

01:49 was in Arizona at the time of the attack.

01:52 Now Modesto police say they're still investigating and can't say one way or the other if there

01:56 will be any arrests or charges in this case.
