00:00 What if getting up in the morning could be more fun?
00:01 What if going to work and just starting our day could be more fun?
00:04 When your body is feeling bruised and sore and when your spirit is feeling tired and
00:11 when your mind is just beside itself with anxiety and stress, it's so easy sometimes
00:19 to lose that enthusiasm.
00:22 I know that there is a handful of people who at this very moment are going through a really
00:29 tough time.
00:31 My oldest son David, he's a football player kind of kid.
00:36 One morning he wakes up with a pain in his chest and it turns out that he had a fist
00:40 size cancerous tumor in his chest.
00:45 And so we went through weeks and months of extensive chemotherapy.
00:50 My strapping football player lost all of his hair, had to have surgery and crack his chest
00:56 open and while I'm staying with David during his chemotherapy, I get a phone call from
01:01 my dad.
01:02 He said, "How soon can you be home?"
01:04 I said, "What's wrong?"
01:06 He said, "Your mom was just diagnosed with Alzheimer's."
01:09 My mom was so inspiring.
01:11 I thought she was the bravest person on the planet.
01:14 When I was 16 years old, she had given up nursing and anesthesia to take up flying.
01:19 And she told me once as she was going through the disease, "I'm so glad I learned about
01:23 the power of humor."
01:24 As a matter of fact, at one point I was taking her to a doctor's appointment and then she
01:28 said to me, "I need your help."
01:31 I said, "Mom, whatever you want, what can I do for you?"
01:34 She said, "I need to know how to tell the difference between your father, Lemoine, and
01:39 that other guy that looks just like him."
01:41 I didn't know whether to laugh or throw up.
01:44 It's that wave of nausea because I didn't realize it was that bad that she really thought
01:49 there was two guys in the house.
01:51 And I said to mom, "Okay, here's what you do.
01:53 The next time you see one of these guys, you say, 'Lemoine.'"
01:56 And if he says, "What, Shirley?"
01:59 That's dad.
02:01 If he says, "Who's Lemoine?"
02:03 That's the other guy.
02:06 She laughed and said, "I can do that."
02:09 And I discovered that for most adults, humor comes from pain and discomfort.
02:15 We're not laughing about a great hair day.
02:17 We're not laughing about a sexy figure.
02:18 We're not laughing about having lots of money.
02:21 We're laughing about the things that make us crazy.
02:23 When you've got those days where it's just so hard, here's an intentional thing that
02:27 you can do.
02:29 Create a playlist.
02:31 Come up with at least 10 things that you say, "Yeah, I think these are fun for me."
02:37 Now the trick is at least half of them have to cost $5 or less.
02:41 When you are most in need of something fun to do is when you're least going to be able
02:45 to think of it.
02:47 So coming up with a playlist, creating an awareness, manipulating your environment,
02:53 manipulating your mindset, you can have an amusing life.
02:56 But if you want an amazing life, then you be intentional about the other aspects of
03:00 your life.
03:01 Actually think, "What do I want?"
03:04 To ride the roller coaster with the wind in your hair, to delight in a child's giggle,
03:09 a smile from a stranger, to see the joy and wonder amid the pain in a baby's first cry,
03:16 or a loved one's last breath.
03:19 Whatever's required at that moment to keep yourself moving forward.
03:25 To grasp the game of life, to play hard, to win gracefully, to lose honorably, to find
03:32 the humor in life's absurdities, to be able to laugh at yourself, to have an attitude
03:38 of gratitude and a forgiving spirit, to live each day amazed and amused.
03:44 This is to experience true success.
