00:12 Susan, security here in Mendiola has been tight,
00:18 but the teachers and students are still peaceful.
00:26 Around 5 a.m. earlier, some teachers and students
00:30 from public schools in Metro Manila marched here to Mendiola, Manila.
00:34 They called this a "sunrise protest."
00:37 Their main call is for an increase in the budget for education.
00:41 Teacher Ruby Bernardo,
00:43 the president of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers or ACT-NCR,
00:47 said that the public schools will face the same problems
00:50 when opening classes today.
00:52 Classrooms, seats, teaching and non-teaching personnel are not enough.
00:58 The teachers and students do not deserve a tight classroom.
01:02 And for all the hard work that the teachers are putting in,
01:04 their salary is not enough.
01:07 Ivan Suggang, the national chairperson of the League of Filipino Students,
01:12 said that curriculum change is not needed today
01:15 if not for system change.
01:17 Here is their statement.
01:20 I am the first batch of the K-12 program.
01:23 We were the first batch of the K-12 program
01:27 that they admitted to being tight.
01:29 And now, they want to instill new curriculum changes
01:33 that teachers need to study.
01:36 We are talking about the right to education.
01:38 Our call today is for an increase in the budget
01:41 for the essential needs of education,
01:44 like the addition of classrooms,
01:46 the addition of teaching and non-teaching personnel.

01:55 The teachers and students clearly stated
01:58 that they did not walk out.
02:01 Earlier, after the protest,
02:03 they also entered their classrooms.
