00:00 Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:18 up all of Kent's sporting action. I'm Bartholomew Hall and here's what to expect on this Friday
00:23 the 1st of September.
00:26 We'll be looking ahead to this week's football matches, including our non-league fixture
00:30 of the week, Chatham Town are hosting Ramsgate in the FA Cup.
00:33 I'll be joined by the Invicta Dynamos as they look ahead to the start of the ice hockey
00:39 season here in the county.
00:43 And as always, we'll have all this week's action replay with videos and pictures sent
00:47 in by you, the KNTV viewers.
00:51 And the Tornadoes, Corfball Club and Academy's second team have celebrated a successful sporting
00:59 season after winning the South East Regional League.
01:03 The Chatham-based team are one of the most successful in the UK at the mixed-gender sport,
01:07 supported by some of England's first team in their coaching staff.
01:10 Reflecting on winning the league, squad captain Rebecca Hanks said doing so brought "lots
01:15 of joy and feeling of accomplishment to the whole team".
01:18 The Tornadoes train at Chatham Grammar School every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and
01:22 play their matches on Saturday.
01:25 A teenager from Herne Bay Swimming Club finished inside the top ten at the English National
01:30 Swimming Championships.
01:32 Tom Atkins qualified for the final in the 50 metre freestyle race, where he earned an
01:36 eighth place finish.
01:38 Club mate Jessica Perkins, who is also 14, was in the girls 50 metre freestyle category
01:43 in Sheffield.
01:44 She was half a second from her personal best time.
01:47 The club have also had a successful season, with a record number of swimmers qualifying
01:51 for the Kent Championships, as well as eight swimmers achieving qualifying times for the
01:56 South East Regional Championships.
01:59 Next and Leeds and Broomfield Cricket Club are preparing for their National Village Cup
02:03 final on Sunday at none other than Lords.
02:06 The team are preparing to take on Staffordshire side Milford Hall this weekend.
02:12 Fresh off their victory in the Kent League Division 1, Leeds are poised for a potential
02:16 double triumph.
02:18 They clinched the division title with a resounding 10 wicket win over Harville.
02:22 Chairman Lee Davis expressed the team's excitement about playing at the iconic Lords Stadium,
02:27 describing it as a dream come true for any recreational cricket player.
02:33 Next and Gillingham's boss Neil Harris says his team need to work as one to score more
02:37 goals in their league games.
02:39 It comes after being unable to put more than one on the score sheet so far.
02:43 It means after Kent's only EFL side have had a strong showing in some of their cup
02:47 games, including holding their own against Luton Town in a match that ended 3-2 in favour
02:53 of the Premier League side.
02:55 The Jools boss says it's important that his group both attack and defend as one team going
02:59 into their next League 2 fixture against Colchester.
03:02 "I've always prided my sides on having a good defensive mentality.
03:08 That's every player on the pitch is a defender without the ball.
03:13 It's our job to try and keep clean sheets as a group.
03:15 But when we go down to the other end, whether it's open play or set plays, it's our job
03:19 as a team to score goals.
03:21 So I don't look at Tom Nicholls, Ashley Nadeson, Macaulay Bond, Ollie Hawkins, it's just the
03:27 lads that have got to score goals.
03:28 No, no, we've got to be better on set plays.
03:30 Some of the balls in the other night with Joe were so good that we've got to get our
03:33 heads on them.
03:34 So the onus becomes on Connor Marson, Shad Ogie, Max Eymer, Tim De Young, Sean Williams,
03:40 Robbie McKenzie, Scott Malone.
03:41 They've got to chip in goals as well.
03:43 I'm just painting the picture of we score as a team, concede as a team.
03:47 So do we need to score more goals?
03:49 Yeah we do.
03:51 But once we adjusted the set up in January, we didn't fail to score many times in the
03:55 second half of last season.
03:56 And I don't expect to see us struggle too often this year."
04:00 Well with that in mind, let's take a look at this weekend's fixtures.
04:03 I think I misspoke there.
04:04 League Two second place Gillingham will visit 15th place Grimsby Town this Saturday.
04:08 Of course, the Gillingham's looking to bounce back after that 3-0 defeat last time out against
04:13 Colchester.
04:14 Ebbs Fleet United will welcome York City.
04:17 All eyes on the Fleet striker Dominic Poulian, who has the National League's highest scoring
04:21 rate so far, six goals in five games.
04:24 In the National League South then, Dover welcome Chippenham Town as they try to avoid getting
04:28 into the bottom four this weekend.
04:30 Whilst Tunbridge visit Slough, Dartford are at Taunton and Maidstone United take the four
04:34 hour drive down to Weymouth.
04:38 Now there's no It's Me In League this weekend as they take an FA Cup break.
04:42 It's first round qualifying as the Premier sides join in on the club action.
04:46 Plenty of club games going on in the county.
04:48 The likes of Favresham welcoming in Lewis, Hightown hosting Hanworth Villa and Sevenoaks
04:52 bringing in Whitehawk.
04:53 But this week, our non-league fixture of the week, right at the top of this list, is Chatham
04:58 Town versus Ramsgate, the first Kent derby of the FA Cup this season.
05:02 And because that game is our non-league fixture of the week, it means that this week I spoke
05:06 to Jordie Robbins, central midfielder at Chatham Town, about what fans can expect at the fixture.
05:11 Well, Jordie, thank you very much for joining me today and welcome to Invictus Sport.
05:16 The fixture this weekend, Ramsgate versus Chatham, hosted by yourselves in the FA Cup,
05:21 it's our fixture of the week.
05:24 Before we get to that, I have to just point to this.
05:28 Chatham Town, the new boys on the block in the Italian Premier.
05:33 So far, no losses in all your five games and you're top of the league.
05:36 That must feel good.
05:37 Yeah, it's a really good feeling.
05:39 Obviously, we don't want to get ahead of ourselves.
05:41 We just wanted to have a nice, positive start in the new league because it is a step up.
05:46 Every game you can feel a slightly different intensity.
05:50 I come off the pitch a little bit more broken.
05:52 I think that's the same with all the players.
05:53 You just feel like you've been physically, you've had a bit more of a fight each game.
05:57 But yeah, we just wanted to get off to a good start.
05:59 Fortunately, we've been lucky enough to have that.
06:02 We had a good preseason.
06:03 We're always working on Tuesday, Thursdays.
06:06 It's good to see that it started to pay off nice and early.
06:09 And we just got to try and continue that momentum now because we've got a real tough set of fixtures coming up.
06:15 And you'll hate me for asking this, but you used to play for Maidstone United.
06:20 How would it feel to bring Chatham back up into the National League South?
06:26 Yeah, I was only there for a little bit, but yeah, it'd be a great thing to be able to do.
06:31 I remember playing with some of the lads that were part of the Maidstone team that went up through the leagues and went on that nice run.
06:39 And it was always one of the things on a personal level when I came to Chatham to maybe try and emulate that.
06:45 I'd seen the success that they'd had.
06:47 I saw the vision of the club.
06:48 And over the last couple of years, we've made some good steps in that direction.
06:53 But yeah, to obviously be able to maybe continue that over the next few years is definitely a goal of all of us.
06:59 So yeah, looking forward to it.
07:01 Fantastic. And then let's talk about this weekend then.
07:04 Ramsgate, it's the first Kent Derby of the FA Cup this season so far.
07:09 Does that sort of add to the excitement for you?
07:11 Yeah, I think so. It's going to be a good occasion.
07:14 There's a little bit of history between us and Ramsgate.
07:16 Obviously, last season, it came down to a real tight title race at the end.
07:22 And we had a big game at home last year, I think with three or four games at the end of the season.
07:27 And so I think that's probably added a little bit extra as well.
07:31 But it's always a Kent Derby in the FA Cup in a great competition is always going to be a big game.
07:37 But we've just got to approach it like we always do, just as a normal game.
07:42 We always try and prep right.
07:43 And then the good thing is when you're consistent around your preparation like that each week,
07:48 then you don't really have to change too much when it comes to an FA Cup game or a Kent Derby or anything like that.
07:53 So yeah, we'll be ready to go.
07:55 And like I said, we'll treat it like a normal game, but we're looking forward to it.
07:58 And again, it's a great competition and we enjoy playing in it.
08:01 We'd love to go on a nice run.
08:04 I know that that's what most teams are going to try and do.
08:07 I know the fans obviously like the FA Cup as well.
08:09 So it's going to be a good day.
08:11 And yeah, we're looking forward to it.
08:13 - Yeah, I was going to ask about that.
08:14 It's quite fascinating, really.
08:15 It sort of comes around every year.
08:17 You have your sort of run in it, but does it have that sort of special sort of element to it?
08:22 - I'd say it does have a slightly different feel to it.
08:24 You know, a cup competition always does.
08:26 You always hear about teams.
08:28 Sometimes you see, obviously, the teams that aren't maybe doing too well in the league,
08:31 that they go and have an incredible FA Cup run.
08:34 It's weird how it works.
08:35 There is a slightly different feel to it.
08:37 But I mean, as players, obviously, it's just that it's another game for us.
08:40 That's the mentality that you've got to have for it.
08:42 And obviously for the fans, I know some of them might have slightly different feelings about the FA Cup.
08:48 But there's always that added little bit.
08:51 Yeah, it's always something that I've wanted to do is have a nice little league run.
08:54 And yeah, you can always think that there's next year.
08:59 But I remember an old manager saying, you know, he's been saying that for a while.
09:03 And you know, so many players, there's always that feeling, we're going to run next year.
09:07 But before you know it, you're out of years.
09:09 So yeah, that's what we're definitely looking to do this season.
09:13 Absolutely. And Chatham Town's fan base seems to be on the rise.
09:17 It feels like there's a bit more of a buzz after the success of the last few seasons.
09:21 But I have to ask you, the promotion video that you took part in this year for the new kits,
09:26 that was something we hadn't seen before from Chatham Town.
09:29 What was that like to be part of?
09:30 I don't like talking about it.
09:34 No, you know what, it was good fun.
09:37 It's been plastered all around Chatham, around all the screens and stuff in the bar.
09:43 So every time I walk into training, I'm confronted with it.
09:45 But no, it was a good thing to be a part of.
09:48 I think it's just another example of Chatham trying to be forward thinking,
09:53 trying to make sure that we're progressing in the right direction.
09:56 And you know, it's a really nice kit as well.
09:58 So I think in order to get it out there, I see a lot of other, like the young kids and stuff
10:04 that are coming to the games wearing it and stuff like that.
10:06 So you don't always see that at non-league games.
10:10 It's often they're wearing Premier League kits and things like that.
10:13 So, yeah, it was a fun thing to be a part of.
10:17 Me and Grace from the women's team, we obviously went and did it.
10:20 But the guys that are behind the scenes on that, they're absolute wizards.
10:23 I'll give them a shout out, Jack and Zach.
10:26 They do a great job.
10:28 So that was good fun.
10:30 Brilliant. And then a final question.
10:31 You mentioned the youngsters that come along to the games at the weekend.
10:34 From a player's perspective, what can people expect when they come down to a Chatham game?
10:39 And if they wanted to this weekend?
10:41 Well, they're going to be, hopefully, they're going to be entertained.
10:43 You know, we like to play a nice style.
10:46 And, you know, we like to get the ball down and play, you know, when we can.
10:49 But we've also got a lot of attacking options going forward.
10:53 So there'll be times where we're able to not necessarily go and crash it,
10:58 but we can go more direct when we need to.
11:00 We can play slip the balls in behind.
11:03 So that's the biggest thing.
11:04 I think that you'll come down and you'll be entertained.
11:06 I think there'll be a nice atmosphere.
11:08 So it'd be a good day.
11:09 Hopefully the sun will be out.
11:12 And well, last time we played Ramsgate, it absolutely lashed it down about two minutes into the game.
11:18 So hopefully we don't have any downfalls like that.
11:20 But if we do, we'll deal with it.
11:22 I'm sure it'll be a good day.
11:24 Well, Jordy, thank you very much for joining us today and best of luck for the weekend.
11:28 And I hope it shines nice and bright for you.
11:30 Thanks a lot, mate. Yeah, no problem at all.
11:33 Now we've reached halftime, so we're going to take a quick break.
11:35 But when we come back, there's plenty more Invictus to come, even more this week,
11:38 because the Invictus Dynamo are joining me on the sofa to talk to me about their upcoming hockey season.
11:44 Plus, we'll have this week's action replay with videos sent in by you, the KaineTV viewers.
11:49 See you in a minute.

15:07 Hello and welcome back to Invictus Sport live on KMTV.
15:11 Now, our next guest on Invictus Sport is one of the county's most prominent sport teams,
15:15 the Invictus Dynamo have been making waves in the ice hockey scene in recent years.
15:19 The team won the Southern Cup and finished fourth in their league overall.
15:23 Well, this upcoming season promises exciting action on the ice and the Dynamo kick things off,
15:29 warming up with a friendly against league champions, Streatham Redhawks.
15:33 But before we speak to them, we sent our reporter, Finn McDermott, along to the team's training on Tuesday night.
15:38 The Invictus Dynamo have been tearing up the ice since 1997
15:42 and are still going strong in the National Ice Hockey League South's top division,
15:46 an eight-team brawl that sees each team play only 28 games, meaning every point counts.
15:53 And in case you didn't know, ice hockey is played with six players, including the goalie,
15:58 the aim simply being to get the puck in the back of the net.
16:02 Last season, the Dynamo's had a mid-table finish at fourth with 14 wins,
16:07 but they'll need to change their game plan this year to catch up to main rivals Streatham Redhawks,
16:12 who finished top with 26.
16:15 Luckily for the Dynamo's, they have an early chance to prove themselves
16:18 with a pre-season friendly happening the 2nd and 3rd of September.
16:22 The Mo's don't seem content with letting the past repeat itself, however,
16:26 bringing on eight new signings across the board and bringing home veteran defender Danny Scott,
16:32 who made his Dynamo's debut in the 2006 season and also was an under-20s Team GB representative.
16:40 Let's see how the players are feeling for the upcoming season.
16:43 Describe how you think the season is going to go in three words.
16:46 Three words? It's going to be exciting, tough, but good. We're going to have a good season.
16:57 Fast, physical, good.
17:01 Ambitious, excited, eager.
17:05 Wins, physical and brotherhood.
17:15 Well, with that confidence, it doesn't look like the Dynamo's will go down without a fight.
17:19 Finn McDermott came to the wall.
17:23 Now I'm joined by head coach of the Dynamo's, Carl Lennon, and Captain Harrison Lill as well.
17:30 Thank you very much for joining us. We saw some brilliant action there of your training session on Tuesday.
17:34 I've got to ask, when you have your summer break, your off-season, how do you wind down?
17:39 What do you get up to?
17:41 It doesn't feel, for me as a coach, it stops, quite honestly.
17:44 The first thing is we're starting the preparation for the next season,
17:47 so bringing the players in and making sure that we get the right people.
17:50 We had some obvious changes that happened, basically, because some people went off to university,
17:56 some people retired and a few things like that.
17:59 Then it's recruiting. We still skate every week as a team, just to keep our hand in, I guess.
18:05 Then, before you know it, summer's finished and August is around and we're starting our trainings with the team,
18:11 which we've done now for the last two weeks.
18:14 Getting ready in preparation for what's to come.
18:16 I was going to ask, how do you prepare for the season?
18:18 You've got this friendly happening this weekend. How does that play into the preparations?
18:24 First off, it's two sessions a week, getting the guys on the ice.
18:28 A) Getting familiar with each other as well, because of course there are some new players.
18:32 Then, of course, we have the games this weekend.
18:34 That makes a big difference for us to test ourselves against a very strong opposition.
18:40 Then we've got a couple of weeks after that to really hone things in
18:44 before we start the season against Solent on the 16th, I think it is.
18:48 Fantastic. I'll come to you then, Harrison.
18:50 Talk to me about your captioning the team now. How did it all start with your love for ice hockey?
18:56 I actually watched the films, the Mighty Ducks. I don't know if you've seen them.
19:00 I started doing that and then went to my local rink, which is the one at Gillingham.
19:04 I progressed up through the levels and from a young age, even watching Carl as a player,
19:10 I had aspirations to play for the Dynamos. Here I am. I'm here now.
19:15 You've got quite a few of the guys in the team as well, from the local community.
19:20 Yes, we have some in the region of 15 or 16 players that are Kent-based.
19:25 It's even gone as far as our import. A Danish guy who signed for us for the first time this year,
19:29 he's in Eastmoreland. We're literally a very much home-grown, focused club.
19:35 That's from top to bottom. The Evicted Junior system is fantastic.
19:38 We've had great connections with them and also with our other team, the Mustangs, too,
19:43 which we have a few guys featuring from that team as well during the season.
19:47 It's one big family and that helps us be stronger, I think, quite honestly.
19:51 In terms of facilities, I suppose we're quite lucky with what we've got here in Gillingham.
19:55 I suppose everybody in the Medway area, I knew when I grew up around here,
19:59 it was Friday night, you go ice skating. That was what everyone did at school.
20:03 But ice hockey is not really something we tend to hear about on the national level.
20:07 Is this like a little pocket here in Medway where that's not the case?
20:13 I think we're a little bit detached from the rest of the rinks around the country.
20:17 What you find is they tend to have clusters in certain cities.
20:21 So it does feel like that, absolutely.
20:24 For me, I grew up around it. My mum worked in the rink when I was a kid
20:28 and grew up playing hockey from the age of eight or nine.
20:31 Then, of course, now I'm back involved with the coaching part of it.
20:34 It's almost been part of my fabric, really, quite honestly.
20:38 But, yes, it's a unique sport. It's a sport that takes complete dedication
20:44 because there's a lot of skills that you have to learn.
20:47 It's something you learn over time, right? It doesn't happen just overnight.
20:51 My son is now in the under-10s and he's really just putting it all together
20:57 and figuring it all out. It takes a while, really.
21:00 Yes, where it all begins.
21:02 I wanted to ask as well, then, going into the season ahead,
21:06 you've got quite a few fixtures coming up. I actually have the list here.
21:10 You've got league games, cup games, double in one weekend.
21:14 It must take quite the strain out of you.
21:16 What's it like going through the season?
21:19 It's quite gruelling. Monday mornings, you're feeling it,
21:23 but you get used to it very quick.
21:26 Even if you compare it to the NHL, they play three or four games a week.
21:30 They'll have morning skates before games, games 60 minutes, roll-on, roll-off.
21:35 So you're on and off, on and off, 45 seconds, come off, recover, go again.
21:39 It's played at top intensity, very physical, very fast,
21:43 and you have to be aware of what's going on.
21:46 This is from a complete outsider perspective, you have to forgive me.
21:49 It looked really cold in there. You have to keep up with the temperatures.
21:52 How does that affect your preparation with the body as well?
21:55 You must be really hot in all the gear, but I can imagine the change in temperature,
22:00 you've got to look after the muscles.
22:02 Yes, so we wear under-armour, skin layers.
22:06 They're actually to keep you cool because with all the gear and the moving around,
22:10 you'll be sweating in seconds.
22:12 So thank God it's cold at times because otherwise we'll be overheating.
22:17 We can see some of the guys on the screen now working together.
22:21 We were talking a bit before we went live about how you do your training at 10 o'clock at night.
22:26 Not your choice, just how things work in the rink, and that's absolutely fine.
22:29 But in all that dedication, you must be quite a close-knit group.
22:33 What's the team dynamic like in that respect?
22:37 It's good because we've all grown up together, a lot of us.
22:41 As you play through the age groups, you support the younger age groups, the older age groups.
22:46 So for example, if you were under 14, you'd probably be looking at the 18s, the 16s, the 12s, the 10s.
22:51 Every team in their own age group has one or two players that you probably know in time
22:57 will probably play for the Dynamos. You end up spending a lot of time with them.
23:03 They train up, you train down to get more ice time to improve.
23:07 There are players in the team that I've known pretty much the whole time I've been playing.
23:12 We heard from one of the players there, and one of their three words to describe the upcoming season,
23:15 they said 'brotherhood'. It seems like that's absolutely true.
23:18 Let's talk about the season ahead. Brilliant success.
23:21 We've got your trophy here from last season.
23:24 We've got the coach and the captain here.
23:27 What are you telling the rest of the team going into this season?
23:30 How do you transition from a fairly successful one last time out into a brand new one this time?
23:34 For me, I've said it a few times in different outlets, we're in the game of self-improvement.
23:40 Every week we want to be better, every training session we want to be better.
23:44 That will help us close the gap to where we want to be.
23:46 The club has quite a rich history, 20 trophies in 25 years of its existence.
23:51 We want to make sure we are adding more of those where we can.
23:55 We were lucky to do that last year, and that luck came from the hard work we put in.
23:59 Brilliant. Very quickly, we've got to move on.
24:02 I just want to ask both of you, have you got a highlight, an upcoming fixture that you can name that you're most looking forward to?
24:07 Maybe the Streatham or Chelmsford games, local derbies, the top of the table clashes.
24:14 They'll probably be the highlight ones if you're going to come watch.
24:17 And yourself quickly as coach?
24:18 Tomorrow's game. Let's get going.
24:21 Thank you very much for joining us. That's full time on this episode of Invicta Sport.
24:26 But just before we go, the referee has given us a few extra minutes, and that means we can bring you this week's Action Replay.
24:32 It's the segment where we invite you, the KMTV viewers, to share what sporting action you've been up to.
24:37 And here's what we've got this week.
24:38 Welcome along to this week's Action Replay.
24:41 As we slowly start to exit the summer season, let's start by taking a look at some of the water sports on offer in the county.
24:48 And what a sight we have here.
24:50 This week, these paddle boarders have delighted Canterbury visitors as they pass through the historic city gardens on the River Stour.
24:57 These sessions are organised by paddle boarding instructor Anna Maria Tubler,
25:02 who brings together anyone from beginners to veterans for some stand-up paddle boarding action through some of South East's most scenic water sports.
25:11 Next up, and this boxing grandad from North Kent showed this week that he was still able to throw some punches,
25:19 despite not entering the ring for 50 years.
25:22 Barry Gerlach, known as Baz, started boxing all the way back in 1955 at age 12,
25:29 and was given the opportunity to enter the ring by Heathfield Court Care Home's Make-A-Wish initiative.
25:35 Describing getting back into the ring, Baz said he was buzzing for the rest of the day.
25:41 Certainly wouldn't want to go up against him in a fight.
25:43 And finally, this is Carol Reeves, a rapid response paramedic from Dartford,
25:48 who most days gets to her patients in an average of six minutes.
25:52 This week she traded her London Ambulance uniform for some Lycra and got into the top 20 at the UCI Gran Fondo Cycling World Championships.
26:02 A huge congratulations to her.
26:05 That's a wrap on this week's Action Replay.
26:08 And don't forget, if you want to appear on screen in next week's Action Replay,
26:12 just make sure to send in all your clips and pictures.
26:18 Well don't forget, if you want to appear in next week's Action Replay, then you can tag us on social media @kmtvkent
26:24 or you can send us an email at sport@kmtv.co.uk.
