A father and son captured a once-in-a-lifetime moment on a fishing trip as a pod of humpback whales suddenly rose to the surface of the water just feet away from them. Noah Prophet, 22, and Jim Prophet, 50, were fulfilling a dream trip at Knudson Cove Marina in Ketchikan, Alaska, that Jim’s late father wanted to experience but never got the chance. As the pair were out on the water on June 16, they noticed bubbles start to appear around them - a whale ‘bubble feeding technique’ Noah had only seen on the BBC’s Blue Planet series. Initially they thought the bubbles were from a single whale but as they started merging, Noah knew what was about to happen, declaring: “They are going to come up right here.” A few seconds later a pod of whales dramatically rose to the surface next to their boat, mouths wide open and collecting a huge gathering of fish. Jim and Noah revealed they were struck by the sheer power of the whales, who rocked the boat and an incredible mass of water as they breached the surface. Once the whales had submerged again, the father and son snapped back to the task at hand, realizing their fishing equipment could damage - or be damaged - by the 30-ton creatures. People in the local area admitted they spend decades hoping to see whales hundreds of yards away, Jim said, but none had been lucky to get so close to a feed - let alone capture it on video.
