00:30 Ecuador will head to the polls again in October for a runoff election, after no presidential
00:35 candidate won a clear majority in Sunday`s vote.
00:44 The president of Ukraine with the Danes who`ve pledged to supply his country with 19 F-16
00:49 fast jets. A chance to sit in the cockpit and to savor the result of months of diplomatic
00:55 pressure. The U.S. giving the green light for allies to help Ukraine recover control
01:01 of its skies.
01:02 It won`t be an overnight solution. Ukrainian pilots may not be at the controls until Christmas.
01:07 But with the Dutch also offering 42 of the jets, there`s fresh hope for victory.
01:11 As the counteroffensive continues on the ground, Ukraine`s pilots, engineers and support crews
01:37 are all training to work in and around the F-16s they`ll be receiving. The Dutch and
01:42 Danish governments are also part of the coalition providing the training on NATO`s fixed wing
01:47 fighters.
01:52 Putin is a killer. That was the cry of hundreds of anti-war activists gathered in Helsinki
01:57 on Sunday, calling on Russia to release all political prisoners.
02:01 The demonstrations come three years after the nerve agent attack on now-jailed Kremlin
02:06 critic Alexei Navalny.
02:08 In Berlin, protesters, many of the Russian nationals marched on the Brandenburg Gate
02:13 from the charity hospital where Navalny was treated.
02:17 We made it to show for everybody that you are not alone. Like, everyone who is here
02:21 can see that, hey, you are not alone. We are with you. We are all together. We support
02:26 Navalny. We support opposition. We support the peace all around the world. And we do
02:31 not support Putin, his dictatorship and the war.
02:34 Two thousand kilometers east, Ukrainian soldiers in Bakhmut demonstrated how they move under
02:39 the cover of darkness. It`s all thanks to these red lamps which prevent them from being
02:44 spotted by enemy drones.
02:46 While the Netherlands and Denmark have announced they will send F-16 warplanes to Ukraine,
02:51 Russia`s defense ministry has released footage of what it says are artillery units on a mission
02:56 to destroy Ukrainian military equipment.
03:02 The sound of trumpets in Budapest on Hungary`s national day. Thousands of spectators lined
03:07 the banks of the Danube on Sunday to witness the pomp and pageantry, including an air show
03:12 over the houses of parliament.
03:14 Across the water, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban took the occasion to host 15
03:19 Balkan and Asian leaders at the capital`s Carmelite monastery.
03:24 In a closed-door meeting, Orban and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reportedly
03:28 discussed bilateral cooperation and the war in Ukraine.
03:32 Secrecy aside, the editor-in-chief of Turkish news outlet TurkInfo says Budapest is the
03:37 bridge between Ankara and Europe.
03:39 "It is very important for Turkey to establish relations with the West. Despite the fact
03:46 that Turkey has good relations with Russia, China and other countries in the Middle East,
03:53 it is very important for us to establish relations with the West. We should not forget that we
04:00 have a strong relationship with the West. We should not forget that we have a strong
04:05 relationship with the West."
04:07 Hungary`s Foreign Minister Peter Siarto says Orban`s main focus during Sunday`s talks was
04:12 his country`s energy security. Siarto has reportedly agreed that the flow of gas from
04:17 Serbia to Hungary will have to be increased if Ukraine terminates its gas transit contract
04:22 with Russia.
04:23 The Turkish President and the Asian and Balkan leaders` invitation to the international summit
04:28 indicates that Orban is trying to deepen his economic and political relations with the
04:35 region.

04:43 A bomb from a Russian airstrike lands near the Syrian city of Idlib.
04:48 The air raid targeted a base of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham jihadist group, killing at
04:53 least eight people.
04:54 According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the attacks occurred early Monday
04:59 on the northwestern outskirts of the city of Idlib.
05:02 Hayat Tahrir al-Sham partially controls the province of Idlib, which houses a significant
05:06 portion of armed opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad`s regime.
05:10 With Russia`s military support, the Syrian army has managed to recapture a substantial
05:14 portion of the territory taken by various rebel groups. The Syrian civil war, which
05:18 erupted in 2011, is estimated to have claimed over half a million lives and displaced more
05:23 than 13 million people.
05:27 Former U.S. President Donald Trump is leading the pack of Republicans vying for their party`s
05:32 spot in the United States 2024 presidential race.
05:35 But while they will be heading to Milwaukee on Wednesday for their first primary debate,
05:39 Trump has announced that he`ll be sitting it out.
05:42 The former president, who is facing 91 criminal charges, defended his decision to skip the
05:46 event by arguing that the public already knows who he is.
05:50 Participants in the debate are required to sign a loyalty pledge, stating that they`ll
05:54 support whoever is ultimately elected as the Republican nominee, a pledge that Trump has
05:58 refused to make.
06:03 Authorities in Greece evacuated another five villages near the northeastern border with
06:07 Turkey on Sunday.
06:11 Strong winds whipped up the flames and civil protection authorities warned of an extreme
06:15 fire risk on Monday in the region around the capital Athens and other parts of southern
06:20 Greece.
06:21 In Oratova and Tenerife, the last remnants of fire which broke out on Tuesday were still
06:26 being tackled.
06:30 As weather conditions improved, firefighters were more able to tackle the blaze.
06:34 Police in the Canary Islands have confirmed wildfire raging on the Spanish island of Tenerife
06:40 was started deliberately.
06:43 Three lines of investigation have been opened, but there`s been no confirmation of arrests.
06:49 Heat waves have continued hitting areas of southern Europe, including eastern France,
06:54 with experts suggesting the frequency of unusually late high temperatures are down to global
06:58 warming.
06:59 The temperatures are predicted to persist all week.
07:08 With more than 80 percent of ballots counted, Ecuador`s left-wing candidate, Luisa Gonzalez,
07:13 has come out on top of the first round of her country`s presidential election, winning
07:17 33 percent of the vote, nine points ahead for nearest rival, the right-wing candidate,
07:22 Daniel Noboa.
07:23 But with no candidates curing a majority, the country is set to vote again in a runoff
07:28 on October 15.
07:29 And the winner will have a tough job ahead of them, as they will have to tackle both
07:33 growing violence and an economy struggling to recover from COVID-19.
07:56 Authorities deployed more than 100,000 police and soldiers ahead of Sunday`s vote amid rising
08:01 violence accumulating in the assassination of former candidate and anti-corruption crusader
08:06 Fernando Villavicencio earlier this month.
08:11 The election was called by President Guillermo Lasso to avoid being impeached after allegedly
08:16 failing to end a fraudulent contract.
08:18 His successor will govern for the remainder of his unfinished term.
08:28 Argentina suffered a political earthquake and the response of the markets has been clear.
08:32 Prices have jumped 30 percent in the two days following the victory of the anti-establishment
08:37 populist Javier Mille in last Sunday`s primaries.
08:42 And the peso plunged by 18 percent.
08:45 The question is whether he or anyone can really correct the economy in Argentina is it`s going
08:52 to be tough.
08:53 There are a few bright spots, which I`ll talk about, but these are structural issues.
08:57 For example, public spending represents 40 percent of the country`s GDP.
09:02 That means that if we`re going to address the debt problem, the issue of inflation and
09:08 the tendency of the central bank to print currency, it`s going to have to cut dramatically
09:13 subsidies.
09:14 In a country struggling with annual inflation of over 100 percent, growing poverty and a
09:19 rapidly depreciating currency, the vote has been a response to anger against the political
09:24 class.
09:25 But does it really represent an ideological shift in Argentina?
09:30 I don`t think so much that Mille`s surprise victory in the primaries really represents
09:37 a wholesale shift within the Argentine electorate towards the right and towards this sort of
09:43 view of libertarian, almost calls himself a narco-libertarian, of sort of a much reduced
09:50 state reflects core popular values in Argentina.
09:55 I think Argentina remains very much a center of left country in its orientation.
10:03 The corruption and lack of renewal of the political class has had consequences throughout
10:07 the region.
10:08 We`ve seen them in the United States, Brazil and much of Latin America.
10:13 Faced with their sense of insecurity, people are looking for extreme alternatives.
10:18 There is a sense that there`s been no political renovation, that politicians are unaccountable,
10:24 but also the sense of profound economic insecurity that`s driving this.
10:28 In the surveys done in Latin America by Vanderbilt University, more than 80 percent of respondents
10:34 believe that half or more of their politicians were corrupt.
10:38 When people don`t trust their politicians, when they don`t trust their institutions,
10:41 they look for extreme answers outside the system.
10:48 Back at the hotel, returning as world football champions.
10:50 A 1-0 win was enough for Spain to clinch the FIFA Women`s World Cup against England on
10:55 Sunday, much to the delight of many back home.
11:01 These were the joyous scenes in Coronia moments after the final whistle.
11:05 Outside the Australia Stadium in Sydney, fans were equally ecstatic.
11:10 I`m so happy to go to Spain!
11:14 I was wearing the England jersey, but I had money on Spain, so it was a win-win.
11:19 I just really enjoyed the whole experience.
11:20 But the whole competition was just amazing. It`s such a win.
11:24 Football was a winner.
11:25 It was brilliant.
11:26 Natural heartbreak for England, who suffered their first defeat under manager Serena Wigman`s
11:31 tenure.
11:32 But the tournament`s success has been felt in both Australia and New Zealand.
11:35 It saw TV audience records smashed across the globe, over a million tickets sold for
11:39 matches and the biggest crowd at a Women`s World Cup, at over 75,000.
11:43 (whooshing)
