Magnetic Micro-Tentacle Robots Allow Deep Lung Surgery

Bioengineers at Britain’s University of Leeds have developed soft, silicone robotic tentacles, manipulated by external magnetic fields, that will allow minimally invasive microsurgery deep within the lungs. These tiny devices, only 2 millimeters in diameter, are capable of traveling 37% further into your airways compared with conventional surgical equipment. The spiral devices contain strings of small magnets that not only provide propulsion but also permit surgeons to reshape the device allowing it to penetrate into even smaller bronchioles. This device will permit sampling, removal, and even treatment of respiratory lining tumors without major surgery…..someday soon.
