00:00 A Pakistani court has suspended former Prime Minister Imran Khan's recent conviction on
00:06 corruption charges.
00:08 But the decision will not lead to his release, as a judge has ordered his detention in another
00:13 case on charges of leaking state secrets.
00:16 His lawyer, Naeem Panjuta, announced the news on social media on Tuesday, saying the sentence
00:22 has been suspended.
00:25 70-year-old former cricket hero Khan has been at the centre of political turmoil since his
00:30 ouster in a parliamentary vote of confidence in April 2022.
00:37 His relations with Pakistan's powerful generals have deteriorated ever since.
00:43 Khan was imprisoned on August 5.
00:47 He'd been sentenced to three years in jail for unlawfully selling state gifts during
00:52 his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
00:57 His legal team had lodged an appeal on the grounds that he was convicted without being
01:01 given the right to defend himself.
01:04 As a result of the conviction, and with a national election expected soon, Pakistan's
01:09 election commission has also barred Khan from contesting elections for five years.
01:14 The remaining charge against Khan alleges he made public the contents of a confidential
01:18 cable sent by Pakistan's ambassador to the United States and used it for political gain.
01:25 Khan says the cable proves his removal was at the behest of the United States, which
01:29 he said pressed Pakistan's military to topple his government because he had visited Russia
01:34 shortly before its attack on Ukraine.
01:37 Both the United States and the Pakistani military deny this.
