Thousands of games are now playable thanks to Tesla's debut of Steam integration within its Model S and Model X electric vehicles.
Many were surprised when Tesla announced earlier this year that it intended to go as far as integrating Valve's Steam, an online video game store and distribution platform, in its vehicles, despite the fact that Tesla has invested heavily in integrating video games into its in-car entertainment system over the past few years.
The announcement follows years of hints from Tesla regarding Steam and game integration, with CEO Elon Musk most recently promising a demo of the platform in August. While the demo was never released, true Steam integration has come to Tesla owners' joy.
Tesla's most recent Model S and X models with 16 GB of RAM are the only ones having Steam, but Musk just revealed plans to provide a retrofit for older models. Although the Model 3 and Model Y lack a separate GPU like the S and X, they do have Tesla's most modern AMD Ryzen processor. Tesla might at some point bring Steam to MCU 3 vehicles like the Model 3 and Y, but MCU 2 vehicles are probably not going to get this feature.
Users must download games from the library to their own computers in order to use Steam. You can use external storage devices, such as the 1 TB solid-state drive Tesla now sells for $350, or any solid-state drive, for that matter. According to Not a Tesla App, the vehicles come with an approximately 80 GB partition designated for game storage.
Despite the fact that the rear 8-inch screen may stream movies while the car is moving, gaming is only permitted on the front touchscreen of the vehicle. The front touchscreen can currently only be used to play games when the cars are in park, but Tesla might improve this in the future.
Despite the fact that games are downloaded via Wi-Fi, Tesla needs a Premium Connectivity subscription in order to access Steam. Tesla also syncs game data and Steam profiles to the Steam Cloud, which is probably one of the reasons why Premium Connectivity is used.
