00:02 When I was a little girl,
00:05 I came to this coast with my mum, my nan and my aunties.
00:10 We had come to gather a much loved delicacy,
00:13 a giant surf clam only found in New Zealand called toheroa.
00:18 For hundreds of years,
00:20 my family and other West Coast Maori across Aotearoa
00:24 have gathered toheroa as a staple food source.
00:29 In the 1930s, the toheroa became popular in New Zealand,
00:33 gaining recognition in parts of the world.
00:37 In one weekend in 1966 alone,
00:40 it is recorded that 12,000 cars
00:43 and 50,000 people visited Ripiroa Beach
00:47 and harvested about 1 million toheroa.
00:50 That's the law.
00:52 That's the law.
00:54 You know, I'll take you.
00:58 Yeah, well, the legends,
01:00 the stories are legends.
01:02 Toheroa means to persist longer.
01:06 Toheroa, to dig deeper.
01:10 You know, there were these thieves from up the north.
01:13 You know, where you come from, the north?
01:16 Well, if you're from the north, you fill a thieve.
01:18 You come down our flat,
01:19 you came down to our beach at Ripiroa
01:22 'cause they were hunting for food.
01:24 They heard this wind going,
01:26 "Hoo, hoo, toheroa."
01:30 Toheroa means to persist longer.
