Woman plans overseas daytrip for best friend's birthday - for less than a train ticket to London

  • last year
A woman and her friend flew to Northern Ireland for a day trip and it cost less than a train ticket to London.

Rebecca Kellett, 37, surprised her friend Lauren Priest, 31, with the overseas trip which included a picnic and a visit to the filming locations of "Game of Thrones."

Rebecca and Lauren made the decision to stop buying each other gifts for their birthdays and plan day trips instead.

Rebecca, who's the managing director of her own company, secured flights for £24 each and hired a car for £26.

She also spent £18 on parking, £15 for the picnic and £16 for fuel.

In total, the trip cost £123 for the pair.

According to TrainPal, on August 29, the average price for a train ticket from Manchester to London is £82.8 per person.

Rebecca and Lauren flew from Manchester into Belfast at 8:45 am and picked up their hire car at 10 am.

A video shows the pair galivanting around the world-famous Giant's Causeway and the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge on the northern and eastern coast of the country.

After seeing the sights they sat down for a picnic with an assortment of classic snack food and caught a flight back home at 9 pm.

Rebecca, from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, said: "Me and Lauren always find days out for each other instead of gifts for birthdays so this was her birthday day out.

"We did a tour of the filming locations of 'Games of Thrones'. "e hired a car for one day and booked flights using Skyscanner.

"The flights were £24 each and car hire was £26 for the day and we took a ‘fit to fly’ picnic."

Rebecca is known for her cost-cutting holidays and has gone viral in the past for her solo travelling on a budget with her vlog "NorthernBlondeAbroad".

Before she's managed to snag £15 return flights to Portugal, £11 flights to Italy and a family holiday to Center Parcs in Belgium saving £600.

The footage was captured on August 21.

00:00 I decided to fly my best mate to Belfast for a one-day road trip to visit the filming locations of Game of Thrones and have a little picnic.
00:06 Here's how I made a picnic that was fit to fly.
00:08 So I picked a few of her favourite things, 'cause it is her birthday after all.
00:12 She absolutely loves cherry bakewells, corn scotch eggs obviously for me, pork pies for her.
00:16 No picnic's complete without a selection of crackers.
00:19 Then some of this antipasto selection, which Lauren absolutely loves.
00:22 And then we've got scones, but you can't have scones without...
00:26 ...cotted cream. Now I had to get creative because you're only allowed a certain size of liquids on planes.
00:31 So these are all the things that I'm taking, they're classed as liquids.
00:34 So I've had to make sure that they're under 3.3 oz or 100 ml, 'cause that's all you're allowed.
00:39 Then no picnic is complete without cheese.
00:41 This one is classed as a liquid, so that'll go in one of my clear bags.
00:44 Then we've got some smoked cheese, some cheese with a quito peppers, and I think that's a Wensleydale.
00:49 And then I also bought these off Amazon.
00:51 These are under 100 ml, which means I can take these ice blocks with me and they're so bloody cute, look at that.
00:56 So as you all probably know, liquids have to go in plastic bags.
00:59 Look how perfectly it all fits in my little plastic bag.
01:02 I'm so happy with it.
01:04 So I'm also taking my cabin mags and my dock and bay picnic blanket, and a couple of picnic plates as well.
01:10 And then I'm also gonna put in some of the dried goods in there as well, like the crackers and all the bits and pieces.
01:15 Then all the cold stuff is gonna go in this insulated bag, which you're allowed to take on the flight too.
01:20 So we've got one bag each, and these bags are free to fly with because they will just go under the seat.
01:25 So follow along to see our Wander adventure.
