00:00 >> TK Maxx has captivated the UK audience in a way that no other retailer has in that space.
00:10 You want a Ralph Lauren umbrella, get it from TK Maxx.
00:13 If you want a Gina pair of shoes for 60% of the retail price, get it from TK Maxx.
00:19 There isn't another store in the UK that competes with them.
00:24 And that is why they are so successful.
00:27 But can you tell the difference?
00:30 Consumer behaviour and retailing lecturer Dr. Amna Khan has given three industry experts six items we picked up from TK Maxx
00:39 to see if they can tell which brands are independent boutique designers and which ones are made by TK Maxx.
00:47 >> I want you to have a look at the look, the feel, take a look at the brand names.
00:53 You can tell thoughts being put into the brand name.
00:57 >> Well, I think if you were to tell me that this was a TK Maxx own brand product, I think they've really pulled it off here.
01:03 Because it strikes me as a sort of a decent good quality product.
01:09 >> The designer names they'll be analyzing are Paraphrase, If It Were Me, Ruby Moon, Maison Saint-Saëns, Arabella and Addison, and Mercer and Madison.
01:22 Another clue might be in the price tag, ranging from $14.99 to $59.99.
01:28 >> To be honest, I haven't heard of them. I don't think I have anything like that in my wardrobe.
01:34 >> It is actually a trip question. They are all own trademarks.
01:39 >> How do you feel about that?
01:41 >> Well...
01:43 >> A bit speechless.
01:44 >> I didn't think that TK Maxx would go straight in with the high end.
01:47 >> Quite eye opening, really.
01:49 >> So it seems the American retailer has pulled the wool over the expert's eyes.
01:54 >> I'm still in shock.
01:59 >> For the smaller brands, it is perfect to have your brand next to a large brand.
02:06 Because consumers perceive that things that are put together share the same value in retail.
02:13 Can you tell the difference between lacrosse sold at the top of the pyramid and lacrosse sold at the bottom?
02:20 Dr. Amner is back with her panel of experts to inspect three lacrosse teapots.
02:26 One from TK Maxx, one from John Lewis, and one from Selfridges.
02:31 The brand's recommended retail price for a stoneware teapot is 55 pounds.
02:37 >> Griff, would you like to take the cream pot?
02:41 >> So are there any signs to make the experts think it's a cheaper version?
02:46 >> I'm not sure here about the lid.
02:48 I mean, it wobbles, basically.
02:51 I've got some queries about whether that is a quality issue, which means it's kind of a seconds.
02:57 I think on balance I'd probably say maybe this is the sort of the TK Maxx.
03:01 >> Well, Ben, do you want to have a look at the teapot?
03:03 >> It's white here, but the lid is slightly cream.
03:07 It seems like the lid is not part of this particular teapot.
03:11 >> Which store do you think you would buy that from?
03:13 >> Because of the rattling and solely because of that, I would say TK Maxx.
03:18 >> Right. Opie, we're going to move on to this next teapot.
03:21 >> Hmm.
03:24 >> Gin in a bottle. Speak to me.
03:28 There's no giveaway to tell me what store it's from, but it's beautiful, you know?
03:33 >> And which store do you think you'd purchase that from?
03:35 >> I would go with Suffragette's.
03:37 >> Personally, I feel it's more contemporary. I prefer that.
03:42 And if I was going to put my money on it, I'd probably go down the John Lewis route for this.
03:47 >> Okay. So this is the final teapot. Opie, if you could have a look at that teapot for me.
03:52 >> I like this design. This shape, yeah.
03:55 >> There is something about these lids, isn't there?
03:58 And I think the reason perhaps it matters is that one thing you definitely don't want is to pour the tea and tea goes everywhere.
04:04 So there is an element of just feeling a little bit uncomfortable about that.
04:09 >> Would you buy it?
04:11 >> I don't think so, because I think if I was going to go something in white, I would go for something a bit more contemporary.
04:18 >> Okay. Have a look.
04:20 >> I mean, design-wise, it looks more traditional.
04:23 That's why I would say John Lewis, because it's more of a traditional store.
04:27 I'd probably pay similar to what I said for the last one, 50 to 60 pounds, I'd pay for that.
04:34 >> The panel have had their say, and now it's time to let the genie out of the teapot.
04:40 >> Everyone thought that this teapot is from TK Maxx, the cream one at the end.
04:45 This teapot is actually from John Lewis.
04:49 >> What? Are you serious? Wow.
04:53 >> The red-colored teapot, that pot is from Selfridges.
04:59 Moving on to the final pot, this teapot is from TK Maxx, and it is $14.99.
05:08 >> What? Wait.
05:10 >> Wow.
05:11 >> $14 or $14?
05:12 >> $14.99.
05:14 >> Oh, my God.
05:16 >> TK Maxx is just the best.
05:19 >> Well, thank you very much, everyone.
05:21 Now time for a cup of tea.
05:23 >> The American retailer certainly seems to be the panel's cup of tea.
05:27 And with a 25-pound saving compared to John Lewis and 35 pounds compared to Selfridges, it's easy to see why.
05:35 >> The pandemic was a perfect storm for TK Maxx.
05:38 Brands had an abundance of stock as a result of lockdowns.
05:43 And along comes TK Maxx with an offering that was unrivaled.
