Dabo Swinney on Duke's defense
Transcript
00:00 common characteristics of his defenses in the past?
00:03 Rarely beat themselves.
00:04 I mean, when you watch, you just keep watching the tape,
00:08 rarely is somebody out of position.
00:11 They rarely give up a big play bust,
00:16 you know, where somebody's just absolutely,
00:18 you know, you know it when you see it, right?
00:20 Sometimes, I mean, everybody, you know,
00:21 make plays, football's football,
00:22 but rarely do they beat themselves.
00:26 Very, very smart, very well coached.
00:29 Their eyes are always where they need to be,
00:31 and just a fundamentally sound group, always has been.
00:34 And I think if you really look at his track record
00:37 and his background even before wake,
00:39 you know, that characteristic has always shown up.
00:42 So, you know, a new coordinator was with him at wake
00:46 and came over from A&M as well,
00:48 but just a defense that plays hard, plays smart,
00:53 and, you know, you have to finish against this group.
00:58 You got to put drives together, and you have to finish,
01:00 and then they take the ball away at an alarmingly high rate.
01:04 So, led the nation last year in fumble recoveries
01:09 and second in turnover margins.
01:11 So, they did a good job of taking care of the ball
01:15 on offense, and they did an amazing job
01:17 of creating turnovers.
01:19 So, again, I think a lot of that is just is coached.
01:23 They do a really, really good job, and they buy into it.
01:25 And, again, they use their personnel
01:29 in a very, very good way.
01:30 And you get in some third and longs on these guys,
01:32 you'll see some exotic-type stuff.
01:35 So, well-coached, well-coached group.
