00:00:00 The program you're about to see is a recreation of the War of the Worlds panic broadcast of
00:00:06 1938. It is based on fact. All interruptions for news bulletins are simulated, and certain
00:00:13 names, characters, and incidents are changed in the interests of dramatization.
00:00:20 In the late years of the 1930s, we were witness to our world gripped in the first agonies
00:00:26 of invasion and war. No section of the earth seemed free from these terrors, or from the
00:00:33 nightmares of what was to come. Nightmares that for the first time were brought vividly
00:00:39 into every home by the force of a new medium. Radio.
00:00:44 This is Alan Field reporting to you by radio remote from Madison, Alabama. For the first
00:01:02 time in the history of the world, we are witnessing the destruction of the nation. We are witnessing,
00:01:23 and America listened to the distant thunder brought by this medium, wanting desperately
00:01:43 to believe that they were secure from the lightning that was to come.
00:01:46 It is October 30th, 1938, 623 Eastern Standard Time. An invasion is being planned by a small
00:01:57 group, and this man is part of it. Not the invasion one might expect, but an unwitting
00:02:04 invasion of the mind that will send a panicked nation fleeing out into the streets. In exactly
00:02:10 one hour and 37 minutes, the nightmare will begin. A fitting night has been picked. It
00:02:17 is Halloween Eve. We're late. The world's late. Yeah. What's with the vignette? Say it
00:02:26 for yourself. What's the show tonight? Our version of War of the Worlds. War. H.G. Wells.
00:02:32 Ain't there enough war on the radio as it is? Now this is a different kind of war. Different.
00:02:35 How different? Either got Germans, Japanese, or Italians. We're different. We got more
00:02:41 citizens. How haunting we will go. Now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. Out of
00:02:57 the back comes a thundering hoof beat of the great horse Silver. All over Europe. All over
00:03:02 Germany. Hitler. No, Hitler. Never seen one before. Well, good news tonight. Washington,
00:03:17 D.C. I wonder how they're gonna get here by now. Nobody's here. Nobody. Aren't you going
00:03:28 to do anything for a little itsy bitsy Charlie on this Halloween? I may tell you a ghost
00:03:34 story. A ghost story. Do you think you're gonna... What is Washington doing about car
00:03:43 prevention? Oh my God, it's crashing. This is the worst catastrophe in the world. The
00:03:50 flames are 500 feet in the sky. It's smoke and flames now. Oh, the humanity. Those passengers.
00:03:56 I can't talk, ladies and gentlemen. There's a mass of smoke. I'm sorry. I can hardly...
00:04:03 I'm going to step inside where I can't see it. Charlie, this is terrible. I'm going to
00:04:10 have to stop for a minute. Isn't it going to crash? It's incredible. He never had an
00:04:15 inkling it was going to crash. You know what he's doing when he goes off the air for 15
00:04:20 seconds? Throwing up. You're not going to do that on the air, are you? Washington wants
00:04:25 to do it. He's not that much. Monsters from Mars are burning up hundreds of people right
00:04:29 in front of his mic. What would you do? It's bursting into flames. This is terrible. This
00:04:38 is one of the worst catastrophes in the world. The flames are 100 feet in the sky. It's smoke
00:04:43 and flames. Oh, the humanity. Those passengers. I can't talk. Hey, Paul. Hello, Nolan. How
00:04:51 are you? Listen, about the... Hey, Paul, I've got to talk to you for a minute. Do we have
00:04:56 to run like this? Every minute counts, Nolan. We're less than two hours to airtime. What's
00:05:00 up? You know darn well what's up. It's these last-minute changes. Now, why do we have to
00:05:04 go through this every week? Now, why should this week be different from every other one?
00:05:08 What do you want me to tell them? Well, in the first place... Excuse us, please. Wait
00:05:12 a second. In the first place, you can't say the Biltmore Hotel. Okay, it's out. Yeah,
00:05:16 and in the second place, no Columbia Broadcasting Building. I suggest just Broadcasting Building.
00:05:20 Broadcasting Building it is. Now, there's one other thing. Now, we have... Oh, yes. For
00:05:24 Pete's sake, Paul. No Roosevelt. No Roosevelt? Why? You ought to be able to figure out why.
00:05:32 Just think for a minute. Don't you guys ever think around here? I mean, no Roosevelt. You
00:05:36 can use some other high government mucky-muck, but no Roosevelt. Now, come on, Paul. It's
00:05:41 not the end of the world. Is that some kind of joke? Oh, no. Why do you get so upset?
00:05:45 Why do you have to get so upset? I'll tell you why I get upset. Because we've got an
00:05:48 actor that does a great Roosevelt. That's why he's going to hit the ceiling. Yeah, well,
00:05:51 I'm sorry, but that's the way it's got to be. Listen, you... Paul. You tell us. Paul, I
00:05:55 need you to listen to something, please. Just a second. Come on in. Anything else? No, nothing
00:06:00 as far as continuity acceptance is concerned. Okay, listen. But there is some concern from
00:06:04 programming. Programming, right. They feel that given the Charlie McCarthy competition...
00:06:12 What do you think? Great. What about the Martian Cylinders? What? The Martian Cylinders.
00:06:16 Oh, don't look. Something more dramatic. I don't want you to be prejudiced. Just turn
00:06:19 around. Norman, you two, come on. Turn around over here. More dramatic than a weather-reported
00:06:22 dance band playing here. Norman, one minute, please. Just listen. What do you think? Sounds
00:06:33 like you're trying to open a pickle jar. What is it? Paul, what do you want from me? I can't
00:06:38 visualize it. It's got to be terrifying. It's got to be huge, ponderous. I mean, it hasn't
00:06:43 opened in a million light years. Hey, what about the prison effects from the counter-monochrystal?
00:06:48 Now, that worked very well. Oh, come on. Not the toilet again. It worked, didn't it? Listen,
00:06:53 two hours. Tony, you can do it. I know you can. Maybe not another sound man in the business,
00:06:57 but you can. Trust me. Use the toilet. Okay, you can use the toilet. Ted!
00:07:08 They didn't buy it, huh? Here, run a wire to the men's room again.
00:07:14 I just got to explain it to him. I know that Orson strives for reality, but he's got to
00:07:21 understand. What is that, Orson? I'll see you later. Relax, Norman. It's only a rehearsal
00:07:31 record. It's all right, I've got a meeting. I'm going to...
00:07:38 Tag it with, "In the 39th year of the 20th century came the great disillusionment." And
00:07:45 then blend it in with the rest of the opening. Now, what's next? Let's see. Oh, Orson wants
00:07:50 to change the landing site of the first machine, so Newark is some other small town. That means
00:07:55 changing the whole location of the combat zone in the first sequence. Legal department,
00:07:59 please. Well, anyway, Newark is spared. Yeah, but I promised it to the Martians. Well, we'll
00:08:04 do Newark in later. Did Norman get a clearance on the Park Plaza Hotel? Okay, where then?
00:08:10 Right there. Wait a minute, I can't see what it says. Will you try to get clearance a little
00:08:15 earlier, please? Grover's Mill? Grover's Mill. I like that. Sounds real. Thanks. You got
00:08:22 it. I have no idea how you did all this in six days. Orson said the world was created
00:08:28 in six days. No reason it shouldn't take any longer than that to destroy it. And you're
00:08:31 sitting on the Princeton Observatory. Right. Sorry. Grover's Mill, huh? I'm curious, Howard.
00:08:39 How come you picked New Jersey in the first place? I got lost out there last weekend.
00:08:43 They gave me the map of the gas station. I had the art department blow it up for me.
00:08:47 What else? Oh, Houseman felt we could do better on the description of the Martian machine.
00:08:53 On page 17, it's the Army's captain. They should be tall. Just before they got him. They
00:08:58 should be tall on metal legs. I wonder how they're going to take all this. I don't know.
00:09:04 Every time I turn on the radio, I can't believe what's happening over there in Europe. However,
00:09:10 back to the real world. The Martian machine seemed to be standing up on legs, rising out
00:09:20 of a cylinder on a sort of metal framework, reaching above the ceiling. At 6.9 Eastern
00:09:33 Standard Time, Walter Wingate was milking his cow just outside Grover's Mill, New Jersey.
00:09:38 Acknowledging their response, there can be no doubt from this demonstration that the
00:09:43 Academy's people, at least here in Longhorn, are only behind the duty. It's just history
00:09:50 that's behind us. Meanwhile, we take you directly to Burbank, where Hector Hitler is about to
00:09:57 have his first... How many times do I have to tell you, that's for the cows, not for
00:10:01 the damn war news. There's going to be a war. Anybody can see that. Oh, anybody can see
00:10:08 that. Well, then how come we ain't in it? We will be any day now. In Canada right now,
00:10:14 Americans are easy. Anybody any day now. All I know is we got a farm to run here, and you
00:10:20 ain't in Canada. Anyhow. No, but I'm going to be. You're giving up your citizenship.
00:10:36 If that's what it takes. That's what it means. What is that supposed to mean? What are you
00:10:42 in such an old-fired hurry to fight about? What do you want to get killed for? It's Hitler
00:10:46 or us, Paul. Can't you ever see that? And he's not making any secret of it. I want my
00:10:50 dinner, and I ain't making no secret of that. Every night we have the same dumb talk. Every
00:10:59 night. You ain't of age yet, and you ain't given up your citizenship till you are. Come
00:11:09 in. 701 Eastern Standard Time. Now! No! No! Try a bigger one! Come on! Come on! Come on!
00:11:37 Try a bigger one! Try the biggest jar you got! More reverb! Put it in lower! Yeah! The
00:12:01 Russians have just landed. Newark, New Jersey. 715 Eastern Standard Time. Mark, Mary, get
00:12:19 up here! I said get up here! I didn't say that, but you did! They'll be up in a minute.
00:12:47 It's not their fault. Sure. They're playing Halloween. They're just kids. 28. 28. You
00:13:12 look 40, don't tell me about kids. Will you at least wait till they're asleep? Everything
00:13:25 for them. Right to the bitter end. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get
00:13:42 you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying
00:14:08 it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said
00:14:37 you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm
00:15:06 going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't
00:15:35 fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get
00:15:58 you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying
00:16:27 it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said
00:16:56 you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm
00:17:23 going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't
00:17:52 fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get
00:18:18 you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying
00:18:47 it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said
00:19:14 you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm
00:19:43 going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't
00:20:11 fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get
00:20:40 you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying
00:21:06 it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said
00:21:35 you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm
00:22:01 going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't
00:22:30 fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get
00:22:56 you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying
00:23:25 it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said
00:23:51 you weren't fancying it, so I'm going to get you. I said you weren't fancying it, so I'm

00:34:47 [music]
00:35:08 We take you now to Grover's Mill, New Jersey.
00:35:11 [crowd noise]
00:35:14 Ladies and gentlemen, this is Carl Phillips again at the Wilmot Farm, Grover's Mill, New
00:35:18 Jersey. Professor Pearson and myself may be 11 miles from Princeton in 10 minutes. Well,
00:35:23 I hardly know where to begin to paint for you a word picture of the strange scene before
00:35:28 my eyes, like something out of a modern Arabian Nights. Well, I just got here. I haven't had
00:35:33 a chance to look around yet. I guess that's it. Yes, I guess that's the thing.
00:35:40 [music]
00:35:47 [music]
00:35:54 [music]
00:36:02 [music]
00:36:12 [music]
00:36:22 While the policemen are pushing the crowd back...
00:36:25 [door slams]
00:36:26 I guess that's about enough of that.
00:36:28 No, leave that. I thought you wanted to hear Charlie McCarthy.
00:36:31 Oh, never mind Charlie McCarthy for once, will you? Go get the table.
00:36:35 Step closer, please.
00:36:36 Stuff is happening right in our own backyard. Ain't you interested?
00:36:39 Closer and louder, please. Louder, please.
00:36:43 Yes, sir. Old Waller was listening to the radio.
00:36:48 Oh, really?
00:36:49 And I heard Wilson, that professor fellow, was talking about Mars. So I was half dozing...
00:36:54 Yes, Mr. Wilmoth. And then what happened?
00:36:56 Isn't there no one named Wilmoth?
00:36:58 Listening to the radio...
00:37:00 That means Wilson. Can't figure how he missed that.
00:37:03 First off, I heard something.
00:37:05 And what did you hear?
00:37:06 A hissing sound.
00:37:08 Like this.
00:37:09 I didn't see it, neither.
00:37:10 Oh, sure you did.
00:37:11 Kind of like a Fourth of July rocket.
00:37:13 Then what?
00:37:14 Oh, I turned my head out the window and would have swore I was to sleep and dreaming.
00:37:18 I seen a kind of greenish streak and then...
00:37:21 Oh, a zingo. Something smacked the ground. Knocked me clear out of my chair.
00:37:25 Were you frightened, Mr. Wilmoth?
00:37:27 Oh, I'm quite sure. I reckon I was kind of riled.
00:37:31 Thank you, Mr. Wilmoth. Thank you.
00:37:33 Oh, you want me to tell you something?
00:37:34 No, that's fine. All right. That's a pleasure.
00:37:36 Ladies and gentlemen, we just heard Mr. Wilmoth honor the fire where this thing has fallen.
00:37:40 I wish I could convey the atmosphere about the background of this fantastic scene.
00:37:45 Hundreds of cars are parked in a field in back of us.
00:37:48 Police are trying to rope off the roadway leading into the farm, but it's no use.
00:37:51 They're breaking right through.
00:37:53 Their headlights throw an enormous spot on the pit where the object's half buried.
00:37:56 Some of the more daring souls are venturing near the edge.
00:37:59 Their silhouettes stand out against the metal sheen.
00:38:02 One man wants to touch the thing. He's having an argument with a policeman.
00:38:06 I like you.
00:38:13 Yeah, I do that.
00:38:15 I mean, I'll let you know where I am.
00:38:17 Ladies and gentlemen, there's something I haven't mentioned in all this excitement, but it's becoming more distinct.
00:38:22 Perhaps you've caught it already on your radio. Listen.
00:38:25 Do you hear it? It's a curious humming sound that seems to come from inside the object.
00:38:36 I'll move the microphone nearer. Here.
00:38:41 There's nothing to be frightened about. They just fill those things up, you know.
00:38:44 Can you hear it now? Oh, Professor Pearson?
00:38:46 Yes, Mr. Phillips.
00:38:47 Can you tell us the meaning of that scraping noise inside the thing?
00:38:50 It's possibly the unequal cooling of its surface.
00:38:53 Still think it's a meteor, Professor?
00:38:55 I don't know what to think. The metal casing is definitely...
00:38:59 It is just a radio show, so when are you going to tell them?
00:39:03 Well, I'll tell them as soon as they ask me.
00:39:07 Oh, and as you can see, a saline...
00:39:10 Just a minute! Something's happening.
00:39:12 Ladies and gentlemen, this is terrific!
00:39:14 This end of the thing is beginning to flake off.
00:39:17 The top is beginning to rotate like a screw.
00:39:20 The thing must be hollow.
00:39:23 SCRAPING NOISE
00:39:27 SCRAPING NOISE
00:39:53 Oh, get back here!
00:39:56 SCRAPING NOISE
00:39:59 SCREAMING
00:40:16 Ladies and gentlemen, this is the most terrifying thing I've ever witnessed.
00:40:22 Oh, my God!
00:40:24 Something's falling out of the hollow top.
00:40:27 Something's peering out of that black hole.
00:40:30 Two luminous disks.
00:40:32 I mean, I'm seeing... It might be a face.
00:40:34 It might be...
00:40:36 Good heavens!
00:40:38 Something's wriggling out of the shadow like a grey snake.
00:40:42 Now, it's another one.
00:40:44 And another. They look like tentacles to me.
00:40:47 There, I can see the thing's body.
00:40:49 Oh, it's large as a bear, and it glistens like wet leather.
00:40:54 But that face...
00:40:56 It's indescribable.
00:40:59 I can hardly force myself to keep looking at it.
00:41:03 The eyes are black and gleam like a serpent.
00:41:06 The mouth is V-shaped with saliva dripping out.
00:41:09 And the sound of it, the theme of quivering pulsates.
00:41:13 The monster, or whatever it is, can hardly move.
00:41:15 It seems weighed down by, possibly, gravity or something.
00:41:19 The thing's raising up.
00:41:21 The crowd falls back. They've seen enough.
00:41:23 This is the most extraordinary experience.
00:41:26 I can't find words.
00:41:28 I'm pulling this microphone with me as I talk.
00:41:31 I'll have to stop the description until I've taken a new position.
00:41:34 Hold on, will you, please? I'll be back in a minute.
00:41:38 [piano playing]
00:41:41 My God, Hank.
00:41:49 What is it? What's happening?
00:41:51 Nothing to see. Just take it easy now.
00:41:53 Oh, it's just probably one of those things from a medieval...
00:41:58 But didn't you hear what he said?
00:42:00 I heard what he said.
00:42:01 Well, what's happened?
00:42:02 [piano playing]
00:42:05 We are bringing you an eyewitness account of what's happening
00:42:08 on the Wilmoth Farm, Grovers Mill, New Jersey.
00:42:11 [piano playing]
00:42:14 [phone ringing]
00:42:20 Let's see what else.
00:42:22 Don't touch that dial!
00:42:23 Maybe they know more about it on another station.
00:42:26 They're saying nudie.
00:42:28 [phone ringing]
00:42:30 Six-nine.
00:42:32 [phone ringing]
00:42:34 I'm not going to finish this story.
00:42:36 Well, why not?
00:42:37 Well, I'm not going to make a fool of myself.
00:42:39 Turn it back! They don't even know it's happening!
00:42:42 Wait a minute, will you?
00:42:43 Walter, come on.
00:42:45 Well, it certainly took you long enough to realize.
00:42:48 [inaudible]
00:42:50 Ladies and gentlemen, we now return you to Carl Phillips at Grovers Mill.
00:42:55 [applause]
00:42:57 Ladies and gentlemen...
00:42:59 Am I on?
00:43:00 Ladies and gentlemen, here I am, back to the stone wall
00:43:03 that adjoins Mr. Wilmoth's garden.
00:43:05 From here, I get a sweep of the whole scene.
00:43:07 I'll give you every detail as long as I can talk,
00:43:09 as long as I can see.
00:43:11 More state police have arrived.
00:43:13 They're drawing up a cordon in front of the pit,
00:43:15 about 30 of them.
00:43:16 No need to push the crowd back now.
00:43:18 They're willing to keep their distance.
00:43:19 The captain is conferring with someone.
00:43:21 We can't quite see who.
00:43:23 Oh, yes, I believe it's Professor Pearson.
00:43:25 Yes, it is.
00:43:26 Now they've parted.
00:43:27 The professor moves around one side,
00:43:29 studying the object,
00:43:30 while the captain and two policemen advance with something in their hands.
00:43:33 I can see it now.
00:43:34 It's a white handkerchief tied to a pole.
00:43:37 A flying--
00:43:38 Those creatures know what that means,
00:43:40 what anything means.
00:43:42 Wait!
00:43:43 Something's happening.
00:43:45 A hump shape is rising--
00:43:47 Shut that thing off!
00:43:48 What do you think, Joey?
00:43:49 --against a mirror.
00:43:50 What's that?
00:43:51 There's a jet of flame swinging from that mirror.
00:43:55 And it leaps right at the advancing men.
00:43:58 It strikes them head on.
00:44:00 All right, buddy.
00:44:05 What's going on in there?
00:44:07 Huh?
00:44:08 Don't you know what's happening?
00:44:15 Come on, come on.
00:44:16 You'll have to move the car.
00:44:17 There's no parking along.
00:44:18 Listen, listen.
00:44:26 The whole field's caught fire!
00:44:28 That's just regular probing.
00:44:30 The woods, the barns, the airspace, the animal means,
00:44:35 it's spreading everywhere.
00:44:37 It's coming this way, about 20 yards to my right.
00:44:55 Let's go.
00:44:56 Ladies and gentlemen, due to circumstances beyond our control,
00:45:02 we are unable to continue the broadcast from Grover's Mill.
00:45:05 [radio chatter]
00:45:08 In the meantime, we have a late bulletin from San Diego, California.
00:45:14 Professor Indell Coffer, speaking at a dinner at the California House of Government Society,
00:45:19 expressed the opinion that this is a serious problem,
00:45:22 and that the California government will not be willing to cooperate
00:45:25 in an air-volcanic disturbance from the surface of the planet.
00:45:28 We continue now with our piano interlude.
00:45:31 Columbia Broadcasting System.
00:45:46 What?
00:45:47 Well, not that I know of.
00:45:49 I believe it's only a play.
00:45:52 That's right, it's just a play.
00:45:54 That's what's on our program schedule.
00:45:57 You're welcome.
00:45:58 Ladies and gentlemen, I've just been handed a message
00:46:07 that came in from Grover's Mill by telephone.
00:46:09 At least 40 people, including six state troopers,
00:46:12 lie dead in a field east of the village of Grover's Mill,
00:46:15 their bodies burned and distorted beyond all possible recognition.
00:46:18 The next voice you hear will be that of Brigadier General Montgomery Smith,
00:46:22 commander of the state militia at Trenton, New Jersey.
00:46:25 Over here.
00:46:28 Now.
00:46:29 Over here.
00:46:30 Yeah.
00:46:31 I have been requested by the governor of New Jersey
00:46:34 to place the counties of Mercer and Middlesex as far west as Princeton
00:46:38 and east to Jamesburg under martial law.
00:46:41 No one will be permitted to enter this area
00:46:44 except by special pass issued by state or military authorities.
00:46:48 [siren]
00:46:50 Head for cover. It's on the radio. Quick!
00:47:00 [siren]
00:47:04 Mommy.
00:47:10 I had a bad nightmare.
00:47:13 I want to sleep in your room.
00:47:16 Oh, it's all right.
00:47:18 It's all right.
00:47:20 [siren]
00:47:22 I have to stay here.
00:47:23 No.
00:47:25 The strange creatures, after unleashing their deadly assault,
00:47:28 crawled back in their pit and made no attempt to prevent the efforts
00:47:31 of firemen to recover the bodies and extinguish the fire.
00:47:34 Let's get out of here!
00:47:36 [shouting]
00:47:42 Ladies and gentlemen, I've just been informed that we have finally
00:47:45 established communication with an eyewitness of the tragedy.
00:47:48 Professor Pearson has been located at a farmhouse near Grover's Mill
00:47:51 where he's established an emergency observation post.
00:47:54 As a scientist, he will give you his explanation of this calamity.
00:47:58 The next voice you hear will be of Professor Pearson,
00:48:01 brought to you by direct wire.
00:48:03 Professor Pearson.
00:48:05 Of the creatures in the rocket cylinder at Grover's Mill,
00:48:08 I can give you no authoritative information,
00:48:10 as to their nature, their origin, or their purposes here on Earth.
00:48:14 Of their destructive instrument,
00:48:16 I might venture some conjectural explanation.
00:48:19 [static]
00:48:21 [indistinct chatter]
00:48:23 [static]
00:48:25 It's all too evident that these creatures have scientific knowledge
00:48:28 far in advance of our own.
00:48:30 [static]
00:48:32 They are able to generate an intense heat in a chamber
00:48:35 of practically absolute non-conductivity.
00:48:38 This intense heat they project in a parallel beam
00:48:41 against any object they choose
00:48:43 by means of a polished parabolic mirror of unknown composition,
00:48:47 much as a-- [beeping]
00:48:48 the mirror of a lighthouse projects a beam of light.
00:48:51 And that is my conjecture of the origin of the heat ray.
00:48:55 Thank you, Professor Pearson.
00:48:57 [static]
00:49:00 Ladies and gentlemen, here is a bulletin from Trenton.
00:49:02 It is a brief statement informing us that the charred body of Carl Phillips
00:49:06 has been identified in a Trenton hospital.
00:49:08 We have received a request from the militia at Trenton
00:49:12 to place at their disposal our entire broadcasting facilities.
00:49:17 In view of the gravity of the situation
00:49:20 and believing that radio has a definite responsibility
00:49:23 to serve in the public interest at all times,
00:49:26 we are turning over our facilities to the state militia at Trenton.
00:49:30 Well, it's about time they got the military involved.
00:49:34 [chatter]
00:49:37 Mr. Matlock.
00:49:38 Shh.
00:49:40 We take you now to the field headquarters of the state militia
00:49:43 near Grovers Mill, New Jersey.
00:49:45 [chatter]
00:49:48 This is Captain Lance Ely, signal core test.
00:50:01 The state militia now engaged in military operations
00:50:04 in the vicinity of Grovers Mill.
00:50:07 Situation arising from the reported presence of certain individuals
00:50:10 of unidentified nature is now under complete control.
00:50:14 The cylindrical object, which lies in a pit directly below our position,
00:50:19 is surrounded now on all sides by eight battalion--
00:50:22 Daddy, what's the matter?
00:50:24 You go to sleep.
00:50:25 Why is Mommy crying?
00:50:27 Well, Mommy has a headache. That's why she's crying.
00:50:29 I can't go to sleep. I'm afraid my bad dream will come back.
00:50:33 Oh, no, you know why?
00:50:35 You come in the other room with Daddy, you sleep on the couch.
00:50:38 I can see they're hiding.
00:50:40 With all their reported resources, these creatures can scare us.
00:50:45 Everything's going to be all right.
00:50:47 Everywhere it's an interesting outing for the troops.
00:50:50 [chatter]
00:50:53 We've got a check pit of warplanes crossing back and forth now in front of the lights.
00:50:56 It looks almost like real war.
00:50:59 What?
00:51:00 Oh, yeah, there appears to be some slight smoke in the woods bordering the mills now.
00:51:05 How are we going to fight these things just with our shotguns?
00:51:08 You just keep your eyes peeled, boy.
00:51:10 Don't you worry about that heat ray.
00:51:13 First, let's just find them, and we'll give them something to worry about.
00:51:19 Aren't you looking for a fight?
00:51:22 Mr. Matlock, sir, please.
00:51:25 Harrison, don't get involved in things you don't understand.
00:51:28 [chatter]
00:51:38 Say, have you been listening?
00:51:40 [chatter]
00:51:45 What are you going to do?
00:51:46 I don't know what to do.
00:51:48 You know the piercers down the hall?
00:51:50 They're putting everybody in the car.
00:51:52 They figure they'll be safer across the river in New York.
00:51:55 You're going to New York?
00:51:56 We're leaving here now.
00:51:57 What do you mean, we're leaving here now?
00:51:58 Me too.
00:51:59 We're leaving here now.
00:52:00 I'm going to pack up the kids.
00:52:01 Honey, you don't feel good right now.
00:52:02 You better lie down.
00:52:03 You don't feel--
00:52:04 [chatter]
00:52:05 What is it?
00:52:06 You know Pete the handyman?
00:52:08 He says it's the Germans.
00:52:11 It's the Germans?
00:52:12 Wait a minute.
00:52:13 I see something on the top of the cylinder.
00:52:15 No, nothing but a shell.
00:52:17 Well, troops are on the edge of the Wilmers Farm.
00:52:20 We have 7,000 armed men closing in on an old metal tower.
00:52:26 Wait a minute.
00:52:29 That wasn't a shadow.
00:52:31 Something moving.
00:52:33 Solid metal.
00:52:34 Kind of a shield-like affair rising up out of the cylinder.
00:52:38 Going higher and higher.
00:52:40 Standing on legs, actually rearing up on a sort of metal framework.
00:52:44 Now it's reaching above the trees.
00:52:47 [shouting]
00:52:50 Ladies and gentlemen, I have a grave announcement to make.
00:52:59 Incredible as it may seem, both the observations of science and the evidence of our eyes
00:53:03 lead to the inescapable assumption that those strange beings who landed in the Jersey farmlands tonight
00:53:08 are the vanguard of an invading army from the planet Mars.
00:53:11 The battle which took place tonight at Grover's Mill
00:53:14 descended in one of the most startling defeats ever suffered by an army in modern times.
00:53:19 7,000 men armed with rifles and machine guns
00:53:22 pitted against a single fighting machine of the invader from Mars.
00:53:25 120 known survivors.
00:53:27 The rest strewn over the battle area from Grover's Mill to Plainsboro,
00:53:31 crushed and cradled to death under the metal feet of the monster
00:53:34 or burned to cinders by its heat ray.
00:53:36 The monster is now in control of the middle section of New Jersey
00:53:39 and has effectively cut the state through its center.
00:53:42 Communication lines are down from Pennsylvania to the Atlantic coast.
00:53:45 Call Chief Lawrence at the police station.
00:53:47 Yes, sir.
00:53:48 ...and service from New York and Philadelphia
00:53:49 discontinued except routing some of the trains through Allentown and Phoenixville.
00:53:53 Highways to the north, south, and west are clogged with frantic human traffic.
00:53:56 Police and army reserves are unable to control the mad flight.
00:54:00 By morning, the fugitives will have swelled Philadelphia, Camden, and Trenton,
00:54:03 it is estimated, to twice their normal population.
00:54:06 At this time, martial law prevails throughout New Jersey and...
00:54:09 Hey, Orville, it is a radio program, ain't it?
00:54:12 It ain't no radio show. Now shut up, will you?
00:54:15 The Secretary of the Interior.
00:54:17 Citizens of the nation,
00:54:20 I shall not try to conceal the gravity of the situation that confronts the country,
00:54:30 nor the concern of your government...
00:54:34 It's Roosevelt.
00:54:36 What's that idiot doing now?
00:54:38 ...of its people.
00:54:40 However, I wish to impress upon you,
00:54:44 private citizens and public officials...
00:54:47 There is no answer, sir.
00:54:48 ...all of you, to urge and plead a calm and resourceful attitude.
00:54:56 Fortunately, this formidable enemy is still confined to a comparatively small area,
00:55:06 and we may place our faith in the military forces to keep them there.
00:55:14 In the meantime, placing our faith in God,
00:55:19 we must continue the performance of our duties, each and every one of us,
00:55:26 so that we may confront this destructive adversary
00:55:32 with a nation united, courageous,
00:55:36 and consecrated to the preservation of human supremacy on this earth.
00:55:43 I thank you.
00:55:45 You have just heard the Secretary of the Interior speaking from Washington.
00:55:52 Bulletins too numerous to read are piling up in the newsroom here.
00:55:56 We are informed that the central portion of New Jersey is blacked out from radio communication
00:56:00 due to the effect of the heat ray upon power lines and electrical equipment.
00:56:07 Here is a special bulletin from New York.
00:56:09 It was received from the English, French, and German scientific bodies offering assistance.
00:56:16 Astronomers report continued gas outbursts at regular intervals on the planet Mars.
00:56:23 Majority vote opinion...
00:56:26 Their apparent objective is to crush the resistance in their bodies.
00:56:30 [siren]
00:56:34 Hey, boy, where you stoppin' me for? We gotta get outta here.
00:56:37 I just wanna find out where the fire's after us, Owen.
00:56:40 Fire? Are you serious?
00:56:41 Yeah, you see, we're going about 80 miles.
00:56:43 Are you crazy? Don't you know what's happening? Ain't you hurt?
00:56:46 Just listen.
00:56:47 ...on the Earth to blow up second invading unit before a cylinder can be opened
00:56:51 and the Martian fighting machinery.
00:56:53 Martians, yeah, sure.
00:56:54 They've landed on Earth. New Jersey's under Martial Law.
00:56:57 I'm serious.
00:56:58 Just listen, just listen, listen.
00:56:59 ...foothills of the Wachung Mountains.
00:57:01 Another bulletin from Langham Field, Virginia.
00:57:04 Scouting planes report enemy machines...
00:57:06 Now will you let me go? I gotta get back to the farm.
00:57:09 You ain't getting outta here.
00:57:10 ...over houses and trees and their...
00:57:11 I gotta get outta here. We gotta save this man.
00:57:13 [grunting]
00:57:15 Hold it.
00:57:17 [radio chatter]
00:57:19 ...10 miles of plain fields.
00:57:21 Here is a bulletin from Winston...
00:57:23 That's a radio play, old buddy.
00:57:25 ...carrying heavy explosives by storm to pursue the enemy.
00:57:28 ...active skies.
00:57:30 They keep feeding enemy...
00:57:31 Now turn around.
00:57:33 Attaboy.
00:57:35 Oh, they'd all have known it was a radio play.
00:57:38 ...archivery line in adjacent villages to give you direct reports
00:57:41 in the zone of the advancing enemy.
00:57:43 First, we take you to the battery of the 22nd Field Artillery
00:57:46 located in the Wachung Mountains.
00:57:48 [radio chatter]
00:57:51 [siren]
00:57:53 Range, 32 meters.
00:57:55 32 meters.
00:57:56 Projection, 39 degrees.
00:57:58 39 degrees.
00:57:59 Fire.
00:58:00 Fire.
00:58:01 [gunshot]
00:58:02 [explosion]
00:58:04 140 yards to the right, sir.
00:58:06 Shift range, 31 meters.
00:58:09 31 meters.
00:58:10 Projection, 37 degrees.
00:58:12 37.
00:58:13 Fire.
00:58:14 Fire.
00:58:15 [gunshot]
00:58:16 [gunfire]
00:58:19 I hit Sarah.
00:58:20 We got a tripod in front of them.
00:58:22 They've stopped.
00:58:23 Come on.
00:58:24 Get us a train of repair.
00:58:25 Go inside and get your gun out.
00:58:26 No, honey, you can't take doors, I'm afraid.
00:58:28 Projection, 27 degrees.
00:58:30 Hey, honey.
00:58:31 You're not a baby.
00:58:33 [gunshot]
00:58:34 You gotta be kidding.
00:58:36 They're letting off a smoke.
00:58:38 Well, how could they?
00:58:39 A black smoke, sir, moving this way.
00:58:41 Well, what do you want me to do?
00:58:43 It's moving fast.
00:58:45 Oh, okay.
00:58:46 All right, I'll see what I can do.
00:58:48 Paul, we got trouble.
00:58:50 Listen, people are taking this thing seriously.
00:58:52 That's ridiculous.
00:58:53 Well, we gotta do something about it.
00:58:55 Well, we'll give them a disclaimer.
00:58:56 Well, where?
00:58:58 Well, where else?
00:58:59 At the station break.
00:59:00 23 meters.
00:59:02 23 meters.
00:59:05 Projection, 22 degrees.
00:59:07 22 degrees.
00:59:08 22.
00:59:09 [coughing]
00:59:11 [chatter]
00:59:16 Harrison, don't just stand there.
00:59:18 Call someone.
00:59:19 [chatter]
00:59:30 Mr. Matlock.
00:59:31 Mr. Matlock, perhaps we're reacting precipitously.
00:59:33 What are you talking about?
00:59:34 Perhaps we should try to understand them.
00:59:36 Understand who?
00:59:38 The Martians.
00:59:39 They may have been forced into this--
00:59:40 Your life.
00:59:41 --lifestyle living space.
00:59:42 Your man.
00:59:43 Perhaps they could even try to help us.
00:59:45 [chatter]
00:59:46 Pull us up by our bootstraps, so to speak.
00:59:48 [chatter]
00:59:52 Projection, 22--
00:59:53 Maybe they could even help us to get the trains to run on time.
00:59:57 [chatter]
01:00:02 [screaming]
01:00:04 Army bombing plane V843 off Bayon, New Jersey.
01:00:10 Lieutenant Boyd, commanding eight bombers.
01:00:12 Reporting command of Fairfax Langham Field.
01:00:14 Let's see what's going on, Pa.
01:00:16 Go ahead.
01:00:18 This is Boyd, reporting command of Fairfax Langham Field.
01:00:22 Enemy tripod machines are now in sight.
01:00:25 Reinforced by three machines from the Morristown cylinder.
01:00:28 There are six now altogether.
01:00:30 One machine partially crippled.
01:00:32 Believe hit by a shell from army gun.
01:00:36 Where, damn it?
01:00:38 Where?
01:00:39 Guns now appear silent.
01:00:41 A heavy black fog is hanging close to the earth now.
01:00:45 Extreme density, nature unknown.
01:00:48 No sign of heat ray.
01:00:50 Enemy now turns east, crossing the Zag River into Jersey Marshes.
01:00:56 Another straddles the Pulaski Skyway.
01:00:59 They're on the skyway.
01:01:01 They're pushing down a high-tension power station now.
01:01:04 Machines are close together.
01:01:06 We are ready to attack.
01:01:08 Planes circling, ready to strike.
01:01:14 A thousand yards and we'll be over the first.
01:01:20 Eight hundred yards.
01:01:24 Linda.
01:01:25 Linda!
01:01:27 Hey!
01:01:33 Four hundred.
01:01:44 Two hundred.
01:01:50 Hey, baby.
01:01:51 The king can come.
01:01:53 Linda!
01:01:55 Daddy?

01:02:18 What?
01:02:19 We're getting married right now.
01:02:20 No, stop it.
01:02:21 No, I love you.
01:02:22 We're getting married.
01:02:23 Under the resurrection, there shall be no marriage or giving of hands unto Mary.
01:02:28 You will be like the angels of heaven.
01:02:30 Please.
01:02:31 Stephen.
01:02:32 We wrestle not against flesh and blood.
