00:00 And now here's the star of "The Price is Right,"
00:03 Bob Barker!
00:04 - I have been blessed in that I have had 50 years
00:10 doing something that I have thoroughly enjoyed
00:14 and I've been paid for it.
00:15 How good can you have it?
00:17 - There they are, trading $5,000.
00:19 I'm constantly looking for a contestant
00:23 with whom I can get laughs.
00:25 - I had a dream about you, so I had to come down here.
00:29 What were we doing in the dream?
00:31 - You were chasing me in the halo.
00:33 - Bob started his career in radio
00:36 while he was still in college.
00:38 And even though when you think of "The Price is Right,"
00:40 you think of Bob, his big break was actually
00:43 truth or consequences in 1956.
00:46 - Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.
00:48 And I became the host of a national television show
00:51 just overnight.
00:52 It was the break of my lifetime.
00:55 - It was 16 years later in 1972 when Bob landed the job
00:58 he would hold for nearly 35 years.
01:01 - No matter how tired you get,
01:07 there's always a place to take a little rest.
01:09 - Bob helped thousands of contestants win big on the show,
01:12 but those wheel spins and car giveaways
01:15 helped him win 17 Emmys, the most of any game show host.
01:20 - How about that?
01:22 Give it back now.
01:23 - Love it.
01:24 - But in 2007, Bob decided to drop
01:25 his signature skinny mic and hand
01:27 "The Price is Right" over to Drew Carey.
01:29 - Drew Carey, come on down.
01:32 - It seemed to me that it was a neat time to retire.
01:35 The show has been a hit since day one
01:38 and is still right up there at the top.
01:40 And I thought this was just a good time to quit.
01:45 - He wasn't gone for long though.
01:46 Bob returned to the show three more times,
01:49 first in 2009 to promote his autobiography.
01:52 - With your permission,
01:54 I would like to give everyone in the audience
01:56 a big round of applause.
01:58 (audience cheering)
02:00 - Then again in 2013 to celebrate his 90th birthday.
02:03 - Everybody say hi to the birthday boy, Bob Barker.
02:05 (audience cheering)
02:07 - And finally in 2015 for an epic April Fool's Day prank,
02:12 taking Drew's place for a while
02:13 before handing the reins back over.
02:15 - Here's your host, Drew Carey.
02:18 (audience cheering)
02:23 - I'm here because I was selected by the Price is Right
02:28 to be their April Fool.
02:31 (audience cheering)
02:35 - How do you keep in such marvelous shape?
02:37 - Well, I'm a vegetarian and I try to get my rest
02:42 and I drink.
02:43 (laughing)
02:46 - That sounds like a nice start for my life.
02:47 I'm gonna change it all over to that.
02:50 - Bob had other iconic gigs.
02:51 His appearance in Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore in 1996
02:55 was his first ever movie role in that fight, Comedy Gold.
03:00 - I don't want a piece of you.
03:01 I want the whole thing.
03:03 (thudding)
03:04 - E.T. was on the set with Bob where at 72 years young,
03:07 he did his own stunt work.
03:09 - Let's go.
03:10 (thudding)
03:12 - Fellas on the Price is Right,
03:13 we were talking about this in the dressing room
03:15 and I told them that I was gonna be doing this
03:18 and that I won the fight and so on.
03:20 And they said, "Well, you gotta do it yourself.
03:21 "You gotta do it yourself."
03:23 And so I suggested that and they're letting me do it myself.
03:26 I'm pleased.
03:27 (grunting)
03:30 Here's a young man who watched me as he was growing up
03:33 and look at him, he's a star.
03:34 He's a success.
03:35 - See, that's what happens.
03:36 - It could happen to you if you watch me on television.
03:39 (laughing)
03:40 (upbeat music)
03:42 - Bob went on to do cameos in other shows
03:44 like How I Met Your Mother and Family Guy
03:46 and even dropped in on the Everybody Loves Raymond set
03:49 for a gag.
03:50 - Brad.
03:51 (laughing)
03:53 This is Brad.
03:55 - Brad.
03:56 Yes, Brad.
03:57 Yes, Bob.
03:58 - Brad.
03:59 - How are you?
04:00 - I've been your fan for years.
04:01 - You're the best.
04:02 Thank you.
04:02 Brad.
04:03 - But perhaps his favorite role
04:05 was that of devoted husband to his wife of 36 years,
04:08 Dorothy.
04:08 The couple met when Bob was just 15 years old
04:11 and remained together until her death from lung cancer
04:14 in 1981 at age 57.
04:16 It was true love for Bob,
04:18 who always credited his wife with his success.
04:21 - My wife and I had our own radio show
04:23 years and years and years ago.
04:26 And when we'd go on vacation,
04:27 we'd be talking about the show.
04:29 If we had a long weekend,
04:31 no matter what we were doing,
04:32 we'd say, you know, for the show we could.
04:34 And it was always the show, the show.
04:37 - Bob never remarried.
04:38 And in his later years,
04:39 he was often seen visiting Dorothy's grave.
04:41 But here's something else most people never knew about Bob.
04:44 - I am a karate enthusiast.
04:47 Chuck Norris was my first instructor.
04:49 I had never even seen karate, let alone do it.
04:52 And I had Chuck Norris as a guest on "Truth or Consequences"
04:56 and he did a demonstration that was so impressive
04:58 that I thought, ooh, I want to do that.
05:01 Here's my friend in retirement.
05:03 She sees more of me and I see more of her
05:07 and we're happy on it, aren't we, Jesse?
05:10 - And while Bob's TV legacy is undisputed,
05:13 he hosted everything from "The Rose Parade"
05:15 to the Miss USA pageant
05:17 and earned a Lifetime Achievement Award
05:19 at the Emmys in 1999.
05:22 - I've thoroughly enjoyed listening
05:24 to all of these nice things said about me.
05:26 Things that in the past only I've said about me.
05:29 (audience laughing)
05:31 Well, you can't get too many of them.
05:33 - He was also universally admired as an animal activist,
05:37 using his platform to raise awareness
05:39 with his famous sign-off.
05:40 - To help control the pet population,
05:43 have your pets fed or neutered.
05:45 - That sign-off was immortalized by Eddie Murphy
05:48 decades later in "Shrek 2".
05:50 - I say we take the sword and neuter him right here.
05:52 Give him the Bob Barker treatment.
05:54 - Well, I've always loved animals.
05:58 I felt compelled to try to do what I could
06:03 to change the situation.
06:05 - Bob took a hard stance when it came to fighting
06:07 for the humane and ethical treatment
06:08 of animals around the world.
06:10 He was a vocal campaigner against all forms
06:12 of animal cruelty and exploitation,
06:15 protesting publicly on behalf of his four-legged friends.
06:18 - Release those elephants
06:21 and let them go into a sanctuary.
06:23 - I would prefer that animals were not exploited
06:27 in any way, circuses, rodeos, movies, zoos, you name it.
06:32 Now look up there and smile.
06:34 There you are.
06:35 We need more voices like mine
06:38 and we need more voices, period.
06:40 - I think that the fact that I have the opportunity
06:43 to be with you on entertainment tonight is important.
06:47 The fact that I have the opportunity to talk about animals
06:50 to your vast audience is important.
06:53 - Bob even took on movie studios,
06:55 demanding the ethical treatment of animals on set.
06:58 No matter how cute and cuddly or large and majestic,
07:01 Bob was their champion and made no apologies for it.
07:04 - You get the idea I have an opinion?
07:06 - You sure do.
07:07 I'll tell you that much.
07:09 You should see me when I get councilman to listen.
07:12 (laughing)
07:14 - In his later years, Bob was plagued by health problems,
07:16 including a torn ligament in his ankle,
07:18 prostate surgery and neck surgery.
07:21 - I had a carotid artery that had become blocked
07:25 and I had some surgery from which I've recovered
07:28 very well, thank you.
07:29 And I am back at work
07:31 and we're grinding out one hit after another.
07:35 - In 2015, he suffered a bad fall
07:37 on the sidewalk outside his home.
07:39 - Well, I twisted and landed right over here,
07:42 but my head was up on the cement
07:45 and so I cut my head all up and cut my knee and scraped it.
07:50 - Bob recovered from the scrapes and bruises
07:54 and enjoyed relatively good health well into his late nineties
07:58 but we will always remember him
08:00 for his warm smile and good nature
08:02 and the happiness he brought to millions of fans.
08:05 - I've enjoyed the whole thing, I really have.
08:09 Where am I gonna be?
08:10 I hope I'm up there looking down on the whole thing.
08:14 I'd hate to think I'm looking up.
08:16 - I would like to have them remember me
08:17 as a man who loved all living things
08:22 and did all he could during his life
08:25 to make ours a better world for animals.
08:29 And at the same time, did a lot of television shows.
08:32 (laughing)
08:34 (upbeat music)
08:38 (bells chiming)
