00:00 In the beginning, he was gentle, caring and charming.
00:05 But when they moved in with him, everything changed.
00:09 Four women, complete strangers,
00:14 but all share the same violent ex,
00:17 a man they once loved and trusted.
00:21 He met three on dating sites, one out on the town.
00:27 It started out sweet and romantic,
00:30 but before long he was closely monitoring where they went and with who,
00:35 threatening them and isolating them from loved ones.
00:39 Now he's been taken to court by the women,
00:44 on charges ranging from family violence to rape.
00:48 The man, who we can't legally name, was with the women at different times
00:55 between 2009 and 2020.
00:59 Coercive control was at the centre of every relationship.
01:03 They were all threatened with abuse,
01:06 emotional, psychological and eventually physical.
01:10 The court heard the man was violent,
01:14 particularly if he'd been drinking and would force the women to have sex.
01:19 Some crimes occurred in the presence of children,
01:24 for one woman, when she was pregnant.
01:27 The court heard all four women have been diagnosed
01:30 with post-traumatic stress disorder.
01:33 Two of them faced their abuser in court
01:36 to read out their victim impact statements,
01:39 describing the man as violent and cruel.
01:43 I left the relationship because I thought I would die.
01:48 The verbal abuse was unrelenting.
01:52 The emotional abuse still lives inside my head.
01:55 Nightmares and flashbacks are now part of my life.
01:59 The man has been sentenced for his crimes
02:04 and will now spend 18 and a half years in jail,
02:07 although he could be released on parole after 11 years.
02:11 It's about making sure that both partners are equal in the relationship,
02:16 which, if that isn't the case, you're heading into dangerous territory.
