00:00 The Cowboy G-Men in Chippewa Indians, starring Russell Hayden as Pat Gallagher and Jackie
00:08 Coogan as Stoney Crockett.
00:11 Here in northern Wisconsin dwell the people of the peacemaker and giver of corn, the legendary
00:16 hero Hiawatha.
00:17 For 300 years, this has been the home of the Chippewa, a peaceful tribe of fishermen, hunters,
00:22 and farmers.
00:23 In 1880, green gold was discovered in Wisconsin, timber. Some of the most valuable stands were
00:30 at Lac du Flambeau on the Chippewa lands. The crisis came in 1886 when lumber operators
00:36 attempted to force the Chippewa from their lands.
00:41 Government agents Pat Gallagher and Stoney Crockett were placed on special assignment
00:45 to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs and sent to Lac du Flambeau.
00:54 Is the squaw of the house in?
01:23 Hey, Stoney!
01:30 Sweet!
01:34 What's the matter, Stoney? Getting into some target practice?
01:42 No, an Indian grabbed me when I looked in that teepee.
01:45 Are you sure?
01:46 Sure I'm sure.
01:47 Well, let's investigate.
01:48 After you!
01:53 Stoney, there's no one in there.
01:59 It's funny, isn't it? You know that Indian might have scalped me?
02:02 Don't you think it's a little late for that?
02:05 What are you doing here, Pat? The wire I got said to meet you at the Indian agency at Lac
02:09 du Flambeau.
02:10 Yeah, I know. I went there. The agency's boarded up and the agents disappeared. And every teepee
02:15 I visited was as empty as this one.
02:18 What do you think it means?
02:19 Well, I think the Chippewa's getting ready to move across the Mississippi, like the other
02:22 Wisconsin tribes.
02:23 And we got here just in time.
02:25 Yeah. You bring the documents?
02:26 Oh, yeah. I got them right here.
02:27 Oh, good. You keep them.
02:28 All right.
02:29 How do you want to play this?
02:31 Well, I think we'll tell everybody we're here to check on the lumber footage. We won't expose
02:34 the document until the right time.
02:36 Undercover, huh?
02:37 I think it's easier, don't you?
02:39 Sure.
02:45 Okay.
02:56 Lac du Flambeau was founded by the French fur traders about 1634. They named it after
03:01 the flaming birch bark torches carried by the Indians. Now it seemed deserted, not a
03:07 soul in sight.
03:17 That door wasn't open when I was in town before.
03:19 No?
03:20 Let's have a look.
03:26 It was a pretty crude little school, but it was a big step forward for the Indian children.
03:30 Apparently, it was closed along with everything else in town.
03:38 Hey, Pat. It's cute, isn't it?
03:40 What?
03:42 Put that down.
03:44 Yes, ma'am.
03:45 Now, would you explain why are you here?
03:49 Well, my name's Gallagher, miss, and I'm Crockett. We saw the door open, so we just walked in.
03:56 Are you the schoolmarm, ma'am?
03:58 I was.
03:59 But our school is closed, and we had just opened it.
04:02 Oh, you know, I never had a pretty schoolmarm like that.
04:06 What's your name, miss?
04:08 I was named for Hiawatha's mother, Winona.
04:11 Winona. That's a pretty name. You belong to the Chippewa tribe, then.
04:16 Then maybe you can tell us what's going on. The schoolhouse closed, and the Indian agents
04:21 disappeared.
04:22 Our people are forced to sell their lands. They're moving across the Mississippi. By the
04:27 new moon, the Chippewa will be gone.
04:30 Oh, you don't want to do that. By then...
04:33 The Chippewas have always lived here. Why do they want to leave?
04:37 We do not want to leave. They tell us after the new moon, only white men can own land
04:42 here. We asked the governor for help, but he told us Indians were a government matter.
04:48 Then the Chippewas are selling their lands.
04:50 Before they take them from us. Even our little school. It's the first we ever had.
04:56 Well, that's a shame.
04:58 Yes, it is. Look, Winona, the government doesn't want to take your land away from you. They
05:05 want to help you people. That's why they sent us.
05:08 You are sent by the government?
05:10 Sure are, ma'am.
05:12 We were warned you would come, but we have a few more days. Until then, get out! Get
05:17 out of my school!
05:19 Get out, Governor!
05:22 [Gasps]
05:24 Stoney and I covered the country. We learned someone was anxious to get the Chippewa off
05:32 of their lands by the first of the month. The Indians had been tipped off that we were
05:36 from the government, and no one would talk to us. Finally, we found ourselves in the
05:40 office of the Bartlett Lumber Company, talking to the biggest timber operator in the state,
05:46 Oliver Bartlett.
05:48 Yes, I'd like to get the Chippewa timber concession. Who wouldn't? Some of the best stands of
05:53 pine in Wisconsin.
05:55 How long have you been trying to get this timber, Mr. Bartlett?
05:57 Well, ever since I heard the Indians wanted to move out west, I made them a good cash
06:01 offer, but they turned it down.
06:04 Then you've given up the idea?
06:10 No, no, not quite. A half-breed hunter and guide by the name of Tom Careful came in to
06:15 see me about a week ago. Said he could persuade the Chippewa to take my offer. So naturally,
06:21 I told him to go ahead.
06:23 Why should they sell to him and not to you?
06:28 Well, maybe because he has Indian blood in him, understands them better. If he can get
06:33 that timber for me, I don't care what he does to get it.
06:37 Maybe you should, Mr. Bartlett. The Indians have lived in these forests a long time. It's
06:42 their home. They don't want to leave. There's something more important than just cutting
06:46 lumber.
06:47 I know, but it's just good business for me.
06:50 Is it for anybody else?
06:52 Where can we find this half-breed Tom Careful?
06:55 He lives in a little cabin between here and the Indian village. I'm afraid you'll find
07:00 him pretty close mouthed.
07:02 Maybe we can teach him the sign language, eh, Stoney?
07:05 Come on, Mr. Bartlett.
07:07 Goodbye.
07:08 Good day, sir.
07:09 Goodbye, boys.
07:11 Now, there's a real humanitarian.
07:14 Yeah. Funny thing, Stoney.
07:16 What?
07:17 Ever since we got into town, I've had a feeling we're being watched.
07:20 By the Indians?
07:21 By somebody. You know, I've had this feeling before, and it's never failed. Someplace out
07:26 there, there's eyes watching us.
07:28 Well, if the Indians saw us talking with Bartlett, they're sure to be against us.
07:33 Yeah. Say, I still think that Indian girl would help us if she could.
07:38 Why don't you ride back into town and have a talk with her?
07:41 That's a pretty good idea, because she's awful pretty.
07:44 I thought you'd like that.
07:46 Well, I see you.
07:47 Well, I'm going to look up this Tom Careful. I'll meet you back at the teepee later.
07:51 Right.
07:53 [music]
08:21 You're one of them government men.
08:23 Might be. I'd like to talk to you. Ask you a few questions about the Chippewas.
08:29 I got just one thing to say to you. Get out of here. Now.
08:37 But I don't think you understand.
08:38 It's you don't understand. I said get, and get fast.
08:44 Or what?
08:46 Or this.
08:49 [music]
09:17 [gunshot]
09:25 Like I said, I'd like to ask you a few questions.
09:28 Like what?
09:29 What makes you think the Indians would sell to you after they turned Bartlett down?
09:34 Because I know them better, and I'm half Chippewa myself.
09:37 That's no good. Keep talking.
09:40 I just reminded them that they have to be off land by new moon.
09:44 If they don't sell by then, they only get nothing.
09:47 And they believed you?
09:48 Sure.
09:49 What made you think they'd sell the land to you?
09:52 Because of Noco Wib.
09:56 Who's Noco Wib?
09:58 Medicine man. He'd tell people to wait. That great spirit will save their homes.
10:05 So, they wait. Across big waters.
10:09 Where can I find this medicine man?
10:12 He's teepeed on the way to Chippewa Village.
10:16 That's better.
10:19 Thanks for the information.
10:22 [music]
10:32 Hey, Tony!
10:34 [music]
10:41 Hi, Tony.
10:42 Get anything out of Careful?
10:43 Yeah, after a little persuasion.
10:45 Oh, you mean Careful got careless?
10:47 How about you?
10:48 Well, the girl is gone and the school is all locked up.
10:51 Yeah, we've got to find this medicine man.
10:53 I understand he's got a lot of influence with the tribe.
10:56 Just so he doesn't influence them to go on the war path.
10:59 You know, Tony, I've got that feeling again.
11:02 You mean about somebody watching us?
11:05 Yeah. Listen.
11:09 [music]
11:24 Hey, Pat.
11:27 This place gives me the willies.
11:29 Don't tell me you're superstitious.
11:33 [music]
11:42 Well, nobody in there.
11:44 No, nobody but the evil spirits.
11:49 Nothing.
11:50 What do you mean, after telling them so long?
11:53 He just wanted to be sure that we were on his side.
11:55 Oh, nice to know that.
11:57 It took a few years off my life worrying about him.
12:03 What's he saying, Pat?
12:04 He says his people have defied the great spirit.
12:07 They moved to new lands across the great waters.
12:10 That means they're selling out, huh?
12:11 Look that way.
12:18 His people have deserted the prayers and remedies of their ancestors.
12:22 They've drank the white man's cure and fallen down.
12:25 They drank the white man's curse around Pottawatomie's uncle.
12:28 Ask him about this.
12:36 He says the man with the bottles is still around.
12:38 I knew Zerbo would do most anything for a silver cartwheel,
12:42 but I never figured he'd sell to the Indians.
12:44 Well, he must be still around, Stoney.
12:46 You'd better pick him up.
12:47 We'll have the Indians identify him.
12:49 You know, I've been wanting to put him in jail for a long time,
12:52 but now that I'm actually going to do it--
12:55 Yeah, I know. You hate to do it, don't you?
12:57 Yeah.
12:58 Guess you've got to take the good and the bad.
13:10 I went to the deserted Chippewa village and found no one.
13:14 Now the drums began, and I tried to follow them,
13:17 but they seemed to be coming from all directions.
13:20 No matter where I went, I couldn't shake the sensation of being followed.
13:26 Now I was sure of it.
13:28 I'd caught a glimpse of him.
13:38 So it's you that's been followed.
13:39 Let me go!
13:41 Let me go!
13:42 You promised not to bite.
13:45 All right, what's the idea?
13:47 Have you not heard the drums calling our people across the big waters?
13:52 Well, that's why the Indian village is empty.
13:59 What's the matter?
14:00 The ring.
14:02 Oh, that.
14:04 The Shawnee chief gave it to me when he made me a blood brother.
14:07 I'm one-fourth Shawnee, you know.
14:10 The Shawnee are of our blood.
14:12 Yes, I know.
14:13 The Shawnees and the Chippewas all descend from the Algonquins.
14:17 The ring symbol is like ours.
14:21 How can you be false to your blood in the symbol?
14:26 I'm not, believe me.
14:28 I want to help your people.
14:30 You've got to trust me.
14:32 I want to trust you.
14:35 You can.
14:37 You know, we're in a sacred place here.
14:42 The Glade of Hidden Rock.
14:45 The Glade of Hidden Rock?
14:47 It is written that when a man and a maiden enter here with hatred in their hearts,
14:52 they will be doomed forever to loneliness.
14:57 I check my hatred outside.
14:59 Mine too has vanished.
15:01 The magic of the glade.
15:03 You know, you're the prettiest Indian princess I ever saw.
15:09 I must go.
15:11 I've got to go.
15:13 Wait.
15:14 I'll see you tomorrow at the schoolhouse.
15:20 Would you wear this to prove that I'm friendly?
15:31 All right, I don't want any more trouble.
15:33 Now look.
15:34 Now look, just talk up and loud and clear.
15:38 But I tell you, sir, I didn't sell firewater to the Indians.
15:46 Zerbo is not firewater.
15:48 It is a perfectly useless or a harmless mixture if used externally.
15:55 Yeah, but the only trouble is the Indians can't read the label.
15:58 Even internally, sir.
16:00 The formula is merely peppermint leaves, licorice.
16:04 And alcohol.
16:05 Oh, no, sir.
16:06 Merely a little swamp oil.
16:08 I'll show you the ingredients.
16:10 They're in my pack.
16:13 May I go, sir?
16:14 Yeah.
16:25 See if that stuff really is harmless.
16:40 What happened?
16:41 What happened?
16:42 [laughing]
16:49 Oh, you are so right, sir.
16:51 Technically, it is firewater.
16:55 Oh.
17:07 [gunshot]
17:20 [gunshot]
17:30 [gunshot]
17:38 [music]
17:52 They got along.
17:53 That's one way they'll track us.
17:54 Put it down.
18:07 Sure burned that bald spot, didn't you?
18:13 Oh, what a sight.
18:17 Hey, that's Pat's horse.
18:24 Go on, Zipper, old boy.
18:31 Something must have happened to Pat.
18:33 Well, gee, I sure hope you find him.
18:35 Don't worry, Zipper will take me right to him.
18:37 Oh, by the way, what size shoe do you wear?
18:39 A size seven, sir.
18:40 Let me see that here just a minute.
18:42 Thank you very much.
18:43 What are you doing there?
18:44 What are you doing?
18:45 Nothing.
18:46 I just want to see that you're very comfortable.
18:47 Give me this one down here.
18:48 There you are.
18:49 Now, don't go away, kid, and watch out for the Indians.
18:53 Indians?
18:54 But Stoney, you can't do this to me.
18:56 Don't flip a bottle.
19:14 Hey, Pat, you going to be all right?
19:16 Hi, Stoney.
19:18 What happened to you?
19:20 I was ambushed by a couple of Indians.
19:22 After all these years.
19:24 Yeah, I guess they're after the documents.
19:26 You know, it's a good thing you gave them back to me.
19:29 Sure is.
19:30 We've got to post those by Wednesday.
19:32 Let's head back to that teepee.
19:34 All right.
19:35 You feel all right?
19:36 Yeah, I'm all right.
19:37 Come on, take it easy.
19:39 Hey, partner.
19:41 You're sure they're here to cheat us?
19:43 Yes, unless we can stop them from posting those documents.
19:47 Once it's posted, the Chippewas will leave their homes,
19:50 and they won't get a cent for them either.
19:52 But if you can only get that document,
19:54 Mr. Bartlett will pay your people a fair price.
19:57 How could anyone be so low?
19:59 Just today.
20:00 When will you see him again?
20:02 He's coming here in the morning.
20:04 Very well.
20:05 You know what to do.
20:06 We leave the how up to you.
20:09 Early the next morning, the last day of the month,
20:12 we took Zerbo and rode into Loch de Flambeau,
20:14 where I was supposed to meet Winona.
20:16 Give me those documents, Stoney.
20:18 I might want to show them to Winona.
20:19 What are you trying to do, be teacher's pet?
20:22 Good morning.
20:38 Oh, so that's the way it is.
20:46 At least you're still wearing my ring.
20:48 You said yesterday you came to help us.
20:52 That's right.
20:53 How?
20:55 Well, I can't tell you just now, but...
20:58 I see.
21:00 Good. Then you do understand.
21:02 Will you come with us to the Indian village now?
21:05 In a moment.
21:08 Oh.
21:09 Here, I'll get it.
21:11 [music]
21:29 Hey, Pat.
21:30 Not again.
21:31 Yeah.
21:32 Who was it, a little Indian girl?
21:33 Must have.
21:34 Oh.
21:35 Stoney, the documents.
21:38 They're gone.
21:40 Well, I guess our little Pocahontas is souring on us.
21:43 Zerbo saw her going out the back door, heading for Bartlett's.
21:46 Bartlett's?
21:47 Yeah.
21:48 Maybe we can overtake her.
21:49 Yeah.
21:50 But, sir, you promised me a chance to prove my innocence.
21:52 Yeah, well, get yourself a character witness.
21:54 I know a good character witness, but I can't get him for 90 days.
21:57 What's he doing?
21:58 90 days.
21:59 Oh, get the medicine man.
22:00 Meet us at Bartlett's.
22:01 Come on, Pat.
22:03 [music]
22:27 Here she comes.
22:28 [music]
22:33 You got the documents?
22:38 Thank you.
22:43 I was right.
22:44 We'd never have gotten those timberlands without this.
22:47 What do you mean?
22:48 This makes lack to flambeau a Chippewa reservation as of tomorrow.
22:52 But only if the Chippewa are living there and they're pulling out tonight.
22:55 But you said --
22:56 We told you a little white lie, but you'll be well rewarded for what you've done.
23:00 No.
23:01 I will tell my people.
23:02 You will never get our lands.
23:04 [music]
23:11 Looks like we'll have to get rid of her as well as this.
23:15 I think I know how to do it.
23:18 [music]
23:34 All our troubles go up in smoke.
23:36 Let's get out of here.
23:38 [music]
23:52 Hey, Pat, that place is on fire.
23:54 It's the government men.
23:58 We're lost in here.
23:59 We've got to make a break for it.
24:01 Now!
24:02 [music]
24:12 [gunshots]
24:22 [music]
24:38 Hold it, Barney.
24:40 All right, where's those documents?
24:42 Where's the girl?
24:43 Hey, Pat, look!
24:44 Keep your eye on him.
24:45 Hey, stop it, you!
24:47 [music]
24:51 You, careful!
24:52 Move over here!
24:53 Pat!
24:54 [music]
24:57 Don't you make a move.
24:58 The government wants you for fraud and attempted murder.
25:01 [music]
25:07 They lied.
25:08 They said you were our enemy.
25:10 I understand.
25:11 They did not destroy the documents.
25:14 Pat, do you mind?
25:16 Mind?
25:17 [music]
25:20 In 1887, by terms of the General Allotment Act,
25:23 the United States Congress created the Chippewa Indian Reserve at Lac du Flambeau.
25:28 To this day, the people of Hiawatha live peacefully on the shores of their Wisconsin lakes.
25:34 [music]
25:55 [BLANK_AUDIO]
