00:00 From calorie counts to portion sizes, we wanted to find out all the differences between Lay's
00:04 in the US and in China.
00:06 This is Food Wars.
00:10 In China, Lay's chips come in 14, that's right, 14 sizes.
00:16 Coming in at our smallest chip bag, 12 grams, 23, 40, there's a 45 but we couldn't get that,
00:24 60, 65, 70, 75 grams, 80, 90, 104, 116, 135 and 220 grams for our largest chip packet.
00:39 In the US, Lay's come in six sizes.
00:41 There's only four, let me explain.
00:43 Down here, the smallest bag is the multi-pack 28 gram bag, the vending machine bag.
00:48 Move one up to a 2.625 ounce or 74.4 grams, so specific.
00:55 Then in the middle, which I couldn't find, is a 2.75 ounce or 78 gram bag.
00:59 In the middle here, I mean, this is the one you see everyone, the eight ounce or 226 gram
01:04 bag.
01:05 In the middle here, missing is the family size, too tragic for the American family.
01:09 They don't get to see the 10.5 ounce or 297.6 gram bag.
01:15 But of course, the size that we always have, old reliable, the biggest size, the party
01:20 size, 368 grams.
01:23 That means the biggest bag in the US is 67.3% larger than the biggest bag in China.
01:29 That's not the size that matters, Joe.
01:31 It's no, wait, no, actually is the size.
01:34 In the US, our flavored bags weigh less than the original flavored bags.
01:38 Take this bag of barbecued Lay's.
01:41 It weighs 7.75 ounces compared to the eight ounces you get with the original bag.
01:47 Same price, but less product.
01:50 Back in 2014, PepsiCo claimed, "The reason for the slightly higher price per ounce for
01:55 flavored chips is the added seasoning."
01:58 Interesting.
01:59 So, Lay's, can you explain to me why this bag of lightly salted chips is 7.75 or 7 3/4
02:10 like the flavored bags and not eight ounces of the regular salted bags where all this
02:15 has for seasoning is less salt than the original?
02:20 Hey, Lay's, where's my salt?
02:23 A 28 gram bag in the US supposedly contains 15 chips according to Lay's website.
02:30 Let's see how accurate this is.
02:31 I hate doing this.
02:32 I really hate doing this.
02:33 We don't have a 28 gram bag, so I'll count the number of chips in a 40 gram packet as
02:38 a comparison.
02:39 It's 1.43 times heavier.
02:43 Is it just as plentiful?
02:45 Four.
02:46 Ten.
02:47 Eleven.
02:48 I'm running out of big chips now.
02:50 It's all the small ones.
02:51 That seems like a lot more than 15.
02:54 Closer to like 21.
02:56 That was very generous of you, Lay's.
02:58 I see the finish line.
02:59 That's roughly 24.
03:01 And oh, 25 chips in a 40 gram packet.
03:08 Again, I'm already incredibly impressed at the number of chips they managed to fit into
03:11 this bag, but they really could have put more in there.
03:15 And we all know that Lay's chip bags are mostly filled with air anyway.
03:19 It's actually nitrogen gas, which helps preserve the chips and also acts as a cushion to stop
03:24 them from getting smashed in transit.
03:26 I mean, okay.
03:28 But what is the air to chip ratio you ask?
03:32 It's a rhetorical question.
03:33 Let's find out.
03:34 We're going to take the smallest packet that we have, the 12 grams.
03:38 So that's 533.3 milliliters.
03:39 I feel like I'm on the Food Network.
03:44 Okay, now we need to find out the volume of the chips.
03:49 15.
03:50 Our ratio is 0.028 chips to air, which makes it 2.8% chips and the rest of it is all air.
04:03 Absolutely scientifically accurate experiment yields 575 milliliters in the bag.
04:08 Let's do five bags and then we'll just get a bigger number than divide that by five because
04:14 we'll have an average.
04:15 Smart?
04:16 Great.
04:17 Oh yeah.
04:19 You guys have no idea how satisfying this is.
04:22 425 divided by five equals 85.
04:29 I forgot what it was.
04:30 Can someone do that on screen for us please?
04:32 And there's the number we've been trying to get.
04:37 Here are all the Lay's chips from China that you won't find in the US.
04:42 Here are most of the Lay's chips from the US you won't find in China.
04:47 All right, let's start with the exclusive flavors for the classic chip style.
04:51 Now these four are the most common flavors that you'll find here on the Chinese market,
04:56 beginning with Italian red meat.
04:59 Wow, it's nice and red.
05:01 So we're probably going for Bolognese sauce here.
05:05 It's not offensive, but you also can't quite place what exactly they were trying to do.
05:11 Next we have the Mexican chicken tomato.
05:15 Oh, that is delicious.
05:21 Next we have the Texas grilled barbecue flavor.
05:29 It tastes savory.
05:31 Last but not least, cucumber flavor.
05:36 Why just why?
05:39 I don't know what I'm eating.
05:41 What is this?
05:42 It's sweet.
05:43 It's refreshing.
05:44 It has an aftertaste of cucumber.
05:47 I want to ask why, but I also kind of, I'm okay with it.
05:53 It's kind of nice.
05:55 You know, I wonder if these are popular because they're foreign flavors, because we don't
05:58 know what Italian red meat or Mexican chicken tomato is supposed to taste like.
06:03 And apparently neither do you guys.
06:06 All right, let's move on to our exclusive local flavors.
06:11 The spicy crayfish, or as you guys in the US would call them, crawfish.
06:19 Yes, that smells legit.
06:23 It tastes a little bit less crayfish than it smells like crayfish.
06:26 No, no, that's good.
06:28 Oh, it's got that aftertaste.
06:30 Wow, that is pretty authentic.
06:34 Roasted cumin lamb skewer.
06:36 Hands down my all time favorite street food.
06:40 This is iconic, especially in summer.
06:43 You'll see people hanging out in the alleys with their tank top rolled up so their belly
06:48 is exposed.
06:49 We call that the Beijing bikini here.
06:51 And then there'll be holding a bunch of these skewers with meat, just ripping them off and
06:57 slamming back the beers.
06:59 Best things about China, it's street food, honestly.
07:03 No, I can see it's there.
07:07 It's not as meaty as I would like, but then look, it's a potato chip.
07:10 All right.
07:11 I think they've done pretty well.
07:12 What do we have here?
07:15 Seaweed flavor.
07:16 Roast garlic oyster.
07:19 I think they should just rename this lineup to the street food edition.
07:25 Wasabi flavor.
07:27 Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
07:32 If you finish a bag of this, block nose gone.
07:36 Fried crab.
07:43 Holy crab.
07:44 Wow, they've done really well.
07:48 Numb and spicy hot pot.
08:05 It's spicy.
08:06 I haven't got the numb yet.
08:09 Maybe I need to eat more.
08:10 The more you eat hot pot, the more the broth simmers down, the spicier it becomes.
08:17 So at the end, your hot pot is way spicier than at the start.
08:21 This feels a little bit like that right now.
08:24 Here we have another popular flavor from the south, from Sichuan.
08:29 This is roast fish.
08:31 And we've got a special flavor from a past season, truffle.
08:41 Oh, oh, oh, oh.
08:46 Maybe I'm just lowbrow.
08:47 I don't like the flavor of truffle.
08:48 It tastes like a wet forest.
08:50 No, no, thank you.
08:52 Hold these up.
08:53 We have a lot, so many exclusive flavors.
08:54 It's quite robust.
08:56 I was not able to get all of them.
08:57 So these are the ones I could find here in Southern California.
09:01 First one, salt and vinegar.
09:02 Come on, China.
09:03 I like salt and vinegar better than plain potato chips.
09:07 Sweet, southern heat barbecue.
09:11 Different than a regular barbecue.
09:13 Sweet and barbecue flavor.
09:14 I think I like these better than regular barbecue chips.
09:16 Let's compare.
09:17 Regular US barbecue.
09:20 Sweet southern heat.
09:23 These are better.
09:24 Speaking of barbecue, honey barbecue.
09:31 That's just okay.
09:32 This is not very honey-ish.
09:33 The one with the sweet is sweeter than the one with honey.
09:37 Go figure.
09:38 Oh yeah.
09:39 Cheddar and sour cream.
09:40 I mean this thing.
09:41 Top five over here.
09:46 These are really good.
09:47 We got limon flavor.
09:48 These are lime flavored chips with, I don't know who this person is.
09:52 This is a guy in Ted Lasso.
09:53 I don't know who this is.
09:54 Cezando.
09:55 Is that his name?
09:56 It's like a one.
09:57 I have no idea what.
09:58 Yeah.
09:59 What?
10:00 Lime and potato together?
10:01 Who'd have thought?
10:02 I hate pickles.
10:03 But I like dill.
10:15 But I shouldn't seem to like this.
10:18 Nope.
10:19 Ugh.
10:20 Go away forever.
10:21 Do not like dill flavored chips.
10:22 They also have flaming hot dill pickle chips.
10:25 Couldn't get my hands on a bag, but I did get my hands on a bag of just the flaming hot
10:29 chips.
10:30 Oh man.
10:31 These are really red.
10:38 Flaming hot?
10:39 Yeah.
10:40 Yep.
10:41 Spicy, yes.
10:42 Flavorful, not so much.
10:44 Ones I think I'm going to like.
10:45 Chili limon.
10:46 Not as spicy.
10:47 Way more flavorful.
10:48 Oh yeah, and the lime aftertaste.
10:50 Wow, these are fantastic.
10:52 These might be my favorite.
10:53 If I had to organize these in my favorites, these are my favorite.
10:59 These are delicious.
11:00 These are all really good.
11:01 Everything to hear on is like wood grab, do enjoy.
11:05 Honey barbecue is not that sweet.
11:08 Flaming hot, yeah, hot, but not really flavorful.
11:11 Dill pickles.
11:12 Pickles suck.
11:13 You can also get the adobas flavor, the Doritos cool ranch lays flavor, and a cheddar jalapeno,
11:21 which I really wanted to get.
11:22 Couldn't get my hands on it.
11:24 All right, onto our regional limited, starting with the spicy chicken with rat and pepper.
11:33 Now this is a very popular dish from Sichuan province down in Southwest China.
11:37 That aroma is legit.
11:40 Very legit.
11:45 This is way more numbing than the spicy and numbing hot pot, and more spicy too.
11:51 The hot pot strikes back.
11:52 This time it's the spicy hot pot.
11:56 Nah, I don't taste the beef oil in there.
12:00 I don't get the savory.
12:01 Nah, this is meh.
12:03 Sesame sauce hot pot.
12:06 This is a Cantonese flavor.
12:11 For once, this is Sam Tung roast goose flavor.
12:17 Oh, well done.
12:21 Yes, yes.
12:24 Sam Tung represent.
12:28 Marinated chicken feet.
12:30 Lingyi stir fry chicken.
12:32 Now this originates from Shandong province, which is over in Eastern China.
12:36 They're quite fond of their stews and braises over there, meats and vegetables that have
12:41 been cooked for a very long time.
12:42 So hopefully this will be very flavorful.
12:44 Okay, so I can taste a sort of a roast meat flavor, especially when you cook with a Chinese
12:50 wok.
12:51 There's a bit of smokiness that is attached to the meat after you've cooked it.
12:55 I feel like I'm getting that here.
12:57 We're back to the Sichuanese flavors again.
12:59 This is, it's called Lazi Ji.
13:02 So it's basically stir fried chicken in a mountain of chilies.
13:07 You know that the whole point of Lazi Ji is not to eat tons of chicken, but to find chicken
13:15 from within the mountain of chilies.
13:17 It's a dish that goes especially well with beer.
13:22 There we go.
13:25 We have another hot pot.
13:27 This I think is the most pointless kind of hot pot.
13:30 This is hot pot for people who can't eat spicy or numbing hot pot.
13:33 For people like you out there, we have tomato hot pot.
13:37 Okay, fair enough.
13:40 It's quite tasty.
13:41 And now for our 2023 spring lineup, beginning with salt and pepper mantis shrimp.
13:54 What do we have next?
13:57 Beef Wellington.
14:03 I'm speechless.
14:07 This leaves me very confused.
14:10 It just tastes like butter.
14:12 And last but not least, we've got the takoyaki flavored chips.
14:17 These are Japanese street food.
14:19 Oh, yeah.
14:22 Oh, the smokiness is on point.
14:25 We have a bunch of chip style varieties in the US, starting with another thick chip variety,
14:33 kettle cooked.
14:34 I don't know what it means.
14:35 I'm assuming they cook them in a kettle.
14:36 I don't know how.
14:37 I don't know how to make regular chips.
14:38 There's so many flavors to choose from.
14:39 Sea salt and vinegar, sea salt and cracked pepper, mesquite barbecue, jalapeno.
14:44 Everyone in the US, I want to tell you right now, these chips, fantastic.
14:48 These might be my favorite chips.
14:49 These are so good.
14:55 Other flavors include original, flaming hot, and Maui onion.
14:58 All right, now on to our selection of wavy and wavy limited.
15:05 Beginning with our roast chicken wing.
15:07 This feels thicker than the regular chip.
15:10 Very crunchy.
15:12 I'm starting to get the roast chicken in there.
15:14 That's decent.
15:15 The roast squid.
15:18 Not that big a fan of roast squid, to be honest, but I will try the roast pork.
15:25 It's tasty, but I can't really get the pork in there.
15:29 I think the chicken is still better.
15:31 This just says pure spicy.
15:35 As if we haven't already eaten enough spicy chips.
15:39 And tomato, nah, nah.
15:43 This can stay unopened.
15:45 Moving on to our wavy limited.
15:48 These are a collaboration with another snack brand here in China called Huang Feihong,
15:52 who make spicy peanuts.
15:54 This one is hot and sour chicken feet.
15:59 This is the spicy peanut flavor for which the Huang Feihong brand is best known.
16:08 Tastes like spicy peanuts, but in chip form.
16:11 Okay, I'm sure many of you must be super curious as to what this is.
16:16 This is Lei's Choco Ridge, which is a collab with a brand that's literally called Lecake.
16:24 This is their cheesecake flavored Choco Ridge.
16:27 I've never had this either.
16:29 A sweet dessert Lei's.
16:32 Wow.
16:33 This is so wrong that it's so right.
16:36 Wow.
16:38 Wow.
16:41 I have very high expectations for this now.
16:43 This is the Choco Ridge chocolate truffle.
16:48 Here you can actually see how it's literally just a regular Lei's crisp covered in chocolate.
16:54 Well done.
16:55 This is a good collab.
16:57 We have something similar, our wavy style chips.
17:00 These are three of the many options you can get here in the US.
17:03 Of course, starting with original.
17:05 We also have Hickory BBQ.
17:07 I don't even know what this is.
17:09 Is this like they combined Funyuns and wavy together?
17:12 Oh, these are weird.
17:13 I'm going to skip those.
17:16 You can also get wavy reduced fat original, wavy ranch, wavy salt and pepper, and wavy
17:21 lightly salted.
17:22 Now onto our non potato options, of which we have a lot.
17:27 These are all yam.
17:30 Yams have subcategories of yam crisps and yam rolls as well.
17:36 These are the black sesame and chia seed yam crisps.
17:41 Man, they sound healthy, don't they?
17:43 So in traditional Chinese medicine, black sesame is thought to help with hair growth.
17:47 I've been recommended it a lot.
17:51 I can taste the nuttiness of the black sesame.
17:55 And I feel like my hairline is coming back any moment now.
17:59 This is also something that adheres to traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese dates and goji berries.
18:05 These are delicious.
18:08 Wow.
18:09 Here we have pastoral tomatoes, roast chicken wing.
18:15 Onto our yam rolls, these are an upgraded version of the crisps that you see.
18:22 This is steak with tartary buckwheat.
18:26 These things are so wafer thin, they have like this amazing crunch.
18:30 They're airy, they're light.
18:32 The very slight bitterness of the buckwheat lends itself very well to the steak.
18:37 Fragrant red stew consisting of yam and highland barley, which is the main cereal planted on
18:45 the Tibet-Tinghai plateau.
18:46 We also have taro and sweet potato chips.
18:51 This one is with black pepper and sea salt.
18:59 It's very thin, yet it's not crispy.
19:01 It feels almost a little bit soggy.
19:04 Refreshing lime.
19:05 What's with all the refreshing chips?
19:11 Pass.
19:14 Sweet potato chips, natural flavor.
19:18 I know this probably frustrates some of you at home, but the majority of people here in
19:24 China open crisp packets like this, as opposed to horizontally like in the West, because
19:30 it's easier to open this way, easier to share.
19:34 When you reach in, you don't get salt stuck to your hand.
19:37 And it's also just less effort.
19:39 I mean, we don't need to brute weigh our way into things.
19:44 Not gonna lie, it's not so bad.
19:46 So we had the regular sweet, sweet potato chips.
19:50 Now we have sweet potato chips with added brown sugar.
19:55 Oh, oh, oh, oh, why?
20:01 No.
20:02 I'm not gonna waste as little time as possible on these baked chips.
20:07 They just, for people who want their chips to be more brittle and less flavored, I don't
20:11 know, these suck.
20:12 You have original or barbecue.
20:14 Here's original.
20:15 I mean, this is the third time we've done this.
20:18 Don't bother.
20:19 Just trust me.
20:20 Don't bother.
20:21 Listen to this.
20:22 They're all destroyed in there.
20:23 Just they have no taste.
20:24 They're flimsy.
20:25 They're baked.
20:26 They're bad.
20:27 There's the Better For You and Simply bread.
20:29 The Better For You is a lightly salted, lightly salted barbecue, wavy, lightly salted.
20:33 All these right here.
20:34 I get it.
20:35 Sodium can be an issue for snacking chips a lot, so why not go with the lightly salted?
20:39 Maybe, I mean, 50% less sodium.
20:43 That's pretty good, right?
20:44 I mean, how do these, I'm curious how these compare to them.
20:50 Is that 50% less?
20:53 This is 100% less.
20:54 I don't taste anything.
20:56 Also the Simply, I guess the whole deal is they just use simpler ingredients.
21:04 Made with three simple ingredients, potatoes, sunflower oil, and sea salt.
21:08 There's also the Simply barbecue thick cut.
21:11 How much better could it be?
21:12 We also have two exclusives from the Simply lineup, which have 50% less saturated fat,
21:20 the refreshing lime, and the seaweed.
21:23 Guess what?
21:24 We even have Lay's French fries.
21:28 Let's go with the original flavor.
21:31 These come in really big packets, by the way.
21:42 It's so incredibly salty.
21:44 I am so glad that they only gave us this tiny packet, because I'm going to just, no, I don't
21:50 want the rest.
21:51 Cheese and butter French fries.
21:54 Pink grapefruit flavor.
21:56 I mean, you can't see this and not try it.
22:04 This is really good.
22:09 This is so weird, but it's really good.
22:12 Hot pink grapefruit Lay's.
22:19 I'm going to pick that up and eat it.
22:21 It's that good.
22:22 Mmm,好吃!
22:23 这是真的好吃!
22:27 We also have seaweed flavor French fries and tomato flavor French fries.
22:36 But I am dying to try this.
22:43 Purple potato French fries.
22:45 Oh, I don't even know what that tastes like.
22:53 No.
22:54 Now we have one more non-potato chip Lay's.
23:02 The air fried chicken breast.
23:05 I have absolutely no idea how much chicken is in here.
23:09 It looks like very tiny pizzas or little crackers.
23:22 It leaves me very confused.
23:25 I do taste the chicken, but hey, this is an interesting flavor.
23:30 Ugh, stacks, stacks, stacks.
23:35 If you've seen any of the Lay's food wars we've done, I hate these for every reason.
23:41 They are Pringle shaped chips in plastic tubes instead of plastic bags.
23:47 First of all, worst container, right?
23:51 Does that sound like some chips are intact?
24:01 Chips are really messed up, man.
24:02 Not a pleasant experience at all, but I'm contractually obligated to tell you, besides
24:07 these two flavors, you can also get stacks in Mesquite BBQ, Cheddar, Salt and Vinegar,
24:13 Bacon and Cheddar Potato Skins, Buffalo Wings with Ranch, Extra Flamin' Hot, Flamas, and
24:19 Chili Limon.
24:21 Please don't get them.
24:22 Trust me, they suck.
24:23 We've got stacks too, and in many more flavors, as you can tell.
24:29 Stacks is basically Lay's take on the Pringles, but whereas Pringles took 10 years to come
24:35 up with their saddle shaped chip, which is actually known as a double curved hyperbolic
24:41 paraboloid, stacks went with a single curved hyperbolic cylinder.
24:48 So you can actually see the difference in the shape of the chip right here.
24:54 The stacks, by the way, comes with a fancy schmancy plastic tray that's meant to keep
25:02 it from breaking, but hasn't worked very well in this case.
25:07 Here is an intact stacks, and here is an intact Pringle.
25:12 To be honest, they kind of look similar.
25:14 The Pringle has an extra curve down here, whereas the stacks down here appears to be
25:19 a bit more flat.
25:21 Now the stacks also comes in tomato flavor, cucumber flavor.
25:26 There are some flavors that I would love to try, such as the sizzled barbecue flavor.
25:33 Oh, wow.
25:37 This is a good plastic tray.
25:40 That's right.
25:42 Black pepper, ribeye steak.
25:48 This I'm actually very excited to try finger licking red braised pork.
25:53 There's maybe a hint of pork in there and some sugar and some caramelizing, but that's
25:58 pretty much it.
25:59 Okay, we've got one for you stacks fans out there.
26:02 These are the stacks premium, the stacks black.
26:07 The Chinese name actually says potato workshop, and apparently it has real food ingredients.
26:15 So this is avocado with mustard.
26:20 Why?
26:22 Okay, now we have purple potato.
26:26 So basically sweet potato with coconut milk.
26:36 Maybe it's an acquired taste.
26:37 Oh, I mean, you guys know I don't like truffle now.
26:40 Anyway, I'm pretty low brow, but this is black truffle and black pepper flavored potato chip,
26:48 Spanish ham flavored potato chips.
26:51 I love me some in bed.
26:53 A co-common.
26:54 I am praying that this is going to be tasty.
27:02 Fire them all the rubbish.
27:05 This is spicy crawfish.
27:07 Oh, yes.
27:11 Okay.
27:13 Finally, we have a winner from the stacks premium lineup.
27:17 This is great.
27:18 And I would say that this tastes even more authentic than the regular potato chip version
27:25 of the spicy crayfish that we had earlier.
27:28 Oh, roast chicken skewer, Wagyu beef, sour and sweet rose petals.
27:34 Oh, come on, ladies.
27:36 You're just playing with me now.
27:38 This is delicious.
27:41 Wow.
27:44 Imagine sitting in a nice, warm, milky bath, floating with rose petals and eating this
27:52 sweet and sour rose petal lace.
27:56 That would be the best evening ever.
27:59 Wow.
28:01 This is great.
28:02 Fantastic.
28:03 We have a seaweed flavor.
28:04 I like my seaweed.
28:05 We've had too much seaweed today.
28:06 I'm pretty sure this is going to be okay.
28:08 We also got poppables.
28:09 These are so stupid.
28:11 What is this?
28:12 We don't need a new shape.
28:14 Tell everyone in the biz, we don't need new shapes.
28:18 So I don't know what this thing's supposed to be, but you can get it in sea salt, honey
28:21 barbecue, sea salt and vinegar, white cheddar.
28:27 Look at this.
28:28 It's all hollow inside.
28:29 It's like a giant Chex.
28:38 What are we doing here?
28:43 What are we doing here?
28:44 Why?
28:45 What?
28:46 What?
28:47 What?
28:48 Now I know Lays seems like I'm going to harden you guys, but I have to say, ending with the
28:52 dips, Lays dips are fantastic.
28:55 They have three to choose from, the smooth ranch, the French onion, and the creamy jalapeno.
29:01 Couldn't get it.
29:02 This French onion dip is drugs.
29:07 Any chip works with it.
29:09 Let's do my favorite kettle, jalapeno.
29:15 Stellar.
29:17 This dip works on literally everything.
29:23 I would put this in my coffee if I could.
29:26 It is so great.
29:27 Fantastic.
29:28 The dips are great.
29:29 Check them out.
29:32 A 75 gram bag of American classic Lays in China is 7.3 Yuan or $1.06.
29:41 Our closest size to the 75 gram bag is the 74.4 gram bag, so 0.6 grams less.
29:47 And it's $2.48 or 17.04 Yuan.
29:52 That is a 134% cost increase in the US.
29:56 Right.
29:57 But then if you take into account purchasing power parity, then Lays charges the highest
30:02 price in the world for its chips here in China.
30:08 So here in China, even though the chip market only accounts for 15% of the snack industry,
30:16 Lays accounts for 50% of that chip market.
30:20 These guys are definitely the crème de la crème when it comes to potato chips here
30:24 in China.
30:25 And they've got such a wide variety of flavors that you will see them always in a prime shelf
30:33 location in every convenience store across the country.
30:37 Lays in the US, Lays is like the chip, right?
30:40 There's other chip brands, but Lays, probably the most ubiquitous.
30:44 You see them everywhere.
30:45 They have so many different options and styles.
30:47 I think any type of potato chip is even remotely popular.
30:50 Lays is a knockoff version of it.
30:53 Always good.
30:54 Always available.
30:56 Always decently priced, I guess.
30:58 I think Lays has been incredible in adapting to the Chinese market.
31:01 They've basically gone and found all of the popular flavors and combinations in China,
31:07 whether it's street food or restaurant food, and put them into a convenient and portable
31:13 chip packet.
31:14 Lays is incredible at adapting because, as you saw before, every style they have, besides
31:19 the regular potato chip, is a style that another chip brand had that they just took on.
31:24 The kettle chips, they taste just like Miss Vicky's.
31:28 They got the wavy ones, which was Ruffles, right?
31:32 The Poppables, which, I don't know, Bugles, Chex, you tell me, any three-dimensional chip.
31:36 The Stacks, which is going after Pringles.
31:38 I mean, they're bloodthirsty, this company.
31:41 They will go after anyone.
31:46 Our classic Lays, aka the American flavor, are made of potatoes, oil, American classic
31:52 original seasoning, which is comprised of edible salt, monosodium glutamate, five flavor,
31:59 nucleotide, disodium, and silicon dioxide.
32:03 Our classic Lays are made up of potatoes, vegetable oil, which is canola, corn, soybean,
32:09 indoor sunflower oil, and salt.
32:12 There are two ingredients we wanted to highlight, which are monosodium glutamate, aka MSG, and
32:18 five flavor nucleotide disodium.
32:21 These two ingredients are used to give our chips a savory umami flavor.
32:25 MSG, it's the black sheep of condiments.
32:30 For those of you who don't know what MSG is, it's used to add savoriness to food and was
32:35 also associated with something called Chinese restaurant syndrome, which has since been
32:39 debunked many times.
32:41 Turns out it was a hoax, but basically the gist is when you go to a Chinese restaurant,
32:46 after eating its food, you'll feel headaches, dizziness, sore throat, loss of appetite.
32:52 You know, MSG is not a culprit.
32:54 It's naturally occurring in tomatoes and bone broths.
32:58 It's found in fermented foods from cheese to Worcestershire sauce to soy sauce.
33:03 And actually the vast majority of MSG in the world is made through fermentation, just like
33:08 yogurt or vinegar.
33:09 MSG was a cause for health concerns in the US for decades and concern still lingers today,
33:15 even though the FDA considers the addition of MSG to foods as being generally recognized
33:20 as safe, GRAS.
33:23 Both countries use the food coloring caramel color in our barbecued chips.
33:27 Now certain types of caramel color contain a byproduct called 4-MEI, 4-methyllimidazole,
33:35 and studies found that it caused cancer in rats and mice, which led to campaigns calling
33:39 for it to be banned from foods.
33:42 But it's also worth noting that this byproduct is found when you roast foods like coffee
33:48 and meat.
33:49 And the FDA was like, eh, it's fine.
33:54 Humans don't come close to the levels of exposure that cause the rat tumors.
33:58 That didn't stop the state of California adding it to its Proposition 65 list of chemicals
34:03 quote "known to the state of California to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity," end
34:08 quotes.
34:09 A 30-gram packet of China Lays American Classic flavor chips contains 162 calories, 1.7 grams
34:23 of protein, 10.5 grams of fat, of which 5.3 grams are saturated fats, 15.1 grams of carbs,
34:33 of which 0.4 grams are sugars, 0.8 grams of fiber, and 170 milligrams of sodium.
34:42 A 20-gram bag of Classic Lays in the US contains 160 calories, total fat 10 grams, of which
34:48 saturated 1.5 grams, carbs 15 grams, and 170 milligrams of sodium.
34:54 We did find that the 160 calorie chips with the highest fat content are the cheddar and
35:00 sour cream chips.
35:01 Here's what's in a bag of those.
35:03 160 calories, 10 grams of fat, of which 1.5 are saturated, 15 grams of carbs, and 170
35:10 milligrams of sodium.
35:13 We have a very shocking discovery.
35:17 Currently, Lays healthiest chips are in fact their least healthy, in that they have more
35:23 calories on average than any other Lays product here in China.
35:29 And the worst offender is my hair growth serum, the black sesame and chia seed yam crisp.
35:41 Now 100 grams of this will equal 598.7 calories, or 168 calories for a 28-gram packet.
35:53 Now in a 30-gram portion, you'll have 179.6 calories, 1.6 grams of protein, 13.3 grams
36:04 of fat, of which 6.6 are saturated fat, 13.7 grams of carbs, and 212 milligrams of sodium,
36:15 which means that the healthy yam chips are on average 11% more calorific than any other
36:21 Lays chips, containing less protein and carbs, and more sodium and fat.
36:28 You know, I always thought healthy just meant not tasty, but in Lays' case, apparently it
36:34 also means less healthy.
36:36 What a plot twist.
36:37 Okay, I don't know.
36:39 Is this guy any good?
36:40 It says Messi on his shirt.
36:41 Oh, is it?
36:42 Is it Messi?
36:43 No, it's not.
36:44 That's not Lionel Messi, right?
36:45 No, that's not what he looks like.
36:46 That's not him.
36:46 No, that's not what he looks like.
