00:00 Let's do sports now on the AM show. I am Mufti Abdulla Abdi. Good morning.
00:05 Now we start with Team Ghana's preparations for the World Athletics Championships.
00:10 And the team finalised their training session on Tuesday ahead of the 200 metres heat later today.
00:18 Joseph Paul Amoie and James Darzee will be in action.
00:22 James Darzee is in heat 4, while Joseph Paul Amoie is in heat 6 of the competition.
00:29 He is the head coach of the team.
00:31 I am in a call speaking to my colleague Fenty Utahiru.
00:34 He believes that the boys have got what it takes to qualify to the semi-final of the competition.
00:40 Being in a camp is what we have been asking for for a long time.
00:44 This time around we are able to spend at least 10 days in France.
00:50 And then we are back here in Hungary doing the same thing that we are doing.
00:55 Looking at the training and everything, I think we are ready to hit it.
01:00 Qualification is the toughest in this tournament.
01:04 To advance from round 1 to round 2 is the most difficult.
01:08 And then looking at his heat, the seasonal best of the athletes that he is going to run with,
01:15 I think he has a chance of qualifying.
01:17 It's just about him executing what we are talking about, our race plan and everything.
01:23 So I think he has a chance of advancing to the next stage.
01:26 Darzee, his race, his heat seems, for want of a better word, relatively manageable.
01:35 He has the fastest time in there.
01:38 But he has a strap on his hamstring.
01:43 Talk to me about his physical situation.
01:47 Hamstring is something that comes and goes. It has to do with your mental toughness.
01:56 When you are returning from injury, you are very conscious about it.
01:59 Like, hey, it can come again and all those things.
02:02 He needs to get it out of his mind going into the race tomorrow.
02:07 If he thinks about it too much, it's definitely going to affect him.
02:11 But that's Jim Darzee. He's a tough guy.
02:17 When you are running late at night, you have a lot of work to do.
02:19 You really need to run a very fast curve.
02:23 He has to get the hamstring injury out of his mind if he has to qualify to the next stage.
02:30 Also, when it comes to the sprinters, apart from the relay team, with Jopo and Jim Darzee,
02:38 what have you been working on specifically?
02:41 Is it the speed? Is it technique? What have you been working on the most?
02:45 We have a few days to train. Adaptation-wise, you can say that we can use the 10 days that we spend to work on somebody's speed.
02:56 It's about their preparation that they have with their various coaches.
02:59 Before coming here, my duty here is to just maintain it and then to polish it
03:03 so that they don't lose that form that they had from the previous year.
03:08 Coach El Omder, speaking ahead of the 200 metres later today. It starts at 9.25am.
03:16 Now, let's hear from my colleague Fensi Utahiru, who was at the training grounds
03:20 and brings us an update of what he witnessed when he visited the team's training camp.
03:27 Yes, so they've been training quite well.
03:33 After Deborah Akpagwo missed out on a chance to qualify for the women's long jump final,
03:43 Team Ghana, since Saturday, they've not competed.
03:46 In fact, their first competition is on Wednesday, that's tomorrow,
03:50 when two of our athletes will take it to the tracks to compete in the 200 metres heat.
03:57 James Darzee, of course, I saw him. He's training really well, but he does have a bit of a plaster on his arm strength,
04:05 so he's not looking very good. Remember, he got injured after he ran the national record back at the end of April.
04:13 I think he ran that race on April 30th, so he still hasn't fully recovered from that.
04:18 In the shot, you see that's El Om in the Ghana shirt with Joseph Paul-Armoire,
04:25 who will also be running in the 200 metre heat tomorrow.
04:28 The relay team are the ones in your shot at the moment, obviously, also training because they relay the heat.
04:36 For that, it's on Thursday, so some of these guys will also be involved.
04:40 So that's Edwin Gaddahi, Raymond French, and Isaac Bosio in your shot.
04:44 The two 200 metre runners, Joseph Paul-Armoire and James Darzee,
04:49 and that's James Darzee. You see the plaster on his left arm strength there, and he's not looking very good.
04:55 However, the good news for him is that his heat looks really good.
05:00 Look at the numbers in there and what have you.
05:02 But, Mufti, in fact, after the conversation, you also see that the Ghana team are wearing all kinds of...
05:10 everybody's wearing their own thing.
05:12 I have also been told that an airline has lost their training kit.
05:17 So it's a really bizarre situation because...
05:21 and Team Ghana is not the only one to have lost kit.
05:23 Yesterday, I met the president of the Athletics Federation of Zimbabwe,
05:29 and he was running across, and I asked him, "Why are you in such a hurry, Mufti?"
05:35 This man, he is so big, but he was running and he was holding a bag.
05:40 And I asked him, "What's in the bag?" He said, "They are spikes."
05:42 So what are they for? He's going to give them to one of his athletes to use to run a race,
05:46 not just training. It was race day and he was still chasing spikes
05:50 because an airline lost their spikes on the way.
05:53 Wow.
05:54 The airline lost my bag as well.
05:56 I was actually going to mention that you've also lost your bag.
05:59 That's the problem. So it's been very chaotic in terms of the organization.
06:03 But Team Ghana has been training well. They have been here since Thursday.
06:07 My colleague, Feng Tzu, there, bring us up to speed on what Team Ghana has been doing
06:14 ahead of the 200 metres and the relay, which will be happening.
06:19 200 metres is today and the relays will be happening on Friday.
06:23 A sensational run there from Kenny Harrison as she won the heat in the 100 metres hurdles.
06:29 But now let's hear from Faith Kipiagong.
06:31 She became the first female ever in the history of athletics to win the 1500 metres back to back to back.
06:41 And she's been speaking to my colleague Feng Tzu here on becoming very fast after giving birth.
06:47 Mia, Ali, everybody's having a kid and coming back and running faster than before.
06:53 And I always like to ask that question.
06:55 What is so special about coming back from childbirth and doing much better than before?
06:59 I think that is the strongest point and the strongest thing, the strongest point of our career,
07:05 being a mom and coming out here and execute as much as we can to show other women that everything is possible.
07:12 Not only going to maternity leave and coming back, you can be stronger than before.
07:18 Your last lap was 56 seconds.
07:20 Thank you, Tiffan.
07:22 Your last lap was 56 seconds.
07:24 Was that the best you've ever told us? What's your best last lap ever?
07:27 I don't know. I didn't see the watch. I was just going for the gold medal.
07:33 That was my biggest thing. So I was just running faster than I can to win my title.
07:39 Now let's also hear from Mia Ali.
07:44 She's also been speaking about becoming extremely fast after giving birth.
07:49 I don't know. It's my first time doing it. But it's cool.
07:54 One last question for you. You're running your fastest now.
07:59 Right.
08:00 And at your oldest. What's the superpower about having a baby and coming back?
08:06 Because you're not the first person. A lot of you have been doing it. It's crazy.
08:10 I can't speak for the others. For me, I would say that before I had children, I was kind of young, vibing, out and about.
08:23 Not really tunnel vision. So I think that's really what made all the difference for me.
08:27 I'm just locking in a little bit more each year after each kid.
08:31 Knowing that when I get older, because some of the people in the past told me,
08:34 "You know when you get older, you're not going to be able to do that. You're not going to be able to eat that."
08:38 But now that I'm older, I'm like, "Oh, where is the vitamin store? I need to go to sleep."
08:44 So I think it's just doing all the right things now and still leaving that little bit of room with the balance.
08:53 But knowing I have that little bit of room to improve, just capitalizing on that.
08:58 I was going to talk about that balance. How to get it right. What kind of support system do you need to absolutely get that right?
09:04 My mom, Andre's mom, our family, they hold it down. My family really, really holds it down.
09:11 If I didn't have that, I wouldn't even be able to focus the way I can.
09:15 But they're with my family, so I don't even need to worry about my children when I'm out here.
09:19 I think that's the best part about it, having that balance.
09:22 Can I ask one more question?
09:23 I was in Doha when you won that championship, and then I was in Oregon when the drama happened.
09:30 It's been a lot of ups and downs. How does that make you feel?
09:35 From being a world champion to falling over in Oregon and then running your first time, all in the space of two, three years. It's crazy.
09:43 Yeah, it makes me feel good. It makes me feel more confident than ever right now.
09:47 I feel like I really got a handle on myself and my career, and that's the most exciting part about it all. I learned from my experiences.
09:53 Thank you. All the best for the semis and the final.
09:56 Thank you.
09:57 Now let's hear from Toby Emoh-San.
10:01 She's speaking to the media for the first time since she was charged by the World Athletics Integrity Unit for missing three separate tests.
10:11 It was her time to also have a go at journalists, saying that they should cut her some slack and that they claim to know her more than she knows herself.
10:21 Inasmuch as I don't like to reference things, but I hate when people feel like they know me.
10:26 My race in California, you wrote an article where you felt like you were buddies and I actually gave you intel on what to write.
10:34 I read that article you wrote and let me tell you, it brought me to tears.
10:41 And that, that hurt my feelings. It disrespected me as an athlete and my coach.
10:49 You didn't know what's around me at that time. You just sat down and wrote whatever you wanted. You didn't know what I was going through.
11:02 You just sat tight. That was it. That's what I'm about to tell you. You wrote everything I need to write. You're getting this career. That's all I'm about to say.
11:16 So what charges?
11:22 Mr. Carter, are you done answering your questions? You asked the same questions like five times now?
11:31 Yes, just eight.
11:34 Alright, so Toby, um...
11:36 Ridiculous.
11:37 Yeah.
11:38 Listen, Toby, we're so...
11:40 What? You're so annoying.
11:42 You run fast and want to talk about your shoes. You don't run fast and want to talk about what's going on. Like, come on, cut me a slack.
11:48 I'm not going to say no thank you.
11:50 No thank you? I'm not going to tell you no thank you.
11:52 I'm not trying.
11:54 Toby and Musunde not having it lightly with the media, saying that some of them report as if they know her more than she knows herself.
12:02 And also said that many of those reports brought her to tears.
12:06 Now, we wrap up with some football. The Ghana Football Association will be assembling in Tamale for an elective congress.
12:14 Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, Mark Addo, says that they've been putting together the right structures that will ensure the successful governance of football in the country.
12:23 And he says that the technical department of the Ghana Football Association, headed by Bernhard Lippert, is yet to achieve even 20% of what they dream for football.
12:33 We came in October, I think October 29th of 2019.
12:38 There's been massive improvements in terms of purely from restructuring the organization to ensure that we'll be able to put the right programs in place, you know, in all aspects.
12:59 Restructuring the finance organization, bringing in good technical people, hiring new CFO, putting the right controls and systems in place in terms of accountability.
13:16 Because FIFA demands, the levels in terms of FIFA expectations are very high.
13:23 We brought in a new marketing director to help in our campaign sponsorship, which has yielded tremendous results.
13:31 You have over 25 major sponsors for the FA, which you can see in our financials compared from 2019, 2020 to 2020, 2021.
13:41 You can see that. And the 2022 financials just closed. It's been audited as we speak.
13:47 And once we go to Congress again, it will be made public.
13:52 And then we also brought in, we set up a new legal department to help in the work, FA work.
13:58 We've also hired a new HR manager. We hired a new HR manager. Can you imagine not having an HR manager in our organization?
14:05 So we did that as well. The prosecutor was mandated by FIFA, which we hired.
14:11 So in terms of the right structures in place, we have done all that just to make sure the organization is properly structured for growth.
14:24 So that's what we've done. And there's a whole lot of work that goes on in this contest.
14:30 On the back of it, we've been able to meet our FIFA audit requirements and it's been tremendous amount of work that's gone into to get that done.
14:41 In terms of also in our statutory reporting, we've also made that as well, you know, by filing our financials with the Registered Journal.
14:51 So from organization structure, standpoint, turnaround structure, I think we are on the right course.
14:57 Then you veer into competitions, you know, so all these things, of course, we have to have the right people to plan for the competition, for the clubs and for the league.
15:10 We've also had to work on the other aspect in terms of refereeing, which was a big challenge when we came in.
15:18 Restructuring that, we got a referees manager, technical development of our referees.
15:25 Same as we set up, we didn't set up, we enhanced the technical directory behind Ben Andepet, the technical director.
15:34 They've done a lot of work at the technical directory, but still a lot of work needs to be done.
15:39 You know, we are not even 20% of what we expect the technical directory to do.
15:46 That's your Sports Final. We do have more sports stories on myjoyonline.com. The show continues right after this.
