00:00 As millions are finding out while diving into the likes of Elden Ring, it's the mysteries
00:03 and random payoffs that can make gaming so much fun.
00:07 Almost like a return to the days before the internet, before you could Google every last
00:10 part of a given title's secrets, open world titles or games with huge open components
00:14 to them in general can hide all sorts of dynamic encounters only a handful of players will
00:19 ever see.
00:20 I'm Scott from WotCulture.com and these are the 10 rarest events in open world video games.
00:25 Number 10, The Painted Cow. The Elder Scrolls V, Skyrim. Skyrim is home to an abundance
00:30 of strange and out of left field encounters. It could take up ten whole spots by itself
00:35 thanks to the sheer amount of content on offer. Let's take a closer look at two across this
00:40 list though, starting with the Painted Cow.
00:42 This event has no known way to get triggered, so you'll need some blind luck on your side.
00:46 You'll know that you're about to witness the encounter when you see a farmer leading a
00:50 painted cow towards a giant's camp. When spoken to, the farmer will say he's offering the
00:54 cow to the giants in order to protect the rest of his livestock. This encounter also
00:58 has multiple endings, unlike other NPC encounters in the game. Most have a fixed narrative that
01:03 won't change, but here there are two endings, and in one we see the giants reject the cow
01:07 and kill the farmer, the cow actually escaping. The other has the giants accept the cow and
01:12 allow the farmer to leave peacefully. The cow doesn't get eaten and instead goes on
01:16 to live with the giants in perfect happiness. Until you stop monitoring what's going on
01:20 anyway.
01:21 And finally, the bad, bad ending. Dying Light 2. Obvious spoilers for Dying Light 2. The
01:26 sequel to Techland's open world masterpiece brings back the fun and thrill of parkouring
01:30 across a luscious cityscape, along with the joy of slicing and dicing your way through
01:34 those zombie hordes. It also has multiple branching story paths, and several endings
01:39 to try and obtain. One of the more elusive endings requires you make a lot of wrong choices
01:43 during specific events across your playthrough. This awful ending shows the city of Velador
01:48 devastated by the launch of some missiles that you failed to stop. Luan is dead, Hakon
01:52 is dead and Mia is also dead. Topping it all off, if you side with Juan till the end, he
01:57 decides to hide away from civilisation, hoarding all the food and supplies he can get his hands
02:02 on, leaving any survivors to starve and waste away. What does your main character Aiden
02:06 do? Well, nothing. He just leaves the city and goes back to being a pilgrim.
02:10 If for some reason you want this horrific ending, just follow these simple steps at
02:14 key moments in the game. Firstly, kill Hakon in the church when the opportunity arises.
02:19 Next, give the VNC tower to the Peacekeepers, but give it to Juan instead of Jack Matt.
02:23 Don't romance Luan at any point in the game, and lastly, save Luan during X13. Congratulations,
02:29 you now get the most depressing ending in a video game since Mass Effect 2's complete
02:33 suicide mission failure.
02:36 The Normandy Drops By - No Man's Sky No Man's Sky is a video game that has certainly
02:40 come a long way from its original release in 2016. Receiving a lot of criticism for being
02:44 a half-baked title, Hello Games continuously updated and turned No Man's Sky into a game
02:49 worthy of owning, with reviewers and critics praising it profusely from 2020 onwards. Between
02:54 the dates of 18th to 31st May 2021, and then the dates of 8th to 21st December 2021, a
03:01 special themed expedition took place. Players could attempt to get a hold of Mass Effect's
03:05 SR1 Normandy as one of their frigates. Players had to play the expedition between those dates
03:10 to have even a chance of finding and owning this iconic ship. Expeditions as a mission
03:14 type offer the chance to win cosmetic rewards as you reach certain challenge milestones.
03:19 Changing every week, one of the cosmetic rewards was the Normandy itself, though to maintain
03:23 exclusivity anyone who didn't grab the ship on those specified dates can no longer acquire
03:27 it at all.
03:29 The Reaper - Persona 5 The Persona series as a whole has lots of fun
03:32 and sneakily hidden secrets, most come in the form of special bosses that will take
03:36 some finessing to find. The Reaper is one of those rare encounters, a powerful and intimidating
03:41 foe that most players will have missed on their first run through. So strong that even
03:45 high level players who have gotten good gear can be wiped out in mere seconds, caution
03:49 is a must if you wish to do battle. Even Morgana and the rest of the gang will comment on how
03:53 powerful the aura of the Reaper is when it finally rears its head. To get the Reaper
03:57 to appear, players need to meander around in mementos for quite some time, never leaving
04:02 the floor that they're on. After a good chunk of time has passed, you'll eventually
04:05 start to hear some chains rattling. This is a good sign or a bad one, depending on how
04:09 you want to view it. If the player continues to wait around, the Reaper will eventually
04:13 turn up and immediately make a beeline straight towards them. Hopefully you're ready, because
04:17 this is a supremely hard and well-hidden fight for a reason.
04:21 Dark Energy Dissertation - Mass Effect 3 One of many instances in Mass Effect 3 that
04:25 relied on specific things happening in both previous games, during Mission Citadel Medijel
04:30 Sabotage you must have spoken to and completed all of Conrad Werner's tasks. Doing so will
04:35 make Werner a potential war asset during this mission, and he'll give you access to his
04:39 Dark Energy Dissertation. Worth a whopping one whole point towards your Galactic Readiness
04:44 endgame stat. You can also snag some more points for the Galactic Readiness Meter if
04:48 you've been super diligent with your time to this point. You'll need to have finished
04:51 the following quests. Feroz Data Recovery, a fetch quest that must be completed not long
04:56 after you destroy the Thorian. UNC Asari Writings, an incredibly tedious collectible quest where
05:01 you need to find 14 writings spread throughout the galaxy and buy the Elkos Combined Armoury
05:06 Licence from a vendor. Until this point, most of these had felt pretty pointless, but beating
05:10 all three nets you an incredible boost to the dissertation in the form of four more
05:14 points. Yes, if you hadn't guessed, these amounts are arguably not worth all that effort,
05:19 but the triggering of them is certainly rare because of it.
05:22 The Ghost Ship - The Witcher 3 The Witcher 3 is a sprawling open-world game
05:26 with so much to discover. From references to Doctor Who's Weeping Angels to character
05:30 Berna Brand being found chained to a rock if Geralt gets her sentenced to death during
05:35 the story. Even rarer though is the strange instance of a ghost ship that appears at a
05:39 specific location at a specific time of day. To peek a glimpse at this eerie sight, players
05:43 will need to be roaming the seas around Skellig and Hindisfjall on the Skellige map at around
05:48 1am. If done correctly, you'll be greeted by the sight of a ghostly blue transparent
05:53 ship. However, you have to be quick as this encounter doesn't last very long, the ship
05:56 disappearing below the surface once more. This ghost ship can't be interacted with,
06:01 so just enjoy the sight for what it is - a scary random encounter on the seas of a mysteriously
06:06 dark fantasy world.
06:08 Kilburn - Final Fantasy VII The gargantuan Final Fantasy games are filled
06:12 with hidden secrets and bosses, especially strewn across their wider open-world maps.
06:16 Some secrets players may never discover unless they have a guide to hand, or are adamant
06:20 about searching every nook and cranny. Kilburn is one of those rare encounters, with the
06:24 odds of stumbling into battle with them supremely small. The zone that Kilburn spawns in is
06:29 called the Rocky Path, located within the Whirlwind Maze. Rocky Path is an area most
06:33 players will quickly breeze through due to how small it is overall, meaning this creature
06:37 is barely ever talked about. Kilburn then is a bizarre looking enemy that takes the
06:41 form of a die. It will fight the player by rolling itself and then attacking according
06:45 to whatever number it lands on. Each number correlates to a spell, such as casting fire
06:50 or ice, slowing party members down or just healing itself. All this said, fear not, as
06:54 despite being rare and looking quite intimidating, Kilburns are complete pushovers, posing very
06:59 little threat despite their rarity.
07:01 A literal vampire - Red Dead Redemption 2 From the studio that bought you the heart
07:05 inside GTA IV's Statue of Happiness, it's no surprise Red Dead Redemption 2 is also
07:10 filled to the brim with random secrets. One rare encounter comes in the form of a vampire,
07:15 also known as the Saint Denis Vampire. To find him, you must undergo the task of finding
07:19 five pieces of mysterious writing that line the walls of Saint Denis. These can be found
07:23 in any order, after which Arthur or John will jot down a location in their journal, in the
07:28 guise of a pentagram. The location itself is in an alley, just south of the cathedral,
07:32 with players needing to go there between 12 and 1am. Once in the right spot, you'll be
07:36 met with a grisly sight, the vampire drinking the blood of his newest victim. This particular
07:41 creature of the night is surprised that somebody managed to find him, and will be hostile from
07:45 the get-go, threatening you to leave or you'll be his next victim. If you stay and fight,
07:49 well good luck, as it's a one-hit kill should you get hit by any attack. Succeed though
07:53 and you'll be awarded the incredibly rare ornate dagger, as well as some stringy meat
07:58 and two bat wings. Tasty.
07:59 Number 2 - Maik the Liar The Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim
08:03 A character most Skyrim players will have missed, Maik the Liar has quite the reputation
08:07 amongst fans of Elder Scrolls overall. However, he's still one of the hardest encounters
08:11 to stumble across, mainly as there's no correlation on how to get him to pop up, similar
08:16 to the Painted Cow. This mischievous Khajiit wanders around spreading hilarious misinformation
08:20 and appears as an easter egg for completionists. Maik has appeared in every Elder Scrolls game
08:24 since Morrowind, where this devilish feline made one hell of an impact. Thankfully, Maik
08:29 is harmless and does nothing more than make ludicrous comments about people and certain
08:33 situations, ranging from combat tips about trying to fight with two swords, in-jokes
08:37 about how Winterhold was once referenced as a city before Skyrim, and much more.
08:41 And at number 1 - Morden's Soulless Lives Mass Effect 3
08:45 Finishing this off, let's head back to Mass Effect 3 with one of the rarest encounters
08:48 in the game - Morden's Soulless surviving the events on Tachanka. Getting this to happen
08:52 requires very specific actions to be taken at key points across the trilogy, as well
08:56 as having a high enough Renegade skill to pull off the necessary dialogue options.
09:00 So where to start? Well, firstly you're going to need to go back to Mass Effect 1
09:04 and have Rex killed on Vermeier. Second, during Morden's loyalty mission in Mass Effect
09:08 2, you'll need to destroy all of Malon's data. Third, you must tell no one about the
09:12 STG sabotage to the Shroud Tower. Lastly, the only way to stop Morden dispensing the
09:17 cure in the moment is to use the Renegade option, which takes quite a few points to
09:21 get in the first place. If you're successful in all of these areas, you'll manage to
09:24 convince Morden that it's for the greater good to not dispense the cure. Morden will
09:28 then insist he needs to go into hiding, pretending that he died while curing the genophage. Morden
09:33 will become a war asset for you to use in the endgame, avoiding death but never being
09:37 seen again. And those are our picks for the rarest events
09:40 in open world games. Let me know your favourites down in the comments below and please subscribe
