00:00 Faced with the challenges of adapting to climate chaos, mitigating CO2 emissions and improving
00:06 living conditions, William Ruto wants to see African nations present a united front.
00:12 "Friends, this summit is a moment to imagine a bold and radically affirmative African future,
00:22 a continent that thrives and shapes climate-proof future for all."
00:28 Responsible for less than 4% of the world's CO2 emissions, the continent contains some
00:33 of the world's most climate-vulnerable countries, with more than 36 million people currently
00:38 affected by prolonged drought.
00:41 And it's not on track to improve.
00:43 The IMF says that even if warming is limited to two degrees, a range of extreme weather
00:48 phenomena could cost the continent $50 billion per year in adaptation by 2050.
00:53 "Africa and many other parts of the developing world have continued to suffer losses and
00:59 damages arising from climate change that require to be supported for the reconstruction and
01:04 rebuilding."
01:05 And with 600 million living without electricity, there is an urgent development imperative
01:10 too.
01:11 At a time when fossil fuels are high risk due to global instability, renewables could
01:16 be the answer.
01:17 "The continent has enough potential to be entirely self-sufficient with the mixture
01:26 of wind, solar, geothermal, sustainable biomass and hydropower."
01:33 But with the continent's debt at its highest in over a decade, new investments are costly
01:38 and interest rates are crippling for poor countries.
01:41 Way back in 2009, developed countries pledged $100 billion per year in climate finance for
01:46 poorer countries - a promise never fulfilled.
01:50 The vast funding gap caused a stand-off at COP27 and leaders in Nairobi this week are
01:56 looking for African unity on green development and to send a message to those who could finance
