With just two days left before Chandrayaan-3 attempts a soft landing at the Moon's south pole, the Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO said that the lander module (LM) has established two-way communication with the orbiter of the mission's predecessor Chandrayaan-2. Though the lander of Chandrayaan-2 mission was lost, PRADAN, the orbiter, is currently in a 100 km x 100 km orbit around the Moon.

00:00 With just two days left before Chandrayaan-3 attempts a soft landing at the moon's south
00:05 pole, the Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO said that the Lander module or LM
00:11 has established a two-way communication with the orbiter of the mission's predecessor
00:15 Chandrayaan-2.
00:16 Though the Lander Chandrayaan-2 mission was lost, Pradhan, the orbiter, is currently in
00:21 a 100 km by 100 km orbit around the moon.
00:26 In a post on X, ISRO said that the orbiter sent a welcome message to Chandrayaan-3's
00:30 Lander module, comprising Lander Vikram and Rover Pragyan.
00:34 The space agency's post read, "Welcome buddy, Chandrayaan-2 orbiter firmly welcome
00:39 Chandrayaan-3 LM.
00:40 Two-way communication between the two is established."
00:43 With the stage set for landing, ISRO will now be carrying out internal checks on the
00:47 landing module.
00:48 Powered descent is expected to commence on August 23 at around 5.45 pm and Vikram is
00:55 set to land on the lunar surface at around 6.04 pm.
00:59 Earlier in the day, ISRO released a picture of the far side of the moon, which is the
01:02 lunar hemisphere that always faces away from the Earth.
01:06 All four pictures shared by ISRO were taken on August 19, a day before Vikram entered
01:10 the pre-landing orbit.
01:12 Explaining why the landing has been planned on the day the sun rises on the moon, ISRO
01:16 Chairman S Somnath had said, "We want the landing to happen when the sun rises on the
01:21 moon so we get 14-15 Earth days to work.
01:25 If landing cannot happen on the first two days, we'll wait for another month and land
01:29 in September."
01:30 Vikram is the lander and Pragyan is the robot.
01:32 They are designed to have a life of one lunar day powered by the sun, but a life extension
01:37 is not ruled out completely.
01:39 Upon a successful landing, Pragyan will slide down from Vikram, which will be captured by
01:44 cameras on the lander and begin to move on the lunar surface using its wheels.
01:48 Pragyan is also equipped with cameras for obstacle avoidance.
01:52 A successful soft landing on the moon will make India only the fourth country in the
01:56 world to achieve the feat after the United States, Russia and China.
02:01 India will also become the first country to land on the lunar south pole.
