00:00 For the first time ever in the history of world space science, the soil of the moon
00:11 has been profiled.
00:13 The Chandrayaan-3 has found that there is a variation in the temperature up to 10 cm
00:18 below the surface at the south pole of the moon.
00:21 Four days after the successful soft landing of ISRO's Chandrayaan on August 23, ISRO
00:26 on Sunday shared the first observations of Chandrayaan-3.
00:30 This is the very first time that a temperature profiling of lunar soil around the south pole
00:34 is being done.
00:36 Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment or CHAST payload has a temperature probe equipped
00:41 with a controlled penetration mechanism capable of reaching a depth of 10 cm beneath the surface.
00:47 The probe is fitted with 10 individual temperature sensors.
00:51 CHAST is on board the Vikram lander.
00:54 According to the space agency, CHAST measured the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil
00:59 to understand the thermal behavior of the moon's surface.
01:02 In an update on X, ISRO said, "Here are the first observations from the CHAST payload
01:07 on board Vikram lander.
01:09 CHAST measures the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil around the pole to understand
01:13 the thermal behavior of the moon's surface."
01:17 ISRO has posted a graph that shows the temperature variations of the lunar surface or near the
01:22 surface at various depths, as recorded during the probe's penetration.
01:27 ISRO expects detailed observations from Chandrayaan-3 very soon.
01:31 In the graph, the temperature ranged from 10 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius.
01:37 Chandrayaan-3 has seven payloads, four on the Vikram lander, two on the Pragyan rover
01:42 and one propulsion module payload.
01:44 These payloads are designed to carry out different scientific experiments.
01:48 Apart from CHAST, which is studying lunar soil, Vikram has Rambha to study ions and
01:53 electrons, ILSA to study the seismicity and LRA to understand the dynamics of the moon's
01:58 system.
01:59 Chandrayaan-3 has one lunar day or 14 Earth days on the moon to complete its assignments.
02:06 The Pragyan rover rolled out of the Vikram lander and has walked around the site where
02:10 it landed, now known as the Ship Shakti Point.
02:16 Now the scientific observations and measurements are underway.
02:19 ISRO chief S Somnath has earlier said that they chose the South Pole of the Moon as their
02:23 experiment site as the lesser-known South Pole may have the potential to host humans
02:28 in future if water can be processed, the area may even support mining.
02:33 The South Pole of the Moon is less illuminated by the sun.
02:36 Now that Chandrayaan-3 gives a clear picture of the soil temperature and its variation,
02:41 scientists will now examine the potential of the soil in the lunar South Pole.
