00:00 More than 1 million Filipinos ride public transport every day.
00:05 It's a burden that every commuter has to bear.
00:13 Why is it so hard to travel in Bayaniwan?
00:17 Here's what you need to know.
00:20 There are four reasons that make it hard for passengers, especially here in Metro Manila.
00:28 First, to get a massage.
00:30 Second, waiting time.
00:32 Or the time it takes to wait for a ride.
00:34 Third, travel time.
00:37 And fourth, road safety.
00:39 According to the data of the Passenger Forum, an advocacy group.
00:44 Massages are one of the main concerns of passengers.
00:49 Commuters are workers, students,
00:53 mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and even adults
00:58 who need to go to work and office
01:01 need to spend a lot.
01:04 When it comes to their budget for food,
01:07 you will add to that, the cost of a massage is higher.
01:10 You will add to that, the price of oil products is higher.
01:15 So, any increase in the cost of a massage is not acceptable
01:19 because it has a big effect on the budget.
01:21 Aside from the high cost of a massage,
01:23 waiting for a ride is even longer.
01:27 Sometimes, it takes one to two hours to ride.
01:32 One of the reasons why it's hard to ride is due to heavy traffic.
01:38 According to the Japan International Cooperation Agency,
01:42 more than 5 billion pesos are wasted due to traffic every year.
01:49 For example, in Pasig City,
01:51 one of the so-called bottlenecks in the entire Metro Manila,
01:55 because of the heavy traffic,
01:57 the PUVs do not reach their destination on time.
02:03 This results in long waiting times for passengers.
02:07 It also adds up when it rains and the roads are wet.
02:12 Can you still do it, fellow citizens?
02:14 Another problem that makes the waiting time and travel time longer
02:19 is the fact that the connection of our public transportation is not seamless.
02:25 Meaning, from a jeepney, for example, to Quezon Ave,
02:32 the connection is not direct.
02:34 You will go down to MRT.
02:37 If we do not add the possibility of a simple person to ride,
02:42 what happens is they try to get their own vehicle.
02:46 Some people try to get a motorcycle,
02:50 while others try to get a car.
02:53 In 2022, there will be more than a million registered private vehicles
02:59 and this will increase every year.
03:02 If you cannot afford a bus or train,
03:05 there are motorcycle taxi, taxi, and other online booking transportation apps.
03:12 You can also add a bike lane for cyclists.
03:17 Because of this, the issue of road safety is also increasing.
03:21 Road safety is also important, but it becomes an issue
03:26 when there are particular concerns.
03:28 There are signs of dangerous road conditions
03:33 because our motorists do not follow road rules
03:37 and other things like crime.
03:39 According to the Philippine Statistics Authority,
03:42 more than 11,000 road accidents occur on the road.
03:47 An additional PUV and a proper system for public transportation
03:53 is the solution to the problem of commuters.
03:57 In road transport, our jeeps should be added,
04:02 and our buses should be added.
04:04 If possible, there are places, like what was done in EDSA,
04:08 that have a dedicated lane for a bus line.
04:12 The busway helped a lot in fixing EDSA.
04:15 We do not consider the busway perfect,
04:18 the EDSA carousel, we have a lot of issues there,
04:21 but it has a big impact on the bus system in EDSA.
04:26 Let's imagine if we can do that in other parts of Metro Manila,
04:30 that we can dedicate a lane, a lane that is like a BRT.
04:35 The train should be fixed, it should not crack out,
04:38 and it should be well maintained.
04:40 According to the Interagency Council for Traffic of DOTR,
04:44 they are working on a way to make commuters more vulnerable.
04:49 For example, the EDSA carousel.
04:52 In the past, buses used to run in different places.
04:56 Now, there is a designated area that is safe for passengers.
05:02 We call this a paradigm shift.
05:05 In the past, our passengers used to run in different places
05:10 along the length of the EDSA.
05:13 Because of the EDSA bus carousel,
05:15 our passengers now think of going to a designated area,
05:21 designated station,
05:23 where they can ride without any pressure, without any pain, and safely.
05:32 According to our statistics, our first quarter, January to June,
05:40 we have an average daily of 138,000 passengers.
05:52 They are planning to do this in other parts of the Philippines
05:57 so that passengers will not have a hard time riding.
06:01 The lines of the train, like the MRT and LRT,
06:05 are also being fixed for a more comfortable ride.
06:09 The Pasig River Ferry System, which is free to ride,
06:13 can also be an alternative.
06:16 Ferries can be used from Manila to Makati.
06:21 There are also bike lanes as an alternative to those who choose to commute by bike.
06:27 It is still a hot topic if this will be a shared lane with motorists.
06:33 There are many creative ways that can be done.
06:36 But the framework is to veer away from private vehicles,
06:40 which is the major way of transportation.
06:43 We should focus on public transportation.
06:47 There are projects and we can see that the projects
06:54 that the Department of Transportation is doing are ongoing.
06:57 The MMDA is also helping,
07:00 where our stations are being expanded.
