Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning established Tesla Motors in July 2003. Nikola Tesla, an inventor and electrical engineer, is honored in the corporate name. Elon Musk became the company's biggest stakeholder in February 2004 after making a $6.5 million investment. He was appointed CEO in 2008. The stated goal of Tesla is to develop products that hasten the global switch to sustainable energy.
The Roadster sports car, which was Tesla's first vehicle type, entered manufacturing in 2008. Model S sedan, Model X SUV, Model 3 sedan, Model Y crossover, and Tesla Semi truck were released after this in 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020, respectively.
