After the marvellous success of Chandrayaan-3, ISRO is gearing up for an another exciting lunar venture. This time ISRO will be partnering up with Japan’s space agency...the JAXA. The name of this mission in the offing is The Lunar Polar Exploration Mission..or the LUPEX. LUPEX will aim to explore water resources in the lunar polar regions. This mission is also being now referred as Chandrayaan-4. LUPEX, which is slated to be launched in the next few years, will involve a Japanese rocket carrying an Indian lunar lander and a Japanese rover. ISRO will provide the lander, while JAXA will be responsible for the H3 launch vehicle and the rover.

00:00 After the marvellous success of Chandrayaan 3, ISRO is gearing up for another exciting
00:21 lunar venture.
00:22 This time ISRO will be partnering up with Japan's space agency, the JAXA.
00:27 The name of this mission in the offing is the Lunar Polar Exploration Mission or the
00:32 LUPEX.
00:33 LUPEX will aim to explore water resources in the lunar polar region.
00:38 This mission is also being now referred as Chandrayaan 4.
00:41 LUPEX, which is slated to be launched in the next few years, will involve a Japanese rocket
00:46 carrying an Indian lunar lander and a Japanese rover.
00:50 ISRO will provide the lander, while JAXA will be responsible for the H-III launch vehicle
00:54 and the rover.
00:56 The primary objective of LUPEX is to investigate the lunar polar region for the presence and
01:01 potential usability of water.
01:03 The mission aims to accomplish this goal through two fundamental avenues, determining the quantity
01:09 and quality of lunar water resources.
01:11 The quantity aspect seeks to establish the actual quantity of water present in the anticipated
01:17 areas based on existing observational data.
01:20 By acquiring in-situ measurements and ground truth data, LUPEX will offer a critical baseline
01:26 for calculating how much water must be transported from Earth for future lunar missions and how
01:31 much can be sourced locally.
01:33 This data could revolutionize the economics and sustainability of lunar exploration.
01:38 Simultaneously, the quality aspect aims to comprehend the distribution, conditions, and
01:44 form of lunar water resources through in-situ observations in the polar regions of the moon.
01:50 Understanding these parameters is crucial for effectively harnessing lunar water for
01:54 life support, propulsion, or as a shielding material.
01:58 To achieve these goals, LUPEX will deploy a cutting-edge spacecraft equipped with thin-film
02:03 solar cells and ultra-high-energy density batteries, ensuring uninterrupted power supply
02:09 even during the lunar night or in shadowed areas.
02:13 This technological innovation is critical for the rover's mobility and survival in the
02:17 extreme lunar environment.
02:19 LUPEX aspires to advance the technology required for surface exploration on low-gravity celestial
02:25 bodies.
02:26 This includes refining mobility solutions, perfecting lunar night survival mechanisms,
02:31 and developing excavation techniques for potential mining operations.
02:35 These advancements will not only support future lunar activities but could also have implications
02:40 for future missions to Mars and beyond.
