00:00 >> It's going better for me, it's letting me show all phases of my game,
00:02 like where I can come down and hit tempo.
00:05 And then learning everybody's position, it makes the defense flow better.
00:10 It'll get me a better understanding, make better plays.
00:12 >> How long did it take you to kind of make that adjustment to the new position?
00:18 >> It didn't take that long.
00:19 I feel like I'm a ball player.
00:20 I played DVU in high school too.
00:22 So just to make it a transition, make it play, it was easy for me.
00:25 >> How's it been working with Coach Guerrero?
00:28 Kind of, what do you like about him?
00:30 What's he kind of challenged you to do?
00:32 >> Well, the thing I like most about Coach Guerrero, he coach us real hard.
00:35 Like, I love that, honestly.
00:37 Like, I don't want a coach to take it easy on me.
00:39 He correct everything.
00:40 He just coach hard.
00:41 And that's what you want.
00:42 You don't want players getting by, because at the end of the day,
00:44 we on the field together.
00:45 And knowing we're getting coached right,
00:47 we know our responsibilities is gonna make us better.
00:49 So I like Coach Guerrero.
00:51 >> What's been maybe one or two things he's really kind of,
00:54 you say he's challenging you guys a lot.
00:55 What's kind of the things that have stood out that he wants you guys to
00:58 keep improving on?
00:59 >> The first thing I say is run to the bar,
01:01 because in football you never know what could happen.
01:03 So run to the bar, you can get a tip, tip bars, pick bars, fumbles.
01:08 And your teammate might just need you.
01:10 You might make a tackle, he might get stood up, just run to the bar,
01:13 go in and help.
01:13 And then our fundamentals in the back end, he done talked to us about that,
01:16 getting our technique better.
01:18 So like breaking out the post, you gotta see, you gotta see vision,
01:21 see where you're going.
01:22 Drive, break, aim, and drive, and go make the play.
01:25 That's what he teach.
01:27 >> What was kind of your biggest takeaway from last year?
01:29 And I know it was a step up from you from junior college last year.
01:32 What was kind of, what did you like about what you did last year?
01:34 And what do you wanna keep improving on?
01:38 >> I like that I brought my mentality here from junior college.
01:41 I can say that's the most different mentality-wise,
01:43 cuz in junior college it's not.
01:46 I wouldn't say, it's not all about yourself,
01:47 cuz we gotta depend on each other to get out and make it out.
01:49 So bringing that mentality here, I feel like we all plan for each other now.
01:53 Like, if that makes sense.
01:55 I wouldn't say that was a problem last year, but it's more meaning behind it.
01:57 Like, we need each other.
01:59 And we can't do it by ourselves.
02:01 It ain't one on 11, it's 11 on 11.
02:03 >> What kind of chemistry does this defensive backfield have?
02:06 I know there's a lot of new guys, a lot of young faces that are coming in and
02:09 determining what's the kind of chemistry amongst you guys.
02:12 >> It's going up.
02:13 It's going up since we've been here.
02:14 We all just got here in the summer, really, so good, complete bond.
02:18 But since we all young, we just been in the trust together.
02:20 We communicate more.
02:21 We're doing extra film sessions, staying at the practice,
02:25 making sure everybody knows their stuff.
02:26 Cuz at the end of the day, we in the back end.
02:28 So if anything get past us, it's touchdown.
02:31 We can't have that, and we're gonna be better this year.
02:33 >> How much have some of those younger guys been looking up to you as a guy that's
02:36 coming back to this program and a guy that's an upperclassman in the room?
02:39 >> I feel like they trust me, cuz last year I was a young guy.
02:42 I was a young guy with them.
02:43 So then we was already close, but on the field,
02:46 that just made me have to lock in my playbook, know everything, know the chicks.
02:49 So now we on the field, they trust me.
02:51 Like whatever I tell them, they trust me.
02:53 So that's what they come out with.
02:54 So me being an older guy, I had to step up, I had no choice.
02:58 But now I'm building my trust in them.
02:59 So then it just challenged each other,
03:01 cuz we all gotta be on the same page at the end of the day.
03:05 >> I think my coach, it's pretty obvious, is he's really high energy.
03:08 As you get into the grinding camp, and these days kinda get tough, and
03:11 you're getting tired of being on the practice field when you get on the game.
03:14 But how is it to have a guy like that every day come out and
03:16 have that same kind of energy all the time?
03:19 >> It's what we need.
03:20 It's what we need, Coach GRDC, and that's what we need.
03:23 Come in the meeting this morning, he always say start, fast, finish strong.
03:26 But he be yelling, and that just wake you up.
03:28 Once you got that energy, it's contagious.
03:31 So then we got players on the team, once you bring that energy,
03:34 it go down to us, and then we just move it along as we go.
03:37 Then we get to the field, we gotta bring it.
03:39 Cuz you gotta bring it, you gotta love it out there.
03:42 If you don't love it, it's gonna be hard to be successful out there.
03:46 >> No communication's big on the back end.
03:47 How are you and Josh, I mean, you didn't play together last year.
03:50 I mean, just how's that coming along, kinda knowing where each other's gonna be,
03:54 and just kinda knowing almost before it happens where you need to be?
03:57 >> And then go back with the communication factor.
04:01 We have to talk every play, and we see it on the film.
04:04 We got hand signals and stuff, so we gotta know.
04:07 It's important.
04:08 Me and Josh, we work together because one of us gotta be in the post.
04:12 We can't let that go.
04:13 We gotta help out.
04:14 The middle field can't be empty, so it's a necessity for us really.
