00:00 She's really testing me. I mean, really testing me.
00:03 She will call me by all of Matthew's ex-girlfriend's names.
00:07 Matthew McConaughey's wife, Camila Alves McConaughey,
00:11 is getting candid about the beginning of her relationship with her mother-in-law.
00:15 On Tuesday, the 41-year-old model stopped by Southern Living's Biscuits & Jam podcast
00:21 and opened up about how she and Matthew's mom, Kay, didn't start off on the best foot.
00:26 You know, speaking of people taking care of each other,
00:29 I want to ask you about your mother-in-law, Kay, who y'all call Mom Mac.
00:34 Is that right?
00:34 Mom Mac, yes.
00:35 And how instrumental was she in helping introduce you to the culture
00:41 and helping you get on board with being a Texan?
00:45 That's a good question.
00:48 I think this idea of just shoot straight, it is what it is, and let's handle it.
00:54 Let's handle it. Let's get it done.
00:56 She has a lot of that in her, you know, and that pride as well.
01:02 She's a tough customer.
01:03 She's great.
01:04 I'll tell you a funny story of Mom Mac.
01:06 She did all these things when I first came in the picture, right?
01:08 And she's really testing me.
01:11 I mean, really testing me.
01:13 She will call me by all of Matthew's ex-girlfriend's names.
01:17 She would start speaking Spanish with me in a very broken way,
01:21 kind of putting down a bit, I mean, all kinds of stuff.
01:25 But then Camila shared the moment their relationship forever changed
01:29 on a trip in Istanbul.
01:30 And I got a job to go to Istanbul to go do a fashion show there.
01:36 And that job comes with the perks.
01:38 So if you get another first class ticket and you get another nice hotel room,
01:42 you get this, you get a driver.
01:43 I was like, Mom Mac, you going to come with me?
01:45 The whole way there, the whole plane ride to Istanbul,
01:50 she was telling me all the stories and putting all these things in my head.
01:56 Enough that when we landed, I was like, OK, all right, let me buckle up.
01:59 Let me get ready for this situation.
02:01 And then about day three, I was taking her to her room
02:05 and she got into this whole other thing that it's not my place to share.
02:09 And she starts crying.
02:11 And I'm like, oh, my gosh, you know, Mom Mac feeling so sorry.
02:15 And as I put her to bed, I look at her and I'm like,
02:19 oh, my gosh, she's full of s***.
02:23 So I just flip it on her and brought my spicy Brazilian Latin side
02:29 and I let her have it.
02:31 So I went back at her and we had it back and forth, back and forth.
02:35 And then at the end, she just looked at me, she was like, OK, now you're in.
02:39 You passed the test.
02:40 All she wanted was for me to fight back.
02:44 And then from that day on, that night on,
02:47 we have the most amazing relationship.
02:48 And I have so much respect for her.
02:50 She has so much respect for me.
02:52 I mean, it can get tricky sometimes, you know,
02:54 but we always end with the good laugh and a joke.
02:57 Things definitely turned out for the best as Matthew and Camila
02:59 have been married since 2012 and now share three children together.
03:03 Access Hollywood's Kid Hoover chatted with the Dallas Fires Club actor
03:07 in October 2020 following the release of his memoir, Green Lights.
03:11 And he reminisced on his and Camila's love story
03:14 from the first time they met to how she won over his mom.
03:18 Your wife, Camila, posted the most beautiful tribute
03:21 when your book went to number one. What did that mean to you?
03:24 I, you know, I just saw that someone sent that to me.
03:27 I did not even know she'd put that out.
03:29 And it was.
03:30 Very cool to read that one, to read the facts of what she put up there,
03:35 but also just reminded me of, you know, she was the first person I thanked
03:40 when I found out that the book had been so well and opened up at number one,
03:44 because I mean, I couldn't have done it without her.
03:47 She from.
03:48 The initial pushing me out the door and give me help
03:52 and give me the courage to say, get out of here.
03:54 You've been threatening to write a book for a while.
03:57 I see it eating at you. Get out of here.
03:59 Do not come back until you've got something.
04:01 And then to tell me when I would be away for two weeks and feeling like,
04:06 oh, I think I need to get back.
04:07 She was like, we got it. We're good.
04:09 If you're if you're still in the zone writing, do not come back. Stay there.
04:13 So she was incredible amount of support.
04:17 And then I would share with her different drafts as I came back.
04:19 And she's always been a very honest critic of the work I do.
04:22 And she helped me out a lot.
04:24 Your love story with her.
04:25 I loved reading those chapters.
04:27 Take me back to the moment you spotted her.
04:30 She floated on air.
04:31 My eyes, she sure did.
04:36 I went back and did the math.
04:37 She actually was walking on the floor, but as far as I could tell,
04:40 her head was not bobbing.
04:42 She was just sliding across the room.
04:45 Yeah, I was out holding court at a table making some margaritas.
04:48 And this figure about 20 feet in front of me moved from my right to left.
04:52 And there were these caramel colored shoulders and this sort of turquoise,
04:57 very thin, loose fitting, beautiful dress on.
05:00 And I remember I leaned forward without even thinking about it.
05:03 And I said, what is that?
05:06 I didn't say who was that. I said, what is that?
05:08 She went, sat down.
05:09 I started to kind of try to get her attention to call her from the room.
05:15 And as I was doing that, I heard my mother in my ear saying, boy,
05:19 get your butt up.
05:20 This ain't the kind of woman you wave across the room.
05:22 And I said, yes, ma'am, I got up.
05:24 Mind you, my mom wasn't physically there, but that's what I heard in my ear.
05:27 I introduced myself to Camilla.
05:29 I invited her and her friends over, which I think was a good move,
05:32 because I think if I would have just invited her over and not her friend,
05:35 she would have probably said no.
05:36 But because I invited her and her friends over, she then came over alone.
05:39 Bing! Green light.
05:41 Well played.
05:41 And then she sat down and I understood Portuguese and spoke better Spanish
05:44 that night than I ever have since.
05:46 And that got me in the door.
05:47 And I asked her out to go out the next night.
05:49 She couldn't for the most beautiful reason.
05:51 It was her father's birthday.
05:54 Non-negotiable. Beautiful.
05:56 And finally, I did get her to go out with me and we've been going out ever since.
06:00 But the night you kind of conned her to stay over, she slept in the separate bedroom.
06:04 My favorite part is you went down twice.
06:07 Do you ever think about doubling back for a third time?
06:09 Third time's the charm, my friend.
06:13 No, I finally got tired.
06:14 And that second the second time she kicked me out of that room, I could tell
06:18 she more than meant it.
06:19 I was like, I'm not going to I'm not going to test that again.
06:22 If I go back the third time, I may get injured.
06:24 I love you said there was a moment you saw her in the kitchen with your friends
06:29 and it was sort of an aha moment.
06:31 Do you remember the moment you knew that she had to be
06:35 the mother of your children and your wife?
06:42 It was probably about two years after that,
06:44 and we had been dating and it'd been going really well.
06:47 And she had come out to the set on location with me in Australia
06:53 on the film Fool's Gold, and I'd never brought anyone
06:56 male or female friends with me, then none even visited.
07:00 When I go to work, I'm like there in my trailer or where I'm renting my house.
07:03 And that's all I do.
07:04 I go to work, come home and and do it all over again.
07:08 And I really like my solitude.
07:10 Well, I wanted her to come out with me and she did.
07:15 We had taken a long weekend vacation to a little surf retreat in Papua New Guinea
07:22 where we were living in like a staying in this little tree
07:25 house in the middle of the jungle. It's beautiful.
07:26 And about five o'clock watching the sun go down
07:30 on the Solomon Sea one night, like day five.
07:33 I was really feeling like I would really fall in love with her.
07:36 And this is the woman I want to spend the rest of my time with.
07:38 And I would love for her to be the mother of children we can create.
07:41 And I asked her very nervously.
07:44 She was sitting to the right of me.
07:45 I said, what would I have to do to lose you?
07:47 And she was so cool about it.
07:50 I remember she had this our first cocktail she had in her hand that day.
07:53 And she she had her hand.
07:55 And as I asked her, what do I have to do to lose you?
07:56 She's her hand was on her way to her mouth.
07:59 She didn't pause. She took a sip.
08:01 Swallowed it, set the glass down on the exact water
08:07 ring that it had left on the arm of the wooden chair she was sitting in.
08:11 She looked out.
08:13 And really composed, she goes, oh, that's easy.
08:16 And then looked over at me and said.
08:20 Change.
08:21 Oh, I crumpled, I was like, please.
08:25 Amen. All aboard.
08:28 I'm in. Let's go.
08:29 And that's when I really was like, this is the one.
08:32 Did she always get along with your mom?
08:35 Kay was that instant, too?
08:37 No, that was an instant.
08:39 My mom is very, very.
08:42 Persistent about initiating.
08:47 Any woman into any of her son's lives,
08:50 she did it with my two older brothers and she had her she she she did it with Camilla,
08:56 too, she would do it by, you know, mispronouncing her name,
09:00 calling her by different names at certain times just to test her and mom.
09:04 And then you call her on it, go, mom.
09:06 And she's like, oh, what? Oh, I didn't notice I did that.
09:08 Oh, yes, she did notice she did that.
09:10 So she was she tested Camilla.
09:11 But Camilla did the great thing that my mom was really looking for.
09:16 She bucked up to her and they had they they they went off on a trip together one time.
09:22 I think it was to Turkey solo, just the two of them together for like a week.
09:26 And boy, they got back from that trip.
09:28 And my mom had full respect for Camilla and full blessing.
09:31 And.
09:31 (upbeat music)
09:34 (upbeat music)
09:37 (upbeat music)
09:40 (upbeat music)
